The Haida indigenous people’s stewardship is at the heart, they were raised under the principle of Yahguudabg, which translates ‘respect for all living things.’ They were located in the archipelago of Haida Gwaii in the northern British Columbia, in Canada. They believe the health of the land, animals and people are connected, living in balance. Respect is an important concept in Haida understanding, it not only involves enacting the required behaviour when entering the water but thanking the eagle and leaving half of the salmon. For the most part gratitude and sharing are still important as countless generations accepts the responsibility to ensure that the heritage is passed on to the following generations.
