Playwright Robert Harling’s poignant, sassy, and quick-witted play made its 2005 Broadway debut after the successful 1989 film version. Premiering in 1957, West Side Story is one of theater’s most loved musicals. Combining the genius of Laurents, Bernstein, Sondheim and Robbins, material doesn’t get better. One of the first “concept” musicals, West Side Story opens without an overture and integrates the story, music, dance, and design so tightly that they can’t be unwound. The movement, some of which is iconic, intertwines fighting with acrobatic touches, and rumba with ballet. The score is immediately recognizable from just a few chords, yet is complex and mysterious. The story, borrowing from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, contrasts the beauty of young people falling in love against a backdrop of hatred and violence.
West Side Story is a show people see over and over. Working on it highlighted for me the intense collaboration that its creators used. With sincere gratitude, I thank Francine and Stefan for their talent and hard work; the producers, stage managers and crew for their unrecognized hours and commitment; and the designers for creating and sometimes re-creating. I will always be grateful to LTA for giving us the opportunity to stage West Side Story. Most of all, I thank this wonderful cast for bringing it to life.
Susan DevineWest Side Story is widely regarded as one of Broadway’s greatest musicals. Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, the story takes place on the streets of New York City controlled by opposing gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Two teens from the warring gangs meet and fall in love, heightening the tension between the groups. Can the lovers survive when hate and ignorance are unwilling to yield? West Side Story is both a tribute to its creators’ magic and a no-holds-barred reflection of social problems, marking a turning point in American theater.

Dwayne Allen (A-Rab) is thrilled to make his LTA debut. He is currently studying music and theater at George Mason University. When not on the stage, Dwayne can be found on the river as a pirate on the harbor with Urban Pirates. Other recent credits include Love, Sex and the IRS (Wolf Pack Theatre Company) and Sunset Boulevard (RCP) and singing with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington.
Morgan Arrivillaga (Teresita) is proud to make her LTA debut. She attends James Madison University and has also studied with Broadway Theatre Project. Acting credits include Belle in Beauty and the Beast (Mill Mountain Theatre), Elle Woods in Legally Blonde and the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods (both at Blacksburg High School).
Sean Cator (Snowboy) is thrilled to be making his LTA debut. Previous credits include A Chorus Line, 9 to 5, The Wedding Singer, Nice Work If You Can Get It and 42nd Street (TAP)and Xanadu, Shrek and Sunset Boulevard (RCP). Sean is a graduate of the Ithaca College School of Music and teaches elementary general music in Fairfax County. Chris Chapin (Juano) is excited to be making his LTA debut! Chris has worked with Statesmen Theatre (George C. Marshall High School), Vienna Youth Players, Vienna Players and Elden Street Players. He recently graduated from George C. Marshall High School and will be attending Christopher Newport University in the fall of 2016. Cassie Cope (Anybodys) is honored to be back at LTA, where she recently played Jacqueline Bouvier in Grey Gardens. Cassie is a rising junior at Edison High School and hones her triple-threat skills as a member of the preprofessional training company of Adventure Theatre-MTC. Cassie is grateful to Susan for casting her and to voice coaches Erin Gardiner and Linda Wells. She dedicates this performance to her musical theater-loving grandparents, John and Roberta Cope.

Page Dreher (Glad Hand, Officer Krupke) is making his LTA debut in West Side Story. He occasionally performs with Washington National Opera and Wolf Trap Opera. Operatic favorites are Turandot, La Bohème and Street Scene. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA since 1997 whose film credits include Limitless, Argo and the forthcoming Jackie. TV credits: Homicide: Life on the Street, Hawaii Five-O and House of Cards.
Allison S. Finkelstein (Karina) is thrilled to return to the stage after earning her Ph.D. in U.S. history from the University of Maryland in 2015. She majored in theater at the College of William & Mary, where she performed in Pal Joey and Gypsy and with Sinfonicron Light Opera Company in Ragtime, The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance.
Chris Galindo (Bernardo) is ecstatic to reprise his role as Bernardo ... this time for LTA! Chris has worked at several professional theaters in the area, including the Kennedy Center, Studio Theatre, Washington Shakespeare Company and Imagination Stage, and he has been a company member for Synetic Theater (2008). He won the Helen Hayes Award twice with Synetic Theater for A Midsummer Night’s Dream and King Lear. He is excited to be reunited with Tahara, Matt and Stefan from TheRocky Horror Show (LTA) and Caroline, Susan, Sean and Stefan from A Chorus Line (TAP).
Caitlyn Goerner (Minnie) is thrilled to be back on the LTA stage after 11 years! Here’s what she has been up to since. Television: NBC’s The Sing Off Regional theater: The Forestburgh Playhouse, Virginia Musical Theater, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. A few favorite roles: Polly Baker in Crazy for You, Helene in Sweet Charity, Cassandra in Cats, Texas in Cabaret. Eternally grateful for her family and amazing husband, Christian, for supporting her NYC dreams and the new adventures to come here in D.C.!
Ari Halvorsen (Baby John) is thrilled to appear on the LTA stage. A dance student since the age of 1, he dances competitively in hip hop, lyrical, jazz, contemporary, ballet, animation and ballroom (including the samba, mambo, cha-cha, rumba, paso doble, jive and B-boy). Acting credits include Fiddler on the Roof and Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?,as well as Annie (CFTC).
Jeffrey Hollands (Diesel) is pleased to be making his LTA debut. Most recently, he appeared with TAP in its production of Nice Work If You Can Get It. Other favorite credits include featured roles in Legally Blonde, Gypsy, Peter Pan , Happy Days , Children of Eden , Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Oliver!, High School Musical and Bye Bye Birdie.
Jasmine Jones (Estela) is thrilled for her LTA debut as a Shark Girl in West Side Story.Fairly new to the musical theater scene, she was overjoyed to know the brilliant minds she would be working with as a part of this wonderful show. Previous roles she has held are Alice (Ensemble) in Nice Work If You Can Get It (TAP), the Ugly Duckling in Shrek the Musical (RCP) and Ladies’ Ensemble in Sunset Boulevard (RCP). She dedicates this run to her ever-supportive family –thank you, familia!
Patrick Kearney (Big Deal) is excited to be a Jet in the iconic musical West Side Story as his first (hopefully not last) LTA production. Patrick attends Falls Church High School, where he is in the chorus program. Credits include Nice Work If You Can Get It (TAP), Peter Pan (TAP), Into the Woods and The Sound of Music (Bel Cantanti). Many thanks to the whole cast for always making the rehearsals fun and memorable, and a special thanks to Susan, Stefan and Francine for this opportunity!
Matt Liptak (Glad Hand/Officer Krupke) was last seen onstage at LTA in In the Heights and in LTA’s production of The Rocky Horror Show as Riff Raff (LTA Award winner). Previous roles in the D.C. area include Patsy (WATCH nominee) in LTA’s Spamalot and Nicky-Trekkie Monster-Bad Idea Bear in LTA’s Avenue Q (WATCH nominee, LTA Award winner). Liptak once again thanks his friends, family and loved ones for all they have given him and all they continue to give.
Fred C. Lash (Doc) is very pleased to be appearing in his eighth production at LTA. From Hucklebee in The Fantasticks to Oscar Hubbard in The Little Foxes to Porter Milgrim in Deathtrap (performed one day after 9/11) to Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, Fred has again come home to the LTA stage. And, having appeared as Bernardo at Purdue in 1964, he is now back on the streets of New York, but with a little less hair!
Derek Marsh (Action) is delighted to be returning once again to the LTA stage in this amazing production of West Side Story. He has previously appeared in Spamalot, Ragtime and Hairspray (LTA); 1776 (MCP); and Man of La Mancha (ACCT). He has also made television appearances on Investigation Discovery’s Evil Kin, AMC’s Turn: Washington’s Spies and PBS’ Mercy Street.
Joe Mayes (Riff) is thrilled to be in West Side Story and performing for the first time with LTA. He is a performance major in the theater department of Virginia Commonwealth University’s arts school. His most recent and notable past theater credits include Damn Yankees, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Dead Man’s Cell Phone and a movement-based show called Medea Myth. His thanks go out to the amazing cast and crew and, of course, all who support his love of performing.
Lexie McEntire (Maria) is thrilled to be playing her dream role in her first LTA show. Favorite past roles include Ilse in Spring Awakening (LBT), Judy in White Christmas, Cinderella in Into the Woods and Dance Captain/ Yolanda in In the Heights (STC). Lexie is a sophomore musical theater major at Belmont University in Nashville. She will be playing Essie in its production of Parade this fall. Thanks to Mom, Dad, Savannah, Laurie Nelson, Jo Lynn Burks and Repo!
Miryam Mendelson (Graziella) is thrilled to be performing in her second show with LTA! Previous credits include Fagin’s Gang in Oliver! (LTA), Irene in Radium Girls, Esther in Meet Me in St. Louis, Pilar in Legally Blonde, and Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She will be attending Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts majoring in musical theater with a dance emphasis in the fall.
Ben Peter (Tony) has been most recently seen in LTA’s History Boys as Scripps. Ben attends George Mason University. Other past roles include Peter Pan in Peter Pan: The Boy Who Hated Mothers and Fermen/Eusebio in Boleros for the Disenchanted (Mason Players), St. Jimmy in American Idiot (LBT), Doug in Gruesome Playground Injuries (Flying Muskrat Theatre Company), Sonny Malone in Xanadu and Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby (South Lakes Players).
Tahara Robinson (Anita) is returning to LTA after playing Daniela in In the Heights. Recent roles include Chiffon in Little Shop of Horrors and Indian inPeter Pan (TAP) and Phantom in The Rocky Horror Show (LTA). She has performed in other stage plays in the Alexandria area and in Europe. Tahara studied dance at Old Dominion University. She was a featured dancer for the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Awards and a lead dancer in hip-hop videos. Tahara has modeled for urban fashion lines and was featured in The Complex and The Source magazines.
Patricia Rupinen (Velma) is ecstatic to be back on stage after a six-year hiatus! Her favorite roles include the Witch in Into the Woods (Thomas Jefferson High School) and Mayzie La Bird in Seussical (Saint Bernadette’s Summer Theater Program). She has also served as a director, choreographer and overall tech lead as well as heading makeup, props and costume design for college and high school theater productions.
Jacqueline Salvador (Consuelo) is so happy to be back at LTA this summer in the classic West Side Story. Some of her previous roles include Carla in the 2016 WATCH Award-winning Outstanding Musical In the Heights (LTA), a Museum Artist in Seasons of Light (DT), Zita in Gianni Schicchi and Emma Jones in Street Scene (GMUO). She is so thankful to her familia and friends for their constant support! Also to her brother Oscar for tolerating another show with her! ¡WEPA!
Oscar Salvador Jr. (Indio) is happy to be a part of an incredible group of talented people. His last show at LTA was In the Heights, playing the role of Jose. Previous roles include Noah/Zachary in Saudade (DC Fringe), Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit (RC), Boyfriend in Monsters Calling Home and Milky in Caleta Beach (GMU’s Mason Players). Elizabeth Spilsbury (Pauline) is excited to be making her LTA debut in West Side Story. Most recently, she played Maggie Anderson in Brigadoon (Compass Rose Theater). Other past roles include Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls and Mrs. Hale in Trifles. Elizabeth is a recent graduate of Muhlenberg College with a B.A. in dance and theater. She is also a choreographer and recently worked on productions of Kismet and The Roar of the Greasepaint.
Matt Stover (Chino) is thrilled to be reunited with past cast mates who are unofficially a part of his family, “Oye Que Paso?!” Matt credits his passion for the arts to his loving and supportive parents, Carole and Del Stover. Patricia “Pep” Targete (Margarita/Dance Captain) is excited to be back on the LTA stage after appearing in last summer’s In the Heights. She is a two-time Helen Hayes nominee and was recently seen in American Idiot (KT). She is a performer/choreographer/dance teacher in the D.C. area and has worked for Adventure Theatre, Imagination Stage, Toby’s Dinner Theatre and the Kennedy Center, to name a few places. Mike Turner (Lieutenant Schrank) is pleased to have the opportunity to work with Susan Devine a second time. In 2012, Mike played Charles in Susan’s production of the Pulitzer Prize finalist play The Clean House (ESP). Also in 2012, Mike played Charles in an original D.C. Fringe Festival production of Shock Trauma.
Brook Urquhart (Toro/Dance Captain) is pleased to make his debut at LTA. At Toby’s Dinner Theatre, Brook appeared in Cats (Mistoffelees) and in the ensemble in Peter Pan and Ragtime. He has performed as a dancer and aerialist with Celebrity Cruises. Brook is a DMA certified ballet/jazz teacher, and he specializes in trapeze artistry and silks.

Elizabeth Jane Addington (Assistant Stage Manager) is a rising junior at James Madison University and is stoked to ASM her fifth production at LTA. Favorite shows include The Aliens (JMU), Assassins (JMU), Spamalot (LTA), Dogfight (JMU) and 33 Variations (LTA). Rebecca Balough (Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be back for her fourth show at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. She’s done backstage work on A Christmas Carol, Grey Gardens and To Kill a Mockingbird at LTA and The Miracle Worker, Little Women and Cheaper by the Dozen at ACCT as an assistant stage manager and sound technician. Thanks to all the stage managers, cast and crew who have welcomed her back despite her sarcastic jokes.
Marzanne Claiborne (Co-Master Electrician) is delighted to be working on West Side Story and to be working with Franklin Coleman and Pam Leonowich once again. The first time this team worked together was on Spamalot, with Franklin designing and Pam and Marzanne as master electricians. This season, Marzanne designed the lights for The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife and To Kill a Mockingbird (LTA) and The Miracle Worker and Dixie Swim Club (ACCT).
Franklin Coleman (Lighting Design) is happy to be back working with Susan, Lynn and Kevin again. The previous time was for Proof at LTA, for which he received the Patty Dillaber Mickley Award. Recent designs include Spamalot at LTA and Shrek at RCP. He has won other Mickley Awards for Strange Bedfellows, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Sisters Rosensweig and Noises Off (1997); and WATCH Awards for his designs for Side Man (ESP), Copenhagen (ESP), Beauty and the Beast (RCP) and Hairspray (LTA). Currently, his spare time is mostly spent moving into his new house.
Rob Cork (Assistant Producer) has stage managed many productions and education class showcases at LTA, beginning with The Sorcerer in 1996. He also directed the The Soul Sitter and A Christmas Carol at LTA. Favorite roles include Jungle Cruise Skipper at Walt Disney World, Charlie Davenport in Annie Get Your Gun (SCT), and Melbrook the Jester in Rumpelstiltskin with Bergen County Players. He currently appears as Will Rogers in a traveling production of Will Rogers’ U.S.A. with Kaleidoscope Theatre Company, a nonprofit organization that he co-founded in 2002.
David Correia (Sound Design) is happy to work with Susan Devine again for West Side Story. Last summer, David did sound for LTA’s production of In the Heights and earlier for Spamalot (2014 WATCH nomination for sound design in a musical). Other recent sound designs include Fool for Love and Blues for an Alabama Sky (PCP), The Miracle Worker, Cheaper by the Dozen and Pride and Prejudice (ACCT) and LTA’s production of Proof (2014 WATCH nomination for sound design in a play).
Susan Devine (Director) directed Chicago (WATCH, LTA, Ruby Griffith Awards) and Proof (WATCH nomination) previously at LTA. Other credits include A Chorus Line (TAP, WATCH nomination), Flora the Red Menace (1st Stage), The Clean House (ESP), Some Girl(s), I Never Sang for My Father (PPF) and The Fantasticks (VTC). Austin Fodrie (Co-Stage Manager) is currently working at Burgundy Farm Country Day School as a technology support and integration specialist. He has volunteered at LTA, Port City Playhouse, ACCT and TAP. His most recent productions include co-stage manager for Grey Gardens at LTA and assistant stage manager for Nice Work If You Can Get It at TAP. He is thankful to be working alongside Joan, Susan and the rest of the cast and crew of West Side Story.
Donna Hauprich (Co-Wardrobe) is excited to be working with the dynamic wardrobe duo of Mary Beth and Margaret, pushing up our sleeves and readying the washer and iron for the wardrobe needs of the talented cast of West Side Story. Donna by day is a massage therapist in Alexandria, and when not enjoying time at LTA she plays tuba with the City of Fairfax Band.
Bobbie Herbst (Co-Set Decoration) is always delighted to be working with the talented and innovative Russ Wyland. Thank you to the artistic directors, producers, stage managers, production designers, actors, musicians and production crew of West Side Story. A humble recipient of LTA’s Most Outstanding New Member Award and Outstanding Service to LTA Award, she has always been in awe of the creative aspects of the production process. Francine Krasowska (Music Director) has played, sung, coached, acted, directed and arranged music for productions and ensembles on the east coast and in Ohio, from schools and churches to experimental and professional theaters; from touring ensembles to TV and radio broadcasts; from medieval polyphony to electronica. She has worked with GAC, KAT, MCP, RCP, TAP, VLOC, VTC and a hundred or so D.C. performing groups. She is happy to be back at LTA, where she music directed Ragtime and [title of show].
Joan A.S. Lada (Stage Manager) is happy to return to LTA. Grant Kevin Lane (Co-Costume Design) A 20-year member of LTA, Kevin has designed sets and/or costumes for over 70 shows in the D.C. area. Absolutely thrilled to be doing this project with the talented Kit and Jean!
Pam Leonowich (Co-Master Electrician) has been climbing the light ladders at LTA for over 10 years and is proud to follow in her mother’s theater footsteps. Her mother managed and designed productions for the troops during World War II with the British Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). She is happy to team up again with light designer Franklin and co-master electrician Marzanne for another musical.
Lynn O’Connell (Co-Producer) wishes to thank the many people who generously gave of their time, creativity and energy to make our West Side Story magic.
Kevin O’Dowd (Co-Producer, Set Painting) is very pleased to once again be working with Susan and Lynn and adding Eddie to the mix. Kevin has produced many plays at LTA, most recently Proof. Kevin has won many LTA Awards for his set painting and WATCH Awards for painting Proof and Hairspray. Thanks to the cast and crew for all their hard work.

Brendan Quinn (Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be backstage at LTA once again after ASMing A Christmas Carol and assistant directing Laughing Stock last year. In front of the curtain, you may have seen him as Jonathan in Snakebit (DS), John Brooke in Little Women (ACCT) or Jesus in The Odd Couple: Female Version here at LTA.

Leslie Reed (Co-Properties) was enchanted by LTA’s warmth and creative genius the first time she was asked to help with the props of Blithe Spirit. A magical door had opened to reveal the world of make believe fabricated from hard work, imagination, superb talent, and a superabundance of cooperation and creativity. Gathering props, painting sets, calling volunteers, researching details, cleaning, sweeping, sewing, are all building blocks of a production. Being able to do it in the LTA community is truly a gift.
Dan Remmers (Set Design, Set Construction) is pleased to be working with Susan again on such a classic show. His previous designs at LTA include Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, Proof and TheRocky Horror Show. Thanks to Margie and the kids for their support.
Jean Schlichting and Kit Sibley (Co-Costume Design) generally work as a team and have costumed many shows at LTA and other local theaters. They are very pleased to team up with Kevin Lane for this iconic musical. Mary Beth Smith-Toomey (Co-Wardrobe) is pleased to be working with Susan, Lynn, Kevin, and Eddie again. She was the co-stage manager for the highly successful Proof with the same team sans Eddie. Usually found as a producer, she most recently produced LTA's The History Boys and the 2015 WATCH Outstanding Musical In The Heights. Mary Beth also served as the Wardrobe Mistress for such shows as Avenue Q, Hairspray, and Grey Gardens. She will be co-producing Anything Goes later this season. Margaret Snow (Co-Wardrobe) is very pleased to join Mary Beth, Donna, cast and crew to work wardrobe for West Side Story. Having been energized by Sweeney Todd, she is particularly fond of musicals with bloody challenges and someday would like to operate on the, “Out, damn’d spot! Out, I say!”
Adrian Steel (Assistant Stage Manager), a lawyer during the day, has worked backstage on numerous LTA productions, including Gypsy, Noises Off, Heaven Can Wait, A Christmas Carol, Chicago, Hairspray, The Full Monty and Spamalot, among others. He has also worked recently backstage at MCP, TAP (on the team –as Tinker Bell –that won a 2015 WATCH Award for special effects), RMT and VTC. He expresses his appreciation to the cast and crew, who have been wonderful to work with.
Maurissa Weiner (Hair and Makeup Design) is thrilled to be making her LTA debut. In addition to owning Designs by Maurissa Makeup Artistry, a freelance makeup business, her past productions include: Mary Poppins (designer for RCP); Cats (designer for Fairfax Theater Academy); Legacy of Light and Chicago (designer for Theater CNU); The Coronation of Poppea (designer for Opera CNU); Mary Stuart, When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder, Brighton Beach Memoirs and Steel Pier (assistant designer for Theater CNU).
Casey Wilson (Assistant Stage Manager) is a junior at H.B. Woodlawn Secondary Program in Arlington, Virginia. She has assistant stage managed three shows at LTA: Spamalot (2013), Rocky Horror (2014) and To Kill a Mockingbird (2016). She directs and acts in her school’s theater program.
Russell Wyland (Co-Set Decoration, Rigging) has been a member of LTA for 25 years and has served the theater in many capacities, including chairman of the Sound Department, head of the Selection Committee, and three years as president. Russ has served seven years as the governor for production. Russ has received myriad awards throughout the years.

Virginia played many shows at LTA beginning in the 1990s, including 1776, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Amadeus, Into the Woods, Oliver, The Secret Garden, and Sweeney Todd. She was a mentor and teacher and encouraged many a young musician playing alongside her in LTA, KAT, MCP, MTA, RCP, TAP, and other theaters in the greater DC area.
She will be sadly missed.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
