High Point Village

Lubbock’s High Point Village is a faith-based nonprofit in Lubbock designed to provide an enrichment facility and residential living community for those who have special needs. They serve to create a community where individuals with disabilities can live to their full potential. They’re a facility that provides their Villagers a variety of vocational, educational, social, and motivational activities.

One of these activities that the Villagers can participate in is the High Point Village Hand Bell Choir.

This program has the Villagers practice up to an hour each day of class where they not only learn about keeping a rhythm, but they develop the ability to perform with pride. This year, we had the privilege of having the choir perform at our annual Community Prayer Luncheon in front of 450 guests. They performed several songs that showcased their talent and passion for showcasing their faith through music.

The Chamber was privileged to have the handbell choir perform at this year’s event, and want to send our sincerest thanks to all of the High Point Villagers and their staff for providing music for our guests and for letting us see firsthand the talent and commitment of the Villagers and the High Point staff.

How has being a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce helped to increase your business, relationships in the business community and/or community involvement? Being a part of the Chamber has allowed us to gain more exposure within the Lubbock business community, and given us the opportunity to meet many business people that we might not have without the Chamber.

When did the Top Tier join the Chamber? As part of Texas Tech, Top Tier Catering has been a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce for many years.

What is your favorite part of being a member of the Chamber? We enjoy meeting and getting to know more of what’s happening in the community and around town. Business After Hours is always a fun time as well.

In what ways is Top Tier Catering involved with the Chamber? Top Tier participates in as many Chamber activities as we can. We also get to cater to many of the Chamber events.

Does Top Tier Catering have a favorite Lubbock Chamber event? Uncorked is our most favorite Chamber event!

About Top Tier: We are the one of the premier caterers in Lubbock. We handle an endless variety of events both large and small as well as everything in between. Our culinary staff can custom create a specific menu for any event. We host all events out of the Merket Alumni Center as well as the Frazier Pavilion but are not limited to just campus events. We also do events at various winery’s, event centers as well as private homes. We are proud to be a part of Texas Tech and the Lubbock community!

Get to Know Board Member, Linda Gaither Where do you work and what does your job entail? I work for WestMark Realtors. I sell Residential Real Estate.

How did you get involved with the Chamber and what keeps you involved? I was encouraged when I first started Real Estate 25 years ago. I am a graduate of Leadership Lubbock and I also served as Chairwoman of the Lubbock Chamber in 2005.

The Chamber and the wonderful people of Lubbock keep me involved in the Chamber.

What is your favorite event or program of the Chamber?

I like all of the our programs that involve the younger people and youth of our community. The future is in our younger generation!

What are some of your other community leadership roles?

Leadership at Lubbock Christian University and Advisory Board at FirstBank and Trust Finish this sentence: Never again will I… miss an opportunity of what the Chamber can do for them.

YEA! CEOs Showcase Businesses at Trade Show Local middle and high school students from the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) class of 2016-17 revealed their new start-up businesses to the public and sold their products and services at the YEA! Trade Show on Sat., May 20, at South Plains Mall.

The presentation was a culmination of 30 weeks of hard work, resulting in the graduates owning and operating their own businesses.

The YEA! program, hosted by the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, is gearing up for its second year at the Texas Tech Innovation Hub. YEA! teaches kids ages 11-18 how to turn their passions, skills and talents into real businesses. In YEA!, students come up with a Big Idea, pitch that idea for real funding and launch a fully formed, legally registered business – literally transforming students into CEOs! YEA! graduates have appeared on Shark Tank, Hatched, won national scholarship and business competitions, attended the Harvard School of Business, among other Ivy League schools, and successfully launched over 4,000 fully formed and functioning businesses.

Growing Community Leaders Meet Leadership Lubbock Class Member, Neal Spradlin Why did you apply for the 2017 Leadership Lubbock Class? I was interested in connecting with and building relationships with other Lubbock leaders who have the same goal as me: to make the City of Lubbock into an even greater city than it already is by connecting with one another and sharing ideas, visions, and goals. My wife grew up in Lubbock, her family still lives here, and we plan on raising our family here and calling Lubbock home for the rest of our lives. The Leadership Lubbock Program has allowed me the opportunity to become connected with local leaders who share my same vision of always trying to improve the quality of life in Lubbock for businesses and for its citizens. I’ve also heard about the great leadership training that it offered. So far, Leadership Lubbock has not disappointed.

What are some of your favorite Leadership Lubbock events to date? This is a tough one. It’s a copout answer, but I’ve enjoyed all the events. Because I had to miss the first meeting in January, the Austin trip in February was great because that’s when I first met and connected with the other class members. I enjoyed getting to know the other folks in the class, while also exploring the sights and sounds of our Capitol. Lubbock 101 was a fantastic day as well, being able to learn about Lubbock and its past, present, and future was great. The day with David Miller and the Spirit Ranch day were also incredibly rewarding. I was able to take away a lot of insightful information to help me grow personally and professionally.

What do you feel is the most rewarding part of being part the Leadership Lubbock? Getting to know the other individuals in the 2017 Class has been the most rewarding part of Leadership Lubbock. All the people I’ve met and gotten to know are all heroes in their own right and really are an inspiration. It’s rewarding to learn and grow personally and professionally with each of the members of the class.

Why is the Leadership Lubbock program important to you?

To learn more about Lubbock is important to me because this is my family’s home. I want to be able to learn about the city and understand it better so that I can somehow contribute to the city’s success. Moreover, personal and professional growth is important to me - I always want to find ways to improve myself and make myself more valuable both at home and at work.

What do you hope to do to gain from the Leadership Lubbock Class? I hope to gain long lasting personal and professional relationships with the other members of the class. I believe that all of us will be able to help one another throughout our careers because of the connections we’ve made. I also hope to continue to gain valuable leadership skills and learn more about the City of Lubbock.

Who do you work for? Crenshaw, Dupree & Milam, LLP What is your position? Associate Attorney (Practice areas: Insurance Defense Litigation, Commercial Litigation, Mediation, Civil Rights - Section 1983/Governmental Immunity, Corporate & Business Representation, Criminal Defense) Share some information about your family: My wife, Libby, and I have been married for three years. Libby grew up here in Lubbock and went to Texas Tech for undergrad and for her master’s degree. She works at Texas Tech in the Office of Planning and Assessment. Her office promotes, facilitates, and leads institutional effectiveness by measuring, analyzing, and assessing institutional data to ensure improvement and accreditation. Our daughter, Norah, turns two-years-old in June.

Libby and Norah are the center of my universe.

Lubbock Business Network Legislative Benefactor:

Voice of Business Five Things to Know about the Chamber’s Full Court Press DOL Fiduciary Rule •DOL in April extended the implementation of the Fiduciary Rule for 60 days; however, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals denied plaintiffs’ request for an actual stay of the legislation pending litigation. Plaintiffs submitted opening briefs in our appeal to the 5th Circuit on May 2.

Senator Charles Perry Visits with Chamber Government Relations Committee Senator Charles Perry visited with the Lubbock Chamber’s Government Relations committee on Fri., May 12.

Senator Perry provided an update on legislation important to the Lubbock business community, and also provided a forecast for how the final weeks of the legislative session may play out.

DOL Persuader Rule •DOL has filed a motion to extend the deadline to file their brief on the permanent injunction granted by Senior U.S. District Judge Cummings last year. Plaintiffs’ counsel agreed this would give DOL time to get a DOL secretary confirmed before taking our next steps in the case. Secretary of Labor Alexender Acosta has since been confirmed.

DOL Overtime Rule •DOL was granted two extensions of time to consider whether the agency wished to proceed with an appeal of the Eastern District of Texas injunction of the Overtime Rule. The most recent extension was set to expire on May 1. However, the 5th Circuit has granted another 60day extension. In granting the extension, the 5th Circuit continued the DOL’s deadline to file its reply brief to June 30, 2017. This most recent extension gives additional time to the DOL to evaluate its options, which includes abandoning the appeal and any further efforts to implement and enforce the overtime rule. However, although Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta does not appear to support the revisions to the Overtime Rule, he has expressed opinions that suggest he would support updating the overtime rule to some degree, possibly increasing the salary threshold to mirror inflation.

EPA Clean Power Plan •In late March, President Trump issued an executive order directing the EPA Administrator to immediately review the agency’s so-called Clean Power Plan regulations.

EPA Haze Rule •A late-March ruling made by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit left intact Texas’ stay of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Regional Haze Rule.

DBS Kids Wins Water-Smart Award for Spring Quarter

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce has announced that DBS Kids has been awarded the WaterSmart Award for Spring Quarter 2017.

Each quarter, the Chamber recognizes members who have implemented watersaving measures. The criteria to win can be anything from landscaping to rainfall capture systems to installing low-flow toilets and active promotion of water conservation.

DBS Kids has been honored because of its water conservation techniques for its daycare/preschool facility, which is located at 4322 Justice Ave. During the construction process of its new facility, DBS Kids did as much research as possible and quickly realized the importance of water conservation. It is important for the staff at DBS Kids to pass these lessons on to the younger generations that passes through its doors.

Some of the water-saving methods that DBS Kids uses are water-saving toilets and faucets and xeriscaping. These methods have created a healthier environment, reduced the maintenance and lowered expenses.

“Our landscape was designed with the environment in mind,” said Diana McPherson, owner of DBS Kids. “All the plants were selected by the amount of supplemental water needed to survive.

Due to our climate, drought tolerant plants were essential in the design plan.

The sprinkler system is set on mostly a drip system to avoid any run off or use of excess water. The system runs during the night on a set number of days for a set number of minutes in order to help conserve as much water as possible.”

DBS Kids has been a Chamber member since 2011.

“We have a member of the Chamber for six years,” McPherson stated. “During this time we have been fortunate enough to utilize the health insurance and the Chamber has been influential in helping us get our new location off the ground by providing much needed support. We were honored to have the Chamber help us with our ground breaking ceremony and more recently our ribbon cutting ceremony. Our experience with the Chamber has been so amazing that we are looking into other ways to be involved with this wonderful organization.”

Congressman Arrington Speaks to Young Professionals

Congressman Jodey Arrington was the mentor speaker at the last Young Professionals of Lubbock’s First Tuesday Networking.

The event was held on Tue., May 2, at LHUCA (Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts). The Congressman addressed the importance of networking and connecting with people in the community.

Chamber Ambassador Program Meet Jordan Putman, April Ambassador of the Month!

Congratulations to Jordan Putman for being named the April Ambassador of the Month. This was Putman’s first month of being an Ambassador and in doing so, she won her first Ambassador of the Month award!

“My parents (David and Kim Putman) have been Chamber members for a very long time, active Ambassadors as well,” said Putman. “I have seen such a growth in them as business people in the community as well as life-long friends and connections.”

As an independent sales associate for LegalShield, Putman has been working full-time for the company since February 2017. In her position, Putman talks to business owners’ employee groups about the employee benefits that LegalShield has to offer.

Putman’s favorite events as an Ambassador are the ribbon cuttings where she gets to see new facilities and meet the faces behind the stores and companies.

“I think the work the Ambassadors do around the community is so important and I feel blessed to be a part of it,” Putman stated. “I really love the continued interaction between Ambassadors. It’s a lot of fun to just get together.”

As an Ambassador there are several events to attend throughout the year such as ribbon cuttings for new members and businesses but Putman really loves the Hub City BBQ Jordan Putman receives her Ambassador of the Month Award at the Ambassador Monthly Cook-off. She is serving Luncheon. as the Co-Chair for the volunteers for the BBQ this year.

Outside of the Chamber, Putman has a hobby of flipping old antique furniture and attending craft shows. She and her mom love antiquing.
