LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine SNMA Newsletter

Mission Statement Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.

SNMA chapters based at allopathic and osteopathic medical schools throughout the nation, and some colleges, implement our programs and activities locally. SNMA programs are designed to serve the health needs of underserved communities and communities of color. In addition, SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring that medical education and services are culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse populations and to increasing the number of African-American, Latino, and other students of color entering and completing medical school.

A Letter From the Co-Presidents: The LSU -Health New Orleans Chapter of The Student National Medical Association would like to wish you a Happy New Year!

We are excited about bringing in the New Year, but more so about the list of great events and activities we have in store for this semester. As students of the LSU and New Orleans communities, we have created a schedule of events that like the SNMA mission, aim to serve our students, our community and increase the number of culturally and socially competent physicians.

This semester, we have a vast array of both community service and social events.

Whether you are interested in participating in outreach at the local high schools or taking blood pressures within the local community, or gaining the knowledge necessary to reduce healthcare disparities, we encourage everyone to come and participate. Only through us all working together can we really impact change! If you are looking to volunteer with us, or have general comments/concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Amber Jarrell Amber Jarrell is a second year medical student at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She is a native of Baker, Louisiana. Amber received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, LA. She enjoys participating in student organizations.

Amber serves as the Vice President of the Pediatric Interest Group, Secretary of the Student National Medical Association, a member of the Independent Student Analysis Committee for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), mentor with Tiger Cubs, and a S.M.I.L.E buddy with the Students Making It a Little Easier Project. S.M.I.L.E is a volunteer program in collaboration with Children's Hospital, LSU Medical School, and the American Cancer Society which focuses on pediatric oncology patients.

Sharis Steib Sharis Steib is a native of Vacherie, Louisiana and is currently a second year medical student at LSUHSC New Orleans School of Medicine. She received a BS in Biological Engineering from LSU where she also held the esteemed position of LA-STEM Research Scholar and was recognized as a member of The Tiger 12. Upon graduation, she spent a year teaching elementary mathematics in a rural LA community. At LSUHSC SOM, Sharis currently holds the position of President of the Tiger Cubs Program, a mentorship program committed to empowering youth through developing their senses of health awareness, leadership, community-minded service, and academic success. She also completed the 2016 AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana Summer Health Policy Fellowship in Washington, DC in the office of Senator Bill Cassidy, and is currently conducting research in the pulmonary department under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew Lammi.

Keyana F. Varnado Keyana F. Varnado is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and is currently a second year medical student at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She earned a BS in Cell and Molecular Biology and a BSM in Marketing from Tulane University in 2015. She was a 2016 Nth Dimensions/AAOS Orthopaedic Summer Internship Scholar, mentored by Dr. William T. Long of the Orthopaedic Computer Surgery Institute. In Los Angeles, CA. She currently holds leadership positions in the Student National Medical Association, Christian Medical Dental Association, Tiger Cubs and LSU ProtĂŠgĂŠs.

Chelsey Walker Chelsey Walker is a native of New Orleans where she is currently matriculating through LSU School of Medicine. In May 2015, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Xavier University of Louisiana with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. At Xavier, she majored in biology and minored in chemistry. She also earned Honors in Theology.

While attending Xavier University, Chelsey researched epilepsy and glioblastomas under the supervision of Alberto Musto MD, PhD, Om Prakash PhD, and Nicolas Bazan, MD, PhD. Her research was published in Scientific Reports, PLOS one, and Neoplasia. The articles published in each journal are respectively “Dysfunctional epileptic neuronal circuits and dysmorphic dendritic spines are mitigated by platelet-activating factor receptor antagonism”, “Hippocampal neuro-networks and dendritic spine perturbations in epileptogenesis are attenuated by neuroprotectin d1”, and “Therapeutic efficacy of aldoxorubicin in an intracranial xenograft mouse model of human glioblastoma.”

Chelsey is a proud alumnus of Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies where she earned her high school diploma in 2011. Currently, in her second year of medical school, Chelsey aspires to use her research background and her medical education to heal and benefit the quality of life of her future patients.

B.S. Katherine Davidson-Karlay B.S. Katherine Davidson Karlay is a second year medical student with an extensive history in serving underserved communities nationwide and abroad. She is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, LA. She also received a post baccalaureate certificate in Pre-Medicine from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Currently, she serves as the Co-Director for the New Orleans Women’s and Children’s Shelter Outreach Program. She is also a 2016-2017 Albert Schweitzer Fellow, where she expands her skillset of creating health interventions for underserved populations. As a GE-NMF Primary Care Leadership Program Scholar, she worked to develop an asthma education video at Watts Health Center in Los Angeles, CA—improving patients and their families’ knowledge of asthma and increasing medication adherence for asthmatics. The National Medical Fellows selected the project to be presented at the National Symposium in Chicago, where she was selected ‘Scholar of the Month’ and the video was released for nationwide use. Katherine also serves as the SNMA Co-President for LSUHSC New Orleans SOM and a mentor for LSU Tiger Cubs. Katherine was a 2015-2016 LAMMICO Merit Scholar and is a 2015-2019 Rural Scholar.

Michael Okoronkwo Michael Okoronkwo is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and is currently a second year medical student at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He was a studentathlete at Nicholls State University and graduated with a BS in General Studies in 2009. He completed a self directed post-bacc at Southern University at New Orleans from 2011-2014. He is currently a SNMA Co-Vice President of Community Affairs, a Tiger Cubs mentor and a member of the Lifestyles in Medicine group. He also completed the 2016 AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana Summer Health Policy Fellowship in Washington, DC with the US House of Representatives, Energy and Commerce Committee-Subcommittee of Health. As a second year student, he has been involved in many exciting and innovative activities outside of the classroom, his favorite being the various outreach efforts sewing into the lives of youth in the New Orleans community.

To Whom It May Concern, We greet you from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine New Orleans chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). SNMA was established in 1964 as an independent, student-run organization to address the concerns and needs for medical students of color. SNMA programming focuses on underserved communities and communities of color in efforts to promote health awareness and healthier lifestyles.

Our chapter exemplifies the national goals and mission at the medical school level and in the New Orleans community. Our activities include: providing educational panel discussions and lecture topics for our entire student body, providing health fairs to members of the community who do not have access to healthcare, collaborating with other affinity groups such as Asian Pacific-American Medical Student Association (APAMSA), and LGBTQ and Ally Organization for Cultural Understanding in the Health Sciences (LOCUS) to improve the medical school experience for minority groups, mentorship of incoming medical students planning to serve at-risk communities, mentorship of high school and college students of color and taking part in walks and a plethora of service activities to help promote health and wellness in the city of New Orleans.

Our chapter is continually striving to be a positive force in the New Orleans community. We feel it is imperative to address the need for culturally competent and service-oriented physicians in training. We are implementing several of SNMA’s national initiatives as well as creating projects to increase cultural competency among medical students.

Throughout the spring and fall semester, we will host “Disparities in Medicine”: a series designed with both speakers and relevant films. The aim of this series is to expose students to understanding the inequalities that occur or have occurred in the provisions and access to healthcare. In addition to this series, we have collaborated with the First 72+ to host a health fair each year for the formally incarcerated individuals in New Orleans, who face some of the greatest health disparities.

As student physicians, we strongly believe that learning about leadership opportunities in medicine and wholeheartedly providing services to those who are often marginalized are critical to our future in healthcare. In an effort to be able to do so, we are organizing several fundraising events to help supplement the costs, but we do need your help.

We are seeking financial sponsorship to help fund our panel and lecture discussions, health fair, Black History Month programs, pre-medical student mock interviews, and attendance at the Annual Medical Education conference. By supporting our cause, you will have the opportunity to potentially influence the lives and careers of multiple medical students. We greatly appreciate your consideration and support. Message to LSU SNMA Alumni:: My name is Markeiya Polite and I am a fourth year medical student and current SNMA member.

I want to highlight the importance of SNMA and maintaining such a distinguished organization.

Throughout my time at LSU, SNMA was instrumental in offering support and encouragement needed to make a successful transition to medical school. It is truly great to have SNMA Alumni that continue to give back to the current SNMA students in a variety of ways. It is our hope that we will be able to gain the participation of more SNMA Alumni as the organization continues to grow, for this is the only way to continue the successful matriculation of minority medical students much like myself.

We are hoping that SNMA Alumni from LSU-New Orleans will submit their professional information to our LSU/SNMA alumni database. We want to keep in contact with our alumni, so that we can update all of you on all of the service and mentoring opportunities that are hosted by our SNMA Chapter. There are endless programs and projects that we would love for more of our SNMA Alumni to participate in with all of us. I do know that upon graduating in the next few months, I will take the pledge to give back to an organization that has given me so much!

Angellica Octavia Gordon was born in San Antonio, TX and raised in Flint, MI. She attended Tulane University in New Orleans, LA after graduating from Grand Blanc Community High School. As an undergraduate student, she held several leadership positions with campus organizations such as the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the African American Women’s Society. Angellica graduated from Tulane University in May of 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and a minor in Psychology. Angelica continued her studies at Tulane, receiving her Master of Science in Neuroscience degree in May of 2015 and joining the Nu Rho Psi National Honor Society.

Following graduation from her master’s program, Angellica began her year of service as a Tulane AmeriCorps VISTA Fellow at the Broadmoor Improvement Association in New Orleans, LA. She is served at the Broadmoor Arts and Wellness Center as the Wellness VISTA.

She graduated Cum Laude with Honors in History from Xavier University of Louisiana with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and History. While at Xavier, De’Angelica was also a member of the Gold Star Dance Team and Peer Dean Association. She was a General Chemistry Drill Instructor, writing and physics tutor, and a mentor for the Biomedical Scholar Summer Program. She participated in the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program at LSUHSCShreveport doing Multiple Sclerosis research in the Neuro-Radiology Department.

After graduating from Xavier University De’ Angelica taught high school Algebra II/Algebra II Honors along with ACT Preparatory Class and Special Education. She was also the high school Student Council Advisor and the coach of the high school dance team. As a teacher, she headed and assisted with numerous leadership and community service activities. Currently, De’ Angelica is a member of SNMA and Tiger Cubs.

On the Shoulders of Giants:

Dr. Thelma Coffey Boutte, born on February 1911 in New Orleans, was the first black woman to practice medicine in New Orleans. She graduated from Xavier Preparatory School in 1927, Crane College in 1930, and Meharry Medical College in 1934. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., she and nine other sorors volunteered in AKA sponsored health clinics in the Mississippi Delta and served over fifteen hundred family groups. She then completed her internship at the Flint-Goodridge Hospital in New Orleans and her residency at the Provident Hospital in Chicago. Throughout the 1930s, Flint-Goodridge Hospital was the only program in the state offering internships to black physicians. She returned to New Orleans in 1937, where she began private practice and served on the staff of Flint-Goodridge Hospital. Throughout her successful medical career she delivered several thousand babies and provided care for their mothers. Dr. Coffey died in June of 1991 at the age eighty, but her legacy lives on through the great black physicians who have lived, trained, and/or served in the New Orleans community.

Many of our SNMA members presented their research at the annual LSUHSC Medical Student Research Day. Our SNMA Secretary, Amber Jarrell, was selected as the third place winner of the 2016 Medical Student Research Day. Amber’s summer research project was entitled “Influence of individualized step goals on children’s weight change in a comprehensive, familybased weight management intervention”.

Janae’ E. Miller

is a native of Baton Rouge, LA and a product of Baton Rouge Mag-

net High school where she graduated within three years. Upon completion, she went on to attend Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge. Janae’ was a Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-LAMP) Scholar. While majoring in Chemistry with a minor in Pre-medicine, she was very active in her department serving as President of the Chemistry Club Organization and facilitated restarting the Minority Association of PreMedical Students (MAPS) chapter where she served as President. She was also nominated and finished as 1st Runner Up for the University’s Chancellor’s Scholar Award.

After graduating from Southern University as Student Marshall for the College of Sciences, she attended Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, Post-Baccalaureate Program receiving a Certificate in Health Sciences. While there, she was heavily involved in the College’s Community health fairs and Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center studying patient satisfaction and outcomes in an outpatient setting.

In the fall of 2014, she started medical school at LSU Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC), New Orleans. While here, she has been active in various organizations and outreach activities including serving as the co-VP of Social Affairs for the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) Chapter, an active member in Edgar Hull Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine Interest group, participating in Day with the Docs, Dream Center Clinic, a Tiger Cub mentor, and was a participant in the Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program. Upon completion of residency, Janae plans on practicing in primary care.

Our SNMA chapter joined the LSUHSC Student National Dental Association (SNDA), Xavier Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA), & Tulane SNMA for the SNDA hosted “Student Healthcare Professional Mixer” at the Ace Hotel in Downtown New Orleans. It was a great event, where we fellowshipped with other young professionals passionate about the health and progress of our New Orleans community.

Ohh what fun it is to attend a SNMA Holiday Party! Thank you to Dr. Maupin and the OCDE for generously sponsoring our 2016 Holiday Party and Jamie Bolden for hosting the party.

Our SNMA chapter hosted a back to school movie social during MLK Jr. Day weekend to see the film Hidden Figures. The film recounts the story of the African-American mathematician, Katherine Johnson, and her two colleagues, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, who, while working in the segregated West Area Computers division of Langley Research Center, helped NASA catch up in the Space Race. Using their calculations, John Glenn became the first American astronaut to make a complete orbit of Earth. It was great to celebrate the accomplishments of those who paved the way for blacks in STEM.

A Note from the SNMA Faculty Advisor: As health care providers, our greatest responsibility is to strive to address the health inequities which burden our communities. As you have observed in the pages of this newsletter, our school is blessed with a diverse group of talented and committed future physicians who have a passion for service.

We are at the midpoint of this academic year and thus far our students in various ways have left their mark on this community through a full range of outreach efforts, all while demonstrating excellence in their studies.

This spring a number of our students will serve as mentors with our Tiger Cubs middle school student mentorship program. This summer a number will work as student facilitators with our newly awarded, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded pre-health academic enrichment grant – Summer Health Professions Education Program, which will host 80 prehealth students from around the nation.

This continues to be an exciting year, and I ask that for you as alumni, faculty, and physician leaders to embrace and support our students, and serve as their mentors as they continue to develop into the next generation of healthcare leaders for our state.
