The Audience

writtenby Peter Morgan producedby Rebecca Sheehy and Russell Wyland directedby Ruben Vellekoop

From the writer of the critically acclaimed Netflix drama, The Crown, playwright Peter Morgan takes you behind the scenes of Buckingham Palace. For the past 60 years, Queen Elizabeth has met with each of her 12 prime ministers in private, weekly meetings at Buckingham Palace. Both parties of the meetings agree to never repeat what is said in these private “audiences.”

From Churchill to Margaret Thatcher, Morgan imagines what these meetings would be like as they span decades of the Queen’s reign. Join us as we peer into the woman behind the crown and the moments that have formed the modern monarchy.

Director’s Notes

Think orphan, romance, friendship, small town, adoption and loss and you have Anne of Green Gables –The Musical, the heartwarming, charming iconic story by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It is the longest-running annual production in Canadian history but has rarely been seen here in the nation’s capital. A horse, carriage and endless theatrical drops are a tall order for any community theater, but with a little imagination and mixed media, this musically lush and youthfully energetic musical has reached fruition here at LTA. Endless film and television productions of Montgomery’s books, the most recent Anne With an E, are disparate in tone and content. However, it is Don Harron and Norman Campbell’s 1965 musical that best captures this wholesome, imaginative, breezy tale of a young orphan girl who rose from destitution to happiness in the farm country, entirely by virtue of her pluck and personality. “I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that’s me,” wrote Maya Angelou. That could just as easily been said by Anne of Green Gables a century earlier. Montgomery was well ahead of her time. Ennobling the richness of Montgomery’s text, many nonspoken subtleties of the novel are present in our production. For the Anne of Green Gables devotee, this is a treasure trove of memories. Finally, to Elizabeth Thelma Thornton, a little red-haired girl who was abandoned by her mother at age 5 and placed in an orphanage, thank you, Mom.

Based on the classic novel by L.M. Montgomery, this heart-warming musical takes place at the turn of the 20th century, when a brother and sister decide to adopt an orphan boy for help on their farm, Green Gables. The “boy” turns out to be Anne Shirley, who quickly charms her new parents and communitywith her fun spirit and comical adventures.

Time Period and Setting: 1900-1910. The story is set in Avonlea, a tiny village in Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province.

Mary Ferrara (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) is happy to be back in Old Town after 30 years living and working in theater in Los Angeles. Since her return last year, she has worked props for A Party to Murder and ASM for Anything Goes, The Fabulous Lipitones, Driving Miss Daisy and A Christmas Carol.

Michelle Hall (Co-Assistant Stage Manager) is delighted to be joining LTA again for this show. She has worked other shows at LTA as props designer, front of house volunteer and assistant stage manager. Before working with LTA, she was involved in many aspects of university and community theater both on and off stage. Thank you to Mike, Alan and Robert for this opportunity and to her family for their support of her crazy dreams!

Jim Hutzler (Co-Set Construction) has enjoyed carpentry, set painting and stage operations, having worked on many shows at LTA and other theaters in Northern Virginia. LTA is very fortunate to have many hard-working volunteers that make this quality community theater possible.

Mary Hutzler (Set Design) has worked behind the scenes in many productions at LTA, PCP and ACCT. Jennifer Lyman (Co-Lighting Design) has a bachelor’s degree in media and theater arts and has been active in community theater for over 20 years. She has done a little bit of everything at LTA, from producing shows like Plaza Suite , Intimate Apparel and Scrooge: the Musical to stage managing Hairspray and Lend Me a Tenor and directing A Christmas Carol and Dirty Blonde. Past co-lighting design endeavors at LTA include The Sorcerer, I’m Not Rappaport and Hair. If you were paying attention during LTA’s production of Footloose, you even saw her onstage playing Lulu.

Jeff Nesmeyer (Co-Set Construction) is pleased to be working at LTA once again and sharing the duties of master carpenter with Jim Hutzler. Jeff has been set building for the last several years at LTA, and this is his sixth venture as co-master carpenter. Meet the Crew (continued)

Michael Page (Co-Lighting Design) is excited to be a part of his fourth production with LTA, having fight-choreographed To Kill a Mockingbird and A Party to Murder . Also, 11 years ago, he was on the LTA stage as a wrangler in The Will Rogers Follies. He has a B.A. in theater and dance with a focus in light design from CNU and is a certified actor combatant. He has designed lights for Any Given Monday and Gilligan’s Fire Island (DS) and has choreographed/fight choreographed shows at ACCT, LTA, MCP and DS. Michael teaches dance and musical theater classes at LTA, where he is also the summer camp director. He would like to thank the cast, crew, orchestra, and production team for their hard work. And thanks to Jennifer Lyman for this opportunity to co-design lights with her. Enjoy the show!

Leslie Reed (Co-Properties Design) was enchanted by the LTA’s warmth and creative genius the first time she was asked to help with the props of Blithe Spirit A magical door had opened to reveal the world of make-believe fabricated from hard work, imagination, superb talent and a super abundance of cooperation and creativity. Gathering props, creating sets, calling volunteers, researching details, cleaning, sweeping and sewing are all building blocks of a production. Being able to do it in the LTA community is truly a gift.

Rebecca Sheehy (Co-Properties Design) is absolutely delighted to work with co-designer Leslie Reed and the cast and crew of LTA’s Anne of Green Gables –The Musical . Her recent projects include co-properties design for West Side Story and Anything Goes at LTA and Evil Dead at Dominion Stage. Rebecca wants to thank everyone at LTA for being so friendly and to thank her family, friends and all the dedicated volunteers who make these performances so much fun. Enjoy the show.

Kit Sibley and Jean Schlichting (Costume Design) have enjoyed creating the costumes for the characters of this period show. They see them as a cross between the 1900s fashions of the towns and cities and the durable, sensible clothing of the agricultural community. They have costumed many shows at LTA, most recently Legally Blonde, Anything Goes, West Side Story and In the Heights They also costumed ACCT’s The Miracle Worker and The Judicial Murder of Mrs. Surratt and area productions of South Pacific, Shrek: The Musical and Children of Eden. Along the way they have received several LTA Awards and a WATCH Award as well as several WATCH nominations.

Margaret Aiken Snow (Co-Wardrobe) is exhilarated to be working again with our distinguished director, producers, cast and crew and is excitedly anticipating great things in the musical version of Anne of Green Gables – The Musical. Having grown up with this story in book, two movie and stage play formats, participating with the musical version will have her tingling more than her staged presence as an 11-year-old Helen Keller in 1962.

Colin Taylor (Music Director) is thrilled to be making his LTA debut. Colin has music directed several productions in the Northern Virginia area, including 42nd Street, Oliver!, The Music Man and Anything Goes. He has also served as a guest conductor for the Loudoun Symphonic Winds. Colin got his musical theater start in the pit orchestra as a clarinet/saxophone doubler in shows such as Bye Bye Birdie, Crazy for You, Footloose, South Pacific and West Side Story. He would like to thank his teacher, Dr. John Devlin, and the wonderful cast and crew for trusting him with the baton.

Robin Worthington (Co-Wardrobe) is delighted to team up on the wardrobe for Anne of Green Gables – The Musical with Margaret Snow, who introduced her to helping actors through many quick-change challenges behind the LTA scenes in productions of In the Heights, Grey Gardens, To Kill a Mockingbird, Anything Goes, Legally Blonde, Driving Miss Daisy, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, and A Christmas Carol . A retired FDA scientist and Georgetown professor, Robin thanks Tina Anderson for expanding her repertoire by introducing her to the dramatic life of LTA.

Alan K. Wray (Co-Producer) is excited to be working with this production along with Robert and Michael. It is exciting to watch the directors, cast and crew develop all the material into a wonderful show. Alan co-produced with Robert The Curious Savage (PCP), All the King’s Women and A Party to Murder at LTA, and he co-produced Caught in the Net with Dick Schwab. Typically Alan has been found doing sound designs, with the most recent being Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.

Russell Wyland (Rigging) has been a member of LTA for 25 years and has served the theater in several capacities, such as Chairman of the Sound Department, head of the Selection Committee, and is currently the President. In the meantime, he will continue hanging curtains (rigging), as he has for every show for at least the past decade.

Imaginary friends can be whoever — or whatever — you want them to be, even a six and a half-foot tall rabbit. When Elwood starts introducing his imaginary rabbit friend, Harvey, to guests at a party, his sister can no longer tolerate his inebriated antics and worries about her family being exposed to this imaginary rabbit. Come Play With Us!

There are many ways to be involved with The Little Theatre of Alexandria!

Volunteers are an important aspect of LTA. There are many opportunities to be a part of LTA with a variety of events and times! All are welcome to participate regardless of experience.

LTA is one of the oldest community theatres in the Washington D.C. area thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. A successful stage production requires many volunteers working behind the scenes before and during the run of the show. Everyone performing in and nearly everyone you see working on an LTA show is a volunteer. As a volunteer community theatre group, LTA welcomes anyone interested in becoming involved. There are lots of opportunities at LTA, for all experience levels! So, come play with us.

For more information visit our website www.thelitletheatre.com and click on “Volunteer”, or call the business office at 703-683-5778.

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!

The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 80 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including exterior defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
