Benefits of Humidifiers during Winter Humidity affects us in our homes every day. A low humidity level causes dry air, a common occurrence during the colder winter season. It influences our overall comfort level and impacts our general physical health. Humidity control is an important aspect of homeownership. Effects of Low Humidity When indoor air becomes too dry due to low humidity, it can cause many issues for homeowners. Dry air causes skin, eye, and nose irritation—it often leads to itchy and chapped skin, dry eyes, and colds accompanied by sore throats—and leads to poor overall air quality. Increasing humidity is the solution. Your HVAC system must ensure a consistent level of moisture in the air throughout your home. The Importance of Humidity Control in Your Home The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defers to The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for its recommendation of an ideal relative humidity for human comfort and health—it should be at or below 65%. When your indoor humidity level falls outside of that, you run a greater risk of being negatively impacted by the resultant dry air. Having an HVAC system that helps maintain appropriate humidity levels in your home is key. Adding a Humidifier to Your HVAC System There are often signs that you need to address low humidity levels in your home. One sign is if you or any family members suffer from persistent colds and/or worsened allergies, especially during dryer months. A related sign that often goes unnoticed is poor sleep patterns due to irritated nasal passages caused by low humidity. Other signs of low humidity are effects to your home itself, including warped wooden surfaces and peeling paint and wallpaper. Adding a whole-home humidifier to your HVAC system is an effective solution for addressing your humidity concerns.
