Ensemble Q 2025 Brochure

Page 1

"This year is about you, our audience. This year is about bringing music to the people, to unusual places, to give you experiences that you will never forget."

It is with the greatest pleasure that we present the 2025 Ensemble Q series. On the back of the incredible year that saw the ensemble gain national recognition and accolades from the full audiences on our Musica Viva national tour and now with the support of Arts Queensland and some very generous private donors, we are able to confidently walk into 2025 with dreams and plans realised.

We bring you a new and exciting metropolitan series on Monday nights at QPAC where we will thrill you with an array of incredible music like the super atmospheric Black Angels by George Crumb to the exquisite Grand Septet by Franz Berwald. We partner with the Queensland Art Song Festival to bring Queensland an important Australian Premiere, that of Jörg Widmann's extraordinary realisation of Schumann's Dichterliebe, with the baritone that all of Europe is talking about, Benjamin Appl.

Our Sunday series moves to the incredible GHD Advanced Engineering building at University of Queensland in St Lucia, where audience members can stroll across the lake and attend a gorgeous afternoon of the most loved chamber works paired with works by outstanding female composers.

The highly popular Whiskey bar series expands to 5 performances and is anticipated to sell out quickly so please don't miss out. A two part series has been added to Elm House, a gorgeous venue at the top of the rainforest-clad Mount Glorious, 50 minutes from Brisbane.

We are very excited to partner with The Australian Voices in 2025, after hearing their incredible sound and musicianship in one of their 2024 performances. This choir is an absolute jewel in the crown of Australian music and needs to be heard by a wide audience, so we are working with them to present a special event, 'Requiem', featuring acclaimed Australian composer Paul Stanhope's stunningly atmospheric 'Requiem' alongside a world premiere by John Rotar. The Australian Voices also appear in another new event 'Soundscapes & Stories - a One Day Festival' at Sandgate Town Hall. This day has been designed to give you, our audience, the most unique, fun, moving and immersive experience possible.

Our commitment to Australian music brings performances of works by Calvin Bowman, Sarah Hopkins, Wilfred Lehmann, Tristan Coelho, Joe Twist, the revelation of two young composers and the launch of our very first Composer in Residence program featuring the extraordinary composer Melody Eötvös.

Highlights of our education program include a partnership with ANAM that provides a prestigious placement program for one highly skilled young musician in our Sundays by the Lakes series, and we join with 4MBS FM to provide a side-by-side orchestra for their Gilbert and Sullivan Gala. And we're extremely excited to be launching Mini Q, a unique initiative that initially brings four very young superstar musicians together to form a string quartet that is intended for longevity and growth as a united, inspired and well informed ensemble. They will attend intensive workshops during their school holidays and later in the year will feature in Ensemble Q performances.

We hope our program inspires you and we look forward to meeting you at our concerts.

QPAC SERIES GRAND SEPTET

7pm MONDAY 17 MARCH

QPAC CONCERT HALL

Indulge in a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of chamber music and in particular, the septet formation, blending timeless classics with contemporary innovation. We begin with Antonín Dvořák’s Bagatelles, arranged by Trish Dean for septet, which transforms the composer’s folkinspired miniatures into a vibrant ensemble showcase. Ernő Dohnányi’s Serenade for String Trio follows, blending Hungarian charm with fiery virtuosity and showcasing the combined talents of Adam Chalabi, Christopher Moore and Trish Dean. We’re delighted to introduce the world premiere of a new work by Ensemble Q 2025 Composer in Residence, Melody Eötvös, whose imaginative compositions consistently bring a new and exciting voice to Australian chamber music. The program concludes with the Swedish romantic period composer Franz Berwald’s Grand Septet, an exuberant and lyrical gem that needs a much larger place in the masterpiece category of chamber music.

BLACK ANGELS & RED DEATH

7PM MONDAY 19 MAY

QPAC CONCERT HALL

Black Angels and Red Death presents a captivating collection of works that explore themes of remembrance, conflict, fantasy, and deep introspection. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin pays tribute to the elegance of Baroque music while mourning friends lost in World War I, reimagined here with Paul Dean’s arrangement that highlights its delicate charm. George Crumb’s Black Angels plunges us into a haunting soundscape filled with eerie, amplified strings and unconventional techniques, reflecting the turmoil of the Vietnam War era. Caplet’s Conte Fantastique, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death, evokes a chilling narrative of inevitability through its lush, atmospheric writing for harp and strings. The program culminates with Tchaikovsky’s heart-wrenching Adagio Lamentoso from his final symphony, presented in Trish Dean’s intimate arrangement that captures the movement’s profound melancholy and farewell to life. Each piece offers a unique window into the composers’ worlds, filled with emotion, reflection, and storytelling.

Led by the esteemed guest violinist, Zöe Black and featuring Ensemble Q’s Emily Granger on harp.

A POET’S LOVE

7PM MONDAY 25 AUGUST QPAC CONCERT HALL

Arguably the most exciting baritone of his generation, 43 year old German-British Benjamin Appl returns to Australia to perform for the Queensland Art Song Festival and Ensemble Q. Described by Limelight magazine in his 2023 Sydney Opera House five star reviewed debut as “beautiful, powerful, tender and menacing by turns”, Appl was chosen to perform the European Premiere of Jörg Widmann’s new and incredible realisation of Schumann’s Dichterliebe (Schumannliebe) and now, the Australian premiere with Ensemble Q, in partnership with the Queensland Artsong Festival.

Adam Chalabi is known and admired for his exquisitely poetic violin playing and will treat us to a rare performance of Chausson’s Poème in an arrangement by the composer for violin, string quartet and piano. And our Germany-based violist Benjamin Roskams will be flying across the world to join Paul Dean and Daniel de Borah in Schumann’s dreamily romantic Märchenerzählungen.

This is going to be a program full of love, poetry and beauty, with a twist.

“the way he navigated the song’s transformation, from disappointment to obsession, was so gripping and troublingly real, I heard people all around me exhale afterward, as if Mr. Appl had rendered them breathless.”

Trouble is, I feel so spoilt that it’s hard to go back to the regular concert hall.” “I have been absolutely blown away by the opportunity to experience the Whiskey Bar series. There is something so life-affirming and generous about being let in on such intimate experiences of great music.” “The passion and pleasure that Ensemble Q enjoy when performing at The Whiskey Bar is wonderfully infectious. I always wish there was more!” “Ensemble Q has quickly become an essential part of Australia’s musical life.”” The players are top class and the range of music is exquisitely diverse. They deserve huge support as they play all over Australia.” “Ensemble Q pushes the boundaries of the classical repertoire. I just love Ensemble Q!”” The eclectic venue and the close up quarters between the musicians and the audience is really very different to attending a big classical concert and brings the music to a much more personal level.. Thank you, thank you, thank you and I look forward to next year”” Through the passion of Ensemble Q that music is available, affordable and superbly performed. To hear and see it come to life almost within touching distance is a privilege for any music lover. Ensemble Q’s artistry sits within a realm that I dearly love - a deliciously Australian irreverence, a larrikin quality that pervades all that the Ensemble offers, so far removed from anything stitched up and yet so very pure to the truth and integrity of the music and the composers.”
