Team Belize finished 5th at III Central American U-23 female volleyball championships Guatemala City, August 13, 2016 Team Belize bounced back after 3 back to back losses to win 2 games and finish in 5th place at the 3rd Central American Under-23 Female Volleyball Championships held at the “7 de Diciembre” Alfonso Gordillo Gymnasium in Guatemala City, August 6-13. Costa Rica three-peat as champions by a 3-1 win over Guatemala in the finals on Friday night; while El Salvador clinched the bronze by a 3-2 win over Belize. Team Belize won 3-2 against Nicaragua in their 4th game last Tuesday: 25-20, 14-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-9. Jahshema Saunders scored 18pts including 10 spikes, 5 blocks and serving 3 aces, also scooping up 14 digs and 9 good receptions. Sherika Burton and Maurissa Williams hit 12 spikes apiece, Shynelle Glenn served 2 aces to score 7pts, and Clara Sabal and Kevanna Sebastian scored 6pts apiece. Team Belize also won 3-2 against winless Panama on Thursday: 25-20, 21-25, 25-8, 28-30, 15-11. Maurissa Williams scored 17pts, including 13 spikes, 2 blocks and 2 aces. Sherika Burton

added 12pts, including 10 spikes and 2 blocks. Shynelle Glenn scored 11pts, including 8 spikes, and 3 blocks. Clara Sabal added 7pts. Sherika Burton shattered the 2014 record set by Maurissa Williams of 27pts - highest individual score in one game; when Sherika scored 39 pts, including 33 spikes and 6 blocks against El Salvador on Friday. El Salvador won 21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 15-10. Shynelle Glenn scored 12pts, and Jahshema Saunders hit 6 spikes and served 2 aces for another 8pts.

Belize girls block Panama

Belize lost 2-3 to Costa Rica last Monday, 0-3 to Guatemala on Sunday, August 7 and 2-3 to Honduras on Saturday, August 6. Those 2-3 losses show the Belize girls were in contention up to the 5th set; and only their errors cost them the game; otherwise they might have won the silver medal.
