DEF US E E X PEC T ED T O RIS E A F T ER 2017 Current voluntary fuel economy standards combined with the trucking industry’s need to maintain profit margins has led to a downward trend in diesel fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. However, as older trucks get phased out, there are more trucks on the road using Selective Catalytic Reduction to keep emissions in check, and that means Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) use is trending up. Also, new diesel technologies are resulting in higher NOx emissions, which also means increased DEF use. As the DEF supply chain continues to evolve, it’s important for trucking companies to find a trusted partner such as Lube-Tech to help manage supply and avoid unexpected costs due to supply and demand fluctuations.

DIESEL ENGINE OIL SPECS CHANGING WILL YOU BE READY? In 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency introduced new regulations intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and set fuel economy standards for medium and heavy-duty diesel engines. These new regulations are set to go into effect in the year 2017. These new regulations place demands on diesel engine oils that can’t be met with the current American Petroleum Institute (API) diesel lubricant standard CJ-4. In 2011 work began to create a new specification; this work and the process it entailed is referred to as Proposed Category 11 (PC-11.)

The current API CJ-4 specification was introduced in October 2006, and is scheduled to be superseded by CK-4 and FA-4 in March 2017. The new standard focuses on performance enhancement in the areas of catalyst and particulate filter compatibility, oxidative stability, enhanced wear protection and fuel economy.

What does this mean for the diesel lubricant end user? CK-4 oils will be backward compatible and cover applications where API CJ-4 oils were specified. On the other hand, FA-4 oils are geared toward fuel economy and will consist of viscosity grades such as 5W30. FA-4 oils are designed for the engine manufacturer looking to achieve increased fuel economy in engine models 2017 and beyond. Furthermore, FA-4 oils will carry a “L” designation after the SAE viscosity grade such as “5W30 L” This is to further distinguish the CK and FA oils as the latter may not be recommended for use in all new engines and applications.

Complete Fuel Testing Capabilities On-Road fleets require periodic fuel testing to ensure healthy fuel storage tanks and vehicle fuel systems. Minnesota mandates that diesel fuel contain 5-percent biodiesel in winter and 10-percent in summer. FIGHT CORROSION, REDUCE COSTS A HEAVY WASH IMPROVES YOUR BUSINESS In 2002 the U.S. Federal Highway Administration released the results of a twoyear study on the effects of metal corrosion. It determined that the direct cost of corrosion across various industries in the United States was a staggering $276-billion. Of that, $6.45-billion is spent on corrosion-related maintenance and repair on motor vehicles in the transportation industry.

The calcium chloride and magnesium chloride used to treat roads is highly corrosive to on-road vehicles. And, when mixed with sand and other road treating agents, it can pack into the cracks and crevices of a vehicle and cause major damage. If not cleaned properly it can continue to attract moisture over time, corroding parts even in the summer months. One of the biggest factors in taking care of fleet vehicles is washing the underbody surface, and using an effective wash system and cleaner is a key factor in the effectiveness of the wash.

BULLETPROOF YOUR LIFTS KEEP YOUR SHOP SAFE AND RUNNING ANSI standards mandate lifts need to be inspected annually. But standards are only one reason to get lifts inspected – avoiding down time and ensuring a safe working environment are two big reasons to keep list inspections at the top of any shop equipment maintenance list.

Lift inspections should be performed by qualified inspectors who are certified by the Automotive Lift Institute (ALI). ALI-certified inspectors will be familiar with the electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems of any given lift. Lube-Tech Equipment Service Installation (ESI) technicians not only inspect lifts, they install them and maintain them.

Lube-Tech’s ESI technicians have start-to-finish knowledge of lifts and can perform in-depth inspections at any time. However, daily inspections are a must to spot problems early. MANAGING YOUR WASTE FLUIDS THE CHAIN OF LIABILITY Fluids are the lifeblood of a trucking fleet. But those same fluids that keep your vehicles alive can get you in big trouble if not managed correctly when they reach the end of their lifecycle. While these fluids are not hazardous waste, mixing them can create hazardous waste. For example, used oil, when mixed with any volume of another waste fluid (brake cleaner or antifreeze), can make the entire volume hazardous waste. These “mystery drums” can require expensive testing and often result in being categorized as a hazardous waste by default because of the complexity and expense associated with proving it is not a hazardous waste. Understanding what can and what cannot be mixed can save a shop thousands of dollars and perhaps its reputation. Some best practices are: • Never mix fluids unless you have been explicitly told you can • Place materials into dedicated containers and label using standard names • Keep drain pans separate • Always be conscious of what fluids are in close proximity to each other
