Form-giving inspiration for the project is derived from the vocabulary of animal musculature.

Tendons in particular are metaphors for connecting between site elements, specifically the light rail and bus transit station. The two transportation hubs largely serve people of varying economic backgrounds, thus making the site ripe for an intermingling of these socioeconomic groups. Using a stretched tendon as a metaphor for form, we can begin to underscore a historic tension between economic classes while simultaneously simulating the potential energy bundled within for what a more equitable future may be like. This can start with equal access to the same healthy and sustainable foods.

In order to sustainably feed the exponentially growing global population, the vertical farm must become a more prevalent and ubiquitous urban typology.

However, if sustainably feeding a global population is our objective, a vertical farm does not go nearly far enough—we must either dramatically reduce our consumption of meat or find a way to “grow it” sustainably. The goal of this project is aimed at achieving the latter by providing facilities dedicated to researching a more efficient method of culturing meat—that is, an in vitro rather than in vivo method of growing meat. In addition, research, education and small-scale production are secondary objectives that are intended to increase public exposure to this avant-garde (soon to be mainstream) method of meat production. The vertical farm and cultured meat facility will take root in downtown Charlotte, NC in the immediate vicinity of a light rail stop and bus transit terminal.

China’s largest provider of soy used to feed livestock is Brazil, where it is lucrative for farmers to cut down rainforests to make way for crops, which they are paid very generously for.

There are countless benefits to culturing meat. The deplorable conditions of slaughterhouses no longer have to be questioned because the slaughter of livestock will no longer be practiced. One live biopsy from a single animal can produce well beyond its standard physical limitation due to the capacity to mass produce muscle cells. Cultured meat is a

sustainable and ethically responsible method of feeding the ever-growing population that inhabits our planet. Land previously used for grazing and crop production can finally be given an opportunity to rest and heal from the brutal over-farming it has endured for centuries. It is time to embrace the new agricultural revolution before us.

In a country where water is used faster than it can replenish itself and a world where global climate change is occurring more and more rapidly, Houston is not immune to the effects felt by increasing water scarcity.

Importing water will soon be the norm, thus a water bottle distribution center only makes sense in a society reliant on water importation.

The goals of such a warehouse is to mimic the properties of water through various design elements.

From facades that imitate tear drops to a fabric roof simulating the splash of water on impact, a water bottle distribution center becomes symbolic of is function.

The corner of the building extends over a dramatic gradient and is made transparent, allowing one to see the manipulation of the interior landscape to create occupiable spaces whilst accommodating a winding ramp that helps sculpt the space.

Fluid columns pull the fabric roof down and collect water by siphoning it through the building. A mezzanine-level administrative space overlooks the warehouse while dodging columns as it protrudes into the space.

In their current states, Pinecrest, Wingate, and Ponderosa exist as distinctly different neighborhoods.

This proposal suggests two pedestrian/bike trails that stitch the neighborhoods together, creating a conduit that traverses all three communities. Part of the trail uses existing infrastructure, while the most important components utilize vacant lots and informal footpaths to get from one neighborhood to the next. The hopes of this trail are to stimulate interaction between older and younger demographics, using Wingate Park and the accompanying resource center as a focal point.

The theme of stitching occurs both physically as well as socially. The objective is to use the physical stitching (paths) to facilitate social stitching (e.g. programs bringing together the youth with the elderly) by creating opportunities for movement to occur between isolated neighborhoods of different demographic types.

Landscape Urbanism is a class in its second year taught by Professor Jeffrey Nesbit at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The class entails an extensive inquiry of four different U.S. Navy Shipyards: Brooklyn, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle. Students are divided into multi-disciplinary teams with different levels of experience, thus providing a diverse cross-section of intellectual capital.

U.S. Navy Shipyards have irrefutably colorful histories as public use, private ownership, citizens, and the military engage and interface in multitudinous ways over time. They can provide employment for cities, drive local economies, generate a nostalgia for manufacturing, house artist colonies, or even evict their residents. Navy Shipyards embody a chronic cycle of creative and destructive processes, despite no longer creating machines of destruction.

While there is a relatively recursive pattern regarding the histories of navy ship-yards, each individual shipyard personifies a unique history inextricably linked to local social, cultural, and historical factors. Some attributes stand out more than others, but in order to create a comparable measure of each site there had to be some level in consistency in what was considered pertinent to observe. The underlying criteria that drove the inquiries of these sites are histories, mapping, ecologies, and grounds.

After building a comprehensive understanding of the site through these metrics, inquiry shifts to postulating how landscape may become integrated with these sites in such a way that induces productivity, albeit not in the traditional sense of the navy shipyard. Instead, students confront contemporary problems while retaining a sense of identity in respect to a particular site’s place and history.

SPAIN

Travel is one of the most important opportunities an architect can experience. I had the privilege of pursuing independent research in Spain courtesy of AIA Charlotte and UNCC’s School of Architecture.

My research entailed an investigation of three cities and their urban armatures in an exploration of the use of public space, using a framework of identifying urban criteria put forward by Kevin Lynch: axes, edges, nodes, paths, and landmarks. The three cities selected in Spain was for the diversity of regional dialects and cultures, climates, and population densities.

Barcelona is a cosmopolitan metropolis with a strong Catalan identity on the coast of the Mediterranean. Seville is a modest city in Southern Spain with a distinct Flamenco culture where it is much drier and hotter. Santiago de Compostela, in the northwest of Spain, has a wetter and cooler climate with Galician roots. I arrived here during the climax of el camino de Santiago, an annual pilgrimage that hosts travelers from all across Europe.

The methods used to capture the genius loci of public spaces incorporates analytical photography as well as codified planometric sketches that attempt to convey the uses of space at various times.

The power of travel is transformative and my experiences continue to influence my design thinking to this day.

SPAIN Seville has a variety of different public plazas, each imbued with unique character. Hand sketches attempt to capture a brief snapshot of use at the time of the drawing, with graphics conveying modes of transportation with vectors expressing the direction and speed at which people were moving.

Prior to my travels, I speculated the relationship of urban armatures across different cities in a series of charrettes on top of satellite images informed by research on the spaces involved.

My assumptions were quickly turned on their heads, making for a revelatory experience in conducting my research. The image with a plan trace over it conveys one of my favorite instances of the public using a space in a particular way. Waiting to get into the cathedral, people formed a line along the perimeter of the courtyard only where the shadows fell to provide relief from the extreme heat.

The line disconnects where the picture was taken (the location in which I was standing) at the entry of the church and the far side of the courtyard where a couple can be seen walking across with a stroller.

To make a memory requires context.

You may remember what the weather was like, the people you were with, or the activity you were doing. One of the strongest markers of a memory, however, is the physical place in which it occurs.

Maps are a comprehensive tool that records the relative positioning of places within space. It could be how buildings in a city are organized or how infrastructure navigates a landscape. More usefully, maps are used as tools to help get from one place to another. It establishes landmarks, paths, nodes, edges, and boundaries to help orient a reader to their position in space.

The crux of maps is that they are oftentimes overwhelming with the sheer amount of information they contain. By being more disciplined and reductive, it is possible to parse down that information into more manageable layers. It just so happens that maps are also a suitable container for memories. By eliminating everything except the places where memories are built and their significant context, you can see a multitude of memories in one simple drawing. One map could bring back memories of a hometown you grew up in, the university you studied at, a trip abroad overseas, or an unforgettable honeymoon.

Eden is a rural North Carolina town with a dying economy. This fragmented map is representative of locations significant to my childhood and upbringing, intended to be pleasantly nostalgic as well as sadly eulogistic (as most rural towns are).

MEMAP In paying tribute to a powerful relationship, the lakes and waterways of the greater Charlotte region were a critical component.

These two partners were practically raised on the water, albeit on two different lakes. Regardless, they managed to find each other and get to share their passion for the water with each other on a level that only they seem to understand.

MEMAP The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona collides with the ordered Cerda grid, confining it to a mesmerizing microcosm of winding alleys and delightful urban moments.

The memorability of the grid beyond exists entirely in the vastness of its ubiquity.

Conversely, the memorability of the Gothic Quarter consists of an amalgamation of disparate architectural objects. It was for that reason that memory latched onto specific instances of discovery and observation.
