The Pain Begins UDP freezes public officers’ allowances
According to the memo, the purpose of the freeze which will take place in September 2012 is to “review all allowances” which will only be reactivated if deemed justifiable. It sounds like a needed exercise, but the Public Service falters immensely and it shows how it can be used politically because while public officers will be targeted, specially-hired and wellpaid contract officers will be untouched. Belize City, July 18, 2012 The Barrow Administration has started their attack on public officers. Faced with a budget that contains a $120 million shortfall, the UDP Government is scratching at anything to see if it can bleed money. Cuts in education, health and national security have been confirmed. Gas prices will remain high and an increase in the tax for the tourism sector will be implemented. And now the latest target is the public service. A memo issued by the Ministry of Public Service introduces a TEMPORARY FREEZE OF ALLOWANCES for ALL Public Officers.
