The bearskin hats are about* 45 cm tall and weigh* between 2 and 4 kilos.

The hats are made from real skin of Canadian brown bears, although* the authorities are trying* to find a syn thetic alternative. The bearskins were firs t worn* in 1815 after* British soldiers defeated* Napoleon’s French Imperia l Guard at the Battle of Waterloo.

You can take a photo of a Queen’s guard outside Buckingham Palace. These soldiers protect the Queen at all her residences. They are not allowed* to talk or laugh* with tourists.

The guards protecting Horse Guards, the official entrance to both St James’ Palace and Buckingham Palace, are on* horseback from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These soldiers work in* turns of one hour.

Big Ben is the name of the enormous bell* inside the clock tower. The clock tower is now called Elizabeth Tower, after* Queen Elizabeth II, and forms part of the Houses of Parliament. It is 96 metres tall.

Horse-riding: sport, animals and fresh air “Riding makes me feel* really happy and free*…”

“I started horse-riding properly* last year. I used* to horse-ride when I was smaller but I fell* off and got* scared.

But now I love it! I go to a riding club in Arucas, a lovely* little village* in the north of Gran Canaria, which is where I live. I go on Sundays and sometimes* during the week if I can.

My family think it’s a great idea, although* Mum worried* a* bit at* first in* case I fell* off the horse and hurt* myself.”

Moving* on “I love riding – it’s perfect for me because I love animals and I enjoy* being in the open* air.

And I’m gradually getting* better because I’ve had some classes and my technique has* improved.

The most difficult thing for me is jumping – that’s really hard*. I like doing the rising* trot best – it’s very elegant.”

Looking to the future “My dream is to compete one day but I still* need to learn a lot more. But riding makes me feel* really happy and free*, although* sometimes I feel* a* bit insecure and scared* of falling* off. In general tho’*, it helps* me to concentrate better and gives me confidence in myself and in my horse. And although* we ride different horses at the club, I have my own* personal favourite.

The garden* dormouse’s long sleep This agile rodent* stuffs* itself for six months a year.

What does it do the rest of the time? It sleeps*… like a log!

W

hen they woke up last spring*, Mr and Mrs garden* dormouse quickly had babies. They had three, which is normal for a garden* dormouse family.

A month later, the young dormice* were ready* to follow* their parents from tree to tree. What* for? To find* fruit to eat, of* course!

The garden* dormouse is an excellent climber*; you don’t often see it walking on the ground*. It can climb up high* walls with* no trouble. Thanks to this superpower, it can get* into attics where people sometimes keep* apples. The garden* dormouse family are going to have a feast*. These little rogues* will* try as* many as ten pieces of fruit before* they choose* the best one!

The temperature has been 13ºC for a* few days now. This is a sign for the dormouse – it will* have to go to sleep for six months, and even* seven months if the temperature stays* below* 15ºC. The garden* dormouse sleeps so* deeply that nobody* can wake it up during that period.

Théo, king of the cliff* Théo is the youngest person to climb an 8C route – really difficult!

He tells us about his love of rock* climbing…

A passion on* the up and up I started climbing when I was 7.

My parents were always rock* climbing and I got* bored watching them from the ground*. So* I asked them if I could do it too. You start on a climbing* wall. The holds* are bigger than in nature and not too far from each other.

I loved it straightaway*!

Safety* first!

I warm* up at* the bottom of the cliff*. Then I put on my equipment. I carry* a small bag of white powder* on my back* – it’s magnesium. You put it on your hands so* that you don’t* sweat. If your hands are damp*, you can slip*. I go* through the movements in my head. The aim* is to get to the top* without falling.

But I have a harness and ropes*… thank* goodness!

You need the right equipment to climb safely*.

The British bulldog

Despite* its grumpy* look, this dog is a funny affectionate* pet with lots of personality!

We are loyal, brave and determined*.

That is why the bulldog is a symbol of Great Britain. The UK Prime Minister during World* War II, Winston Churchill, was often compared to a bulldog because of his determination in opposing* Nazi Germany.

We have big heads, short squat* bodies and funny faces. We weigh* about 25 kilos.

We are very strong*!

We have short tails* and we can be a variety of colours – brown, white, fawn* and black and white.

We are friendly, affectionate* and independent, but also* lazy* and stubborn*. We are excellent family pets and we love children.

In* fact, we really like being with people and we usually get* on well with other family pets.

Bulldogs were originally bred* to fight* bulls* and they were often hurt* or even* killed* at these events. This popular blood* sport was finally banned* in England in 1835.

Today, bulldogs are weaker* and less* ferocious* and aggressive than their ancestors – they have a much nicer temperament.

2. How did the thief steal the gold nuggets without setting the alarm off? The thief caused an electricity cut to steal the gold nuggets without setting off the alarm. They cut a cable from the main generator outside.

3. Who’s the culprit and how did they commit the robbery? The culprit had to go outside to cut the cable. Sheila Schwimmer can’t dive so deep. Yvette Erinaire’s dolphin, Dodo, obviously can’t use tools. Davy Dryver’s saucer was in the workshop. So the robot IMER-G helped with the sabotage. Only two people know how to control it: Sheila Schwimmer and Ivor Komputa. Sheila was diving. So Ivor is the culprit. Ivor took 15 minutes to put the electricity back on using the emergency generator when he was next to it… In fact, he went down to the office. On the way, he saw Yvette and told her to go upstairs. He stole the gold nuggets, went back upstairs to hide them in the bathroom and then he put the electricity back on.
