Dyson

Dyson is a multinational technology company based in Singapore and Great Britian. James Dyson founded the company in 1991 and now has over 14,000 employees. They produce hair tools, vacuum cleaners, air-purifiers, hand-dryers, and more. Dyson’s mission is to solve problems that others ignore. Their vision is to produce cost-effective, sustainable, and integrated products.

James Dyson describes his products as sleek, efficient, and high-quality. When designing this space, including space planning and choosing materials, I drew inspiration from these three terms.

This 8,000 square-foot workplace is located within a pre-existing building in downtown Roanoke, VA. It is surrounded by cafes, shops, and local art galleries.

One of the main design issues I addressed is the limited access to natural light throughout the building. I solved this issue by creating a mezzanine, placing the flex workspaces underneath the skylights, and strategically building rooms next to the windows on the second floor. The location of the salon was also an issue, so I created a kitchenette in between the work cafe and salon, so that customers can access it from either side to grab a drink or snack.

The Bar

is a dry bar salon within the office for employees and locals. The bar offers many different services using the Dyson supersonic, airwrap, and airstraight. The space is also used for classes held once a month to teach and inform others on how to use the hair products.

The main color of the Dyson brand is black, therefore there is a hierarchy of black throughout my space. However, I used pops of color from Dyson’s product color palette to brighten the office. I used marble to define Dyson’s brand as high-quality and luxury because marble is long-lasting and valued for its beauty.

My structure is located in the forest of the Philippines, Asia, and close to the ocean. Oak and Rattan are the main materials used in this project and both are native to the Philippines. The main source of lighting is natural light, but there are also LED lights within the rattan forms.

Mind Melt

Spring 2024 | 2 weeks | Group

Revit, Enscape, and Photoshop

Mind Melt offers a contrast therapy experience inclusive for all enrolled college students. Located in the campus gym, our sauna/cold plunge space promotes relaxation, as well as mental and physical health enhancement. Through temperature variations, students can benefit from improved circulation, muscle recovery, and stress reduction. The exposure to different temperatures triggers the release of proteins, hormones, and white blood cells, boosting energy, reducing inflammation, and improving immune function Adapting to temperature extremes fosters breathing techniques and resilience to stress. Mind Melt empowers students to navigate academic challenges while still prioritizing mental health and wellness.

Located in a pre-existing gym on campus which includes locker rooms, showers, and bathrooms, this central spot is located near a garden, health center, and counseling center.

For this assignment, I started by collaborating to create the concept and initial diagrams. My additional responsibilties included designing the structure and generating floorplans, sections, axons, and perspectives.

Materiality

the materials for the sauna were chosen specifically because of their resistance to heat and moisture. Cedar wood is commonly used in saunas because it is naturally resistant to decay and has a pleasent smell. Also, the stone is useful for retaining heat within the room. The lyocell fabric is super soft and comfortable, durable, and resistant to moisture.
