Director’s Notes Misery Loves Golf. Wait. I believe it’s Misery loves comedy. Isn’t it the same thing? Golf is Comedy … at least my game is. If ever there was a time when we need a good laugh, it’s now. With tensions growing in our country, the constant drama in Washington, and all our struggles to stay focused on our daily lives, comedy needs to take center stage. As Charles Dickens put it, “There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.” Or as Maya Angelou says, “I don't trust anyone who doesn't laugh.” Ken Ludwig’s A Fox on the Fairway fulfills that mission: It makes us laugh. According to the dictionary, a farce is “a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations.” Golf has many of those same qualities, doesn’t it? In farce, the catastrophes line up like the dominoes in chaos theory, where a disruption in one field inevitably leads to disruption in another. But luckily, unlike the inevitable unraveling of misdeeds in tragedy, farce graces us with the gift of laughter. A Fox on the Fairway allows us the chance to laugh in the face of such disaster … err … golf. I am fortunate to have this opportunity to direct LTA’s production of Ken Ludwig’s A Fox on the Fairway. My goal is to honk the noses of those hoity-toity private country club members and loosen up their stuffed shirts. Or just showcase a play where golf, sex and money get a hole in one … or two … maybe three.

SHOW SYNOPSIS Each year, members of Quail Valley, a once-posh country club, compete in an intra-club tournament against their archrivals from the upscale Crouching Squirrel Country Club. This year, more than a championship and bragging rights are on the line. This hilarious farce about finding true love, lost parents, priceless antiques and the middle of the fairway is set against the backdrop of the grandest sport, complete with funny lingo, ugly sweaters and plaid polyester trousers. Meet the Cast (in alphabetical order) Lorraine Bouchard (Muriel) is delighted to be back at LTA. Audiences probably recall her performance as Sonia in last season’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Some of her other roles include Grandma in The Addams Family (musical) with Chalice Theatre, Oiser in Steel Magnolias and Helga in Deathtrap with WPP and Vernadette in Dixie Swim Club at ACCT. Other memorable productions include Taking Sides at PCP, The Greatest Holiday Show (N)Ever with TCP, All’s Well That Ends Well (RM) and A Tuna Christmas (MCP), Brendan Chaney (Dickie), a native of Aberdeen, North Carolina, was introduced to the films of John Ford and John Huston at a young age by his parents. Ever since, he’s had the acting bug. In high school, he was a competitive speech and debater on a national level. When he was accepted to college, he had to find an outlet, and theater seemed the natural place. By the end of his freshman year, he was on an acting scholarship. He tackled a diverse series of roles, from Uncle Peck in How I Learned to Drive to Robert in Proof. After college he took some time off until his two recent roles in An Unnecessary Farce (MCP) and Taking Sides (PCP). Ken Kemp (Bingham) last appeared at LTA as Moonface Martin in Anything Goes (LTA Award for outstanding actor in a musical). Past favorite roles include Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady (PTC and WOB), Harold Hill in The Music Man (DTC and CinC), John Adams in 1776 (MST and FCT), Stage Manager in Our Town (RLT) and George in Same Time, Next Year (RLT and GAC). He has also appeared on House of Cards, Veep and American Titans; in numerous episodes for Investigation Discovery and Discovery Health; and in several indie films and shorts. Raeanna Nicole Larson (Louise) is happy to be appearing in her third LTA production, most recently as pseudo-ballerina Essie Carmichael in You Can’t Take It with You and Belle in A Christmas Carol (2018). In the Virginia area, Raeanna has also played Molly Aster in Peter and the Starcatcher (RCP) and Laertes in Hamlet (PCP). Special thanks to Cameron for his support; he makes a great onstage boyfriend but an even better one in real life. Cameron McBride (Justin) is an intellectual property attorney in Alexandria. This is his second performance at LTA; he had his debut in A Christmas Carol (2018). He is new to the area and is enjoying the warm welcome by the Northern Virginia community. Cameron wants to thank his friends and family for all their support and is honored to be sharing the stage with such a talented cast. Patricia Nicklin (Pamela) has spent some time at country clubs but only as a tennis player. She did once work at Golf Digest, which means she can fake playing golf. Pat is both an actress and a singer, having most recently appeared in the Theatre Lab of DC’s production of Around the World in 80 Days in the role of Passepartout. She is a member of the Stonehill Theatre Foundation, where she has appeared as suffragist Alice Paul in Republic Undone, Dolly Madison in The Republic for Which We Stand and music director and lead vocalist in Arguing with God. Pat lives in Old Town Alexandria with her husband and dog, Angel. 7

Meet the Crew (in alphabetical order) Ceci Albert and Lisa Brownsword (Co-Costume Design) are delighted to return to LTA, where they designed costumes for A Christmas Carol (2014), The Odd Couple (Female Version), Steel Magnolias, The Audience and Red, White and Tuna. They have also collaborated on shows at SMP, ACCT, HBP, MCP, DS, PCP and TACT. Ceci and Lisa would like to thank their families and friends for indulging them as they turn every room into a sewing and fitting room. Jeffrey Auerbach and Kimberly Crago (Co-Lighting Design, Co-Master Electricians) are lighting stalwarts at LTA, designing Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike; Red, White and Tuna; A Christmas Carol (twice), and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), for which they won the WATCH Award for outstanding lighting design. They have designed for other community theaters in the area, including SMP, MCP, TAP, ACCT and RCP. Kimberly is dedicating this show to Steve Crago, her very patient husband; and Jeffrey is dedicating it to his fabulous family, David and Katie Clement. Stacey Becker (Properties Design) is happy to be working on another production at LTA. She recently worked on Dracula, for which she received WATCH Award nominations for set dressing and set painting; she was the co-winner of the WATCH Award for set painting. She is also a recipient of LTA’s Excellence in Set Painting Award for Anne of Green Gables: The Musical. Stacey wants to thank Luana and Russ for including her on their team. Jamie Blake (Co-Wardrobe Coordinator) is thrilled to be working alongside Donna again and is pleased to be working with the team of Scott, Luana and Russ and the cast of A Fox on the Fairway. Jamie is a 30-plus-year member of LTA and has dressed the Queen of England; the entire population of Tuna, Texas; and a barbershop quartet, among many others. And long, long ago, Jamie won the LTA Award for Outstanding New Member. Luana Bossolo (Co-Producer) has traded in her paintbrush for a producer’s clipboard with A Fox on the Fairway. She has previously served as an assistant producer for LTA’s productions of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Fabulous Lipitones, and she has served in just about every capacity behind the scenes, including properties, wardrobe and set painting. LTA audiences probably remember her paint designs for The Audience and To Kill a Mockingbird (WATCH nomination). Susan Boyd (Hair and Makeup Design) is happy to be designing this fun show at LTA. She has designed costumes, hair and/or makeup for film and theater in the DC area and has won both WATCH and LTA awards. Susan is Governor for Artistic Support at LTA, where she is surrounded by great people. In her day job, Susan is a wardrobe stylist and image consultant, teaching real people about the importance of dress and impression management. Ken Brown (Set Construction) is delighted to be working with such a great production team for A Fox on the Fairway. He has designed and built sets since joining LTA in 2016. His sets include Red, White and Tuna, The Audience and A Christmas Carol (2017), for which he was nominated for LTA’s Excellence in Set Design award. Ken would like to thank all the volunteers who work so hard to create such a beautiful production. 8

Sherry Clarke (Co-Stage Manager) first “dabbled in the arts” with the typical childhood neighborhood plays. In her late teens, she experienced high school/college plays and musicals, starting a 13-career as a vocalist based in Seattle. In Alexandria, she discovered LTA, a new home in which to explore her theatrical roots by way of community theater. Sherry’s most recent stage management credits including LTA’s Harvey, August: Osage County and The Fantasticks. Donna Hauprich (Co-Wardrobe Coordinator) has worked backstage as dresser and wardrobe chief for many productions at LTA, from spoofs of Shakespeare where lively entanglements left gowns, wigs and bustles flung around the stage to the classic American period comedy You Can’t Take It with You. Welcome to A Fox on the Fairway, which should be somewhere between. By day, Donna works as a massage therapist. Marian Holmes (Set Design, Co-Set Decoration) is delighted to be participating in A Fox on the Fairway. Her set designs include Plaza Suite and Driving Miss Daisy (the first time). She has co-dressed several sets with Russ Wyland, including The Full Monty; Red, White and Tuna; and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Brittney Huffman (Co-Stage Manager) is a recent transplant to the DMV area from Pittsburgh, where she worked with multiple community theaters, both on- and backstage. Her most recent productions include onstage in A Christmas Carol this past December at LTA and backstage during You Can’t Take It with You. Favorite previous productions include Macbeth, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Westing Game and Lend Me a Tenor. Matt Liptak (Photographer) does it all: photography, set design and acting. His set designs at LTA include Dracula, Harvey, The Fabulous Lipitones, The History Boys and Steel Magnolias. Matt is also an award-winning actor. Featured in A Fox on the Fairway are a few of Matt’s photographic portraits: timeless photos of famous LTA golfers. Ken Ludwig (Playwright) is a two-time Olivier Award-winning playwright whose work is performed every night of the year throughout the world in more than 30 countries and over 20 languages. He has written 24 plays and musicals, with six Broadway productions and seven in London’s West End. His Tony Award-winning play Lend Me a Tenor was called “one of the classic comedies of the 20th century” by The Washington Post. His other plays and musicals include Crazy for You (five years on Broadway, Tony Award for Best Musical), Moon Over Buffalo (Broadway and West End), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Broadway), Treasure Island (West End), Twentieth Century (Broadway), Leading Ladies, Shakespeare in Hollywood, The Three Musketeers, The Game’s Afoot, A Fox on the Fairway, The Beaux’ Stratagem, Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery and A Comedy of Tenors. His critically acclaimed adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, written at the request of the Christie Estate, premiered this season to sold-out houses at McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, and his world-premiere adaptation of Robin Hood! opens at The Old Globe this summer. Mr. Ludwig has received commissions from The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Bristol Old Vic and The Old Globe, and he is a Sallie B. Goodman Fellow of McCarter Theatre. His many awards and honors include the Charles MacArthur Award, two Helen Hayes Awards, the Southeastern Theatre Conference Distinguished Career Award, the Edgar Award for Best Mystery of the Year, and the Edwin Forrest Award for Contributions to the American Theatre. His book How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare (Random House) won the Falstaff Award for Best Shakespeare Book of 2014, and his essays are published by the Yale Review. He holds degrees from Harvard and Cambridge University.

Meet the Crew (continued) Kathy Murphy (Set Painting) is a longtime student of the fine arts but relatively new to the creative world of set painting. Since joining LTA in 2015, Kathy worked on several painting crews before scoring a hole-in-one with paint designs for A Christmas Carol (2017); Red, White and Tuna; and The Audience. She is thrilled to work with the producers, director and cast on this show. Michael Page (Stage Combat Choreography) is excited to be a part of his seventh LTA production, having choreographed the stage combat in Dracula, To Kill a Mockingbird, and A Party to Murder. He has a B.A. in theater and dance from Christopher Newport University, has garnered 12 WATCH awards for fight choreography, and is a certified actor combatant. Scott J. Strasbaugh (Director) is making his directorial debut at LTA with A Fox on the Fairway, but he has directed widely in the area, including The Underpants (FCT), The Diary of Anne Frank (PWLT), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (SP) and Deathtrap (FCT). LTA audiences probably recall seeing him as Charles Dabernow Schmendiman in Picasso at the Lapin Agile (WATCH nomination) and Mr. Pinky in Hairspray (WATCH nomination). Other productions include The Witches of Eastwick (Signature), Moonshine Murders (StageCoach), California Suite (SP), Twelfth Night (SP), The Man Who Came to Dinner (SP) and Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular with The Rockettes. If you still can’t place the face, he has also appeared in major motion pictures: Zoolander (Olaf), Blue Ridge (store clerk), Nervous Ticks (Kendall), Highway to Hell (Fina/Stuntman) and Sugar Scull Girls (Thaddeus). Krista White (Co-Sound Design) has been volunteering in the LTA sound department for about a year and is excited to be helping design for the first time with A Fox on the Fairway. She loves the theater, especially musicals, and makes regular trips to Broadway. In her opinion, the Little Theater of Alexandria rivals any professional theater with the quality of its productions, and she is excited and proud to be a part of the team! Alan Wray (Co-Sound Design) is excited to be working on this production with Krista. LTA patrons will recall Alan’s many sound designs here, including Picnic (WATCH nomination), 33 Variations (LTA Award), You Can’t Take It with You and the haunting Widdershins (LTA Award). He designed sound for TAP’s The Seagull (WATCH nomination) and for DS’s The Boys in the Band (WATCH nomination). Occasionally Alan can be seen co-producing LTA shows: his last was Anne of Green Gables: The Musical, and he looks forward to next season’s The Haunting of Hill House. Russell M. Wyland (Co-Producer, Co-Set Decoration, Rigging) has produced over 20 productions at LTA and has won several LTA and WATCH awards for best production, including Second Lady, The Teahouse of the August Moon, Hairspray, 33 Variations and Monty Python’s Spamalot. He has also won LTA and WATCH awards for sound design (Born Yesterday), special effects (Sleuth and Blithe Spirit) and set decoration (Nude with Violin, The Full Monty and Avenue Q). The two awards that mean the most to Russ, however, are LTA’s Outstanding Service in a Single Department for his work in rigging and Outstanding Service to LTA. Russ is currently LTA President. 10

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify! The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 80 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
