Director’s Notes

I have to admit that my age is showing in the fact that Jesus Christ Superstar was the first rock opera concept album that I purchased in 1970 when in my 20s. It was an ear-opening musical followed by more purchases like Tommy and Arthur in this same opera vein.

Now I find myself directing the stage version of this fantastic show. I must admit that I prefer the live version more than the album and movie. I would like to give special thanks to the original director, Lisa Anne Bailey, who had to drop out because of illness. However, we hope we have given her vision and corporate concept a treatment she would appreciate.

This show would not be possible without a great hardworking cast and a crew of designers who have worked tirelessly to bring the show to the stage for your enjoyment. I would like to give a shout-out to all the designers, builders, stage crew, musicians, stage managers and producers. In particular, I give thanks to Chris Tomasino and Michael Page, who have supported and carried me in my musical direction debut. Enjoy the show.

Meet the Cast

(in alphabetical order)

Hilary Adams (Ensemble) is thrilled to be returning to the LTA mainstage! Her most recent performance was as Mrs. Cratchit in A Christmas Carol in 2016. Previous roles include Eunice in A Streetcar Named Desire (LTA), Karma in Laughing Stock (LTA) and Guildenstern in Hamlet (PCP). Earlier this year, Hilary directed a one-act as part of LTA’s New Voices series, and enjoyed the opportunity to work on the other side of the production table. Hilary would like to thank her family and boyfriend for their enthusiastic support of all of her artistic endeavors.

Rishabh Bajekal (Jesus of Nazareth) is thrilled to be making his LTA debut with this talented ensemble. Rishabh’s big break occurred in first grade as the titular role in Christopher Columbus Gets His First Compass. The school newspaper raved, “We loved the tunic and tights” and “He did indeed get that compass.” His favorite roles include Nanki-Poo in The Mikado (VLOC), Camille in The Merry Widow (VLOC) and Chuck in Footloose (Loudoun Centre Theater). When not performing, Rishabh works as an analyst, making fancy slides with a variety of charts and graphs. He hopes you enjoy the show!

Cody Boehm (Simon Zealotes) is thrilled to be making her LTA debut! She was last seen on the D.C. stage in Spring Awakening (Thea) at the Keegan Theatre. She has since been in NYC performing at such venues as Lincoln Center, 54 Below and Joe’s Pub. NY Theater: See What I Wanna See (Kesa/Wife/Actress), The Danger Year (Jill), JCS (Priest). Cody is a proud Pace University MT alum! She would like to thank her fabulous cast, as well as her family and friends! @csboehm

Tyrone Brown Jr. (Ensemble) is a native of Chesapeake, VA. He has a bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University, where he started pursuing acting, appearing in many shows including Dreamgirls, A Musical Tribute to Whitney, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, The Brother Size, Black Nativity, Kansas City Review and Road Less Traveled. Tyrone is excited to make his debut with LTA and looks forward to seeing what the future holds!

Peter Curtin (Ensemble) is thrilled to debut at LTA with a company of such wonderful performers and people. He has recently appeared as Leon Czolgosz in Assassins (DS) and as an ensemble member in She Loves Me (TAP).

Alyssa DeGrace (Ensemble) is thrilled to make her community theater debut in LTA’s Jesus Christ Superstar. After spending the last 20 years of her life watching productions in New York, Baltimore and the DMV, she is excited to share the stage with this talented cast, crew and production team. She would like to dedicate her performance to her friends and family, especially the newest addition.

Hans Dettmar (Pontius Pilate) was last seen at LTA in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). More recently he appeared as Sir Robin in Spamalot (RMT) and Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha (TAP). Favorite shows include: A Little Night Music (TAP), Stalag 17 (American Century Theater), The History Boys (ESP), The Elephant Man (College Community Theater with 2nd Flight), The Underpants (College Community Theater), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (SMP), 1776 (LTA), South Pacific (SP) and The Music Man (SP). As always, thanks to his best friend, Marianne.

Ryaan Farhadi (Caiaphas) is so thankful to be making his LTA debut in one of his favorite roles. Recent credits include Mereb in Aida (RCP), Woof in Hair (VYP), as well as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, Leaf’s Dad in 25th Annual... Spelling Bee, Black N Red in Deadwood Dick and others. He would like to thank his family, his wonderful friends, Babs, and the entire cast and crew at LTA for their hard work and love.

Michael Gale (Peter) is grateful to be performing in his sixth LTA musical. Most recently onstage as theBalladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald in Dominion Stage’s Assassins, he appeared at LTA as Malcolm McGregor in TheFull Monty, Tateh in Ragtime, killer-rabbit puppeteer in Spamalot, a community member in In the Heights and Purser in Anything Goes. Offstage, Michael works for an international development nonprofit. Love to Sarah and Calvin.

Andy Izquierdo (King Herod) is excited to be back at LTA, where he has recently appeared as Elwood P. Dowd in Harvey. Favorite credits include LTA’s Rabbit Hole and Chicago; RCP’s Twilight of the Golds and Moonlight and Magnolias; KAT’s A New Brain (WATCH Award), Assassins, Kiss of the Spider Woman (WATCH Award) and The Rocky Horror Show; ESP’s Blood Brothers (WATCH Award); and TAP’s Noises Off and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. A huge thank you to the amazing cast and crew. For Maddie and Riley.

Emmy Kampe (Priest) is ecstatic to be making her LTA debut. She has returned to the stage in the U.S. after years of performing in Germany and was most recently seen locally in RMT’s production of Shrek: The Musical. Favorite roles include Little Red in Into the Woods, Faith in Kindertransport (KMC) and, offstage, rescue dog mom. A small-town Midwesterner, she is enamored with the opportunities afforded in the DMV and grateful for the wonderful people she has met here, though she is considerably less enthused about the traffic.

Katie Kellenberger (Ensemble) is delighted to join the Jesus Christ Superstar cast for her second LTA mainstage production. Most recently, she appeared as Ruby in Anne of Green Gables and Louise/Kathy in Amityville. Katie is a musical co-chair with NextGenLTA and works as a journalist with a local publishing group.

Amy Lapthorne (Annas) G’day mates! Hailing from Australia’s Gold Coast, Amy has previously been involved in a number of Australian musical theater and cabaret performances (which her mum swears were quite good) and currently stars (unofficially) as Australia’s National Anthem singer. Until now, she has considered forcing Americans to try (and inevitably hate) Vegemite to be her greatest achievement in the States. Amy is thrilled to be performing in her first production with LTA and expects that this experience can only surpass that! Hooroo!

Alex Lopez (Ensemble) is delighted to be in his first LTA show. He has been performing locally for the last eight years. Previous credits include The Regulars (Capital Fringe Festival); Pas de Deux and The Jacqmin Family (Source Festival); If/Then, A Streetcar Named Desire, Fabulation, Chess, Titanic, Lungs and Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train. He has been honing his acting skills at Teatro de la Luna and more recently at the Theatre Lab Honors Acting Conservatory.

Tracey Lucas (Ensemble) is thrilled to make her LTA debut in Jesus Christ Superstar with such a heavenly cast! Favorite roles include Frenchy in Grease (Erie Playhouse), Rose Alvarez in Bye Bye Birdie (Mercyhurst Prep), The Bogle in Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol (Roadhouse Theatre), Sister Hubert in Nunsense (Mercyhurst Prep) and Nancy Twinkle in Little Mary Sunshine (Edinburgh Festival Fringe). Offstage, Tracey is one half of D.C.-area PR firm Nardi Media, and cat-mom to Rosaline and Macbeth.

Rosemarie O’Connor (Ensemble) is making her LTA debut. Previously she has worked with Port City (Tangled in the Tinsel), Encore Stage & Studio (Once Upon a Mattress) and Marymount Actors’ Guild (Ordinary Days, Next to Normal, etc.). Big thanks to the Sunday Dinner Family, her dear friends who know too much, and the cast, crew and production team. Love from Little Bittie!

Carlos Antonio Ramirez (Judas Iscariot) spends the majority of the week reporting traffic conditions around the D.C. and Baltimore areas on numerous radio stations, most proudly on the iHeart stations he’s listened to since he was a kid. Since high school, Carlos has loved performing in musicals and has been featured in the likes of 24 Words, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pirates of Penzance and Release: A Rock Opera. In his second time appearing in his all-time favorite musical, Carlos is proud and honored to be playing the complex and challenging role of Judas Iscariot.

LTA is one of the oldest community theatres in the Washington D.C. area thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. A successful stage production requires many volunteers working behind the scenes before and during the run of the show. Everyone performing in and nearly everyone you see working on an LTA show is a volunteer.

As a volunteer community theatre group, LTA welcomes anyone interested in becoming involved. There are lots of opportunities at LTA, for all experience levels! So, come play with us.

Mike Sarisky (Ensemble) is proud to be performing in his first LTA production. His previous credits include Tommy Djilas in The Music Man (Encore Stage and Studio), Gilbert Blythe in Anne of Green Gables (St. Andrew’s Players) and Ladahlord in James and the Giant Peach (Encore Stage and Studio). He hopes you enjoy the show!

Alex Savage (Ensemble) is excited to be in Jesus Christ Superstar, his first LTA production. He is a rising senior at Thomas Edison High School, where during his junior year he performed as King Maximilian in Cinderella and as Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream . For the latter role he received a Cappies nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a play. He hopes to continue his passion for theater in college and by appearing in more LTA productions.

Thea Simpson (Mary Magdalene) is thrilled to be making her LTA debut in Jesus Christ Superstar. Previous roles include Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray and Anne Egerman in A Little Night Music at Geneva Amateur Operatic Society (Geneva, Switzerland), Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Simply Theatre, Versoix, Switzerland) and most recently Alex Understudy and Ensemble in the original musical Out of Line, premiering at James Madison University. She is a junior musical theater major at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Théo Touitou (Ensemble) is a French American actor from Philadelphia currently at the New School in Manhattan for his BFA in theater. Previous roles include Dr. Finkelstein in The Nightmare Before Christmas (The New School), Edmund in King Lear (Versoix, Switzerland) and Player 1 in Monstrosity (The New School).

Cassie Truchess (Ensemble) is an undergraduate student at Regent University. Cassie has been featured in productions such as Grease, The Laramie Project, Honk! and She Loves Me. She is thankful for her friends’ and family’s support!

Ryan Walker (Ensemble) is excited to be returning to LTA, after having done Legally Blonde last summer and Hairspray in 2011. Ryan studied musical theater at Catawba College and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Some of his favorite recent roles include Nicky Puppeteer 2/Mrs. T/Newcomer (Avenue Q), Seymour (Little Shop of Horrors), Lucas (The Addams Family ) and Male Swing ( Rock of Ages ). Ryan would like to dedicate his performance to his family for their continual support of his endeavors, and he hopes the audience enjoys the show!

Janae Witcher (Ensemble/Dance Captain) is very excited to be making her LTA debut in Jesus Christ Superstar. She has been performing in the arts since she was 3 years old and has participated in shows such as In the Heights and Cinderella (BMHS Theater). She has also been a part of the Teens Performance Ensemble for two years, serving as co-captain for the productions. She is attending Virginia Commonwealth University as a criminal justice major with a minor in dance and choreography.

Alexandra Whittington (Ensemble) is thrilled to be in her first LTA production! Most recently she was seen in The Sound of Music (Maria) at the Academy of the Holy Cross. Liz Colandene (Assistant Choreographer) is pleased to be working on her second production with LTA. Although she has had experience as dance captain and acting in various shows, this is her debut as part of the production team. She received a bachelor’s of music at the Catholic University of America in 2016. Liz would like to thank Cristina Cayere, her mentor, for inspiring her to pursue choreography.

Rob Cork (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) has stage managed many productions and education class showcases at LTA, beginning with The Sorcerer in 1996. He also directed The Soul Sitter and A Christmas Carol at LTA. Favorite roles include Jungle Cruise Skipper at Walt Disney World, Charlie Davenport in Annie Get Your Gun (SCT) and Melbrook the Jester in Rumpelstiltskin with the Bergen County Players in NJ. He currently appears as Will Rogers in a traveling production of Will Rogers’ U.S.A. with Kaleidoscope Theatre Company, a nonprofit organization that he co-founded.

Ken and Patti Crowley (Lighting Design) are excited to be working again at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. Their most recent designs include LTA’s The Nance, Harvey, The Audience, In the Heights and 33 Variations; RCP’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Peter and the Starcatcher, Aida and Gypsy;PWLT’s Cabaret, The 39 Steps and Jesus Christ Superstar; DS’s The Boys in the Band; TAP’s She Loves Me and Deathtrap; and PCP’s Black Hole. Other noteworthy designs include Curtains, Picnic, The Secret Garden, The Will Rogers Follies, Widdershins, Into the Woods, Blithe Spirit, Das Barbecü, The Teahouse of the August Moon and I Hate Hamlet. They are the recipients of numerous awards, including LTA, RCP, FCT and WATCH awards for their lighting design. They want to dedicate their design to the faculty, students and alumni of Bishop McNamara and La Reine High Schools, where they first met.

Eileen Doherty (Master Electrician) is excited to be working with Ken and Patti and the talented JCS team in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical! She can usually be found volunteering somewhere backstage, in the booth or co-producing with Jamie Blake. Thanks to the fabulous LTA light crew and Kerry for getting me started at LTA. Hope J.J. (can you believe it—JCS at LTA!!!) and Suzanne keep smiling down on this theater.

Margaret Evans-Joyce (Co-Producer) has produced about a dozen productions and stage managed almost twice that many. She served four years as the Little Theater of Alexandria’s President and was most recently the Governor for Production. She received the Outstanding Service to LTA Award and the award for Long and Exceptional Service in a Single Department. She also shared the award for the 2014 Outstanding Production of the Year for Avenue Q. She retired eight years ago and has since been an adjunct professor at Howard University in the area of speech and language pathology.

Mary Ferrara (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) is happy to be back in Old Town after 30 years living and working in theater in Los Angeles. Since her return last year, she has worked props for A Party to Murder and as assistant stage manager for Anything Goes, The Fabulous Lipitones, Driving Miss Daisy, A Christmas Carol, Anne of Green Gables and The Nance.

Austin Fodrie (Co-Stage Manager) is excited to be back at LTA and to co-stage manage with Joan Lada again! He has volunteered at LTA, ACCT and TAP. He serves on the ACCT board and TAP board as executive producer. His most recent productions include stage managing for Sweeney Todd at TAP. Austin is thankful for the opportunity to work at LTA backstage once again!

Michelle Hall (Properties Design) is delighted to be joining LTA again as props designer for JCS. Before this production, she served as an LTA volunteer, as props designer, front of house volunteer and assistant stage manager. Before working with LTA she has been involved in university and community theater both on and off stage. Michelle humbly thanks the props crew for making it all happen, and she thanks her family for their unending patience and support.

Jim Howard (Director) has been working in theater, television and movies for the past 55 years. He’s attended several one-act play festivals and directed the award-winning Etched in Stone (NVTA). He previously directed Heaven Can Wait, Moon Over Buffalo (Castaways), A Party to Murder (2016) and the WATCH-nominated Driving Miss Daisy (2017—LTA). He’s a 25-year member of SAG-AFTRA, and his most notable roles were Walt Drummond, a recurring character on Homicide: Life on the Street (NBC), Mr. Inside in The Wire (HBO) and Bobby Joe Fabian in The FBI Files (Discovery Channel). He thanks his wife, Terry, for her patience and dedicates all endeavors to his grandsons, L.J. and JAX.

Joan A.S. Lada (Co-Stage Manager) is happy to return to LTA and join Austin Fodrie as a member of the SM team. SM gigs for LTA: The Audience, Anything Goes, West Side Story, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), In the Heights, Spamalot, The Rocky Horror Show, Avenue Q, 33 Variations, Gypsy, Chicago, Lady Windemere’s Fan, 1776, Into the Woods, Footloose, The Philadelphia Story, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Tommy. Steve Lada (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) is a founding member of the Noble Blades stage combat troupe and has performed at the Maryland Renaissance Festival and in the Washington Opera’s productions of Tristan and Isolde and Julius Caesar. His choreography has been honored with WATCH Awards for Richard III, Veronica’s Room, Romeo and Juliet, Kiss Me, Kate and The Miracle Worker. His work was last seen at LTA in Monty Python’s Spamalot As always, Steve thanks the love of his life for getting him started on this incredible journey.

Robert S. Kraus (Co-Producer) is very excited, humbled and honored to be producing once again for James Howard and working with MEJ and Kelsey. Recent producing experiences at LTA include co-producing Anne of Green Gables, A Party to Murder , To Kill a Mockingbird, Boeing Boeing, Twentieth Century, All the King’s Women, Oliver!, The Secret Garden, The Sunshine Boys, The Gin Game and The Ritz. Onstage appearances at LTA include the Paper Hanger in Auntie Mame, Ancient Man in The Teahouse of the August Moon and a tourist in Lettice and Lovage.

Matt Liptak (Set Designer) is excited to be set designing at LTA again. Previous DMV set designs include Harvey (LTA), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (RCP), Fabulation (PCP), A Christmas Carol (LTA), The Fabulous Lipitones (LTA), The History Boys (LTA) and Steel Magnolias (LTA—WATCH Award winner for set decoration). Outside of the DMV, Liptak has designed sets for productions of Les Misérables, Honk! and Much Ado About Nothing. Liptak is no stranger to the stage and has been seen acting in numerous productions throughout the DMV. He thanks his friends and family for their support.

Tom O’Reilly (Master Carpenter) is pleased to spend some more time with LTA after building sets for The Nance and last year’s Driving Miss Daisy (WATCH nomination). He is also preparing to build Hunchback of Notre Dame for the The Arlington Players this fall, his fifth show with them, and previously won a WATCH Award for Man of La Mancha.

Michael Page (Choreographer) is excited to be part of his fifth production with LTA, having fight choreographed To Kill a Mockingbird and A Party to Murder. Earlier this year he designed the lights for Anne of Green Gables at LTA and Any Given Monday, How I Learned to Drive and Gilligan’s Fire Island at DS. He has a B.A. in theater and dance with a focus in light design from Christopher Newport University and is a certified actor combatant. He hopes you enjoy the show!

Jean Schlichting and Kit Sibley (Co-Costume Design) are excited to be part of this production of a phenomenon that had a big impact on pop culture as they were growing up. They thank the director and producers for asking them to help bring this production to life. Working generally as a team, Kit and Jean have done many shows at LTA and other local community theaters. Most recently at LTA they costumed Anything Goes (WATCH nomination), Legally Blonde—The Musical, Anne of Green Gables, Harvey and The Nance. They also recently costumed the national premiere of The Judicial Murder of Mrs. Surratt at ACCT.

Carol Strachan (Set Decoration) is no stranger to LTA, having produced last season’s WATCH-nominated play, Driving Miss Daisy. She also produced Witness for the Prosecution, Scapino and A Christmas Carol. At LTA, she has appeared onstage in Pack of Lies, Lettice and Lovage, Blithe Spirit, Lady Windermere’s Fan and It Runs in the Family and walk-ons in Twentieth Century and Heaven Can Wait and regularly serves as British accent coach. Carol also produced the award-winning Jesus Christ Superstar for MCP.

Christopher A. Tomasino (Music Director) returns to LTA with Jesus Christ Superstar, having just music directed The Nance. He is very excited to be working with Jim, Michael, MEJ, Robert, Joan and Austin, as well as with our highly talented cast, crew and band. Superstar is the 32nd production Chris has music directed at LTA since starting in the fall of 1988 with Chicago. He has been honored to receive the WATCH Award for Music Direction on LTA productions of In the Heights, Hairspray, Cabaret, Das Barbecü and Tommy. He has also been the recipient of the LTA Demaine Award for Music Direction on numerous productions, as well as ACT Awards for Music Direction. In addition to LTA, Chris has been the music director for Bishop Ireton High School’s theater arts program for the past 30 years. In real life Chris is a vice president with Burke and Herbert Bank in Alexandria.

Ruben Vellekoop (Co-Sound Design) is very grateful to Alan, Jim and Robert for giving him the opportunity to make his sound design debut. Big up to his wife, family and friends. Directing credits: The Last 5 Years (Colonial Players of Annapolis); Face Time and I Got You, Babe (Infinity Stage); The Audience (LTA); Lazarus (Unstrung Harpist); and The City of Conversation (Colonial Players of Annapolis). Acting credits: Roger Strong/Branton in Catch Me If You Can (NST) and Voice/Looney Tunes in Why Torture Is Wrong (and the People Who Love Them) (Colonial Players of Annapolis). Mona Wargo (Set Painting) is pleased to be back for another season after jointly winning the LTA Pearl Award for Excellence in Set Painting for A Party to Murder, her first show with LTA. She has painted for other groups, including FP (CCDC) Prelude to a Kiss and volunteered 10 years with DS, where she was nominated for an ACT Award for The Boys Next Door. Mona is looking forward to teaching a set painting class with LTA in the fall.

Robin Worthington (Wardrobe) is delighted to lead the wardrobe team for the LTA production family of JCS. She has loved serving on the wardrobe team for many shows and every LTA play during the 2017-18 season, when she dressed the legally blonde’s friends, Miss Daisy’s son and driver, Vanya and his sisters, Scrooge and his ghosts, the huge and energetic cast at Green Gables, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and Harvey. She thanks her daughter and grandchildren for their enduring support, especially for feeding her pup during performances and those yummy late night leftovers in the fridge.

Alan Wray (Co-Sound Design) is excited to be working on this production along with his co-designer, Ruben Vellekoop. Alan has designed sound for various LTA productions as well as for other theaters. He designed Ragtime, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Will Rogers Follies, Legally Blonde and Anything Goes (LTA Award). He designed sound for TAP’s She Loves Me and The Seagull (WATCH nomination). For Dominion Stage: Spring Awakening and Boys in the Band (WATCH nomination). Occasionally he can be seen producing shows. His last co-production was Anne of Green Gables—The Musical.

Kelsey Yudice (Assistant Producer) was last seen in LTA’s production of Steel Magnolias (Shelby) and directing The Talk with LTA’s Night of Comedic Staged Readings. She is an associate artist with InterAct Story Theatre, where she was seen in their productions of The Town That Cried Avalanche and The Legend of Pufferfish Pat. Kelsey is also a director, a teaching artist and the education outreach director with Moonlit Wings Productions. Kelsey would like to thank MEJ and Robert for making her first producing experience wonderful. Much love to her family: Kellen, Lilo and Apollo.

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!

The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 80 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including exterior defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
