WELCOME TO 2020 As I sit writing this and wondering where 2019 went, I also can’t wait to get into the New Year. Why? Because I’m lucky enough to have a few insights into the year ahead, and it’s going to be huge.

Every year we seem to be getting busier and busier, and I wrote last year about the pace of change, and it seems faster than ever.

The world is becoming ever more digital – connected by wires or wireless, via the internet, cloud, apps and software.

But locksmiths and security professionals alike need a combination of solutions, and LSC is the best placed security products distributor in Australasia to help you with that. Be it electronic or mechanical, wired or wireless, opened by key or proximity, locked with a chain, accessed by a phone, fob, card or biometric, watched over by CCTV or just made more secure in general – I feel LSC and our industry have got it covered.

I was talking with a couple of staff about how our newsletter looked like in the 1980s and compared to today and it’s amazing to see how the product mix, and how products are presented have evolved. I see this evolution as a natural reflection of our industry and the things our customers are doing to secure the premises of homes, businesses and vehicles Australasia-wide.

We’ve got an exciting new online project coming up this year (I am supposed to be sworn to secrecy), and I’ve just returned from Europe and have had a peek at what Silca and ABUS will bring to market later in the year and WOW, it’s going to be a big year. Then there’s all the development happening with our own brands of Electronic Security and the improved integration and enhancements on the radar there.

Another WOW. I had the chance to be involved in the judging of our ABYL award, and what impressed me was the passion for our industry some of the next generation have. I felt buoyed up by the positive and can-do attitude of the entrants and finalists, and it was great to see them also embracing a future which focuses on security - but delivers that in new and interesting ways.

Sam Millar of Ruswin Integrated Security Systems has emerged from a final round of judging as Australia’s Best Young Locksmith 2019. Sam has proved to be a talented young locksmith with a great future ahead.

The new Poker Pro is based on the hugely popular Futura platform, and is a high quality automatic duplicator for regular household and automotive keys.

The machine features a patented laser reader, ensuring the ultimate precision when reading the original key. The touchless process ensures the customers original key is perfectly traced without operator intervention.

The machine has newly designed 4-way jaws for securely holding small or large single or double sided regular household or automotive keys. The machine just has two buttons – start and stop, so is ideal for users expert and novice alike.

The machine includes a microprocessor controlled carriage and cutter mechanism which are designed to optimise cutter life while producing a key that doesn’t need deburring with a brush. The motors are controlled by electronics, not by a mechanical device as is the case with many machines of this type, thus improving reliability and accuracy.

Intuitive LED status lights show you the progress of the cutting cycle, meaning the operator can perform other tasks while keeping a look out of the corner of the eye as to progress of the customers key cut.

Lastly, the integrated safety mechanism and shield ticks the OSH box by ensuring a dead stop should the shield be opened, and that swarf is contained and falls to the integrated swarf collection tray.

Tech Ed Wrap up for 2019 Richard Hoares and Justin Manners headed west to Perth in December to deliver the last of the Tech Ed courses for 2019. Run over two days the ADP202 Transponders & Diagnostics Key Programming Course was run back to back with the AEE101 Introductory to EEPROM Course.

Plans for Tech Ed delivery in 2020 are nearly finalised. Stay tuned for an exciting new course currently under development.
