Letters F Message from Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis in honour of the 160th anniversary of the London School of Jewish Studies I am delighted to extend a hearty Mazal Tov and warmest congratulations to all the trainees who have successfully completed the LSJS teacher training programme in this very special 160th anniversary year.

Over the last 160 years, many graduates of Jews' College have gone on to make a significant contribution to Anglo-Jewish congregations, to British society and the wider Jewish world. In previous generations, Jews' College was the principal source of religious leadership for Orthodox congregations in the UK, as well as “exporting” rabbis to many Commonwealth countries. Well over half of the Jewish Chaplains in the Second World War who comforted fighting soldiers and assisted them to follow their faith in the most difficult of circumstances were Jews' College graduates.

In 1999, Jews' College was rebranded as the London School of Jewish Studies and started to shift its focus towards becoming a hub of academic study and lifelong learning, attracting outstanding educators and catering to large numbers. Today, under the leadership of the Dean, Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum, some fifty teachers currently provide adult education courses and degree programmes and, of course, as this year’s graduates will attest, LSJS can be proud of a wonderful teacher training programme. I extend, as well, hearty congratulations to the JTTP, the only accredited Jewish teacher training provider in the country.

In congratulating our successful graduates on their excellent achievements, I wish them continued success as they take up teaching positions in our community schools. Like the countless educators in whose footsteps they follow, they will certainly make a substantial contribution to the future of Jewish education.

May all who are partners in the LSJS success story continue lehagdil Torah uleha'adira - to magnify Torah and bring glory to its name.

Message to this year's graduates from Professor Anthony Warrens, Chair of Directors On behalf of the Directors, Advisory Council and staff of LSJS, may I wish you a hearty Mazal Tov. Your commitment and hard work has brought you success in which you should take a legitimate pride. I am delighted that you will contribute not only to education in this country but also to Jewish education in the schools you are working in.Teaching is a fulfilling but challenging vocation and I am sure you will make a difference to every pupil you teach.

I also want to thank the schools who host trainees, and all the staff, mentors and tutors who have helped you achieve so much.

This is a very special year for the London School of Jewish Studies, as we reach the important milestone of our 160th anniversary. It is therefore highly appropriate that we are celebrating your graduation in this superb venue. We are grateful to the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and Council of Middlesex University for making this available to us and for celebrating with us and the many leaders of our various communities who are with us today – physically or in spirit. We are also very grateful for the support of Mr Benjamin Perl MBE, who has been such an inspirational leader of education in the Jewish community.

We hope you very much enjoy the day and look back on it as the very appropriate recognition of a long period of hard work. Mazal Tov again!

Message to this year's graduates from Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum, Dean of LSJS ‫ ונשמח בדברי תלמוד תורתך‬,‫ה' אלוקינו… נשיח בחקיך‬ ‫ כי הם חיינו וארך ימינו‬,‫ובמצותיך לעולם ועד‬ “Lord our God… we will speak of Your laws, and rejoice in Your Torah and Your commands forever; for they are our life and the length of our days” (Evening Prayer Service) What is ‘Jewish’ about Jewish education? At first glance you might think that it is a subject like any other. Just as a school curriculum has subject areas in the sciences such as Mathematics and Chemistry, and in the arts such as English and History, so there are subject areas in religion such as Jewish Studies – just another syllabus in a crowded weekly timetable. But you would be wrong.

Jewish education is not simply the study of a body of material – the Torah, our festivals, rituals and traditions. Furthermore, the fact that Jewish education is generally (though not exclusively) directed at Jews is also not its essential element. What makes Jewish education ‘Jewish’ is actually the way we teach. Our faith has a pedagogy that goes back over three millennia.

Our ancestor Moses, who brought us out of slavery in Egypt, is not known to us as our 'Saviour' or as our 'Leader', instead we call him Moshe Rabbeinu – Moses our Teacher. Almost all the voices in the Talmud are rabbis, for as well as being experts in Jewish law they were master teachers.They would travel throughout Israel teaching and explaining our tradition. Our talmudic and midrashic texts record many of their teaching methods including paired study (chavruta), astute inquiry, meaningful metaphors, good humour, inspiring stories, a profound love of questions and a deep commitment and care for every student.

This Jewish way of teaching is infused in all that we do at LSJS. We aim to produce teachers who have Jewish living, practice and values in their blood. More than a job, teaching in a Jewish school is an expression of who they are and what they stand for. That is why I am so thankful and happy to wish a hearty Mazal Tov – congratulations – to all our wonderful graduates. May your teaching transform the lives of your students and may you be a blessing for us all.

Chief Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler, Founder and President of Jews’ College, 1855-1890

Jews' College was established by Chief Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler in order to create a theological institution where young men could be trained as religious leaders in positions across the British Empire. In January 1852, together with Sir Moses Montefiore he held a public meeting to gain support for the idea. Almost four years later, after enduring a series of financial and political hurdles, Chief Rabbi Adler was able to see his vision come alive. It was on Sunday 11 November 1855, in a house in Finsbury Square, that Jews' College was finally opened.

Commitment to Academia Chief Rabbi Adler founded Jews' College with the aim of producing graduates who were not only deeply versed in Jewish scholarship but who also possessed a great wealth of general knowledge. The College curriculum covered a range of topics which included Talmud, Jewish law, history, homiletics, Hebrew, philosophy, science and mathematics.

When the College moved to Tavistock Square, closer to University College London, students were given the opportunity to combine their religious studies with a university degree. In 1904, the University of London started granting an Honours Degree in Hebrew and Aramaic. All those who completed the degree were Jews' College students. Today, LSJS continues to provide strong academic pathways for its students through partnerships with Middlesex University, King's College London and the University of Roehampton.

Training Rabbis and Leaders Jews' College was the first institution to offer ministerial training and rabbinic ordination in the United Kingdom. In 1899 Rabbi Asher Feldman and Rabbi Moses Hyamson were the first be ordained as ministers and both went on to become very accomplished spiritual leaders. In the first part of the 20th Century, four out of five synagogues in the UK were led by Jews' College alumni.

The recent partnership with the Judith Lady Montefiore College has enabled LSJS to continue this tradition, training a new generation of rabbinic leaders for Anglo-Jewry, with ten new ‘homegrown’ rabbis graduating in 2013.

The semicha programme has produced over 150 rabbis, including chief rabbis, dayanim and many who have gone on to lead major communities across the world.

For over a century the college has run courses for both men and women to train and qualify as Jewish Studies teachers.

The first female teachers graduated in 1893, at a time when women's education in the UK was extremely limited. The college has never ceased in its commitment to train both women and men as teachers.

The War Years The importance of the College was particularly felt during the Second World War. During this time approximately 130 of our graduates were serving communities across the British Empire and a further 40 were serving as chaplains in the Armed Forces.

The practical training and compassion they had gained whilst studying at Jews' College was called into action as they supported their communities during this difficult time. Notwithstanding the London Blitz, Jews' College remained open with an unwavering commitment to investing in the future.

The London School of Jewish Studies: Innovation & Change Following the war, the College underwent a period of change and expansion, moving to larger premises in Montagu Place in 1954. In addition to rabbinical studies and degree courses, chazanut courses and more teacher training programmes were now being offered. By the end of the century the College had produced eighty more rabbis, who took up positions in Australia, South Africa, the United States, South America and across the United Kingdom. Famous graduates include Emeritus Spiritual Leader of the Spanish & Portuguese Community, Rabbi Dr Abraham Levy, and Emeritus Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks, who also served as Principal of the College.

Always responsive to changing needs, Jews' College was rebranded in 1999 as the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS), gradually shifting its focus to secure a vibrant future as a centre of innovative lifelong learning courses, academic studies and new teacher training programmes. LSJS has now gained an international reputation, with its teachers and courses reaching thousands of people across the Jewish world. Under the presidency of Chief Rabbi Mirvis and the leadership of its Dean, Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum, LSJS continues to be the premier place in Anglo-Jewry to educate and become educated.

The Marc Weinberg Community Library Combining the best of the old and the new, the Marc Weinberg Library is one of British Jewry's most significant resources. The library holds the historic Jews' College Collection, which contains over 70,000 volumes of Judaica and Hebraica.

The first official record of a library in Jews' College was in 1859, when Lewis Mayer Rothschild donated the library collection which he purchased from the Jews' and General Literary and Scientific Institution. Over the years, the library grew from individual and organisational donations.

Fast forward to 2010, following the passing of Marc Weinberg – a great friend and former trustee of LSJS, it was decided that in his memory we would refurbish, modernise and digitise the library to increase access to these great texts. Opened in May 2015, the Marc Weinberg Community Library now contains a modern open library, suitable for both personal and academic study, with free wi-fi facilities and an online catalogue. It also contains a new ‘Discovery Studio’, which is used for special child-focused educational activities, including ‘The Children's Pop-Up Library’ and immersive learning programmes.

Tr a iningF our Teachers

Since its inception, over 15 years ago, more than 500 teachers have graduated from the Jewish Teacher Training Partnership (JTTP) and many have gone on to become leaders in the field. The personalised and supportive environment that LSJS provides, as well as placements in high performing schools, gives our trainee teachers the best opportunity to succeed.

As the only government-approved provider of teacher training for the Jewish community, our teacher training programmes play a vital role in raising the standards of education across the Jewish community. Our teacher training programmes foster proficient and passionate educators who are well equipped to teach in the 21st century classroom.

School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) Ranked ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED, our one-year SCITT programme, accredited by the University of Roehampton, provides the opportunity to obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). The SCITT course provides trainees with the best of both worlds: the ability to learn from experts in the field, as well as the experience of 120 days' training in high performing primary schools across London.

Trainees have the opportunity to further specialise in Jewish Studies.

School Direct: (Primary or Secondary) The School Direct programme is a partnership between Jewish schools and LSJS which provides an employment-based route towards gaining Qualified Teacher Status. LSJS works with Wolfson Hillel Primary School & JFS,* to provide training and accreditation.

This is an intensive programme aimed at those who are looking for a career change to enter the classroom and learn on the job without having to forgo a year's wages.

Secondary school trainees specialise in either Jewish Studies or Modern Foreign Languages. * and Yavneh College from September 2016.

Assessment Only Our Assessment Only pathway supports highly experienced graduate teachers to obtain their teacher qualification. Suitably qualified teachers can receive their QTS in under three months via a series of lesson observations and fulfilling the Teachers' Standards. We support teachers in primary, secondary and special schools, both Jewish and secular, to achieve QTS. So far, more than 30 teachers have been successful and are now able to progress with their career.

Don’t be afraid to bring your own personality to your teaching, especially if it engages the children even more.

The best advice I can give to current graduates is to maintain positive working relationships with all the people you work with. The teaching community is a great community, it is always a lovely feeling when you need support and there are many familiar faces to choose from!

Why did you choose Teacher Training at LSJS? The SCITT Programme at LSJS had a really good reputation and this motivated me to apply for the course. It also included placements in local Jewish primary schools which was also very important to me.

Why did you choose Teacher Training at LSJS? I always wanted to be a teacher but especially in a Jewish school and the SCITT course offered this opportunity. To be able to train alongside other Jewish teachers and make friends was a bonus!

Teacher F Development

Annual Conference for Jewish Studies Teachers LSJS recognises the importance of ongoing professional development for Jewish Studies teachers. In 2011, LSJS and the Institute for the Professional Development of Jewish Studies (IPDJS) identified the need for a conference dedicated to Jewish Studies teacher development. In July of that year, we ran our first conference, which attracted a wide range of Jewish Studies professionals. Over the years we have continued to build on the success of the conferences in both session and delegates.

The conference is the largest of its kind in Western Europe. Each year it attracts almost 200 teachers from across the UK, teachers who are responsible for the Jewish education of an estimated 6000 children.

Conference presenters are chosen from the best practitioners in the UK and around the world, including Dr Scott Goldberg, Zahava Taub and Rabbi Pinchos Hayman. Each year we are supported by the regular presence of Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis (and previously Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks).

Degrees F at LSJS

LSJS is dedicated to raising the standard of education in Jewish schools and making a unique contribution to the growth and development of academic Jewish Studies in the United Kingdom. Our bespoke BA and MA courses in Jewish Education provide unique and alternative pathways to professional qualification and development for educators. Our long-established MA in Jewish Studies has trained a generation of rabbis, teachers and academics.

Z BA Jewish Education (Hons) Our BA in Jewish Education is underpinned by the belief that university education leads to better teachers. Recognising that a large number of teachers did not have a degree or the time to commit to a full-time degree, LSJS created a BA that could meet the unique needs of those teaching in the Jewish community.

Validated by Middlesex University, our four-year part-time course offers a warm and personalised environment in which students are given time and space to hone their knowledge and skill-set, with a strong focus on the unique context of Jewish schools. The students draw on educational theory and techniques, which they can immediately test and implement in the classroom.

Being part of the MA course has provided amazing opportunities such as access to a network of contacts within Jewish education.�

MA Jewish Studies LSJS has a long-standing commitment to promoting and facilitating the study of Judaism at the highest academic levels. Our MA Jewish Studies, offered in collaboration with King's College London, has enabled a diverse student body – including rabbis, educators and aspiring academics – to broaden and deepen their knowledge of the richly diverse field of Jewish Studies. Graduates use the knowledge and skills developed in the course of their studies to inform and enhance their work as educators and leaders in the community, or as a springboard to doctoral research.

MA Jewish Education Research we commissioned in 2013 revealed there was little opportunity for senior educators and rabbis to undertake useful and relevant academic professional development. In response we developed an MA in Jewish Education, validated by Middlesex University, which offers new pedagogical insight, innovative teaching ideas and a network of likeminded colleagues.

Taught part-time over two years, the MA provides our students with the skills and knowledge to improve their schools, their communities and progress in their careers. To cater to a diverse range of educators, the MA comprises of three specialisms: Teaching and Learning, Leadership and Management, and Community Education – ensuring its relevance to rabbis, informal educators and school governors as well as teachers.

London Montefiore Semicha Programme A partnership of the Judith Lady Montefiore College and LSJS

This exciting programme is training a new generation of home-grown rabbis to serve the Anglo-Jewish community. The students are selected for their sound Jewish learning, good textual skills and broad secular education. Graduates have taken roles as community rabbis, school teachers, kashrut professionals, accomplished lay leaders and yeshiva rabbis, and have gained senior positions in key communal organisations.

The core halachic (legal) studies are now being undertaken in collaboration with Eretz Hemdah Institute for Advanced Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, under the personal supervision of Rabbi Yosef Carmel. The curriculum includes Tanach, Midrash, ethics and Jewish history as well as practical community-directed subjects such as counselling, homiletics, life cycle events, chazanut, teaching and presentation skills and organisational management.

Practical rabbinics is taught by distinguished experts including Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis (President of LSJS), Rabbi Dr Abraham Levy (Honorary Principal of the Judith Lady Montefiore College and the Honorary Deputy President of LSJS), and Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (Honorary President of LSJS).

Successful students receive a rabbinic diploma (semicha) whose signatories include Rabbi Nachum Rabinovitch and Rabbi Zalman Nechemiah Goldberg. The London Montefiore Semicha Programme is also recognised by the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA).

In 2013, ten students graduated, and there are currently seven students on schedule to graduate in 2017. The London Montefiore Semicha Programme is proudly continuing the tradition of training rabbis that began in Jews' College well over a century ago.

The Susi Bradfield Educational Leadership Programme In 1998, our faculty noticed a growing demand for female educators to teach adults in the community, and a year later the the Bradfield Programme was launched. Generously supported by the Bradfield family, and developed by Dr Tamra Wright, this unique one-year programme inspires both new and experienced educators to develop their knowledge and skills. In addition to studying Torah with some of the world's leading Jewish educators, participants learn innovative approaches to preparing and delivering classes, and develop the ability to generate ideas for new educational projects.

Today the Susi Bradfield name is synonymous with high achievement and the ability to lead and teach in the community.

Lifelong Learning

LSJS has been a leader in lifelong learning for over 15 years. Offering courses that combine 21st century concepts with Torah values and perspectives, we inspire our community with a lifelong love of Jewish learning and practice. Our adult education classes offer engaging learning experiences for Jews across the religious and knowledge spectrum. Using the very best local teachers as well as international scholars, our innovative courses and classes are taught both in our Wohl Campus for Jewish Education and in communities across the country.

We cover an eclectic mix of topics which range from Faith in the 21st Century, A Jewish Guide to Islam & Censorship in Judaism to the Dybbuk, Europe and Her Jews and The A-Z of Anti-Zionism. At the heart of our adult education programme is the study of Tanach (Bible).

Our revolutionary Tanach in a Year course is now taught around the world. Our In-depth Tanach series continues to be popular.

Tours Our lifelong learning programme extends beyond the classroom, with unique educational tours based around Jewish themes and the Chagim. Examples include our Pre-Pesach, Chanukah and Tisha Ba’av British Museum tours, where we explore the worlds of Ancient Egypt, Rome and Babylon, as well as our Biblical tour of the National Gallery.

Higher Torah Learning The Midrasha and the LSJS Bet Midrash for Men are programmes that reflect our commitment to higher learning. The Bet Midrash for Men is a bi-weekly advanced programme where men learn Gemara in depth, followed by a high level shiur by Rabbi Eliezer Zobin. Sponsored in memory of Judi Back, the Midrasha provides a more intensive learning programme for women. The Midrasha offers a range of classes and attracts over 65 women each week.

International Scholars LSJS hosts some of the world's best adult educators and scholars, from Dr Aviva Gottlieb-Zornberg and Rabbi Menachem Leibtag to Professor Elliott Malamet and Gila Fine. Every year LSJS brings over the best scholars and teachers to be part of our lifelong learning programme.
