Dir ector ’s Notes

“The bible is so simple you have to have someone else help you misunderstand it.”

Harmon Okinyo

After reading t he play for t he first time, I was immediately struck by t he questions and contradictions t hat believers often struggle to reconcile to demonstrate devotion to t heir fait h. The playwright explores t hese contradictions t hrough t he eyes of four characters who, each in t heir own way, confront issues t hat challenge t heir individual beliefs and values and drive a central t hesis: Can one ever trust a book t hat was written by man to accurately reflect t he true word of God?

What at first appears to be a light hearted comedy about a religious debate evolves into deeper exploration of t he value of friendship, love and loss, divorce, celibacy, illness and end of life Through candid and often hilarious situations, t hese characters represent t he curiosity, skepticism, fear and hope t hat we all experience t hroughout various stages in our lives, and t he role t hat fait h plays (or not) in providing meaning and comfort

My hope is t hat t hose who watch t he play, regardless of t heir religious beliefs, will reflect on t heir own values and embrace t he mysteries of life as a common t hread t hat binds us all toget her.

SHOW SYNOPSIS

The subject is damnation, but The Savannah Disputation is as light a as t he iced tea served by t he odd-couple sisters in t heir proper Sou home. Yet t he sisters quickly lose t heir Sout hern charm when a you door-to -door evangelist comes knocking to save t heir souls. This t heological comedy wit h a twist blends t he sharpness of wit wit h a dept h of character while telling a story of a crisis of fait h
