Director’s Notes

Prelude to a Kiss was originally scheduled to be produced in LTA’s 202021 season. Long and globally significant story short, it wasn’t. The time I would have spent directing this show I spent quarantined and thinking about anything but Prelude to a Kiss. In fact, there were times when Peter, my husband and favorite set designer, was the only person who was thinking about Prelude at all. He sketched and dreamed and I didn’t and couldn’t. I felt frustrated and sad. I longed for the communal spaces that make theatre magical and so very important to me. The thought of Prelude reminded me how life would be different if something terrible wasn’t happening to us all.

LTA’s dedication to safety was reassuring. They pushed back the plays in that season instead of canceling them. But this meant that at some point I had to face the play. In LTA’s hands, Prelude would eventually get here, though production would begin after quite a long ... prelude. So I danced with it. The show existed in the periphery as a fantasy endpoint. I dreamed Prelude through Zoom trivia games, discord movie binges and Roll20 Dungeons and Dragons sessions. Prelude glimmered in my consciousness while I entered an online workforce, teaching and tutoring students whom I’ve never met. The play motivated me to get through the hard work and instability of the past several years. My refrain became, “When I’m working on Prelude ...” That dreamy quality became a direction.

The fantasy world of Prelude to a Kiss is exactly why it needs to be produced and performed in 2022. My mental images, as I cautiously dipped my toe into thinking more concretely about the show, were really an amalgamation of what I love about theatre. The way a production team builds a mood, intersected with the magical and changeable possibilities of this type of story. The theatre is a place where an apartment can become a bar, then transform into a city street, the street into an outdoor wedding. On the stage, an actor becomes a character, and a character can become ... whoever they need to be to find true love. The audience becomes confidants, co-conspirators and ultimately collaborators in a collective dream. This play holds all of these qualities and more.

2

Craig Lucas’ play is about transformation. About moving through difficulty into the reality of love. About facing life’s surprises with vulnerability and gentle acceptance and how acceptance of our vulnerabilities can transform us. It is about meeting people where they are, even if you might just miss them. It is also about the fact that the people we love sometimes get sick and will invariably die. Life will always get hard, and true love is the love that endures those hard times. True love holds tight through the storm and waits for the next dream. I learned a lot more about this in the last two years than I knew in 2020.

So here I am, feeling like it has been an eternity since I allowed myself to dream, and so grateful for the collaboration of my fellow dreamers. Thank you to the entire cast and crew for making the show I envisioned in 2020 become reality in 2022. There is a long distance between a director’s concepts and what ends up on the stage. The efforts, creativity, enthusiasm and insight of each and every one of you has made the show better than I could imagine. Thank you especially to Peter for the gorgeous set but more importantly for the love and support that made this romantic show possible. I understand this play not because of years of textual analysis but because of how much you continue to teach me about love.

No, the pandemic is not over; but theatre is about teamwork. If you’re in this auditorium right now, you’re vaccinated. You’ve collaborated with us. You’re part of the team. We hope you enjoy the show and dream a little with us, too.

Meet the Cast (in alphabetical order)

Brendan Chaney (Uncle Fred/Ensemble) is from Aberdeen, NC, and was a competitive speaker and debater at the national level in high school. In college, he had to find an outlet, and theatre seemed the natural place. By the end of his freshman year, he was on an acting scholarship. He tackled a diverse series of roles, from Uncle Peck in How I Learned to Drive to Robert in Proof. After college he took some time off until 2016, when he appeared in MCP’s Unnecessary Farce and more recently in Taking Sides (PCP) and The Fox on the Fairway and Wait Until Dark at LTA.

Deja Elliott (Aunt Dorothy/Ensemble) is thrilled to be working at LTA for the first time. Her previous acting credits include Stuart Little, The Cherry Orchard and You Can’t Take It with You. Deja would like to thank her family for their love and support, her castmates for being special and the director for this opportunity.

Smithchai Chutchainon (Peter) is excited to make his stage debut with LTA. He has appeared as Liam/Lawrence in Calendar Girls (PPF), Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol (Britches & Hose Shakespeare Theatre), Simon Mostyn in Murder on the Nile (Alpha Theater NY) and Ty in Good Kids (Theatre Prometheus). He has also worked with Flying Muskrats and The Highwood Theatre. He studied acting at George Mason University, and in his spare time he loves to break dance and perform spoken word poetry.

Brianna Goode (Rita) is excited for her first LTA production. She last appeared as Peto/Montjoy in Henry V at Brave Spirits Theatre. Some of her favorite roles include Lil’Bit in How I Learned to Drive (DS), Horatio in Hamlet (PCP), Casey Mulgraw in Anton in Show Business (SSS), Regen in Bachelorette (DS), Karen in Unnecessary Farce (MCP) and Ray in Fiveplay at The Coil Project.

Amber, who is originally from Southern California, currently lives in Alexandria with her husband, three children and toy poodle. She is a vegan foodie who enjoys traveling and finding new adventures.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a group of dedicated members who support financial projects for the theatre and provide numerous social events with dinners, receptions, and other member gatherings. The Council promotes and supports volunteerism throughout the theatre to ensure continued success in all areas, i.e., backstage, front of house, box office, etc.; we also provide need-based scholarship funding to support numerous adult and youth educational programs within the theatre. The Council is proud to sponsor the Shakespeare Garden which has become a community favorite with many stopping in just to relax and “waste my time in it.”
