The Crescendo Arts Academy is a performance arts high school that embodies the essence of a continuous artistic journey.

Nestled in the Old Fourth Ward in Atlanta, Georgia, its architecture is a powerful symbol of the ever-evolving world of the performing arts. This circular design offers a quiet, yet profound statement, underlining the school’s commitment to creating an environment that aligns with the fluidity and transformation inherent in artistic endeavors. As students traverse through the building, they encounter a physical representation of their artistic growth, reminding them that their education and creative development are circular processes, continually unfolding and spiraling.

Precedent Study: The Hunt Library - Snohetta

Roof-mounted solar panels are used to pre-heat domestic hot water. This helps contribute to a 31% reduction in energy usage.

The fitted glass and fixed external aluminum shading system help diminish heat gain while maximizing views and ambient natural light.

A vegetated green and rain gardens roof helps preserve the local natural hydrology by controlling rainwater runoff.

CONTAINER REFUGEE CAMP

Term: Spring 2023

Class: Architecture Studio I

Instructor: Robert Woodhurst

Nestled near El Paso, Texas, this architectural project reimagines housing for asylum seekers at the US/Mexico border.

This project aspires to be more than a shelter; it envisions a dignified haven where asylum seekers find not only respite but a platform for rebuilding their lives. By repurposing shipping containers and employing the principles of shape grammar, this architectural venture emerges as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of innovative design in addressing the humanitarian challenges of our time.

Design Parti

Based on the concept of shape grammar, the architectural intervention simultaneously maintains a delicate balance between complexity and navigability. Navigating the camp is straightforward, yet the intricate interplay of spaces ensures a rich and multifaceted environment that responds to the inherent complexity of human experiences. The result is a harmonious blend of order and spontaneity - a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the human spirit.

EDEN NEST

Term: Spring 2023

Class: Architecture Studio I

Instructor: Robert Woodhurst

Nestled in the heart of Savannah's historic charm, Eden Nest is a fusion of innovation and mat-building typology gracing Orleans Square.

This mixed-use marvel seamlessly blends retail spaces, offices, and meeting areas, crowned by a rooftop terrace with a café. More than a structure, Eden Nest is a living organism designed to infuse new life into Savannah through reurbanism. The adaptable mat-building typology becomes the canvas for this vision, aiming to transform Orleans Square into a dynamic hub where commerce, culture, and community converge.

Concept Diagrams

Eden Nest is a testament to the transformative power of architecture. It doesn't merely exist; it dances with the spirit of Savannah, inviting residents and visitors alike to partake in a harmonious celebration of urban living.

Choregraphy of the Building

A processional promenade flows seamlessly through the entire building, mirroring the rhythmic grace found in Matisse's masterpieces. This journey is an exploration of space, an experience that invites inhabitants to engage with their surroundings in a way that echoes the ebb and flow of artistic inspiration. SECTION B 1/16” = 1’ - 0”

As we apply the concept of reurbanism to the historic city of Savannah, Eden Nest stands as a beacon, signaling a future where the mat-building is not just a structure but a dynamic, living entity that enriches the fabric of the city’s architectural legacy.
