Kim Sa-ryang(1914 – 1950)’s real name is Shi-chang and he was born in 1914 in Pyeongyang, South Pyeongan Province. Kim’s literary activities started after his enrollment at Tokyo National University when he was studying German literature. In 1936, he published his first piece, “Toseongnang” which was written in Japanese in the literary coterie magazine The River Bank (Jaebang). Upon his return to Korea after graduation, the publication of his short story “Into the Light” (Bitsokae) (1939) brought him wide recognition for his creative talent.
