Fifteen years down the line from when myself and Kate Taylor held the four day Halloween Short Film Festival at the ICA, and I sit here to take stock of what the hell happened since that early January 2004. We’re still the auteur-led punk-rock left-field in-your-face celebration of the moving image, but collaboration and curation is key to delivering the best festival we can. Those changes have seen a more sustainable LSFF and team to deliver it, headed up by Sarah Chorley in a new role as Festival Director. The in-house programming team include Tom Grimshaw, searching out the best in international short film and events, and Shanida Scotland, who has brought new voices into the programme. New Producer Gerry Maguire is the glue holding it all together.

Apart from the vast technological changes of the past 15 years, the film industry has come under scrutiny for its practices. The magnifying glass has peered closely at issues around diversity and sexism. As a champion of British film, across areas of talent development, LSFF has always seen a fantastic turnout of women, LGBT and BAME filmmakers. We need alternatives to those stories told by the cis-white male. For 2018, we continue to bring you groundbreaking, essential work from exciting filmmakers Ngozi Onwurah, William E Jones, Mati Diop, Forough Farrokhzad, Dawn Shadforth, Julie Dash, Barbara Hammer & Chick Strand amongst others - platforming the voices and talents of minority artists.

We welcome French filmmaker Lucile Hadžihalilović to the Festival for a screening of her shorts and her 2004 feature masterpiece Innocence, keeping up a tradition of showcasing the filmmakers we think are unique and special, and should be seen, and she’ll also join our competition jury. An international jury is a first for LSFF, a change that’s indicative of the ongoing development and growth of our Festival, taking things forward for the next fifteen years.

As LSFF turns 15, the brilliant team who make it all happen have had much cause to reflect and consider just what it is that we’re doing.

New shorts remain the centrepiece of LSFF and long shall they reign.

Additional rich, challenging, ambitious layers of LSFF special events see us stretch what a short film is and can do.

This year, brilliant UK & International shorts sit seamlessly alongside the work of Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad; video artist William E Jones’ reclaimed police surveillance footage; LSFF’s own With Teeth artists presenting experimental AV work; a programme led by and for the D/deaf community; and the work of pop goddess Kylie Minogue.

LSFF is a collective of like-minded people who love film, arts and culture.

We aspire to find bold ideas, new perspectives and to amplify various voices. Simple and and straightforward in some ways, but difficult in others, especially in the current political climate, where funding and personal challenges abound.

On our 15th anniversary, we want to make it official and promise that we will keep learning, growing and being a bit weird for as long as there are enough of us to fill a decent sized cinema.

Joining the LSFF team as part of the 15th edition is a huge privilege; it puts the festival’s legacy in sharp focus, emphasising so much more than just this year’s amazing line up. You can get a feel for that legacy in We Dare To Fail, a Best of LSFF program demonstrating a sample of our alumni’s successes.

This year we’re expanding to use more venues than ever, including some important landmarks in London’s cultural community – the vibrant Rich Mix in Shoreditch; the beautiful Regent’s Street Cinema, the cavernous Rio Cinema in Dalston and the wonderful BFI Southbank.

You’ll find our industry program in its new home at MOTH Club in Hackney, whilst festival regulars will still find us at the ICA and Curzon Soho.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors. We want to sing the praises of both Arts Council England and the BFI who support so much of what we do. Then there’s MUBI, who this year present three amazing events from strong, female voices we feel are important for you to hear; look out for Creative England’s showcase and make sure to join British Council for their regular networking and industry events.

A 360 degree nebulous orb defies the conventions of theatrical presentation, as musicians perform in-the-round beneath multiple circular projections created by Daisy Dickinson.

An improvised live set created by Adrena Adrena will see a constantly changing and evolving set of guest musicians from Faust, Wire, Boredoms and other experimental, electronic and progressive bands, as they straddle the styles of electronica, jazz and progressive rock.

Julian Hand, who has directed the 2018 LSFF trailer, will also be projecting psychedelic visuals using coloured liquids and slides.

L.A. Rebellion’, coined by Black Film Review’s Clyde Taylor, refers to a critical mass of American filmmakers of African origin or descent brought together at the UCLA Film School in the late ‘60s. They envisioned an alternative to Hollywood, a new independent cinema sensitive to the real lives of Black communities and interrogating the onscreen representation of Black people in the United States - a revolutionary act for its time, with an enduring legacy.

This event showcases this body of work, which features UCLA alumni Julie Dash (Daughters of the Dust, The Rosa Parks Story) and Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep, To Sleep With Anger), followed by a panel discussion including Dr. Clive nwonga (LSE).

When director Julie Dash conceived of the groundbreaking Daughters of the Dust - a multigenerational tale of the Black women of Gullah struggling to hold on to their culture - little did she know that 25 years later, her work would resurge to take its place on the world stage.

Visually spellbinding in its cinematography and never more timely in its subject matter, Dash’s film provided an obvious touchstone to inspire Beyoncé’s vision of Black womanhood in Lemonade.

Between 1982 and 1995, American writer Chris Kraus wrote and directed eight short films and one feature. Like her prose these films display a high wire virtuosity as they dangerously skitter through a myriad of cinematic forms.

Documentary, fiction, essay film and performance art all fuse together to create a body of work that is as intellectually rigorous as it is sardonically funny. From feminist readings of Antonin Artaud to Cold War sleeper agents, via dominatrices and New York City crime scenes, these films are gluttonously filled with humour, sexuality, abjection, metaphor, allusion, an insatiable curiosity and a Dadaist sense of provocation and absurdity.

The House is Black is the only known film directed by Farough Farrokhzad (1935 – 1967), one of Iran’s greatest 20th Century Poets who tragically died aged just 32.

The film is widely regarded as one of the greatest Iranian documentaries of all time and depicts, with vivid humanity, an isolated community of lepers living in Tabriz, northwestern Iran. This documentary is sound-tracked by segments of one of Farrokhzad’s poems, read by the author herself. During the screening, an English translation of this poem will be read aloud.

This rare screening of the film will be accompanied by readings of Farrokhzad’s poetry and a discussion of her legacy in Iranian cinema, culture and society.

The House Is Black premiered at Oberhausen Short Film Festival in 1963 where it received the award for best documentary. The Oberhausen Archive has kindly supplied their restored 35mm print of the film for this screening.

To celebrate LSFF’s 15th birthday, LSFF and Domino together host an evening of music video, DJs, giveaways and surprises.

Best buddies, LSFF and Domino, have spent more than the past 15 years creating, curating and sharing an alternative point of view. In this time, Domino has created a wealth of music videos from directors such Saam Farahmand, Kathryn Ferguson, Rollo Jackson, Shyola and by Luke & Joseph. Titled after the song ‘It’s All Good’ by the label’s youngest East London signing ‘Superorganism’, The Moth Club will play host to a fun indulgence into past, present and future Domino music videos, a time to praise the brilliant directors and producers for their inspiring creations as well as introduce some new visual projects that should pave the way for the next 15 years together.”

The Power of the Witch

Secret Rites (1971) is a pseudo documentary that illustrates a series of initiation rites for a newbie witch into a Notting Hill-based coven. Much more straightfaced, The Power of the Witch (1971) is a rarely-seen documentary that works as a capsule of an era, featuring interviews with King and Queen of the witch craze themselves, Alex and Maxine Sanders. Both are fascinating artefacts of the 1970s London counterculture that clash with the witchsploitation film craze of the same era.

At the helm a fascinating and flawed father, proverbial performer and interfering agitator. Two besuited brothers and those beautifully scrawny sisters. Are the Page family our dinosaurs or are they our visionaries? Has the world passed them by or have we come full circle and is it us that are now struggling to catch up?”

A place to hear inventive documentaries and sound art works that have been made in languages you don’t necessarily speak. To mark the one year anniversary of the EU referendum, The Guardian and Headlong Theatre teamed up to create short dramas set across the UK. Prominent scriptwriters were commissioned to write short scripts performed by well-known actors from each region. Each script was filmed on location with a diverse range of characters who highlight the nation’s growing divisions at a moment of seismic political change.

Along with a screening of 8 films, we will have a performance on stage, followed by a panel discussion with Jess Gormley and Noah PayneFrank from the Guardian, Amy Hodge from Headlong Theatre.

“Taqwa” and “core,” referring respectively to an awe-inspiring consciousness of Allah and to the hardcore punk rock music style.

They’re young. They’re punk. And they’re rocking both their Muslim and American worlds with their music and lyrics.

The most important film to come out of Pakistan in decades; a provocative, allegorical tragicomic metaphor for the multitude of ‘anonymous’ threats in contemporary Pakistan and the national apathy towards the rot in society. An uncomfortable, inyour-face examination of Pakistan, from its violence to its apathy to its refusal to recognize its moral corruption, taking on the media, politics, religion and even sports, in a way that scrutinizes and implicates everyone, including the viewer.

Join us in the ICA bar afterwards for a Ballardian Vinyl Therapy DJ set: Car Crash Disco.

Additionally, we also welcome filmmaker Sam Ashby, artist Prem Sahib and indie game developer Robert Yang for a post screening discussion hosted by Dr Fiona Anderson, and with support from Arts Council England​ , we will premiere a short commission from Sam Ashby ​ in reaction to Jones’ piece.

Prior to the screening we will also be showcasing Robert Yang’s game The Tearoom, a cruising simulation made in direct response to the film. On release the game ran afoul of the censors and so in a bold piece of satirical provocation Yang replaced all the penises with guns. The game was then successfully passed uncut.

In 2007 the video artist William E Jones presented Tearoom. Originally filmed in 1962 by the Ohio police, Tearoom is surveillance footage, a blunt tool of oppression that documented men cruising in a public restroom. This footage was eventually used as evidence to prosecute the men of sodomy and public deviancy.

In exhuming this footage 40 years later, Jones revealed hidden dimensions through recontexualisation, offering up an open democratic space where age, class and racial boundaries break down, whilst remaining a poignant reminder of the anxiety and persecution these men were forced to endure.

INNOCENCE Lucile Hadžihalilović 2004, France, 122’ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This year, our continuing centring of women filmmakers on the fringe is helmed by our International Juror, Lucile Hadžihalilović.

This is a rare chance to see her short films, from her mid ‘90s mini-feature La Bouche De Jean-Pierre aka Mimi to her more recent short Nectar. She remains both controversial and challenging, tackling issues of teenage sexuality while developing a distinct visual identity.

Hadžihalilović’s strikingly unique debut feature is a dark yet beautiful fable that contrasts the atmosphere of the gothic horror writings of both Mary Shelley and Poe with the light of youthful purity. This award-winning French drama, featuring Marion Cotillard, follows a year in the life of the girls at a secluded boarding school, and is inspired by the 1903 novella Mine-Haha, or On the Bodily Education of Young Girls by Frank Wedekind. We complement this with a retrospective of her earlier short works.

Jonathan Romney in The Guardian, 2016: “Hadžihalilovic grew up in Morocco, where her father – the surname is Bosnian – had moved from Yugoslavia. Aged 12, she started reading a lot of science fiction, notably Ray Bradbury and Theodore Sturgeon and then discovered horror writer HP Lovecraft, whose fascination with all things tentacular and aquatic is unmistakably imprinted on Evolution (2016).

Moving to France at 17, she studied art history, before graduating from the Paris film school La Fémis.

In current French cinema, Hadžihalilović is pretty much out on her own limb with her commitment to the textures of the imagination. “Sometimes when you dream, the images are neutral, but they have a real emotional charge that doesn’t seem to fit,” she says. “That’s what I’m trying to capture. When I start a film, I never really know what it’s about, and I want to find out – to explore that zone of mystery.”

THE REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN HIP HOP ARTISTS ON SCREEN + PANEL

From the swim-suited video vixen, to the in control and hyper-sexualised, the onscreen visual representation of women hip hop artists has shifted a multitude of times. In a riot of matching outfits and confrontational lyrics, British acts The Cookie Crew, Wee Papa Girl Rappers and She Rockers burst onto the scene in the 80s and 90s, recording sessions for John Peel and winning chart success bringing with them their own powerful onscreen image.

This event previews forthcoming documentary Home Girls which reclaims this incredible legacy, featuring exclusive extended scenes.

We also explore the onscreen visual representation of women in hip hop then to now.

Short Film Jury The British Council is supporting LSFF’s first International Jury at the 2018 Festival. The jury brings together leading international industry figures to review and award key prizes at LSFF 2018. The competition features 36 exceptional UK and International short films selected by the LSFF programming team from over 2500 submissions.

LUCILE HADZIHALILOVIC Lucile Hadzihalilovic grew up in Morocco. Then, moving to France at 17, she studied art history before graduating from the Paris film school IDHEC (now La Fémis). Her debut minifeature La Bouche de Jean-Pierre premiered in Un Certain Regard in Cannes in 1996. The critically acclaimed Innocence was awarded the award for Best Film in San Sebastian in 2004. Her latest film Evolution picked up the Special Jury Prize in San Sebastian in 2015. Both films were sold and released world-wide.

Additionally, Lucile Hadzihalilovic has directed a few short films: Good Boys Use Condoms (1998), Nectar (2014), De Natura (2017).

LILI HARTWIG Lili is a curator, presenter and festival manager from Hamburg. She studied film and media culture. Since 2005 she has been working for several film festivals in Germany, including the International ShortFilmFestival Hamburg, on the selection committee at Dokfest Kassel and the Dokumentarfilmwoche Hamburg and is on the board of directors of the Hamburg ShortFilmAgency.

KATIE JARVIS Since first being street cast at an Essex railway station as the lead in Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank (2009), Katie Jarvis has been a household name in British independent cinema. The role won her awards in Edinburgh, the BIFAs and Critics Circle. After taking a hiatus to concentrate on raising her family, she has returned to acting in shorts, on TV and in new feature Two Graves (Gary Young, 2017).

Since their inception, music videos have occupied that sweet spot between sound and vision - bridging the gap between fashion and film, giving platform to choreography, indulging the more experimental while remaining a staple of pop culture. Here, we showcase work from across the genres - from electronica to folk, rap to disco - including music from St Etienne, Zed’s Dead, and Douglas McGregor. 55’

A festival favourite, the always popular Sketch Night returns with an evening of short shorts and live comedy, hosted by Gem Carmella (Short Sighted Cinema). This year, we’re packing belly laughs with a ventriloquist’s dummy with a life of its own, the smear test from hell, a lesson in, er, conceptual art appreciation, and, of course, the ubiquitous toilet humour sketch.

Interspersed with live comedy acts, we welcome on stage Ken Chung, winner of Dave’s Joke Of The Fringe 2017 at last year’s Edinburgh, and Short & Curly, comprising of Rebecca Shorrocks (Short) and Paul F Taylor (Curly), bringing with them props, one-liners and an inhuman amount of energy.

Time ticks on and the shadow of death looms large. From tense real time drama to meditative, languid panoramas, this programmer explores the myriad ways in which time and loss intertwine. 91’

The international programme is now three years old and over that time it’s been a real joy seeking out new exciting trends and filmmakers from across the globe. Balancing award winners from Cannes, ClermontFerrand and the Berlinale with young up and coming talent, this programme of five screenings brings together some of the most unique voices in fiction, documentary and experimental filmmaking. From existential gas station attendants in the Philippines to erotic French nightmares, via the genre-defying hybrid cinema of Portugal.
