CIVIC DUTY — The 2008 Presidential Election was the first time university students in Virginia were allowed to vote at local polling, using their campus address as a place of residence.

Although the Liberty University Vines Center is now home to an array of food venues, it seems that the arena will not be home to voters as a polling place during the upcoming November election. VOTE! While students enjoyed their summer break this past June, the Lynchburg registrar officially approved the Liberty Vines Center as a polling place. However, that was only one of many hoops that the proposal must jump through, according to David Corry, who is General Counsel for Liberty University. When precinct lines are moved or changed, the proposal must first be approved by the registrar and then recommended by the Electoral Board to the City Council. The Council will then make a motion to either approve or discard the proposal — a process which usually can be accomplished in a matter of weeks. However, because the particular proposal regarding Liberty was placed within a group of proposals concerning the possible redistricting of our area, the process will not be as quick and easy as it was initially

Michele Bachmann stands alone as the only woman to declare her candidacy as a Republican Party presidential candidate, and she will make her way to Liberty University on Sept. 28. The republican Representative from Minnesota will speak in Wednesday’s convocation, sandwiched between speakers Eric Metaxas and Ed Hindson. Bachmann is one of four women scheduled to speak in convocation this BACHMANN semester. Bachmann will be the second GOP presidential candidate to speak in convocation. The first was Texas Gov. Rick Perry. “It is…a compliment to Liberty, and to our student body, that leader after leader covets the opportunity to address our student body,” Teaching Pastor and Vice President of Executive Projects and Spiritual Programs Johnnie Moore said. “They are all convinced that Liberty University is pivotal See BACHMANN, A2

CASTING A BALLOT — Despite long lines, the local election results in 2009 were impacted by the influx in student voters. LETTER TO THE CITY: FALWELL RESPONDS, A3 perceived, Corry said. “City Council instructed staff to conduct hearings earlier this year,” Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said. “We learned today that the process is not moving as fast as Council had instructed. It is possible that staff delayed the hearings schedule so that the decision on whether or not Liberty would have its own polling place in Vines would be made after this November’s election. ”

Currently, the redistricting proposal, which includes the precinct changes at Liberty, is being presented in public hearings to allow the voters in the districts involved to voice their opinions on the matters at hand. “The public meetings are held to explain to Wards two and three the proposed changes,” Lynchburg City Attorney Mr. Walter C. Erwin III said. “Ward three currently has too See VOTING, A3

The Virginia Board of Health approved emergency temporary abortion clinic regulations on a 12-1 vote Thursday, Sept. 15, in response to legislation passed earlier this year by the General Assembly. These stringent regulations, if approved by all relevant parties involved in the executive branch review process, will be in place by Dec. 31 and stay in effect while the board develops long-term regulations for Virginia. “The approval of the regulations by the Virginia Board of Health sends a clear and compelling message that any and all abortion clinics in Virginia must abide by these minimum standards,” Delegate T. Scott Garrett said. The legislation deals with a myriad of issues involving the proper method and See ABORTION, A2
