Hoke, a dignified, unemployed black man is hired as her chauffeur. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play spans their complex 25-year relationship to show that friendships are found in even the most unlikely circumstances.

Director’s Notes Summertime is the season for lighthearted fun, such as going on family vacations, making weekend escapes to the beach, attending county fairs, or visiting amusement and water parks, among other escapist activities. Legally Blonde: The Musical embodies such escapist entertainment. Filled with fun characters, catchy tunes that make you want to move in your seat, and an updated MGM musical plotline—girl loves boy, girl loses boy, girl goes to Harvard Law School to win him back—Legally Blonde is as fun and sugary as cotton candy on a paper cone.

However, what I enjoy most about this musical are the savory surprises hidden inside the airy spun sugar. Simple lessons but important ones nonetheless about not judging a book by its cover, the significance of living up to one’s potential, and the importance of integrity, standing by one’s word, and keeping another person’s trust. Elle Woods overcomes other people’s perception that she is nothing more than a fun-loving, Malibu-Barbie sorority girl and shows them that underneath, she is a woman with grit, smarts, unmitigated drive, and a nearly interminable optimism. She learns how to overcome roadblocks preventing her from living up to her full potential. Finally, she shows us that you do not have to compromise your integrity to get ahead. It just requires a little extra effort. These thought-provoking moments perfectly complement this sweet, summertime confection. I hope you enjoy both.

Based on the much-loved movie, this modern musical will take you on a journey of self-discovery with Elle while you enjoy the ridiculously playful and entertaining song-and-dance numbers.

LTA is one of the oldest community theatres in the Washington D.C. area thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. A successful stage production requires many volunteers working behind the scenes before and during the run of the show. Everyone performing in and nearly everyone you see working on an LTA show is a volunteer.

Meet the Cast (in alphabetical order) Benita Adams (Pilar) LTA debut! Benita is delighted to be part of such a fun-loving show. She holds a B.A. in vocal performance from Greensboro College. Favorite roles include Evil Dead (Shelly), Passing Strange (Marianna), Hairspray (Little Inez) and High School Musical 2 (Gabriella). All my love to my family, friends, and to Marcus for being the most supportive. Snap it out!

Dwayne Allen (Frat Boy Thad/Bailiff/ Ensemble) is excited to be returning to LTA after last appearing in West Side Story. He is studying musical theater at GMU. When not onstage, you can find him out on the Potomac River with “Urban Pirates”! Other recent credits include Gilligan’s Fire Island (DS), The Rocky Horror Show (Lorton Workhouse), Love, Sex and the IRS (Wolf Pack Theatre), and Sunset Boulevard (RCP) Morgan Arrivillaga (Elle Woods), a junior at JMU studying musical theater, is so excited to be returning to LTA! Credits include Still Alive (Gladys), Orlando (Sasha), The Wild Party (ensemble, Mae u/s), Beauty and the Beast Jr. (Belle). She’d like to thank her dad, her hero, who is responsible for all the amazing turns her life has taken since the last time she played Elle, her aunt for being the most awesome roomie and Big Me, her mom for endless phone calls, her stepmom for being the coolest new mom (and evil stepmother) ever, her little sisters for being the cutest little macarons alive and the amazing cast and crew.

Rachel Cahoon (Margot) is pumped to be in her first LTA production. Some of her previous roles include Julia in The Wedding Singer and Sandy in Grease. Rachel is a rising sophomore pursuing her B.F.A. in musical theater at Point Park University. She would like to thank her family and friends for always being so supportive, and she hopes you enjoy the show!

Courtney Michelle Caliendo (Dance Captain/Delta Nu Kate/Chutney Wyndham/Ensemble) is excited to make her LTA debut after a hiatus from musical theater. She was born to a former June Taylor Dolphin Starbrite Dancer (original Miami Dolphin cheerleader), and performing is in her blood. Courtney has played Annie in Annie and Racetrack in Newsies, and held various ensemble parts in other school and community theater productions. She also performed as a Boston College cheerleader and dancer and was co-founder and assistant coach of the BC Pom Squad. In her performance downtime, Courtney is an attorney at the USPTO. Kurtis Carter (Admissions Officer/Pforzheimer/Stylist Mark/Ensemble) is thrilled to be in his second show with LTA after appearing as the Bishop in Anything Goes. Previous productions include Shrek (Pied Piper), Dames at Sea (Lucky), Children of Eden (Ham/Abel), The Scarlet Pimpernel (Ozzy), Seussical (Mayor of Whoville) and Grease (Eugene). Kurtis would like to thank his mother, father, Michael, and the rest of his friends and family for coming out countless times to support him. He would also like to thank Mary Beth, Stefan, Hans, Chris, Jean, Kit and the rest of the production team for all their hard work, long hours and passion. This show would not be nearly as spectacular without them.

Chris Chapin (Sundeep Padamadan/Nikos/Ensemble) is excited to return to LTA after appearing here in West Side Story. Chris is attending Christopher Newport University, where he made his college debut in the musical Working. He thanks his family and friends for their support and knows Legally Blonde is as fun for you as the rehearsal process has been for him so far. Enjoy the show!

Maria Ciarrocchi (Elle’s Mom/Cat Lady/Ensemble) is thrilled to be returning to the LTA stage with this fantastic cast in Legally Blonde! Some favorite recent roles include Rose Seller in Oliver! (LTA), Shelby in Steel Magnolias (GTP), The Most Happy Fella (TAP) and Chess (KAT). Maria is an Alexandrian not by birth but by choice and works for the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. Love and thanks to all the incredible people involved in this show! This one is for her parents and, of course, her Angel of Music.

Shawn Cox (Professor Callahan) First time in an LTA show! Recent DC-area credits include Dr. Parker in Bat Boy (PWLT), Rochester in Jane Eyre (FCT), Dickinson in 1776 (MCP), Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar (MCP) and Baron van Swieten in Amadeus (PPF), along with a long list of musical and nonmusical roles performed elsewhere over too many years. Shawn is a self-employed management consultant, primarily with nonprofits in the areas of IT, HR, finance, change management and operations. Snaps everyone!

Sean Garcia (“UPS Guy” Kyle/Dewey/Grandmaster Chad) is excited to return to LTA after last playing Kevin Rosario in LTA’s production of In the Heights and Princeton/Rod in Avenue Q. He is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music whose credits include Ferrando in Cosi Fan Tutte (Hub Opera), Rapunzel’s Prince in Into the Woods (Riverside Center) and Grosvenor in Patience (CHAW). When not writing clichéd bios, Sean enjoys getting that coin, reminding all those around him: “Don’t start none, won’t be none,” and generally being a boss b****.

Meet the Cast (continued) Heather Gifford (Brooke Wyndham) graduated from JMU, earning a B.A. in music industry and musical theater vocal performance. She performed professionally as a singer/dancer with Holland America Cruise Line and in Myrtle Beach, SC, Atlantic City, NJ, and Las Vegas, NV. She is completing her fourth year teaching at MSA (Alexandria), where she enjoys directing music through private voice, choir and student showcases. She thanks her husband for his support of her joining the cast of Legally Blonde, which has meant him owning the majority of bedtimes with their 3-year-old son. She has had so much fun returning to the stage and is grateful to LTA for the opportunity!

Elizabeth Gillespie (Vivienne Kensington) is thrilled to be making her debut at LTA! She was last seen as Louise in RCP’s production of Gypsy.

Favorite past credits include Jane in Jane Eyre and Jo in Little Women (FCT), the Witch in Into the Woods (URTM) and Laurey in Oklahoma! (Good Shepherd Players). Elizabeth graduated from Westminster Choir College with a B.M. in music education and teaches music by day. Special thanks to Hans, Chris, Stefan, Mary Beth and the rest of the cast and crew for this fantastic experience!

Marcelo Guzmán (Aaron Schultz/Carlos/Ensemble) is excited to return to LTA after being a part of the community in In the Heights. He is a rising senior at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he will receive his bachelor of fine arts in theater performance. Some of his favorite roles include Sir Bedevere/Concorde/Others in Spamalot and Sheriff in The Trip to Bountiful at VCU. He hopes you enjoy the show, and thank you to all my friends and family for their support.

Katie Beth Hicks (Whitney/Judge/Ensemble) is excited to be returning to the stage! Katie Beth is a 2012 graduate of Wake Forest School of Law and, unless you count National AAJ Trial Team, her last performance was as Julia Sullivan in Diamond Head Theatre’s 2009 production of The Wedding Singer (Hawai’i State Theatre Award). Past credits include Ilona Ritter in She Loves Me and Anne Egerman in A Little Night Music (Manoa Valley Theatre). Mahalo to the Alexandria Singers and to Stefan for facilitating her return to theater!

Jerry Hoffman (Elle’s Dad/Winthrop/Ensemble) is making a fast return to the LTA stage after singing his heart out in The Fabulous Lipitones earlier this year. Other LTA credits include Scapino, Company, Oliver! and Dial ‘M’ for Murder. He’s performed in La Cage aux Folles, Damn Yankees, Guys and Dolls, 1776 (MCP), Company (TCP) and, last year, as Alan in The Boys in the Band (DS).

Jerry is a graduate of Catholic University and in 2015 sang with the university chorus and orchestra as the School of Music celebrated its 50th anniversary with a concert (Carmina Burana) at the Kennedy Center.

Ashley Kaplan (Delta Nu Gaelen/Court Stenographer/Ensemble) is so excited to return to LTA after performing in Anything Goes last winter!

Favorite past productions include Chicago, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Les Misérables, A Chorus Line and Pippin. When not onstage, she works as a psychologist in a group private practice in Vienna.

Halle Kaufax (Serena) is excited to be in her first production with LTA, and her second production of Legally Blonde! Halle is a recent graduate of Edison High School, where she was SGA president and was heavily involved in choir and theater. Most notable past roles include Cat in Honk (EHS), Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie (MVCCT) and Penny in Hairspray (MSA). Next year, Halle plans to attend New York University Tisch School of the Arts, where she will study musical theater in the New Studio on Broadway.

Karen Kelleher (Enid Hoops) is excited to be performing in her first LTA show. She was most recently seen as Mazzepa in Gypsy (RCP) and Photographer in from 35mm as part of the Capital Fringe Festival. Previous roles include Bird Woman in Mary Poppins (RCP), Mrs. Darling in Peter Pan (URTM), Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods (Fairfax Theatre), Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Kline Theatre), Paula in Marriage, Lizards and Love (Capital Fringe) and Joanna in Sunset Boulevard (RCP). She has also appeared as an extra on the Netflix show House of Cards (Season 1).

Katherine Lipovsky (Paulette) is delighted to be a part of this wonderful production. Katherine holds a B.A. in history from JMU and works in the residential property management field during the day. Meet the Cast (continued) Brendan Quinn (Warner Huntington III) was previously seen at LTA in A Christmas Carol (2016, Fred) and The Odd Couple, Female Version (Jesús).

He also worked behind the scenes on Key for Two, West Side Story and A Christmas Carol (2015) and served as props designer for Steel Magnolias and assistant director for Laughing Stock. Elsewhere in the area, he’s been seen in Snakebit as Jonathan (DS) and Little Women as John Brooke (ACCT). Carlie Smith (Delta Nu Veronica/D.A. Joyce Riley/Ensemble) is thrilled to be joining the ensemble of Legally Blonde in her LTA debut. After graduating from Wheaton College with a minor in theater, Carlie returned to her hometown of Arlington, VA, and has been volunteering backstage with TAP and taking musical theater courses at LTA and Theatre Lab. She is grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow as an artist in the welcoming theater community in Northern Virginia, and she looks forward to involvement in many more productions in the future.

Ryan Walker (Lowell/Assistant D.A./Ensemble) is excited to return to the Little Theatre of Alexandria. Since his LTA debut in Hairspray, he has performed in many roles throughout the DMV area. Some of his favorite roles include Linus in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Rooftop Productions), Nick in Fame: The Musical (MPAT) and Pinocchio in Shrek: The Musical (RMT). He also studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC. He would like to thank the entire cast and creative team for giving him this experience to be in one of his all-time favorite musicals!

Rebecca Weiss (Delta Nu Leilani/Cashier/Ensemble) graduated with a B.F.A. in dance and choreography from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2015. She then interned at Dance Place in Washington under the guidance of Carla Perlo and Shannon Quinn. As a professional dancer, Rebecca has worked with ClancyWorks Dance Company and Through the 4th Wall Productions in the immersive theater experience of Dream Within a Dream: Madness. Rebecca is a company member with Jane Franklin Dance and teaches young dancers throughout the area.

Meet the Crew (in alphabetical order) Kirstin Apker (Co-Props Designer/Co-Set Decoration) has filled numerous technical roles at LTA, including props designer (Key for Two, Laughing Stock), set decorator (Steel Magnolias—WATCH Award), artistic painter (Heaven Can Wait), and assistant stage manager (A Party to Murder, Plaza Suite, Sweeney Todd). She has also appeared onstage in To Kill a Mockingbird, and she serves as coordinator of the theater’s Floodlight newsletter.

Hans Bachmann (Director) is thrilled to be directing here again at LTA, the last time having been in 1999 directing Something’s Afoot. He has also appeared in LTA’s Mack and Mabel (Mack), Baby (Nick) and Stardust. He has directed many productions at various local theaters, including The Mousetrap, The Spitfire Grill, The Hollow, Me and My Girl, Showboat and The Pajama Game, among others, at LSDT; Aida (AMS); The Wiz (TAT); La Cage aux Folles, Little Shop of Horrors, South Pacific, Gypsy, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Dial ‘M’ for Murder and Some Enchanted Evening, at MCP; Hello, Dolly!, 42nd Street, Evita, Gypsy, City of Angels, On the 20th Century, Meet Me In St. Louis and My Fair Lady (RMT); They’re Playing Our Song (DS); and The Scarlet Pimpernel and Our Town (TCP). Locally, he has performed professionally at Arena Stage, ACT, Ford’s Theatre, Source Theatre, Folger Theatre, Kennedy Center, National Theatre and Signature Theatre and at a number of area dinner theaters.

Shelby Baker (Co-Set Painter) has been a painter for as long as she can remember. She graduated from Christopher Newport University with a B.A. in psychology and a minor in studio art. Legally Blonde is her first production as a set painter with LTA, and she looks forward to participating in many more. Shelby currently works at Paper Source.

Ken and Patti Crowley (Lighting Design) are excited to be working at LTA once again.

Their most recent designs include LTA’s Anything Goes, History Boys, In the Heights and 33 Variations; RCP’s Gypsy, Mary Poppins, Our Town and Master Class; PWLT’s Cabaret, The 39 Steps, and Jesus Christ Superstar; DS’s The Boys in the Band; TAP’s She Loves Me and Deathtrap; and PCP’s Black Hole. Other noteworthy designs include Curtains, Picnic, The Secret Garden, The Will Rogers Follies, Widdershins, Into the Woods, Blithe Spirit, Das Barbecü, The Teahouse of the August Moon and I Hate Hamlet. They are the recipients of numerous awards, including LTA, RCP, FCT, and WATCH Awards for Lighting Design.

Rae A. Edmonson III (Co-Producer) is debuting as a producer and thanks Mary Beth for showing him the ropes. He is currently the LTA Governor for Box Office. Previous LTA credits include Into the Woods (production assistant) and 1776 (assistant to the director).

Onstage at LTA, he was in The Music Man, Shenandoah, The Who’s Tommy, Footloose and Gypsy. Elsewhere, favorite roles include Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar (SMP) 16

and the Pharaoh in Joseph...Dreamcoat (TAP). He directs the theater department and its annual production at St. Rita School in Alexandria. Rae thanks God for His many gifts, especially his wife of 13 years, Michelle, and their three children, Makenzi, Adam and Addi.

Sarah Gale (Wardrobe) is pleased to be facilitating all the exciting quick changes in Legally Blonde. She has been involved in four past LTA shows, both on the stage (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and in the wings wardrobe-ing (Spamalot, Grey Gardens). Thanks to the awesome crew, and love to Calvin and Michael.

Heather Hicks (Hair/Wig Design) is a recent graduate of George Mason University with a B.A. in theater performance and directing and a minor in English. During her tenure at GMU, she worked with the Mason Players as director of The Laramie Project, Hucklebee in The Fantasticks, and as makeup and hair coordinator of The Threepenny Opera.

Heather is also a teaching artist with acting for young people. She is excited to make her LTA debut with Legally Blonde as the hair and wig designer.

Pam Leonowich (Master Electrician) has been climbing the light ladders at LTA for over 12 years and is proud to follow in her mother’s theater footsteps. Her mother managed and designed productions for the troops during World War II with the British Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). She is pleased to be teaming again with light designers Ken and Patti and our dedicated light crew.

Larissa Norris (Makeup Design) has been nominated for five WATCH Awards for her makeup or hair design in local shows. She received makeup nominations for Steel Magnolias (LTA), Dreamgirls (DS) and 9 to 5 (TAP) and her bloody special effects makeup for Bug (DS) and hair nominations for the retro styling for A Streetcar Named Desire (LTA).

Micheal J. O’Connor (Co-Stage Manager) stage managed A Christmas Carol (2016) and To Kill a Mockingbird for LTA, Time Stands Still for MCP, See How They Run, Nunsense and Boy Gets Girl for VTC, The Heidi Chronicles for FP, Bus Stop for RCP, A Fine and Private Place and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for DS; co-stage managed Colder Than Here for VTC, and was ASM for Shrek, Sunset Blvd, 33 Variations and August: Osage County at RCP. He can be found backstage or in the tech booth, always in the dark.

Dan Remmers (Set Design/Construction) is glad to be working with Hans and such a talented and fun cast. He recently designed the set for A Lion in Winter at TAP, and other designs include West Side Story, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife and Proof, all at LTA. Margaret Soroos (Co-Stage Manager) has been active in community theater for many years. LTA productions include Shenandoah, Das Barbecü, The Who’s Tommy, Footloose, Gross Indecency, Plaid Tidings, Oliver!, [title of show], The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Full Monty, Ragtime, In the Heights, History Boys and Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Marg is a now retired from her day job and has taken up traveling when not at the theater.

Jocelyn Steiner (Co-Props Design/Co-Set Decoration) returns for her third show with LTA, having recently decorated sets for The Fabulous Lipitones and The History Boys (for which she won an award). Jocelyn enjoys volunteering with several area community theaters, including VTC, RCP, MCP and TAP, both performing onstage and working behind the scenes producing and doing props and set dressing. She also works professionally for the Madeira School in McLean, VA, as their props master. When not involved in creative pursuits, Jocelyn moonlights by day as an attorney.

Meet the Crew (continued) Christopher A. Tomasino (Music Director) returns to LTA after music directing the awardwinning In the Heights (2015). He is very excited to be working once again with Hans, Stefan, Mary Beth, Rae, Marg, Micheal and a very talented cast, crew and band. Chris has been honored to receive WATCH Awards for music directing LTA productions of In the Heights, Hairspray, Cabaret, Das Barbecü and Tommy and was the recipient of the LTA Demaine Award for Music Direction on numerous productions as well as ACT Awards for Music Direction. He is excited to be returning to LTA soon to do music direction for The Nance. Chris is music director for Bishop Ireton High School’s Theatre Arts program.

In real life, he is a vice president with Burke & Herbert Bank.

Mona Wargo (Co-Set Painting) welcomes the opportunity to be painting again at LTA after Party to Murder. She was a longtime set painter for Dominion Stage. Mona painted such shows as The Pirates of Penzance, Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? and The Boys Next Door, for which she was nominated for an ACT Award. She also painted Prelude to a Kiss for Foundry Theater.

Alan Wray (Sound Design) is excited to be working on Legally Blonde. He has designed sound for numerous LTA productions, including Anything Goes, Ragtime, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Picnic (WATCH nomination), Rabbit Hole, 33 Variations (LTA Award) and the mysterious Widdershins (LTA Award). His sound designs for PCP have included In the Next Room, The Dixie Swim Club and the haunting Terra Nova. Alan also designed sound for TAP’s She Loves Me, The Seagull (WATCH nomination) and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Russell J. Wyland (Rigging) has been the LTA rigging chairman for the past 15 years. When he is not hanging the stage curtains, which he does for most shows, he dresses sets (most recently Red, White and Tuna and Anything Goes) and produces (most recently A Christmas Carol and Red, White and Tuna and the upcoming The Audience in February/March 2018).

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!

The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 80 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including exterior defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
