We are pleased to report that our 55th year was a very successful year for LS3P. 2018 brought exciting opportunities as well as significant global challenges; together, we navigated both and finished the year strong and focused.
This year we maintained our Design First focus while also shining a spotlight on high performance. Building upon our solid foundation of success, we strived for high performance in projects, teams, individuals, and the firm as a whole. Our commitment to continued excellence is evident in the quality of our work and in our collaborative, collegial culture.
Though an active news cycle continues to bring peaks and valleys, we are proud to be united by our common values and by our genuine commitment to each other. In the architecture field, we are uniquely positioned to be problem-solvers, consensus-builders, and change-makers. We look forward to bringing innovative solutions to the opportunities and challenges ahead!
2018 was a year of exploration. We began a process of Evolution which reaffirmed our foundational values while looking towards the future. These Evolution work sessions led by Dave Gilmore of DesignIntelligence, with our team members featured to the right, yielded rich discussions and began laying the groundwork for opportunities for strategic, focused changes that will best position our firm for the future. We spent deliberate time soliciting feedback on our operations, listening, visioning, and thinking. We assessed our strengths, considered future possibilities, and began setting new goals. As we looked inward at the changes an evolving future will bring, we continued to reach outward through ongoing community engagement. Through this intensive reflection, we continue to embrace the One Firm attitude which binds us together. The initial stages of this chapter in our Evolution brought a series of exciting strategic staff changes. Katherine Peele was named Chief Practice Officer and will focus on firmwide practice, design expertise, research and development, and market sector growth. George Temple was named Chief Operations Officer and will continue to oversee the firm’s finance, technology, and human resources teams as well as other critical aspects of LS3P’s business. Chris Boney was named Chief Relationships Officer and will focus on firmwide business development while leading LS3P’s business development team. Katie Robinson was named Brand & Communications Officer and will lead LS3P’s firmwide marketing and communications efforts. Laura Miller was named Wilmington Office Leader, and will oversee practice and operations in the Wilmington area. Bob Pressley will

CAROLINA BAY CCRC (ILM) HONORED WITH A NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HOME BUILDERS AWARD. Carolina Bay’s senior living options include high-end garden flat apartments with wide shared porches as well as assisted living and specialized care. Connectivity is central to the design, from hallways with natural light and outdoor views to walking paths which connect to the wider community. Multiple dining options, a wellness center, an indoor pool, and shared gathering spaces round out the amenities.
LE CREUSET BOUTIQUE (CHS) HONORED WITH AN AIA SOUTH CAROLINA AWARD. This prototype retail store for Le Creuset created a “white box” backdrop which highlights the form and beauty of the colorful products. Natural light, seamless technology, and integrated storage all contribute to the efficiency and appeal of the space. All the major display millwork, including the built-in wall display cabinets, is easily removable in the event of quick relocation.

RIDGECREST MCKENZIE RESIDENCE (JAMES & CONNIE MCKENZIE RESIDENCE) (GSP) HONORED WITH A SOUTH CAROLINA HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION (SCHBA) PINNACLE AWARD AND A HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF GREENVILLE - BRIDGE AWARD. This Lake Keowee vacation home interconnects mountain-cottage modules to accommodate large family vacations and to be comfortably cozy for the owners when they are there alone. The design brings their Florida sensibilities for outdoor living and translates them seamlessly into a waterfront Mountain Lake Vernacular style. RIVERLIGHTS WELCOME CENTER (ILM) HONORED WITH A NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HOME BUILDERS AWARD. This intimate welcome center and café serves a 2000 unit planned community with a riverfront lifestyle. With an open, airy interior and a serene ocean-inspired materials palette, the center functions as a living room for the community. The cafe accommodates art shows, wine tastings, and informal gatherings; diverse casual seating areas with a maritime aesthetic invite residents and guests to relax and enjoy the space. HUSK AT 12 W. OGLETHORPE (SAV) HONORED WITH A HISTORIC SAVANNAH FOUNDATION AWARD. This historic preservation project restored a historic but blighted structure for a new chapter of use. The restoration transformed the fire-damaged building into the latest iteration of Husk, an internationally acclaimed farm-to-table restaurant. Bringing this historic building into compliance with code requirements while preserving the historic character of the building presented significant design and construction challenges, including restoring a burnt and abandoned building, removing inappropriate additions, and providing safe egress. ALBEMARLE BUILDING RENOVATION (RDU) HONORED WITH AN NC STATE CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE AWARD AND A DOWNTOWN RALEIGH ALLIANCE IMPRINT AWARD. This major renovation of downtown Raleigh’s Albemarle Building created a welcoming street presence and modernized the original 1970 construction. The new design strengthens the prominent corner on a busy thoroughfare, significantly improving downtown Raleigh’s built environment and restoring the building for contemporary use as a thriving part of the urban landscape. BOOMTOWN (CHS) HONORED WITH AN ASID CAROLINAS AWARD AND AN IIDA DESIGN WORKS AWARD. The new Boomtown headquarters transformed a vacant warehouse into a thriving destination. The original structure featured high-bay warehouse space but offered little visual or spatial definition. An edgy balance of sleek and gritty materials integrate with exposed structure to create a contemporary workplace vibe. Curtainwall and skylights bring natural light deep into the interior, while punches of color and whimsical wallcoverings add visual interest. PERIMETER PARK OFFICE BUILDING 5 (RDU) HONORED WITH A TRIANGLE BUSINESS JOURNAL SPACE AWARD. This new six-story office building for a masterplanned corporate campus offers maximum tenant flexibility with a highly efficient design to reduce costs and keep lease rates extremely competitive in the market. Expansive curtainwall visually connects workspaces with adjacent green spaces, while campus amenities include a state-of-the-art fitness center, walking trails, inviting plazas, and a café with additional open workspace. DOWD YMCA RENOVATION & ADDITION (CLT) HONORED WITH A CHARLOTTE BUSINESS JOURNAL HEAVY HITTERS COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE AWARD. This flagship seven-level YMCA is undergoing a major renovation and expansion including space for administrative offices, a new fitness center, reconfigured wellness/fitness areas, a new circulation spine, upgrades to existing locker rooms and lobby, and new four-level parking deck across the street for 380 spaces. RILEY PARK CLUB (CHS) HONORED WITH AN ASID CAROLINAS AWARD. This new “club level” venue at the Charleston RiverDogs ballpark enclosed a 6,000 SF area above the first baseline seating for both high-end events as well and game day enjoyment. The natural landscape surrounding the ballpark offers breathtaking views, so the design frames the ballpark action on one side of the space, and a beautiful pastoral marsh backdrop complete with vivid sunsets on the other. COMPUCOM HEADQUARTERS (CLT) HONORED WITH A CHARLOTTE BUSINESS JOURNAL HEAVY HITTERS COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE AWARD. Compucom’s new global headquarters maximizes the capabilities of the Internet of Things (IoT). The fully integrated building management system incorporates lighting, HVAC, power, security, occupancy tracking, and scheduling. The facility is the first full Power Over Ethernet (POE) lighting building in the world; every light fixture in the building is both an LED and POE fixture, which saves energy and allows greater operator control. CHEROKEE ROSE RESIDENCE (KEN & LORAINE RICE RESIDENCE) (GSP) HONORED WITH A SOUTH CAROLINA HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION (SCHBA) PINNACLE AWARD. On a site with a 50-mile mountainous viewshed, two Manhattanites sought to create a retreat in which to enjoy their sunset years. The design possesses a fitness for its rustic Southern Appalachia setting and brings an Old-World sensibility toward mass, material, and hand-craftsmanship. Artful deployment of hand-hewn timber, masonry vaulting, copper & cedar shake roofing, natural stone and hand-molded brick contribute to a timeless design. Team Members: Lee O’Shields, John Edwards
JELD WEN HEADQUARTERS INTERIORS (CLT) HONORED WITH A CHARLOTTE BUSINESS JOURNAL HEAVY HITTERS COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE AWARD. This new headquarters for Jeld-Wen, an international manufacturer of windows and doors, created a state-of-the-art workplace focused on collaboration and transparency. The interior palette features wood, metal, and glass, all related to the Jeld-Wen brand and product offerings. A variety of seating and gathering options accommodate diverse workflows. A two-story atrium at the entrance, anchored by a monumental stair, brings light deep into the interior. Team Members: Dana Reed, Elsa Dougherty, Chelsea Harrell
TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER (GSP) HONORED WITH AN IIDA CAROLINAS AND A SHAW CONTRACT DESIGN AWARD. This facility features a modern learning commons with study spaces, classroom, tutoring center, and three-story vertical book storage unit which allows for a flexible floor plate. Floor-to-ceiling glazing in the central hub frames sweeping views of the campus to the south and a forest to the north and houses built-in seating and open quiet study areas. Dynamic flooring aids wayfinding and delineates space throughout the building. Team Members: Cindy Benjamin, Jack Rincon, Jessica Burgess
SKYGARDEN APARTMENTS (CHS) HONORED WITH AN ASID CAROLINAS AWARD AND AN IIDA DESIGN WORKS AWARD. This new student apartment building features indoor parking, game rooms, lounge rooms with kitchens, conference rooms, study rooms, a full size gym, bike storage, a roof top pool, and outdoor roof top garden with a fire pit overlooking the city. At 10 stories, this building is one of the tallest structures in Charleston’s midtown district. MIDTOWN PLAZA (RDU) HONORED WITH A TRIANGLE BUSINESS JOURNAL SPACE AWARD. This 12-story office tower features 339,000 SF of rentable space and two standalone parking structures totaling 1,040 spaces. The steel-frame tower is clad in precast and curtainwall with high performance glass. The building is integrated into a rapidly developing district in Raleigh adjacent to retail, corporate, and residential development. In addition to designing the tower, LS3P designed the nine floor upfit for tech company Allscripts. Team Members: Megan Bowles, Ben Anderson, Chad Wylie, Anne Bean, John Calvert
HOLLINGSWORTH PARK KITCHEN (DAVID & MELISSA FORSTEIN RESIDENCE) (GSP) NATIONAL 76TH ANNIVERSARY WOOD-MODE DESIGN AWARDS. This renovation project transformed a severely out-of-date “transitional country” style kitchen into a contemporary space characterized by simplicity and functionality. The intervention hinged on three simple goals: better organization and detailing of the cabinetry features, lighter and brighter finishes, and simplification of the space. The new design features contrasting highgloss white and rich mocha cabinetry and a large kitchen island with breakfast bar. Team Members: John Edwards
INTERNATIONAL CULINARY INSTITUTE OF MYRTLE BEACH (CHS) HONORED WITH AN ASID CAROLINAS AWARD. This new culinary school provides state-of-the-art facilities for culinary arts education. Drawing from the aesthetic of its coastal town, the design features layered forms and textures in white with dynamic colored accents, sculptural walls, and Mondrian inspired windows. A daylit twostory lobby which doubles as an event space connects baking labs and teaching kitchens to a 60-seat demonstration auditorium with integrated audiovisual equipment and displays. LIVE OAK BANK 2 (ILM) HONORED WITH A WOOD DESIGN AWARD. Live Oak Bank 2 expands the existing Live Oak campus, located in a long leaf pine forest in the heart of Wilmington. The design maintained the owner’s goal to preserve the pines and live oaks growing on the previously undeveloped site with facilities which “sit lightly on the land.” The exterior palette of locally-sourced cypress siding and high-performance glass helps the structure to blend into the environment. RICHLAND TWO INSTITUTE OF INNOVATION (CAE) HONORED WITH AN A4LE AWARD. R2i2 serves as an interactive hub offering resources to the entire community. The vision for the facility is a multigenerational “fishbowl of learning” that creates active, highly visible educational spaces to encourage engagement and collaboration. The building brings together community resource spaces, administrative offices, student learning lab spaces, a kitchen/dining area, and a multipurpose conference center with an adjacent catering kitchen. CLT OFFICE ENJOYING THEMSELVES ON A STROLL THROUGH THE CITY ON NATIONAL WALKING DAY
In 2018, we remained passionately committed to our goal to be the best architectural firm in which to work in the Southeast. We strive for continuous improvement in creating an excellent workplace. A few of our 2018 initiatives include: High Performance Paid Time Off (HPPTO), which allowed employees to enjoy the winter holiday closure without using vacation days due to extraordinary performance throughout the year Discretionary profit-sharing 401(k) contributions for all eligible employees so that no employee has to forgo saving for retirement Our focus on work-life balance flexibility and our flex-direct policy Wellness initiatives tailored to each office, with options including onsite fitness sessions, Wellness Wednesdays, free flu shots, CPR training, and healthy snacks Our progress on savvy consumership which allowed us to reduce health insurance costs by up to 33% Onboarding refinements which make it easier for new hires to acclimate and get up to speed Firmwide PM training Redesigned summer internship program encompassing 10 weeks of project reviews, “business supports practice� discussions, and many other topics in weekly lunch and learns Our strong support of community engagement Our Caring site which supports employees facing challenges New initiatives for 2019 including firmwide Project Architect training, Our ongoing commitment to supporting emerging professionals and AXP candidates

LIVE WORK PLAY
In 2018 we created and filled an exciting new leadership position. Elaine Gallagher Adams, LS3P’s new Sustainability Director, will lead the firm’s high performance design efforts. Elaine brings unparalleled expertise and experience to this role, having previously worked for Rocky Mountain Institute and led high performance design efforts for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Elaine will lead the firm’s Green Team and sustainability initiatives and will be an invaluable project resource for sustainability charettes and design strategies. Devki Wright served as Chair of the Green Team through this transition, and we thank her for her leadership and dedication to this group and her willingness to serve as a firmwide resource for sustainability, the annual Earth Day Challenge, AIA 2030 reporting, and other key initiatives. Women in Leadership Initiatives This year we hosted a series of discussions focused on issues unique to women in the field of architecture and Supporting Women in Leadership (SWiL). Open to all staff members, these “Sip ‘n’ SWiL” discussions were led by our HR team in conjunction with a rotating panel of LS3P’s female leaders. The productive and enlightening conversations addressed current statistics (both at LS3P and in the wider industry) as well as challenges, strategies, and initiatives to improve equity in architecture. Leadership by Design Fellows Our 2018 Leadership by Design Fellows (featured to the right) participated in three intensive educational sessions which offered a focused view of the firm’s practice from a design leader’s perspective.

LEADING THE WAY
George Temple, our Executive Vice President for Business, embraces the philosophy that “Business Supports Practice,” and led efforts in 2018 that improved LS3P’s technology, expanded our facilities, and focused on our people. The firm made significant investments in new software and workstations, encouraged wider use of visualization tools such as Enscape, and installed a new laser cutter in the GSP office for firmwide use. The Healthcare team is currently working closely with our technology team to pilot dRofus, a powerful building data management tool. (Contact Technology Leader Darrell Puffer for details.) In 2018, the firm modified or expanded three of our offices to accommodate growth. In Charleston, renovations created additional conference rooms and charette space as well as a VR lab. In Charlotte, modifications included an expanded break area, new conference rooms, and upgraded lobby lighting (contact Wil Drennan for details.) Raleigh’s office expansion, which will add new workstations, phone rooms, and a respite room, will be completed in the first quarter of 2019. Task chairs were replaced in Charlotte, Columbia, and Charleston for better ergonomics and comfort. Through internal initiatives and strategic hires, our team also increased inter-office collaboration on projects, which helped improve overall utilization of firmwide resources. Our Data Managers, with the leadership of Katie Robinson and Melissa Strickland, have been successful in collecting and documenting key data and metrics on projects, a task which is invaluable in our Knowledge Management efforts. We also added three team members, Daniel Mai, Blakely Goldsmith, and Samantha Watson, to our Human Resources staff.

Last summer, LS3P welcomed 21 student interns. These talented future architects participated in an immersive seven-week program focusing on professional development and collaboration. In 2018, we celebrated the lives of two team members we lost. Though we grieved at their passing, we are ever grateful for the time we spent in their company. Denise Partridge passed away in March after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Denise led LS3P’s finance team for fourteen years with kindness, humor, and grace; everyone who had the pleasure of working with Denise is better for having known her. Brian Tressler passed away in April after a sudden illness. Brian worked as a project manager in our Charlotte office, and will be remembered for his smiling face and laughter. Brian first joined the office when it was still TBA2 in 1996, and we were so pleased to welcome him back to the team in 2017. Throughout the year, we supported team members through our Caring announcements. In difficult times we draw strength from our community, and we believe we can lighten the loads of those facing challenges through compassion and encouragement.

LIFE TRIBUTE
Caring for one another and our communities is one of our most important core values. In 2018, we donated over 400 hours to community organizations. Office teams participated in events supporting CANstruction, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, American Cancer Society, Activate Good, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and others. Many of our team members dedicated their time to training our next generation of architects through career days, academic involvement with our architecture schools, or the ACE Mentor program. Still others volunteered with their local Chambers of Commerce, Rebuild Upstate, the Rotary Club, food banks, faith-based organizations, and so many other community organizations. Our fourth annual Earth Day competition raised the bar for our office-led projects related to sustainability. Projects were exemplary and impactful across the board, but the Savannah office team stood out from the crowd with a butterfly hut for the local YMCA’s community garden. The replicable design used commonly available materials, upcycled palettes, and two-liter bottles for an eye-catching, kid-friendly design. Severe weather, a perennial element of life in the Southeast, created substantial challenges this year impacting each of our offices. Hurricane Florence, a catastrophic and slow-moving Category 4 hurricane, made landfall on North Carolina’s coast and dropped unprecedented amounts of rain. In the wake of the devastating flooding in Wilmington, LS3P’s employees from all offices offered shelter, office space, supplies, and encouragement to our Wilmington staff, our clients and colleagues, and those most in need in the community. A few short weeks after the storm, LS3P was able to present a $13,000 check to Wilmington’s Salvation Army. These funds included a $5000 corporate gift from the firm, $4000 in generous individual contributions from LS3P employees, and an additional $4000 match for these contributions from LS3P. The holiday season brought additional opportunities to support our communities. In celebration of LS3P’s 55th anniversary, each office pledged to donate 55 items (meals, coats, hours, or other important gifts) to local community organizations. As always, our office teams were creative, enthusiastic, and generous with their ideas and donations for a significant positive impact.

Brandi Ratliff passed away unexpectedly in January, 2019. Brandi served as LS3P’s Corporate Marketing Coordinator, and since 2005 was an anchor, an advice giver, a “fixer,” and a dear friend in the Raleigh office. A selfless colleague with a passion for rescue commitment to excellence in every endeavor. Brandi helped to create our first Year in Review in 2017. She found so much joy in celebrating our firm and our team members. Her creativity and careful attention to detail throughout these pages is an enduring reminder of her dedication to us all.
