Dir ector ’s Notes

The Fantasticks was one of t he first musicals (along wit h A Chorus Line) in which I knew all t he songs before ever seeing a production.

I still recall my first visit as a New York student actor to t he tiny Sullivan Street t heater (which, alas, no longer exists) to see t his show. Over t he intervening years, I’ve seen numerous productions of t his tuneful and deceptively simple play. Long after I moved from New York to t he DC area, I’d conclude many an NYC t heater weekend wit h a visit to t he Jerry Orbach Theater (t he production’s last home in NYC before its final curtain came down in 2017) in midtown to see t his show.

Apart from t he gorgeous score and great songs, what really stands out to me about t his p l ay is i t s t h e a t ric a l i t y. We h av e

, Shakespearean, vaudeville. Young lovers divided by feuding families sounds like a certain play set in fair Verona. The vegetation fixation of t he gardeners Bellomy and Hucklebee hints at Shakespeare’s green world comedies. The wall makes us t hink of t he rude mechanicals’ production of “Pyramus and Thisbe” in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play is loosely based on Les Romanesques (The Romancers) by Edmond Rostand (yes, he who wrote Cyrano de Bergerac, anot her popular play about a complicated romance).

My goal wit h t his production is to honor t hose t heatrical styles. Hence our band of traveling players (Compagnia Gelosi Zanni) who have alighted in Alexandria, VA, to take you on a journey from t he romantic, rose-colored-glasses dreamscape of yout h to t he reality and realism of maturity. Join us as a starry, moonlit adventure is conjured, but, as t hey say in t he play, “t he night is only half t he day.” Join us to learn what happens when t he sun comes up and reality sets back in and provides some life lessons some poignant, some amusing about t he nature of real love and true romance. Because, as Jones and Schmidt so eloquently tell us, wit hout a hurt, t he heart is hollow.

SHOW SYNOPSIS

The Fantasticks is a story about love, romance, disillusion, and happiness It takes place anywhere, anytime and involves t he machinations of two neighbors to create a love story between t heir children. A romantic, moonlit adventure is conjured, but, as t hey say in t he play, “t he night is only half t he day.” What happens when t he sun comes up and reality sets back in provides some life lessons some poignant, some amusing about t he nature of real love and true romance. This story is a moving tale of young lovers who become disillusioned, only to discover a more mature, meaningful love, and is punctuated by a bountiful series of catchy, memorable songs, many of which have become classics.

Rachel Hogan (Luisa) is over t he moon to be working wit h t his divine cast and crew on her first show wit h LTA! Rachel is a Lebanon Valley College alumna and graduated wit h degrees in music and psychology. Her favorite roles include Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress, Kate in Kiss Me, Kate, and Carmen in Curtains Rachel t hanks her friends, co -workers, and family and dedicates t his performance to her late grandfat her, Richard Stockstill, because wit hout his love and encouragement, she would not be here

Fred Lash (Henry) is extremely pleased to be back wit h The Fantasticks after appearing as Hucklebee in LTA’s production in 1990 Toget her wit h director Frank Shutts, choreographer Grace Machanic, and producer Mary Bet h Smit h-Toomey, a show came toget her t hat has stood t he test of time. Fred dedicates his performance to Donna, his life partner of more t han 50 years, wit hout whom he never could have made it t his far. This is Fred’s 10t h role on t he LTA stage.

Matt Liptak (Mortimer) is very excited to return to t he LTA stage. Notable roles in t he DMV include Bobby in Company (MCP), Patsy in Spamalot (LTA, WATCH nominee), Riff Raff in The Rocky Horror Show (LTA award winner), Bobby in TAP’s Urinetown, and Nicky/Trekkie/Bad-Idea Bear in Avenue Q (LTA, WATCH nominee). Liptak t hanks his family and loved ones for t heir constant support and dedicates his performance in The Fantasticks to his Grandma Madeline.

Luis “Matty” Montes (Matt) is delighted to be making his LTA debut in The Fantasticks, having mainly performed in t he Baltimore area. His favorite past roles include: Man 1 in Songs for a New World (Spotlighters Theatre), Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar (Just O ff Broadway), JD in Heathers (Stand Up for Theatre) and Edward Bloom in Big Fish (Silhouette Stages)

Christopher Overly (El Gallo) is ecstatic to be treading t he boards wit h LTA for t he first time He has performed in, directed, and choreographed many shows (musicals, ballets, and operas) in t he area and internationally He played Munkustrap in Cats (Roadside), Molokov in Chess (KAT), Fat her in Children of Eden (2nd Star), Bobby in Company (PTP) and Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd (Roadside), to name a few. He would like to t hank his amazing wife and children for t heir unflagging support in his pursuit of t heater.

Ilyana Rose (Boy Mute) is t hrilled to be making her debut at LTA. Ilyana was last seen as Valentine de Villefort in The Count of Monte Cristo (ACCT) and as Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (MCP). She is an Eckerd College graduate wit h a BFA in t heater. She is currently a scenic carpentry apprentice, ASM and videographer at Keegan Theatre and has worked on many shows t here, including Top Girls and Lincolnesque. Ilyana dedicates her performance to her loving and supportive friends and family.

Lauren Sutton (Girl Mute) is excited to make her LTA debut in The Fantasticks. Past credits include Eugenie Danglars in The Count of Monte Cristo (ACCT), Hippolyta/Peaseblossom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (MCP), Nurse in Romeo and Juliet (Tidewater Community Players) and de Bonnefoi in The Imaginary Invalid (Mason Players). Lauren is working toward her BFA in t heater performance at George Mason University She would like to t hank her family and friends for t heir love and support

Stephen P. Yednock (Bellomy) is excited to perform his LTA debut This is his second time in The Fantasticks after appearing in MAD’s production a s M

Janice Zucker (Hucklebee) is t hrilled to be back at LTA after appearing as Frieda in The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife t hree years ago. O t her favorites include Yente in Fiddler on the Roof (SMP), Big Mama in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (SMP), Mot her Superior in Nunsense (VTC), Bubbe in Crossing Delancey (VTC) and Elsa in The Sound of Music (SMP). Meet the Cr ew

Tina Anderson (Assistant Producer) loves being back in “learning mode” to help stage t his fun and fantastical show for her favorite community t heater. She has worked in front of and behind local area stages for many years since graduating from State University of New York at Plattsburgh wit h a degree in Speech and Theatre. Tina appreciates t he opportunity to work wit h two of t he most seasoned LTA producers, Rance Willis and Sharon Field. She enjoys t his cast and crew and all she has soaked up from director Eleanore Tapscott!

Luana Bossolo (Set Painting Design) has been painting sets at LTA for eight years. Past shows include Rabbit Hole, A Christmas Carol (2011), The Full Monty, Spamalot, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Fabulous Lipitones, The Audience and Harvey. She has also worked on wardrobe and as assistant producer for several LTA productions. She is delighted to be working wit h director Eleanore Tapscott and an amazingly talented crew.

Marzanne Claiborne (Lighting Design) is pleased to be designing lights for The Fantasticks Favorite designs include Driving Miss Daisy (WATCH nomination for Lighting Design), To Kill a Mockingbird (LTA award winner for Excellence in Lighting Design), Dirty Blonde, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, Steel Magnolias, Key for Two and The Fabulous Lipitones, all at LTA; and A Streetcar Named Desire at TAP Marzanne most recently directed Enchanted April at ACCT Many t hanks to Pam Leonowich for being t he master electrician for t his show

Sherry Clarke (Co -Stage Manager) first “dabbled in t he arts” wit h t he typical childhood neighborhood plays. In her late teens, she experienced high school/college plays and musicals, starting a gratifying 13-year career as a vocalist based out of Seattle. In Alexandria, she discovered a new home in which to explore her t heatrical roots by way of t he wonderful local community t heaters. Sherry is pleased to be working under t he talented direction of Eleanore Tapscott and her extraordinary visions t hat make her directing unique and wonderful.

Juliana Cofrancesco (Costume Design and Construction) is excited to work on t his fantastic show! Michael deBlois (Set Design/Photographer) is pleased to return to LTA Michael’s personal favorite LTA set design was for a highly representational set for West Side Story wit h his good friend, t he late Dick Gomersall He appreciates t he freedom LTA gives its designers, t he quality of t he actors and tech crews, and especially t he support LTA provides to bring what are sometimes difficult designs to reality. He works for several ot her t heaters but always has a special appreciation of t he good people here in Alexandria.

Charles Dragonette (Set Decoration/Co -Properties Design) is happy to be back at LTA, again working wit h Eleanore’s vision, dressing a less demanding set t han t he delightful Anne of Green Gables and cheerier than August: Osage County. He also recently decorated t he sets for Death by Design, Enchanted April and The Count of Monte Cristo at ACCT, for t he last of which he also designed t he props.

Jason A. Ellis (Choreographer/Stage Combat Choreographer) hails from Jamaica and has been involved in t he arts for several decades. He is currently a WATCH representative for Hard Bargain Players and chairs t he Yout h Arts Festival Committee for t he City of Alexandria He serves as a choreographer for many local community t heaters He furt her supports the arts through his nonprofit, Momentum Collective Inc (wwwmomentumcinc org) Jason t hanks t he director for t he opportunity to flex his creative muscles and work wit h such an amazing cast at t he historic LTA t heater

Sharon Field (Co -Producer) has co -produced for LTA since 2006 The Fantasticks represents her eight h show producing wit h Rance Willis and t he first time wit h Tina Anderson. She’s t hrilled to be working wit h an amazing cast, talented creative team and t he absolute best designers and crew around. The Fantasticks was t he first show she ever worked on at TAP back in 1976, and she t hanks LTA for t his opportunity to work on it again. Special t hanks to her “home” team, Ron, Crissy, Tom, Scott and Nick.

Nick Friedlander (Co -Properties Design) is excited to be backstage again after his most recent stint on t he administrative side as a co -producer for Dracula (LTA). O t her recent tech roles include co -lighting for A Christmas Carol (2018 LTA) and co -stage manager for How I Learned to Drive (DS). He would like to t hank Rance, Sharon and Tina for all t heir patience and understanding, Charlie for being one heck of a co -designer, and his family and friends for t heir love and support.

Jim Hutzler (Co -Set Construction) has worked on many LTA sets as master carpenter and set construction crew, often alongside his wife, Mary, as set painter. Recent WATCH nominations wit h co -builder Jeff Nesmeyer include To Kill a Mockingbird in 2016 and Anything Goes in 2017 Jim and Jeff are also humble recipients of t he 2017-18 LTA Outstanding Set Construction award for Harvey LTA’s magic comes from t he countless hours t hat people contribute to make t hese shows possible

Pam Leonowich (Master Electrician) has been climbing t he light ladders at LTA for over 13 years and is proud to follow in her mot her’s t heater footsteps Her mot her managed and designed productions for t he troops during World War II wit h t he British Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). She is pleased to be teaming again wit h lighting designer Marzanne and our fabulously dedicated light crew.

Jeff Nesmeyer (Co -Set Construction) is pleased to be working at LTA once again and sharing t he duties of master carpenter wit h Jim Hutzler. This is Jeff ’ s sevent h venture as co -master carpenter at LTA. Jeff and Jim have built sets for To Kill a Mockingbird, Spamalot, A Christmas Carol, Anything Goes, The Fabulous Lipitones, Anne of Green Gables, Harvey and Dracula. Eleanore Tapscott (Director) is a classically trained actress and director. Directing credits include The Count of Monte Cristo and The Judicial Murder of Mrs. Surratt (ACCT); Harvey (MCP); A Christmas Carol, Key for Two, Caught in the Net, I’m Not Rappaport and Noises Off (LTA); Fabulation, Coming Home and Blues for an Alabama Sky (PCP); Arcadia and School for Scandal (TAP); and Proposals and The Universal Language (RCP). Next project: Bus Stop (ACCT) in t he spring of 2019. Thanks to t he creative team, cast and crew!

Rance Willis (Co -Producer) has, since 2007, co -produced The Philadelphia Story, 1776, Gypsy, Company, Woman in Black, Ragtime and God of Carnage at LTA and all wit h Sharon Field His first LTA production was Something’s Afoot, co -produced wit h David Hale, wit h whom he produced several other shows Rance has also stage managed numerous shows He served as LTA President from 1983 to 1985 and currently serves on t he Board of Financial Trustees

Robin Worthington (Hair/Makeup Design/Wardrobe) is delighted to support t his production of The Fantasticks A veteran wardrobe mistress, she has added creative hair and makeup design to her repertoire to assist t he cast as t hey develop t heir new personae. Special t hanks to producers Willis, Field and Anderson for giving her t his opportunity to work again wit h director Eleanore Tapscott, who has combined her artistic vision and passion wit h a talented cast and crew to create t his beautiful love story for t he LTA audience to enjoy. Alan Wray (Sound Design) is excited to be doing sound for t his production wit h Eleanore Tapscott. Alan has designed sound for various LTA productions and ot her t heaters. Most recently he designed LTA’s August: Osage County, Ragtime, Picnic (WATCH nomination), Rabbit Hole, Harvey and Widdershins (LTA award). For TAP he designed She Loves Me and The Seagull (WATCH nomination), and for Dominion Stage he designed Spring Awakening and The Boys in the Band (WATCH nomination). He has produced many shows, including LTA’s Caught in the Net, which Eleanore also directed.

Welcome to t he “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species t hat figured prominently in t he Bard’s writings We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!

The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 80 members t hat supports t he t heatre wit h special contributions While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for t he Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables t hroughout t he t heatre, brass plates for sponsored t heatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over t he years, and many varied technical enhancements, including automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from t he Council have exceeded $215,000 The Council conducts t hree business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of t he best community t heatres in America today!
