Director’s Notes

Aaron Sorkin began writing A Few Good Men on napkins while working as a bartender at Broadway’s Palace Theatre. Since its humble beginning on napkins, it has become one of the most indelible plays in American theatre and a box office smash in Hollywood. Featuring Sorkin’s lightning-quick wit, richly developed characters and a narrative that delivers audiences through the depths of despair to the jubilation of triumph, A Few Good Men is both a theatrical and cinematic gem that has won its place in the highest echelons of American dramatic storytelling.

Inspired by real events, A Few Good Men recounts the murder of Pfc. William Santiago at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba, and the events leading up to the trial of the assailants, Lance Cpl. Harold Dawson and Pfc. Louden Downey. Yet the lawyers responsible for defending Dawson and Downey—Lt. J.G. Daniel Kaffee, Lt. Cmdr. Joanne (Jo) Galloway and Lt. J.G. Sam Weinberg—discover in their investigation that the circumstances surrounding Santiago’s murder are not as straightforward as they seem. Kaffee, Galloway and Weinberg soon realize that in order to defend their clients, they must fight Colonel Jessep and the web of conspiracy surrounding Santiago’s murder. The culminating trial becomes a Herculean battle for the truth between Kaffee’s legal team of underdogs and the imposing Col. Jessep, who is determined to wield all his power to stop Kaffee and his team from discovering the truth.

The heart of the story within A Few Good Men—seeking the truth amid the fog of conspiracy appealed to me both as a director and as an American citizen. While scandal and conspiracy engulf our government, the drama in A Few Good Men perfectly parallels the political turmoil facing the United States. My overarching goal as the director of A Few Good Men involves establishing parallels between the play’s narrative and our nation’s current political climate, which ultimately inspired the creative choice to set the play in its original setting—the year 1986. Setting the play in our recent past establishes the distance in time that I believe audiences need to draw comparisons between the past and the present in order to discover solutions for the future.

The creative decision for setting the play in 1986 prompted changes in multiple design elements, especially in costuming (the uniforms used in this production have been made to appear consistent with both Navy and Marine uniforms from the mid-1980s) and, perhaps most notably, in casting. While women are a minority among enlisted members of the United States armed forces today, female service members were a rarity back in 1986. In order to portray the deeply patriarchal system and culture that female service members found themselves navigating in 1986 (and, quite frankly, still navigate today), I cast only one female service member: Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway. Lt. Cmdr. Galloway is the only named woman character in the show, and she is the only woman in uniform that audiences will see on stage.

In fact, Lt. Cmdr. Galloway’s journey holds a special place in my heart. My own mother served in the United States Army and was among one of the first classes of women at Texas A&M

2

University to graduate from the Corps of Cadets. While my mother and her sisters in arms served their nation proudly, they faced controversy for simply being women with a desire to serve their country in the armed forces. As a result, they were held to a higher standard than their male counterparts and endured enormous pressure to prove that women belonged in the corps, and in the military. Lt. Cmdr. Galloway’s story is the story of women serving in uniform; therefore, telling her story properly became one of my biggest responsibilities for this production.

As the director for A Few Good Men, I hope audiences will recognize the parallels between the rising resistance in the United States through Lt. J.G. Daniel Kaffee and his team’s struggle for the truth. In addition to my focus on the play’s political themes, my creative team and I set out to honor the U.S. Navy and Marines by accurately depicting military etiquette and protocol to the best of our abilities while ensuring that the story outlined in the script is the story we portray on stage. And finally, I hope audiences enjoy a refreshing production of one of the most iconic plays in American theatre that began with an idea written on bar napkins at Broadway’s Palace Theatre.

SHOW SYNOPSIS

Lt. J.G. Daniel Kaffee, a lawyer in the Navy’s JAG Corps, is assigned to defend two U.S. Marines charged with killing a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. Known for winning plea bargains for his clients, Kaffee seeks reduced sentences for the accused Marines. Yet when another lawyer in the Navy JAG Corps, Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway, proposes to Kaffee that the Marines were following an order given by their commanding officers at Gitmo, Kaffee must decide whether he will settle for a plea bargain or defend his clients’ innocence and uncover a conspiracy led by the commanding officer of the Marine ground forces at Gitmo, the indomitable Col. Jessep.

Time period: 1986

Setting: Various locations in Washington, DC, and on the United States Naval Base in Guantanomo Bay, Cuba

Jared Diallo (Pfc. Louden Downey) is very excited to be able to look like he is in the military without actually needing to run or wake up early. He is also excited to be in his first show with LTA. Recently, he performed in The Wizard of Oz, The Addams Family, Bye Bye Birdie and Seussical. He is a student at Northern Virginia Community College and plans on transferring next year to pursue musical theatre. Jared would like to thank his family and friends for their continued support.

Johnny Goodwin (Tom Dunn/Cpl. Dunn/Lawyer #1/Ensemble) is going into his senior year at George Mason High School. His past work includes an ensemble role in the short film Reunion and playing young Booker T. Washington in the Historical Characters Monologues on Fairfax cable TV. This, however, will be his first time acting on the stage. Johnny hopes to pursue a theatre and film degree when he goes to college next year.

Jeff Haslow (Capt. Matthew A. Markinson) is making his LTA debut and first appearance in the DC area since moving back six years ago. His previous roles include Fredrik (A Little Night Music), John Proctor (The Crucible), Henry Higgins (My Fair Lady), Stine (City of Angels) and Marius (Les Misérables). He has performed in an improv troupe and directed productions including favorites Our Town, Blithe Spirit and The Miracle Worker. Thank you to a great cast and to Marty for keeping our life on the rails while I tackled this role.

Patrick Hogan (Military Police Officer/Sergeant at Arms/Ensemble) served as a sergeant in the USMC in 15 countries. He was an extra in two films shot in the DC metro area: The Sentinel and Flags of Our Fathers. He was also in the one-act play Jump at LTA and is a voice actor. Patrick would like to thank the staff and LTA for this opportunity and his lovely wife, Kira, and their daughter, Riley, who is also an aspiring actor.

Christian Kampe (Cpl. Jeffrey Owen Howard) is making his LTA debut in A Few Good Men. A theater lover from a very young age, Christian performed in numerous community and school productions in his southern Illinois hometown. Now stationed in the DMV area, he works as a military police officer for the U.S. Air Force and is excited for the opportunity to return to the stage. Christian is thankful for his wife, Emmy, family and friends for their support in this endeavor.

David Kimmelman (Col. Nathan Jessep) is beyond excited to play Col. Jessup in his first appearance with LTA. David recently appeared as Mr. Dussell in The Diary of Anne Frank in Rockville and as Isaac in Disgraced in Greenbelt. A 1981 graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC, he appeared on Days of Our Lives in 1986 and has performed in over 60 plays and musicals nationally. Fred Lash (Capt. Isaac Whitaker) has appeared in 11 productions at what he considers his home base and is most certainly familiar to LTA audiences. On stage recently in August: Osage County and The Fantasticks, he has been nominated for numerous acting awards during the past 30 years. As a retired Marine officer, Fred is extremely proud to be in the cast of this production (even though he is playing a Naval officer!), one of his all-time favorites. He resides in Springfield with his wife of 51 years, Donna.

Robert Montgomery (Cmdr. Walter Stone) is pleased to be in his first production at LTA, and excited to be back on the stage after a hiatus of a few years. A graduate of West Point, he holds an MFA in acting from the University of New Orleans. After many years in the Army, he is excited about the acting challenge of playing “down” as a member of the Navy. He has been seen previously as Ralph (A Christmas Story), Juror #4 (Twelve Angry Men), Fagin (Oliver!), Captain Von Trapp (The Sound of Music), Jake (Jake’s Women), Gremio (The Taming of the Shrew), Antigonus (The Winter’s Tale) and Fabian (Twelfth Night). Robert wishes to thank his wife and kids, without whose support he would not be onstage today.

Craig Morris (Lawyer #2) is a native of Hartford, CT, and an active duty naval officer currently stationed in Washington D.C. at the Washington Navy Yard. After serving 13 years in the Marine Corps Reserve, to include a deployment to Iraq, he graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans where he received his juris doctor in May of 2005, and commissioned in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps in August of 2005. She recently also jointly won her first WATCH set painting award for LTA’s Dracula. She continues to paint sets and teach adult basic set painting classes and a variety of other activities for LTA.

Krista White (Sound Design) is excited to be taking the lead on sound design with her first show, A Few Good Men. She regularly takes trips to NYC and Broadway to see the shows there, but she could not be happier with the wonderful quality of a theater like the Little Theatre of Alexandria, so close to home.

Emma Williams (Properties Design) is excited to be props master for her first LTA show. She previously acted in four community theater shows in college. Emma worked as props master for Vienna Theater Company productions of Emilie: La Marquise du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight, Peter Pan and Ripcord as well as designing props and costumes for the short film The Audition. She is most excited that antiques are cool again.

Robin Worthington (Wardrobe Coordinator) is delighted to support LTA’s production of A Few Good Men. A veteran wardrobe mistress, she is excited to work with a terrific wardrobe crew. Robin also serves as LTA’s Co-Chair of the Costume Closet Team, curating donated and created sartorial treasures to dress LTA’s performances, as well as lending LTA costumes to other area theaters, schools and nonprofits.

Russell Wyland (Rigging) has dressed sets for and produced several LTA productions, including Hairspray, The Full Monty, Avenue Q, 33 Variations, The Underpants and A Fox on the Fairway. He is the winner of several LTA and WATCH awards for set decoration, special effects and producing. Russ’ specialty and first love, however, is rigging, and he has been hanging curtains, signs and chandeliers at LTA for almost 25 years.

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!

The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 70 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
