Welcome to t he Little Theatre of Alexandria’s production of A Christmas Carol 2018. We are pleased to present Donna Ferragut’s adaptation of Dickens’ beloved tale—a version I had t he privilege of viewing as an audience member in 2006 I had my two young daughters wit h me at t he time and remember being struck by its quick pace, smoot h scene transitions, traditional English carols, outstanding visual production elements and special effects. I marveled at t he show’s balance of rich detail and original text in t he framework of a family-friendly production t hat held t he interest of t he inevitably mixed-age crowd

Unforgettable images and characters fill t he stage in t he story of t he embittered a n t i h e ro , Eb e n ez e r S cro o g e . Al o ng wi t h S cro o g e , t h e

e admittance into t he kitchens, drawing rooms and streets of Victorian England. We follow Scrooge’s journey of discovery in which t he Spirits reveal to him scenes t hat we humans are not normally privileged to witness or repeat: viewing one ’ s past, being a fly on t he wall at a nephew’s Christmas party, visiting lost loves or watching one ’ s neighbors respond to one ’ s own deat h Because of t he unique plot structure of a worst-case scenario followed by a shot at redemption, Dickens l e av e s u s n o t wi t h d e sp a ir b u t wi t h a l e ss

transformation. Dickens pulls out all t he literary and t hematic stops in his novella of lasting consequence. Inevitably, audience members examine t heir own hearts to ask if we are, indeed, living t he correct sort of life, or if we have perhaps lost our direction somewhere along t he way.
