Dates overview Our summer school courses are spread over three sessions and we have a number of options for you to make the most out of what we have on offer.

Option 1: The London Placement / 1st July – 9th August This 6-week course offers you the chance to take a short-term, credit-bearing internship and add London work experience to your resume!

Option 2: Mix and Match We offer a variety of two-week courses throughout the summer which are split across three sessions. Take a look at the table below to see which courses we have on offer this summer. Please note that you can only select one course per session.

The London Placement (Option 1) 1st July – 9th August Completing an internship in another country can be a life-changing experience.

We will ensure you gain valuable work experience suited to your career path, enabling you to use your academic knowledge and develop a wide range of professional skills. Having industry experience enhances your resume and looks more attractive to future employers!

While completing your work placement, this course creates a framework for personal reflection on theoretical and practical issues related to professional development. You will also get the chance to create an up-to-date and professional resume.

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to: • critically review the concept of the ‘organisation of work’ as it currently exists in the UK • analyse specific elements of the employment relationship from the perspective of their placement experience • evaluate the validity of a variety of management theories and models in terms of their practical and conceptual value.

London: City of Change (Part of the London Placement Programme) 1st July – 26th July This is our flagship course designed specifically to give you an insight into London’s lifestyle, culture, and history. You will read from a range of Londonset texts – literary and historical – view selected London-based films and documentaries, and undertake a range of conducted walks with visits to sites of relevant interest such as the V&A Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of London.

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to: • express your knowledge and understanding of aspects of London’s historical and cultural development since 1845 • identify London as a theme and motif in literature and cinema or visual culture • identify some of the key planning and development issues facing London in the 21st Century

Arts and Creative Industries

Journalism / Session 1 Contemporary journalism requires the ability to tell stories, using writing supported with pictures and graphics. This module provides you with the ability to identify a potential feature story, learn how to research and source it, and then to structure it for publication using quotes, data, evidence, and other components to create a feature article. This module will equip you with the necessary skills in order for a story to be published successfully online.

Shakespeare: Text & Performance / Session 2 This module offers you the chance to engage with a selection of Shakespeare’s drama, on the page, stage and on film. The module will introduce you to Shakespeare’s dramatic texts and changing approaches to their production since their original performances in the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre.

We currently work with over 50 local, national and international arts and creative industries partners, integrating these organisations into the learning and teaching within the School, with innovative teaching models that bring industry practice and live briefs into the classroom.

Entrepreneurship in a Global Context The Science of Wellbeing

Session 2: 15th July – 26th July International Marketing Management Entrepreneurial Mindset and Skills Session 3: 29th July – 9th August Introduction to Accounting and Finance

Entrepreneurship in a Global Context / Session 1 This module will aim to develop your understanding of the multitude of challenges facing entrepreneurs in a global environment. From defining global markets and their relationship to entrepreneurship, the module will explore innovation in a global context and the development of entrepreneurial companies.

International Marketing Management / Session 2 In this module you will learn about the forces driving the internationalisation of business, how they affect marketing and the challenges marketers face in the global economy. The module aims to provide you with an understanding of both the operational and strategic aspects of international marketing, and will facilitate your development of the skills necessary to tackle practical situations inherent to international marketing operations.

The Science of Wellbeing / Session 2 The module teaches you skills and strategies grounded in positive psychology, to increase your personal and professional performance. You will cover topics including effective communication, emotional management, goal setting and how to create positive habits that can lead to a more successful and fulfilling life. You will also look at how to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety and discuss ways to navigate setbacks and continue to achieve. This module balances theory with practice, and provides you with tools and techniques to reduce stress, increase performance and manage your mindset in order to succeed.

Introduction to Accounting & Finance / Session 3 The module is designed to introduce you to the basic concepts of Accounting and Finance. The module is designed for those who will not practice accounting but will be exposed to financial information which you will need to understand and use for decision making purposes. Following initial introductory work on producing basic financial statements, the emphasis will then move on to interpreting and using the financial information these statements provide to enhance decision making related to both external and internal requirements.

Entrepreneurial Mindset and Skills / Session 3 This module will explore the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and the behaviours, skills and mindset required to ‘think out of the box’ to identify and pursue business opportunities. The module will examine the concepts of creativity and innovation, as well as ask why they are so important to entrepreneurs. The module will include case studies of entrepreneurs from diverse cultures, self-assessment and peer assessment exercises, and individual project work. You will be introduced to relevant entrepreneurial management concepts and theories, as well as get the opportunity to reflect on your own entrepreneurial potential.

English Legal System / Session 1 This module will explore the making and application of the English Common Law. In addition to class room and library based study, students will take part in a series of study visits to the Houses of Parliament and English Courts. You will learn about the distinctive features of the English Common Law system, including the supremacy of parliament, the separation of powers, the doctrine of precedent and the jury trial system.

English Legal Skills / Session 2 This module will develop core English legal professional skills – Advocacy, Drafting, Interviewing, Mediation, Negotiation and Research. You will practice and develop core English legal professional skills through observation, instruction and practical workshops, laying the foundations for life-long reflective practice.

Top 10 in the UK for satisfaction with teaching in Law (Guardian 2019).

The School is home to an award-winning Legal Advice Clinic and houses specialist teaching rooms to provide practice opportunities for our law and education students respectively.
