As a patient in Heatherwood, you will have the opportunity to engage in an educational pathway.

An education tutor will aim to see you within your first week at Heatherwood.

Firstly, you will have the opportunity to complete a Wales Essential Skills Test, which will help to identify any needs in Communication, Application of Number and Digital Literacy skills.

From this you may wish to engage in a variety of courses on offer at Heatherwood.

Essential Communication Skills (Literacy)

As so many aspects of life require you to communicate with people, this course enables people to be able to develop communication skills they already have, and help enhance those skills to be able to be used in a variety of settings and aspects.

SWEET- Level 1 and 2

This qualification allows you to gain skills in confidence, wellbeing and resilience. The wide range of resources it provides will help you develop skills essential for life and employability. You be able to achieve a nationally recognised qualification as well as participating in fun and engaging activities. You will have opportunities to explore modules like; Personal Identity, Healthy Living, Moving forward and Enterprise and Employability.

Essential Application of Number Skills (Numeracy)

Similarly, it is also beneficial to be able to utilise numeracy (maths) skills in everyday life. This includes being able to manage a budget, being able to follow a recipe, understanding percentages to work out VAT and calculating physical activity.

Home Cooking Skills Level 1

Cooking is an essential skill. This course aims to help you gain the skills to be able to cook independently while being able to make healthy choices beneficial to wellbeing. As well as this, you will develop your knowledge on kitchen basics, food safety and hygiene and planning with lists and budgets.

Home Cooking Skills Level 2

Following successful completion of the Level 1 course, participants will have the opportunity to enhance cooking skills further by exploring more detailed preparation and cooking methods. This requires participants to cook a two-course meal; identifying various starters, main meals and desserts to make. This course would suit those who wish to take cooking further as an occupation or career.

Employability Skills Level 1

Employability skills are the skills, qualities and attitudes that employers say are essential for their workplace. This course will help you explore the importance of these skills while providing tools for you to be able to develop them. It looks at how to create a CV, how to create a covering letter, what employers look for in an employee and how to achieve success at an interview.
