Chairman ABOUT THE

The announcement of Cory Powell as the Chairman of the 2018 Board of Directors was a landmark event for the Chamber.

As he takes on his new role, he becomes the first African American to serve in this position in our 105-year history. He also becomes the first Texas Tech representative to hold the title. Cory currently serves as the Director of TTU Mentor Tech - Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Mentor Tech is a multi-year advising program that partners Tech students with university faculty to ease the transition into college. He works to ensure the program continues to provide mentors and protégés with support, opportunities, and relevant resources. Cory is very active in numerous community organizations and as an advocate for students; he currently serves as the campus advisor for the Visions of Light Gospel Choir.

In addition to Cory’s community leadership he is the recipient of a myriad of awards, including the 2015 Top Techsan Award. In July of 2004 and again in July of 2005, he was recognized for his leadership and civic involvements as one of 40 individuals named to Lubbock Illustrated Magazine’s “40 under 40” list. In the spring of 2006, he attended the African American Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. upon the nomination of former Congressman Randy Neugebauer and former Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Cory was selected as one of Lubbock’s “20 under 40” by the Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock in 2009 and graduated from the Leadership Lubbock program in 2002.

He and his wife Felicia have two children Cory II and Camille. An ordained minister, Cory is the founding Pastor of the New Dimensions Tabernacle Church in Lubbock.

“The Lubbock Chamber is fortunate to have Cory’s leadership and personal strengths for our upcoming year,” said Eddie McBride, President and CEO. “We’ve already begun preparing for the year and Cory’s focus is on membership and people. We will take advantage of the new Chairman’s intent to do something different, diversify chamber membership and reach out to those who may not fully understand the benefits of being a chamber member.”

REMEMBERING OUR FRIEND AND BOARD MEMBER, CHUCK WALKER The Lubbock Chamber recently lost a loyal and dedicated supporter with the passing of board member, Chuck Walker.

“Chuck was a great friend to so many. This is a tremendous loss not only to our board, but the Lubbock community as well,” stated Eddie McBride, President/ CEO. Walker served on the Lubbock Chamber board and executive committe as well as several committees over the years, with the Community Prayer Lunch Committee being near and dear to his heart.

“In honor of Chuck our board has decided to name his favorite luncheon after him. The 2018 luncheon will be called the Chuck Walker Community Prayer Luncheon.

We will miss his friendly smile, outgoing personality and his knowledge but most importantly we will miss his presence,” said McBride.

The Lubbock Chamber extends its deepest sympathy to his wife, Kim; his children, Bradley Walker and wife, Amber Lee; Katelyn Walker and Kenzie Walker as well as other family members on his passing.

“Charles “Chuck” Walker was born on February 17, 1962, to Charles and Sherry (Denton) Walker at Canyon, TX. He graduated from Pampa High School and attended West Texas State University. On August 7, 1982 he married Kimberly Gattis in Pampa, Texas. Chuck worked as the Vice President of Marketing and Sales for FirstCare Health Plans for thirty-two years and was a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee. Chuck was a loving husband, fa-

ther, and a devout follower of his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was kind and respectful towards everyone he encountered. Chuck loved the outdoors. He was always ready for a hunt of any kind. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.” (source: LubbockOnline.com)

WHY GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT METRIC

In today’s highly competitive business environment, there’s a constant and never-ending struggle that every entrepreneur must face. Those who can adapt will survive and thrive, resulting in near-boundless financial success and market saturation. Those who cannot see the proverbial forest through the trees, suffer a slow and inevitable death.

The struggle that exists today pits profits against the necessity for total customer satisfaction. The truth? Not everyone lives by the credo that the customer is always right.

Not everyone is as concerned with customer satisfaction as others are. But it’s those who don’t relent and cave into the pursuit of profits above all else who ultimately win in this ruthless business climate.

Clearly, for anyone who is serious about “making it,” so to speak, it’s imperative to realize the utter importance of rock-solid customer service. It’s not just about the customer always being right. It’s about treating your customers like you’d treat your family. And that doesn’t happen by talking down to them or looking for any possible way to extract more money from them. It happens by truly going out of your way for them and adding enormous amounts of value to the equation.

Today, if you’re delivering sincere value to your customers, you’re all-but guaranteeing your own success rather than sealing your fate in a coffin of corporate greed and advancement at all costs. In fact, it’s the very foundational understanding that a business must deliver value in order to transform the good to the great. That’s what creates icons in the world of business. And it all starts by having the consumer’s best interest at heart.

Amazon, Zappos, Apple and other corporate bellwethers, all harbored the bedrock understanding that it’s the customer above all else. That’s how they grew into the behemoths that they are. Sure, Amazon gobbled up Zappos, but it was because of their emulation of the same values and beliefs that Amazon lived by that the deal happened in the first place.

So, if you’re serious about creating a monumental business, or you’re looking to expand your existing footprint, it’s exigent to understand the reasons why customer service is so important. With consumers facing so many choices with who to do business with, you need to set yourself apart from the rest.

What makes you different? What added value do you bring to the table? Why should a customer work with you rather than your competitor? We’ve all heard the horror stories of people dealing with poor customer service. Yet, we seldom hear the raving-fan stories. Why is that?

The reason? Bad news travels very fast. Think viral. Warren Buffett once said, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” No truer words have been spoken, yet not all businesses think that way.

Why is customer service so important?

Anyone who is serious about making considerable headway in business needs to understand why customer service is so important. It’s not just for all the obvious fiscal

reasons. It goes far beyond that. It delves into the very existence of who we are and why we do the things that we do.

The way we treat our customers is indicative of the way we look at things in life. Are we short-sighted, merely searching for the next pay day, or does our vision give us a deeper understanding of the long-term implications of our actions? Clearly, if you want to make strides today, you really do have to place the customer on a pedestal.

And while there are ample reasons why any person should start a business in the first place, everyone needs to pay homage to the customer so that they can stay in business. The less short-sighted the approach is from any enterprise, the more likely it will be to achieve long term success.

1. Customer retention is far less expensive than customer acquisition.

On average, it costs approximately five times more to attract a new customer to your business than it costs to retain an existing customer. That logic on its own should highlight the importance of providing excellent customer service. Why risk losing a customer? It’s costly enough to locate new customers in the first place, and every business should do whatever it takes to ensure they stay happy and continue doing business with them.

2. Existing customers are more likely to buy for you than new customers.

Aside from simply trying to retain your existing customers for sake of it being less expensive to do so, it’s important to note that selling anything to anyone new is also far less likely. For the most part, the probability of selling to a new customer hovers in the range of 5-20 percent, whereas selling to an existing customer resides in the range of 60-70 percent.

3. Great customer service results in a reduction of overall problems.

By treating your customers like gold, you are sure to reduce the overall problems associated with your business, sales and the potential for any legal issues that might arise.

Treat your customers poorly, and you can almost be certain that you’ll run into problems at one point or another. And those problems can oftentimes lead to the ominous and untimely demise of your business.

4. Excellent customer service improves public persona and strengthens your brand.

If you’re interested in public perception, your reputation or the strength of your brand, you absolutely have to insure a high quality of customer service. Not only does this result in positive reviews, but it helps to solidify you in the minds of anyone searching for your type of products, services or information.

5. You’re more likely to retain your customers for longer.

When you offer a great customer service experience,

your customers are far more likely to stick around and use your business any chance the moment arises. Even when it comes to ancillarly services, consumers more willing to work with a business that they’ve had a great experience with before than to find someone new.

6. Word-of-mouth advertising is the best kind of advertising that money can’t buy.

You absolutely cannot buy word-of-mouth advertising -the kind that can have a monumental affect on a business.

It’s priceless. People are considerably more likely to listen to the advice of a friend than they are to heed the guidance from some online review or advertisement. Whether you’re trying to make money online or offline, great customer service will create an army of raving fans that will champion your business for you.

7. It improves employee turnover in your business.

Employees pay careful attention to how a company treats its customers. That resonates powerfully with people. When they see an employer treating their customers like gold, it delivers a sense of endowment, making them proud to be part of the team and making them more willing to stick around. When employees, on the other hand, are taught to undercut and discount customers for whatever reason, it does quite the opposite.

8. Great customer service opens doors for new partnerships and other opportunities.

Treating your customers like gold is infectious. It opens the doors for new partnerships, especially when other busi-

nesses see just how well you take care of your existing customers. It says a lot about a company and what they value when they care deeply about their customers. It’s something that you rarely find in business these days, but it most certainly paves the way for powerful parternships, collaborations and other opportunities.

9. It conveys strong moral values and beliefs in the company’s mission.

Taking care of your customers conveys a strong set of moral values and beliefs in the company’s mission. It means that it’s transcending the necessity for profits by focusing on building its tribe. It also means that there are greater forces at work here than mere profits. It’s indicative of a deeper desire to build something of value, to help others, and to somehow, in some way or another, change the world a bit by doing so.

10. It elongates the life of any business.

Today, only four out of every 100 businesses last through until the 10-year mark. That’s a massive 96 percent failure rate. When you ignore the needs of your customers, and you don’t focus on going out of your way for them, you’re cutting short the potential for longevity in business.

With so many obligations and responsibilities, if you’re serious about your business, you have to focus on the core -- your customers. Because, without them, you have no business at all.

How long have you been a YPL? Four years What do you feel is the most rewarding part of being a YPL member and committee member? The long lasting relationships are certainly the most rewarding aspect.

What do you want to achieve this year as Chairman? Increase the viability and visibility of the organization; have an impact in the Lubbock business sector.

Where do you work? First United Bank What is your position and what does it entail? Compliance Counsel – managing regulatory and legal issues for the bank.

Share some info about your family/personal life. I am married with a two year old son.

Why is being a YPL member important to you? It is important to me because, as a member, I can be at the ground level of an exciting (young) era in Lubbock’s history.

What is your favorite memory about Young Professionals of Lubbock? The community service project at the Hope Lodge remains a happy memory.

MEET LEADERSHIP LUBBOCK CHAIRMAN Why did you accept the role of Chairman? Serving as the 2018 Leadership Lubbock Chairman is a complete honor and a privilege. The Leadership Lubbock program has positively affected my life and career in so many ways and I’m proud to give back and serve as Chairman this year.

How long have you been associated with LL? I’m a 2015 Leadership Lubbock graduate, and have served on the steering committee for the past two years. As the 2018 Chairman, this will be my fourth year to be involved with the program.

What are some of your favorite LL events to attend?

Throughout the year, our days are consumed with amazing events! The 2018 Leadership Lubbock class is going to be exposed to some of the best speakers and will have a firsthand look at what industries make Lubbock great.

With that being said, some of my favorite events are: 1. Chuckwagon breakfast and cotton gin tour on Ag Day. 2. Spending the day with the Lubbock Police Department, the Lubbock Fire Department and touring the Lubbock County jail.

3. Being a part of David Miller’s leadership training.

4. Touring the Byron Martin ATC and seeing the advances LISD has made in education.

What do you feel is the most rewarding part of the LL committee? Without a doubt, the relationships that are developed with other committee members, class participants and city leaders.

Why is the LL program important to you? Being born and raised in West Texas, I know how great of a city Lubbock is; it has a thriving economic system and is a great community to raise a family. Without current and future leaders, Lubbock would just be another city in Texas.

Leadership Lubbock has a number of distinguished alumni that have played a key role in the continued success and growth of the Lubbock community. I think it is very important that Leadership Lubbock continue to develop future leaders for many years to come.

What impression do you hope to leave on the LL class?

I am proud to say that the Leadership Lubbock steering committee will have a hands-on approach from day one. Not only do we have several veteran committee members coming back, but we also have a number of new faces that we hope will bring some new and exciting ideas to the table. As a committee, we will make it a point to foster relationships and give the 2018 participants every opportunity to engage their class members and get to know each other on a personal level. What is your position and what does it entail? I’m currently a Vice President of Commercial Lending and our Branch Manager for our 82nd & Upland location at Centennial Bank.

Share some info about your family/personal life.

My wife, Jessica Marlar, and I have been married for two and a half years. We met at Texas Tech University while working as student assistants for Chancellor Kent Hance.

Jessica currently works for the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance as a Project Manager for Business Recruitment & Innovation. We have a black labradoodle dog named, Wilson. We enjoy spending time with our friends and family and serving our community through various organizations.

The Chamber continued its successful “Full Court Press” litigation effort first launched in 2016. Developments or new efforts in 2017 included: • The Clean Power Plan, stayed by an injunction from the Supreme Court in 2016, has been proposed for repeal. The Chamber has recently prepared and is filing official comment in this process.

• In late Fall, the Chamber filed a legal challenge in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Texas to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s anti-arbitration rule along with 10 other Texas chambers of commerce, the Texas Association of Business and the U.S. Chamber as well as various trade organizations. Congress ultimately passed a repeal of the regulation through the Congressional Review Act. • DOL in late November issued an 18-month delay of full enforcement of the fiduciary rule to July 2019. DOL also extended its temporary enforcement policy previously set to expire at the end of 2017 into July 2019.

Oral arguments were held in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans this Summer in our appeal of a Dallas Federal Court’s decision to uphold the fiduciary rule.

Prevailed with summary judgement granted in our favor that invalidated proposed changes to overtime regulations. Although their appeal in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals was not withdrawn, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) moved forward with a new rulemaking process to determine the next steps, and the Chamber signed onto an 18-page comment to DOL in that process.

The Chamber filed official comment after DOL proposed a “reverse rulemaking” of the Persuader Rule to rescind the rule or perhaps revise it. Earlier in the year, the 5th Circuit granted the DOL’s request to stay their appeal of Judge Sam Cummings’ summary judgement in our favor through mid-December while DOL decides whether to rescind the rule.

A ruling this Spring made by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals left intact Texas’ stay of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Regional Haze Rule.

CONGRATS TO DECEMBER AMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH! Why did you choose to become an ambassador for the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce? M wife, Vicki, and I returned to Lubbock after living in New Mexico for 15 years. We felt the best way to be reconnected with the business community would be to join the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. Christye Weld encouraged us to become Ambassadors which enabled us to get really involved in the heart of what is going on in the business community.

How long have you been an Ambassador? In March, I will complete two years as an Ambassador.

Have you ever won this award before? Nope, never.

As an ambassador, what are some of your favorite events to attend? In addition to attending ribbon cuttings/groundbreakings, I’ve enjoyed attending the special events like: Business Expo, Community Prayer Luncheon, Chamber University, Hub City BBQ Cook-off and the Business Mercado.

What do you feel is the most rewarding part of being an ambassador? Being part of the teams and committees that support the Chamber is the most rewarding part of being an ambassador, we also love attending the events.

How long have you been with your current company? Just over two amazing years! I established Salted Oats in 2015, but I've been consulting since 1999.

Which Lubbock Chamber of Commerce event is your favorite? My favorite event is the Community Prayer Luncheon because it gathers such a large group of local business leaders to do something that affects our entire community for good.

Are you involved in any new activities/events with the Chamber? I’ll be taking a leadership role in Business Expo this year and will continue on several other Chamber Committees I’ve been privileged to be a part of since joining.

Outside of the Chamber, what are you involved with? My wife, Vicki, and I started monthly leadership luncheons called TW3.
