Read the Tier 4 guidance carefully before applying. On our webpage, we have a guide specifically for General Course students. You should refer to the ISVAT guidance and the Tier 4 Policy Guidance. If you have questions after reading the guidance, contact ISVAT for advice. What is meant by low-risk and does this apply to me? This will apply to you if you are a national of a country on this list and are applying for your visa from that country. If you are a non-US national applying for the visa from the US, your application will not be low-risk even though the US is a low-risk country (e.g. if you are a Malaysian national applying for the visa from the US). If your application is not low-risk, you must ensure that you submit all required documentation to evidence your finances and qualification.
I’m currently studying in the US but I’m not a US national, can I apply for the visa from the US? If you are a non-US national studying in the US and have a valid US student visa, you should be able to apply for the visa in the US if you are not planning to return to your home country before you travel to the UK. Can I come to the UK early as a tourist and apply for the Tier 4 visa there? Unfortunately it is not possible to apply for a Tier 4 visa from within the UK if you enter as a Standard Visitor. If you attempt this, your application will be refused and you may not be able to join the General Course. Can I come to the UK before my Tier 4 visa is granted? You should wait until your Tier 4 visa has been granted before travelling to the UK. My university will pay the tuition fees to the LSE, what do I need to do to show this for visa purposes? You’ll need a letter from your home university which confirms the financial arrangements. The letter must meet the requirements which are explained in our guidance. Do I need to have any of my own money?
If your application is considered to be ‘low-risk’, you don’t need to submit original evidence of your finances and qualification with your initial visa application. However, you must still ensure that you meet the Tier 4 visa requirements and are in possession of original documents to evidence that you meet this requirement. The UKVI can request the documents at any time while your application is being processed. There is no real benefit to the low-risk arrangement; it just means that you have to send less documents with your initial application. If your application will be low-risk, we recommend that you don’t include evidence of finances and qualifications. If you choose to submit it, you must ensure that it meets the requirements precisely. Failure to meet the requirements is likely to result in a visa refusal.
You must ensure that you can meet the financial requirements. If you are self-funded, you must ensure that you have sufficient funds to cover the tuition fees plus £11,385 for living costs. If you are relying on bank statements as evidence of funds, please refer to our info sheet for details of the financial documentary requirements. Please note that you can only use money held in your or your parents’ names.
I will be in another country as a tourist over the summer, can I apply there?
How do I know where the visa application centre is in my home country?
No. You must apply in the country where you are ordinarily resident or have the right of residence. If you apply whilst visiting another country, your application is likely to be unsuccessful.

How long does an application take to be processed? The standard processing time is approximately 3 weeks but you can get an indication of recent times here. If you’d like to receive the visa more quickly, you can choose to pay for priority service (information about this will be available on your local visa application centre’s website). Do I need a tuberculosis (TB) testing or any vaccinations for visa purposes? Check the list of countries which require TB testing here.
What is a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and how do I get it? The BRP is the visa, however you can only collect it when you arrive in the UK. A BRP is a credit-card sized plastic card; it is an important legal document so we recommend that you don’t carry it in your wallet on a daily basis as proof of age. Replacing a BRP can be time consuming and expensive so we suggest that you keep it somewhere safe with your passport.
If you are a national of a country where TB testing is required but have only been in the US (or another country where TB testing is not required) for the last 6 months, you will not require TB testing for visa application purposes. However you will need to explain why you are exempt in the ‘additional information’ section of your visa application form. You cannot rely on the Entry Clearance Officer guessing that you are exempt from the travel history you provide in your application.
Why is my visa only a month long?
If you have recently been living in a country which is subject to the TB testing requirement, you may need to provide a TB test certificate from an approved test centre even if you are not a national of a country where TB testing is required. What is a decision letter?
Initially you will be given a temporary visa vignette which will be valid for 30 days. This will allow you to enter the UK on a Tier 4 visa. You will then need to collect a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) which is the actual visa from a Post Office within 10 days of arriving in the UK. More information about this is available in our info sheet.
There are no other vaccinations required for UK visa purposes, but see here for recommendations.
You should receive this letter when your passport and supporting documents are returned to you after the visa application has been processed. The letter informs you of the outcome of your visa application. It also confirms where you must collect your BRP. Check carefully inside the envelope for it. You will need to bring this letter with you to the UK because you require it to collect the BRP.
How do I provide biometrics?
I think that the dates on my visa are incorrect, what do I do?
You will book an appointment as part of your visa application. Biometric information will be taken at that appointment.
First, please remember that the date on the visa will be in the UK format which is dd/mm/yy. If you are already aware of this and can see that the visa dates are still incorrect, please contact the visa processing centre directly to inform them of the error and request that it is corrected. You can also refer to our webpage for information about visa corrections.
Do I really need to provide my original passport for the application? Yes because a temporary visa vignette (sticker) must be placed in your passport if your visa application is successful. If you do not submit your original passport, you will not receive a visa. Will I be interviewed as part of my application? You may be interviewed as part of your visa application. If you are interviewed, it is likely that you will be asked questions about your studies in the UK in order for the Entry Clearance Officer (the person who assesses your visa application) to decide if you are a genuine student. Could my application be refused and what does this means? It is not possible to guarantee that a visa application will be successful. If you do not meet the requirements for the visa your application will be refused which is why it is very important that you read our guidance for General Course students and contact us if you have questions after reading the guidance.
I’ve heard that it’s not a good idea to travel to the UK via Ireland; why is this? This is because Ireland is part of the Common Travel Area, which means that there is no border control when you enter the UK. This means that your passport will not be stamped with the required endorsements when you enter the UK. Please refer to the UKCISA website for further information. Can you speak to my parents about my visa instead of me? Due to the Data Protection Act, we have to contact you directly. We are not permitted to discuss and individual with a third party without prior consent. If you parents want to see the information, we suggest that you forward our emails to them but you will need to respond to us directly if you have further questions. Can I call you for advice? We don’t advertise our telephone number because we prefer to provide advice in writing due to the risk of verbal advice being misinterpreted.
