Every year since Emancipation, the Nacirema Society of Montgomery, Alabama introduces six elegant African-American debutantes to a world of wealth, privilege and social responsibility. This year, at its 100th anniversary, with young love brewing, old flames simmering and national media attention on-hand what would dare to go awry? A sparkling romantic comedy with warmth and wit, Cleage invites you into this glamorous world where folks still dress for dinner and strong-willed grandmothers work behind the scenes. This is one invitation you’d be crazy to refuse!

The exciting drama of British history first cast its grip on my imagination when I was a child. My desire to discover women who forged their own chapters in history inspired me to read books on Empress Matilda, Eleanor of Aquitaine and, of course, Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. Directing Mary Stuart provided an irresistible opportunity for me to present this intriguing story of two queens, bound by blood yet separated by circumstance, for an American audience.
There was little precedent for female rule during the respective reigns of Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary was the first queen regnant (a queen ruling in her own right) of Scotland, and Elizabeth I was only the second in England. The fact that Mary and Elizabeth were distantly related and ruling separate kingdoms inevitably sparked comparisons between the two queens and prompted questions about a woman’s ability to rule.
While Elizabeth was generally regarded as cautious and cunning, Mary was considered romantic yet reckless. Elizabeth famously decided not to marry, exalting herself as “The Virgin Queen” to keep power and avoid diluting England’s political influence. Mary followed a more traditional path for both a queen and a woman of her time by marrying and giving birth to a son and heir. However, she made unwise decisions when forming marriage alliances, and those poor choices contributed to her downfall and eventual abdication. What Friedrich Schiller depicts, and what I’ve attempted to portray onstage, are two distinctly different queens whose diverging leadership styles and life choices affected the course of their own lives and the nations they ruled.
The biases against female leadership in Schiller’s Mary Stuart feel frighteningly modern. On more than one occasion in the play, Lord Burleigh insinuates a woman’s supposed emotional and irrational tendencies by describing Mary’s “judicious use of tears.” Even Talbot says, rather clumsily in front of Elizabeth, that “women are not strong.” Although the events depicted in Mary Stuart occurred over 400 years ago, this drama presents a fascinating backdrop for our own intolerance toward women in leadership roles today.
Kathleen Barth, DirectorSchiller’s dramatization of the final months of Mary Stuart’s life owes much to the historical record. Mary lived under the supervision of Sir Amias Paulet from 1585 until her death in February 1587. At this point in her life, Mary had not seen her native Scotland nor her son James for 18 years, and her execution by the English was, to many in Elizabeth’s privy council, a foregone conclusion in search of a reason.
Where Schiller departs from history, it’s to give a human face to political and historical forces. In the invention of Mortimer, he gives a face and a name to the dozens of young Catholic men galvanized to save the soul of their country, the woman they believed to be the true queen. Although Mary and Elizabeth never met in person, their confrontation here provides a chance for catharsis not only for the two queens but also for the audience watching these two women—and the ideologies they are made to represent—have a chance to speak face to face.
Every act of retelling history is fundamentally transformative, as the story takes on the timbre and unspoken feelings of the teller. Aristotle warns us that tragedy is not the story of people but of actions, and in straddling the line between history and theater, we risk losing the people at the center of the action. What we see in Schiller’s Mary Stuart is somehow more than the end of one woman’s life, and also exactly that. It is an intimate, entirely human look at the crashing waves of contemporary European politics, not always willingly embodied by these two women. Although we know their stories, Schiller does not allow us to forget that these women lived, that they felt the constant pressure of narratives being built around them already—flattening their choices into stories that are easier to tell, and losing track of the humanity at stake.
Griffin Voltmann, DramaturgOne queen will win; one must fall. This highly charged political drama is about two mighty royals—Mary Stuart and Queen Elizabeth I—and the power play between two of history’s greatest monarchs. With inspiring, powerful characters and a theme grounded in the struggle of religion, womanhood and statesmanship, this play mirrors and explores many of the same issues present today.

Sam Beeson (O’Kelly/Page) This is Sam’s first production with LTA. He graduated from Concordia University Irvine (CUI) in 2021 with a B.A. in performing arts and recently moved to DC to pursue acting for film and stage, as well as stand-up comedy. Other theatre credits include I and You (L.A. Theater Center), for which he received a national award for Distinguished Performance in a Play; What Are You Thinking? (Sylver Spoon Theater); She Stoops to Conquer (CUI); and All Shook Up (CUI).

Favorite roles include Sébastien in Nude with Violin (LTA), the Headmaster in The History Boys (ESP 2009/DS 2016) and the Genie of the Ring in Aladdin (BP). JBB has played most of the comic baritone roles in Gilbert and Sullivan, most recently King Gama in Princess Ida (VLOC). His last “Scottish” role was Mr. Lundie in Brigadoon (RMT 2019). Alba an-còmhnaidh air thoiseach—Scotland always First.

Selected favorite roles include Ginny in For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls (VTC), Lucy in Dracula, a staged reading (4615 Theater Company), White Rabbit and Caterpillar in ALICE (Dodgeball Theater) and Kate in Dancing at Lughnasa (William & Mary). Education: The College of William and Mary. Sarah thanks her husband, Gabriel, for his love and support.

Before the pandemic, she spent three years originating the role of Suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt in 19 the Musical. Other favorites include Oliver! (LTA), Steel Magnolias (GTP), Chess (KAT), Legally Blonde (LTA) and, most recently, Sister Act (LTA). Maria lives in Alexandria and is COO of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. Most recently, he played the Caretaker in The Telltale Heart (Goose Creek Players), Captain Scott in Peter and the Starcatcher (PWLT) and Dukes Senior and Frederick in As You Like It (NOVA Nightsky). Stuart, as Will Roper, survived the Tudors in A Man for All Seasons (GAC), but you’ll have to see whether he survives this one.
Richard Fiske (Count Bellievre/Kent) is a retired Navy diver who stumbled into theatre a while back and never quite found his way out. He is quietly pleased and honored to make his fourth appearance at LTA, and most grateful to his wife, Helen, for encouraging him to play. After performing onstage in San Francisco and New York City, she went over to the “dark side” and became an attorney. Since finding her way back to her second love, theatre, she has been involved in over 50 plays in the Northern Virginia area. (Her husband, Jon, is her first love.) Jessie is pleased to return to LTA, where she directed Ripcord and Design for Murder.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a group of dedicated members who support financial projects for the theatre and provide numerous social events with dinners, receptions, and other member gatherings. The Council promotes and supports volunteerism throughout the theatre to ensure continued success in all areas, i.e., backstage, front of house, box office, etc.; we also provide need-based scholarship funding to support numerous adult and youth educational programs within the theatre. The Council is proud to sponsor the Shakespeare Garden which has become a community favorite with many stopping in just to relax and “waste my time in it.”
