It’s Halloween and six people have come to play a murdermystery game hosted by writer Charles Prince at a rustic island cottage in Italy. This play is a fast-paced farce, so what could go wrong? As the characters embark on a weekend of fun, ghosts from the past begin to haunt the proceedings and it becomes clear that they are both playing for laughs and their lives. LTA audiences are treated to rising tensions, secret passageways, incriminating letters, unexpected corpses, and a 25-year-old unsolved mystery that will propel the audience to… well, we don’t want to give away the unexpected and terrifying conclusion. This is a whodunit farce you don’t want to miss!

Director’s Notes

Well, what better place to start over after so many years of being gone than at the top? Little Theatre of Alexandria is known for its quality, its respect of the art and its dedication to its audience and members. I reached out to them immediately after finding out we were returning to Virginia and threw my hat in the ring, hoping to get in the door. And they opened it wide for me, handed me a jewel of a script, dedicated producers, talented designers and a beautiful stage. The organization and care that LTA has shown me have been no less than terrific. Put that with a stellar cast and stage management duo, and we have a show. Robert Harling wrote an intelligent, insightful script about the death of his sister and how his family, mostly his mother, dealt with the tragedy. He wrote about Southern women and their friendships without making cartoon characters out of them, as we often see in Southern comedies. We don’t have many good scripts for women in theater; Steel Magnolias is at the top. It’s been a pleasure working and guiding all of these ladies and the production team to the stage, and now I get to hand them all over to you ... the audience. Thank you to Brooke, Jay, Dick, Lynn, Larry, Matt, Marzanne, Ceci, Rebecca, Larissa and Brendan ... and, as always, the one person who has made this all possible ... to my Gal Sal.

M’Lynn is the mother of bride-to-be Shelby Eatenton, and as friend Truvy Jones fixes the women’s hair for the ceremony, they welcome a helping hand from aspiring beautician Annelle Dupuy Desoto. Diabetic Shelby has a health scare, which is averted but doesn’t bode well for her hopes of having children. Time passes, and the women and their friends encounter tragedy and good fortune, growing stronger and closer in the process.

Meet the Crew

(in alphabetical order)

Ceci Albert (Costume Design) is excited to be back at LTA, where she and Lisa Brownsword costumed The Odd Couple (Female Version) last year. Lisa is helping out again and lending a sense of style to the production, and Annie Vroom is invaluable in explaining the mysteries of the LTA costume closet. Ceci (with help from Lisa) has costumed productions at TACT, LTA, DS, MCP, PCP (their “home” theater), and St. Mark’s Players and most recently worked on Dixie Swim Club (ACCT) and Radio Golf (HBP). Thank you to the cast and crew of Steel Magnolias for a wonderful experience in exploring the strength that women bring to each other’s lives.

Kirstin Apker (Set Decoration) is grateful to Brooke and Jay for giving her the opportunity to explore another realm of the tech universe. This adds to her LTA “firsts,” including painting the famous tree mural for Heaven Can Wait, assistant stage managing (while pregnant) for Sweeney Todd and decorating a ghoulish cantaloupe as co-propsdesigner for Laughing Stock. Kirstin dedicates this show to the many strong and beautiful women, especially her mom, Judy, and her sister Macaira, who have served as her own “steel magnolias.”

Brooke Angel (Co-Producer) is excited to make her producing debut! She is no stranger to theater, as she has been involved in over 35 theatrical productions in the Northern Virginia area. Highlights include her work on Fool for Love (PCP), Tale of the Allergist’s Wife (LTA) and Poltergeist (FCT—NVTA Best Actress nominee). Brooke would like to thank her amazing director, production crew (especially the photographer … who just happens to be her talented stepmother) and the cast of ladies who are too talented for words. Special thanks to her grandparents for introducing her to Steel Magnolias, the parentals for their constant support and advice, and Scott for his unwavering outpouring of love and patience.

Marzanne Claiborne (Lighting Designer) is delighted to be designing lights for Steel Magnolias. Previous designs include Dirty Blonde, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife and To Kill a Mockingbird (LTA) and The Miracle Worker and Dixie Swim Club (ACCT).

Jay A. Cohen (Co-Producer) is grateful to be producing this production of Steel Magnolias and grateful for the opportunity to work with all the wonderful talent on this production. Jay has been producing plays for over 10 years, recently producing such shows as The Rocky Horror Show, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife and The 39 Steps. Jay has worked both onstage and backstage since the tender age of 3. Although in that show he was dragged, kicking and screaming, the whole time, he must have enjoyed it since he is still at it.

Meet the Crew

John Downing (Co-Set Construction) has designed over 40 shows at LTA. Among his favorites are Proposals, The Teahouse of the August Moon, Boeing Boeing, Sherlock’s Last Case, Art and the very first, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. He has received WATCH Awards for Twentieth Century, Heaven Can Wait (set construction) and Richard III (TAP, in the very first year of WATCH, 2000). John works as a flight dynamics engineer at NASA, and in his spare time he enjoys APBA baseball, Euro-gaming, model battleships, Doctor Who, airplane-free traveling and, of course, theater!

Rebecca Harris (Hair/Wig Design) is thrilled to be invited as wig designer for LTA’s production of Steel Magnolias. A Cleveland native with theater in her blood, she grew up going to shows in the city’s downtown theater district. She majored in technical theater studies in college and knew this would end up being a lifelong passion. This is her second production with this great and well-respected company. Her previous hair design credits include American Trailer Park Musical (DS) and Dirty Blonde (LTA). Thank you to Russ Wyland for thinking of her and inviting her back to take part in this wonderful show. She would also like to thank the whole production staff for their hard work and hopes everyone enjoys the show.

James Hotsko, Jr. (Co-Set Construction) is excited to be back at LTA and looking forward to getting his hands dirty behind the scenes. Kudos to Matt for a wonderfully designed set to help ease him back into power tools, splinters, and under-breath swearing. Hats off to the production team and cast on a wonderful show. As always, thanks to family and friends for their continuous support of his theatrical adventures.

Micheal J. O’Connor (Co-Master Electrician) works as master electrician at many local community theaters, most recently on The History Boys and A Christmas Carol for LTA and Mary Poppins for RCP. He was co-ME for To Kill a Mockingbird with Pam Leonowich, a favorite partner. He can often be found backstage or in the tech booth, always in the dark.

Larry Grey (Co-Stage Manager) is grateful for this opportunity to be co-SM of LTA’s production of Steel Magnolias. He was recently seen as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol (LTA) and as Craig Colin in LTA’s Laughing Stock and will be seen in a brief appearance in the soon-to-be-released feature film On the Wing. Behind the scenes, Larry has performed as co-producer, Boys in the Band (DS); stage manager, Bug (DS); co-stage manager, Drawer Boy (PCP); and assistant stage manager on numerous shows. He is grateful to work in tandem with the fabulous Lynn Lacey and would like to thank all the people he loves who put up with his crazy schedule and love him even though they never get to see him.

Lynn Lacey (Sound Designer and Co-Stage Manager) has been involved in local theater for 20 years as a stage manager, sound designer and director (okay, once.) Some favorites include Kindertransport (CRT), Sweeney Todd and To Kill a Mockingbird (both LTA). Lynn thanks Marzanne for this one and is thrilled to be working with Sharon and this fabulous cast of talented ladies. Love and thanks to her family and friends, especially her “girls” and, as always, to her ever-present angel, Jennifer, for the courage to “dance.”

Matt Liptak (Set Design, Announcer) has been seen acting on the LTA stage since 2013, appearing in Avenue Q, Spamalot, The Rocky Horror Show, In the Heights and West Side Story. LTA’s The History Boys marked Liptak’s debut as a set designer in the DMV area. Liptak has previously designed sets in Ohio and upstate New York. Memorable set designs include Les Miserables, Much Ado About Nothing, Honk and Grease. Matt is thankful to Sharon, Jay, Brooke and LTA for giving him this opportunity.

Deidre “De” Nicholson-Lamb (Set Painting) most recently painted The Miracle Worker for ACCT and Grey Gardens and TheRocky Horror Show (Pearl Award for Excellence in Set Painting) for LTA. Previously, De painted four of the six stage sets in LTA’s 2006 season: Into the Woods (Pearl Award); Auntie Mame; Saturday, Sunday, Monday; and Footloose. In 2009, she won the Pearl Award for Picnic and was a WATCH nominee. De thanks LTA for the fun we had with this show and looks forward to her next adventure.

Larissa Norris (Makeup Design) has been nominated for four WATCH awards for her makeup design or hair design in local shows. She received makeup nominations for Dreamgirls (DS) and 9 to 5 (TAP) and for her bloody special effects makeup for Bug (DS), and hair nominations for the retro styling for A Streetcar Named Desire (LTA). Larissa is a makeup artist in the area. Check out Larissa Norris Makeup Artists on Facebook to see her work.

Brendan Quinn (Property Design) is excited to be taking on a new role at LTA after working as an assistant stage manager for West Side Story and A Christmas Carol and assistant director for Laughing Stock last year. In front of the curtain, you may have seen him as Jonathan in Snakebit (DS), John Brooke in Little Women (ACCT) or Jesus in The Odd Couple (Female Version) here at LTA.

Nicholas Roy (Co-Master Electrician) is pleased to be co-ME alongside Mr. O’Connor. This is the second show that he has worked on at LTA as an ME. The light crew has been an unmitigated pleasure to work with, and he hopes that, come graduation and getting a job in the winter, that it doesn’t take him too far away.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
