Housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable and unattainable to many Australians. The Unley living village creates a new community hub in the suburbs of Adelaide. It delivers affordable housing, social housing, community engagement on the ground floor as well as urban farming initiatives. The build brings together members of the community and creates a connection to the Unley shopping centre for the wider neighbourhood.
The design includes 76 dwellings, retail spaces, a community greenhouse and rooftop farming initiatives. Sustainable practises, energy, and material use was a primary focus driving the design.
The design achieves 7.5 NatHERS Stars
Design Goals:
-Provide Affordable And Sustainable Living
-Engage Wider Community With Activated Ground Plane
-Promote Education, Healthy Living and Sustainable Practises With Urban Farming
-Create A Thriving Community Promoting Socialising And Collaboration
-Minimise Environmental Impact Of Building And Operation

The Warlpiri people are the indigenous people native to Yuendumu. These people suffered great injustices and displacement due to mining interests of European Colonisers. Yuendumu is a small town on Tanami Road home to over 700 Warlpiri People.
This design is a culture centre/museum for them to store and display their history as well as come together as a community.
The Warlpiri people have a rich culture, and one common cultural practise is group ‘yarning’. This is a significantly important process where people come together to share stories, learn, build respectful relationships, and pass on cultural knowledge through narrative.
They also have traditions involving gender separation. It was important that each gender has their own separated gallery and separated yarning spaces for important gender-specific cultural teachings.
From a construction standpoint the goal of this design was to create a superstructure and build the program within a substructure below.
Design Goals:
-Create a Place For a Community to Thrive
-Honour and Respect the Traditions, Culture and Artifacts of the Walpiri People
-Encourage Socialisation Whilst Respecting Gender Separation Practises

4. The Pulteney Hub

Type: Residential & Commercial Office Design
Location: 207-209 Pulteney Street, Adelaide
Themes: Universal Design Community
Biophilic Design

Software: Sketchup + Layout
Adobe Illustrator + InDesign
As part of a group task, I designed the residential and office floors of a 17-storey proposed mixed use development on Pulteney Street.
The residential floors were for people aged 55 and up. Informed by my research into universal design I designed these floors to be fully accessible meaning life’s injuries and illnesses wouldn’t force residents to leave their home. The design also focuses on socialisation to connect the elderly to each other as loneliness is one of the bigger problems this age demographic faces
The office floors were designed for a later fit-out. Having completed a research paper on biophilic architecture I designed these floors to incorporate different elements mimicking the experience of nature. Research finds this can improve moods, reduce heart-rates, reduce stress, increase physical wellbeing, improve productivity, and improve the user perception of the space.
Design Goals:
-Create Accessible Apartments and Social Spaces For Retirement Age Residents
-Implement Biophilic Architecture Into The Commercial Office Floors

Hart Island is a 131-acre island off the coast of Manhattan and the Bronx. Historically this island has been used as New Yorks mass burial ground for the unidentified or otherwise unfortunate. The island is not accessible to the public.
Since its inception in 1869 over 1 million bodies of unidentified adults and children have been buried here including the victims of homelessness, AIDS, smallpox, yellow fever, and most recently COVID-19. Those buried here have no money or family and don’t get a proper burial.
The design of this mortuary aims to give proper send off to the unfortunate souls who find their way here. Based on Buddhist beliefs, the souls sent here are freed from their physical form and returned to the earth. This is done through a natural, gentle and sustainable process called Aquamation, a process where only ashes remain. At this facility, the ashes will then be taken and spread out into the ocean where the souls can be free.
This building is located on the coast, has a luscious green roof and a central garden. This surrounds the entire process in nature, holding spiritual significance whilst also creating a relaxing environment for the workers, given the sensitive nature of their jobs.
Design Goals:
-Create a Spiritual Experience For The Souls Arriving On The Island
-Integrate Nature For It’s Spiritual And Relaxing Qualities
-Provide Refuge And Separation From Main Processing Area
-Seamlessly Connect The Building Form To The Island

Environmental Considerations

Green Roof
The green roof on both buildings reduces interior ambient temperature by absorbing and reflecting sunlight. Other benefits include reducing surrounding temperature and providing a rainwater buffer.

Trees & Vegetation
The gardens in and around the site provide shade from harsh sunlight and reduce solar heat gain. The dense gardens also cool breezes that pass through.

Shading & Glazing
Large vertical fins block harsh angles of sunlight. Glazing is placed strategically to allow sunlight into the work spaces during the winter months.

Aquamation
The process of aquamtion is a far more sustainable method than cremation. It uses 5x less energy and produces less than 10% of the emissions. The water waste produced is a treated solution that can flow safetly through the wastewater system.
