overview

In this project for Kate Lester Interiors, located in Manhattan Beach, I served as the project lead. This project was primarily focused on furnishing an existing condo with the addition of lighting, wallpaper and paint. I worked on this project from the beiginning and was invovled in the selection process of all funtiure, lighting, wallpaper and accessories. I created all the drawings including floor plans and elevations. I also created custom furniture drawings for two sofas, the coffee and dining table, as well as the two beds. I oversaw all aspects of ordering, vendor relations and contractor management to get this project from idea to completion.

CHAIN FORGE FOOD HALL

105 13TH ST BOSTON, MA

overview

For the thesis project the task was to develop a program with the goal of a positive social impact, select a site for the proposed program and develop it into a comprehensive project. This took place over three terms, each with a different goal in mind. The first term was focused on developing a program based on the chosen issue/goal and gathering data both on the issue itself and potential user surveys. The site was also selected in the first term and existing drawings were compiled. The next two terms were focused on developing the program within the chosen building.

concept statement

Concept Statement: Create a food hall that informs users of the impact food has on the environment through classes and demonstrations, as well as promoting locally sourced ingredients through local markets and restaurants.

guiding principles

Transparency within food service

Create spaces that foster the awareness of where food comes from through learning and transparency.

Central garden gathering

Create central spaces that connect individuals though nature.

Functional park within

Create functional parks that are restorative spaces while also acting as a means of food production.

Pockets of Discovery

Pockets of discovery allow users to stumble upon new spaces through a winding circulation path.

Site Selection

The site for the proposed food hall is Building 105, also known as “The Chain Forge”, located in the historic Charlestown Navy Yard in Charlestown, MA, two miles outside of Boston. The building is compelling due to its historic character and abundance of open space. Today the Charlestown Navy Yard houses the USS Constitution Museum as well as two ships that tourists can experience. Most of the buildings are now apartments or business headquarters and there is a growing desire to develop the space further. Adding a food hall to this area would make the surrounding area a social hub and a place where residents and tourists can appreciate Boston’s history and gather as a community.

HERB GARDEN PLAN

The herb garden has a combination of small functional herbs used for the test/demo kitchen as well as larger foliage plants. The garden is separated in the middle by a 3 foot wide path that allows access for harvesting and watering.

The planter beds are 2 feet off the ground which allows the outer rim of the garden to be made into integrated bench seating.

Marley’s Monsters

Marley’s Monsters is an eco-shop local to the Eugene/Springfield area that sells alternatives to single use products.. In this studio we were tasked with creating a retail space for the brand that showcased their products and had adequate storage. We worked with an existing building and created a set of working drawings on Revit to showcase and detail our design.

I focused my design on creating a functional space for the brand that let their products shine while still incorporating fun patterns and colors. I learned a lot from this studio and it was challenging, but rewarding to create a full set of drawings and details that were placed on sheets at the end.

Longitudinal Connection

The Weissenhof Estate, Stuttgart, Germany

One major issue I faced was creating a space that was accessible while keeping the structure of the building as close to the original as possible. The fact that this project is located in Germany I focused on accessibility standards in that country and worked in metrics for the entirety of the studio which was also a challenge. Site Plan

The site I worked with for this project was The Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart, Germany. For this project we were asked to use Mies Van Der Rohe’s building and turn it into a senior living facility. I focused on connection and modularity. Each unit consists of custom modular furniture that allows for access regardless of ability.

Creekside Community High School

The Creekside Community High School project focused on creating a library/student run cafe space in the historic Durham School building. Creekside Community High School is an alternative high school that focuses on unique ownership style teaching, Preparing students for real world experiences.

The guiding principles for my design focus on celebrating the historical geometry and showcasing what is existing. Celebrating existing and historical aspects of the space allow for community members of all ages to feel a sense of ownership and belonging Creating a space that fosters community involvement through shared history and showcased student art allows for intertwined growth. Not only does highlighting existing features create a welcoming space for everyone but it also creates an impact in terms of sustainability and cost.
