elcome to the June issue of LS26 Local, your free monthly community newszine.

We really have a crammed packed issue this month with some articles and features all about local charities and community groups.

This month we have a theme about local mining.

Our main historical article is all about mining in Methley and how the industry helped to mould the village. The great people at the Methley Archive helped us to put the article together and kindly allowed us to use some of their resources.

They have a brand new website and it really is worth a visit - details of their website is on page 5.

We were also lucky enough to be invited to the opening of the ‘Blot on the landscape’ mining exhibition at Temple Newsam House. Many thanks to Helen Pratt the community curator and Sue Child a volunteer at the house who invited us along. You can read all about the opening ceremony and the exhibition itself on page 6. It really is worth a visit.

While you chill out in the garden this month and enjoy the summer sun why not have a go at our prize crossword, this month there is a £10 Rhubarb Triangle farm shop voucher up for grabs.

We also have lots of other great articles, but as usual I won’t spoil whats beyond this opening page, it’s much more fun to flick through the pages and discover them for yourself!

A little bit of news about LS26 Local as a company.

Last month we registered as a ‘Community Interest Company’. This means that any profit we make will go right back into the community.

As you know our ethos is to promote local charities, community groups and clubs and give them a platform and voice to let everyone know about what they do and who they can help. Sometimes people need help but they simply don’t know who is out there to offer a helping hand.

We can also help promote fundraising events by publishing articles or running a listing on our Whats On pages. We cover print and production costs by selling advertising, but we want to be in the position that when we make profit, it goes right back into the community. By being a ‘CIC’ it means we operate transparently and those who advertise with us know that they are contributing to their local community as well as promoting their own business. Lets make our community the best it can be - together!

This just leaves me to thank all our stockists, advertisers and of course you the reader. We have been publishing our magazine for almost a year now and the feedback we have received has been overwhelming.

METHLEY & MICKLETOWN

BUILT ON COAL & COURAGE

The Methley area has a long history of coal mining which can be traced back over 650 years, when, according to the book. “The history of Methley” a written record states that at the Manor Court in 1341, One Hugo Wyland was accused of digging up coal without a license, he claimed he wasn’t aware that he needed one and he was fined half a mark.

Coal has lain in our area for over 300 million years and as we know the area is synonymous with the industry. Methley is no exception.

As with most coal mining areas, coal was mined locally and in Methley, records show that the Foxholes pit and Parlour pit had been in existance since the 14th century to service the domestic needs of the village.

However, from the 18th century there was an intensification of activity. Initially Bell pits and drill mines were used to increase production and by the mid 19th century the demand for coal increased rapidly. Deep coal mining began in Methley in the 19th century, with the sinking of the Junction Pit, Savile Pit and Newmarket Pit. These developments led to an influx of workers and their families into the area, population levels rose dramatically. The housing and supporting infrastructure required to accommodate the influx radically changed and the village was moulded around its growing mining industry.

Junction Colliery - disputes & lock outs.

The mine was sited at the top of Junction Hill.

It’s tall chimney was a local landmark. Benjamin Burnley commenced sinking in 1845 and the pit started production in 1851. Eight years later, Burnley sold the colliery to Briggs & Co. By the 1860’s relations between the owners and workers had broken down due to cost cutting steps imposed by Briggs & Co and the resulting hardship suffered by the coal miners and their families in Methley and Whitwood. The build up to the dispute began in the June of 1863 when

the men, having had to accept a wage cut then refused a later request to riddle (screen) the coal before filling the tubs.

This then resulted in the men being locked out and subsequently evicted from their homes along with their wives, children and belongings.

The dispute rolled on for 6 months with workers only reported to be returned to regular work by January the following year.

One such interesting fact was the Bay Horse Inn in Methley was used for meetings during this dispute and became a foundation of the developing Miners Association After experiencing flooding problems around the start of the 20th century the pit was modified and used only for ventilation for the near by Whitwood and Savile mines. The pit was closed in 1958.

Newmarket Colliery - manpower strong.

Newmarket Colliery was one of the oldest working pits in the country. It was sunk in 1837 by the Fentons who at the time owned many pits in the area and was later owned by the Charlesworths.

Production was initially by hand pick, shovel and wedge, filled into small corves (a small basket for carrying coal) or tubs by children.

In the 1920’s an air compressed coal cutter was used in the Silkstone seam. This seam was mined until the 1940’s. Later developments included conveyor systems, cutters and use of explosives.

Amazingly though the hard task of using pick and

shovel lasted 120 years and only came to an end when power loading was introduced in the late 1950’s.

Newmarket closed in 1983 after being phased out over an 18 month period after being classed as being no longer economical. The 600 men who helped produce 4,000 tons of coal were almost all offered redeployment in the Selby coal fields.

At the time of closure, Newmarket was the second oldest pit in the area.

Savile Colliery - changed a skyline.

In 1874 two 14ft. diameter shafts were sunk to the Haigh Moor seam at a depth of 430 foot.

The colliery was owned by Briggs & Co until Nationalisation in 1947 and was located at the west end of Main Street, Mickletown.

The village population grew rapidly from just over 1000 at the beginning of the 19th century to over 4,000 by 1901 due solely to the influx of people who sought work at the colliery. What was once a scenic, rural village with an agricultural existance, became a semi-industrial area with a chimney spouting black smoke dominating the sky line.

The Colliery existed for another 100 years until 1983 when the mine was scheduled for closure. The NCB stated the combination of geological problems and the exhaustion of all workable seams signalled the mine should cease production. The mine eventually closed two years later after receiving a short stay of execution

caused by the national miners’ strike of 1984 on August 23rd, 1985, A workforce of once around 400 had been scaled down to 270 at the time of its closure. Many of those left in the August of 1985 were redeployed in the Selby coal fields.

BLOT ON THE LANDSCAPE?

LS26 Local were honoured to be invited to the opening ceremony of the new mining exhibition ‘Blot on the landscape’ which was held at Temple Newsam House on Friday 10th May. The event was attended by local media as well as ex-Yorkshire miners, the Swillington Elderberries and Leeds City museum representatives and volunteers who helped to create the exhibition.

The Drighlington Brass Band performed various well known favourites including the famous theme from ‘Last of the Summer wine’ written

by Ronnie Hazlehurst. If this was not enough of a treat. the ‘Many Voices Choir’ of Wakefield then 6

performed an adapted version of ‘Deep down in my soul’ re-performed as ‘Deep down digging coal’ and a fantastic rendition of the Beatles 1965 hit ‘In my life’.

Blot on the landscape is a community led exhibition, which tells the story of the open cast mining that underpinned the landscape of the Temple Newsam estate for so many years.

The exhibition comprises of numerous mining artifacts including the fabulous Bower Unit banner, a rag rug that was made by the Elderberries of Swillington, plus lots of photographs and information about the open cast mining days and the people and animals who worked there.

There are also some very interesting audio transcripts from those who worked in the industry.

These include stories about the life of the miner, the lofthouse mining disaster, and how the industry changed over the years. There are even stories about the ponies that were stabled at Temple Newsam.

BARNBOW TO HOST

CHARITY FUNDRAISER FOR SNAPS

Next month on July 5th the Barnbow Social Club in Crossgates will be holding a fundraising event to benefit the Leeds based charity SNAPS. SNAPS (Special Needs And Parent Support) offer physiotherapy and social activities to children with special needs and disabilities of all kinds.

The charity covers all of Leeds and has two sites, one based in North Leeds at ‘Penny Field’ which is located on Tongue Lane in Meanwood and one based in South Leeds at ‘Broomfield’ which is located on Broom Place in Belle Isle.

Their aim is to support the entire family, by enabling the child, along with siblings, parents and other carers to participate in a shared experience of physical activity, fun and conversation in relaxed, friendly surroundings, supported by dedicated and professional staff.

They provide physiotherapist led hydrotherapy and rebound sessions, plus other activities such as swimming, soft toy play, arts and crafts, dance, sign and sing, boccia (a bowls style game), storytelling and music therapy.

The charity has also recently launched a new football club which gives the children the chance of being part of a team and to play the sport that so many children enjoy and are influenced by.

Unfortunately many children with disabilities miss out on playing sports and experiencing the camaraderie that being part of a team brings and the opportunity to learn new skills.

Lora Bedford who lives in the Rothwell area, who’s son Phoenix has attended SNAPS for the past two years, says the charity has helped them immensely, she said: “As a parent of a little boy aged 3 with Cerebral Palsy, SNAPS gives us a real

sense of belonging somewhere, in a situation that can be quite isolating”.

Lora also said that the therapy the charity offers helps her son Phoenix with his physical and social development.

“Phoenix accesses Rebound therapy which helps to work his muscles through the use of movement of a trampoline”.

“He also enjoys time socialising with other children and enjoys an open space to use his walker to get around. He particularly enjoys it when they have music therapy and he can use the instruments and sing”.

The fundraising evening at Barnbow Social Club will raise money to ensure the charity can keep offering their incredible services to children all across the city.

The event will be hosted by its own DJ and will have a raffle, bingo plus an auction during the fun filled evening.

COUNCILLORS NEWS

I was back at the count as a candidate just a year after being re-elected. I’d found myself down to one Rothwell Labour councillor and up for election again straightaway. Normally, when a councillor is elected it is for a four- year term. The pressure was on big time, which I don’t mind, I was up for the challenge!

But Brexit changed everything. There were a lot of very angry people on the doorstep and on social media. I can’t blame them. The response had changed unbelievably from last year. Labour’s position on Brexit isn’t straightforward and it 8

cost us hundreds of votes. Time and time again I, and other local volunteers, spoke to local voters only to be met with anger about Jeremy Corbyn and Brexit. It didn’t matter that these were local elections about roads, parks, libraries, old folks’ homes and bin collections.. People were angry about Brexit, even though as a local councillor I don’t have a say about what happens in Westminster.

I was gutted when the result came through. It was lovely to see the support throughout the ward, but particularly in certain areas as the boxes came in – on difficult issues that residents had stuck with us.

On issues such as the Wood Lane parking issue where votes confirmed my conversations with residents who were more interested in solving the problem than in the petty blame game the Lib Dem councillors were playing I sincerely hope that they will actually do some work to solve the problem, which they didn’t for the last 12 months.

Although we didn’t get to bed until 3am the morning of the result, it was fantastic that me and the hubby got to go and see our daughter play in her school band that night. It was a real tonic and brought a huge smile to my face to see her and the other young people perform the instruments they’ve been learning at the gig. Our local schools should be proud that they have teachers and students with such creative passion, I was very proud as a mum. Then we went away for the bank

holiday weekend to Chester and North Wales to spend some family time which was just what I needed. But I was sorry to miss the May Day festival I’ve loved supporting every year. We especially love cheering on the ducks in the duck race and our daughter has loved it since she was small.

It is all a bit unreal suddenly not being Rothwell’s councillor any more. I have to keep reminding myself when I wake up on a morning not to go and do a surgery or not go to Civic Hall that day to discuss what needs doing in Rothwell - It’s going to take a bit of getting used to !

Together we achieved a lot in Rothwell and whilst out and about I’m reminded of how I helped to make a difference. I feel proud when I look at our new fire station that would have been lost.

When I see improvements like the new playgrounds in Springhead Park and Woodlesford Park and earlier ones on Wood Lane estate and Carlton. When I see the Windmill Youth Club we saved together. Road safety improvements like the speed indicating devices crossings and 20 mph zones. The Rothwell college re-opening. And lots more we’ve done together.

We have a group of great Rothwell Labour Party members in Rothwell who are members of community groups, school governors, help at local litter picks and action days. They all care a lot about our community and for Rothwell Labour Party. Unlike the Liberal Democrats, all of

our election literature was delivered by hand by party members who are a part of our community.

A huge thank you to you all for your hard work, support and help.

The Rothwell Liberal Democrats give the Tories an easy ride, blaming the council for things the government is responsible for. Things like HS2, local people suffering through austerity, the housing crisis and relaxation of planning laws.

It’s easy for them to criticise, snipe and moan because they never have to take responsibility for any of the vital services we all depend on.

I’m proud that although the council budget has been cut in half by the government, services which have been axed elsewhere such as Rothwell children’s centres have been kept open.

Rothwell library has not only been kept open, but has extended hours in the new community hub while libraries elsewhere have shut. We still have regular youth clubs where they’ve been axed by

other councils. Because these are priorities for the Labour council.

I really don’t think anything we could have done locally would have changed this particular result.

But it does make you reassess everything and know that you can always strive to do better and I know that so much more needs to be done in Rothwell and all our villages, I would’ve loved to carry on doing that.

I’ve put my heart and soul into being Rothwell’s councillor for eight years and loved working with everyone to get the best for our area. Some local people have said it’s been great to have a mum like them with a school age child representing them as it’s reassuring to have someone who understood their issues better.

The people in Rothwell, Woodlesford, Oulton and Carlton are the best. Thank you to everyone for your kind messages of support. Your good wishes and support have meant so much to me. I’m sad not just for me, but far more for Rothwell not to have a Labour councillor who can work with the Labour council to get the best possible deal for our area. However you look at it, Lib Dems are a group of eight councillors on Leeds City Council, not important enough to be relevant or make a difference. Labour has 57 and the Conservatives have 23.

All I can say is even a week is a long time in politics and that’s truer now than it ever was!

ALTERNATIVES TO DAIRY

Cow’s milk is considered dietary staple by many.

It’s rich in protein and important vitamins and minerals, including calcium, phosphorus and B vitamins. But some people can’t or don’t drink cow’s milk at all due to personal preferences, dietary restrictions, allergies or intolerances.

2–3% of children under the age of three are allergic to cow’s milk although most grow out of it. The allergy can cause a range of symptoms, including rashes, upset tummies and even anaphylaxis.

Lactose intolerance is very common. Lactose is a sugar found in cow’s milk. People with lactose intolerance can not digest this sugar so it stays in their digestive tract which eventually causes symptoms such as wind, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and pains and nausea.

Vegans exclude all products from their diet that originate from animals, and some people simply do not like the taste of cow’s milk.

So, what is available for those who prefer a nondairy alternative?

Soy Milk Made with either soybeans or soy protein isolate, and often contains thickeners and vegetable oils. It typically has a mild and creamy flavour. It has a similar nutritional make-up to cow’s milk, and works best in cooking, in coffee and on cereal.

Almond Milk (or other nut milks) This is made with either whole almonds or almond butter and water (cashew, hazelnut and macadamia nut milks are also available). Nut milks have a light texture and a slightly sweet and nutty flavour. They contain fewer calories and fat thank cow’s milk but are also significantly lower in protein and carbohydrates. They can be added to coffee and tea, used on cereal, mixed in smoothies and used as milk in desserts and baked goods.

Coconut Milk Made from water and the white flesh of brown coconuts. It has a creamy texture and a sweet, subtle coconut flavour. It contains less fat than cow’s milk and significantly less protein and carbohydrates. It can be used on cereal and in smoothies and cooking.

Oat Milk Made from a mixture of oats and water. It is high in soluble fibre, which is good for gut health. It is naturally sweet with a mild flavour and can be used in cooking in the same way as cow’s milk.

It is also good for use on cereal or in smoothies.

Rice Milk Made from milled white or brown rice and water this is the least likely milk substitute to trigger allergies, which makes it a safe option for those with allergies or intolerances to dairy, gluten, soy or nuts. It is mild in taste and naturally sweet and is nice to drink on its own as well as in smoothies, or in desserts or over cereal. It is not a good choice for children or the elderly because of its low protein content, and it has a high glycaemic index so is not good for diabetics either.

There is no one milk substitute that is ideal for everyone. The taste, nutrition and cost of these alternatives can vary considerably, so it is worth taking a while to experiment and find those that work best for you.

MONTHLY RECIPE

This month’s recipe is a nice take on sweet ‘n’ sour pork, it is suitable for barbecue cooking perfect for a warm summer evening, with a nice bottle of wine and some good company!

PORK AND PINEAPPLE KEBABS Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 10-15 minutes Serves 4

Ingredients ~ 400g Pork fillet ~ 4 tbsp Light muscovado sugar ~ 60ml Cider vinegar ~ 1 tsp Asian fish sauce ~ ½ Small pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks (or use ready prepped fresh pineapple which has been drained well)

~ 1 Pepper (any colour), deseeded and cut into squares ~ Spanish onion, chopped into chunks ~ Small bunch coriander, chopped (optional) ~ Boiled rice or pitta pockets are ideal to serve this dish with.

Method Cut the pork into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar in a pan over a low heat until the sugar melts. Then add the fish sauce and let it cool.

Tip in the pork and mix well so that all the cubes are covered in sauce.

Heat the barbecue, or a griddle pan or grill. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and Spanish onion. You can use whatever onions you have but Spanish are more delicate in flavour and sweeten nicely when grilled.

Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 3 to 4 minutes on each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling). Serve with rice or slide into pitta pockets 11

HOME SECURITY

The summer holidays are just around the corner.

We put a lot of effort into planning our perfect summer break, but we often don’t put quite as much effort into making sure that while we’re away relaxing our home is safe Most burglars are opportunists, who target empty homes. This means that the holiday season is bonanza time for them. However, a little preparation can save a lot of distress. 60 percent of burglars gain entrance through rear or side windows and doors so make securing these a priority.

Fences and hedges are the first line of defence against uninvited guests so should act as an effective barrier, rather than just being attractive borders. The Metropolitan Police recommend ‘hostile plants’; plants that are spiky, prickly or very dense. Don’t let them grow too high though, your home should be visible from the street and to your neighbours. The idea is not to provide a hiding place for intruders! Protect the entrance to your property too. If a gate isn’t practical, consider covering pathways with gravel. Thieves don’t like to announce their presence and the sound of footsteps on gravel is often enough to put them off entering.

Motion-activated lighting and well-lit paths and driveways are also a good deterrent. Outside security lighting is cheap to set up, and low energy light bulbs keep running costs down.

Also, consider installing a burglar alarm - as well as protecting your property, having an alarm can also lower your insurance premiums.

While you’re away on holiday, some extra precautions will help protect your possessions.

Keep valuables out of sight. If they can be seen, then someone might be tempted to try to steal them. Don’t close curtains in the daytime though, as this announces to the world that your house is empty. Invest in timer switches to turn lights and the radio on and off. Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries.

Inform a couple of trusted neighbours that you will be away. Ask them to keep an eye on your property and offer to do the same for them while they are away. Little tasks like moving the post away from the door, and drawing your curtains in the evening will make it look as though someone is in. They could even park a car on your drive if you are taking yours away. Offer to do the same for them when they go on holiday.

Join your Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, or if there isn’t a local scheme, set one up.

Neighbourhood Watch has an excellent track record of deterring opportunistic thieves.

A little vigilance and some common sense go a long way to protecting the things you love.

Follow these simple steps and you will be able to relax on holiday knowing your home is as safe as it can be.

June is a lovely month of the year and it’s the time when roses will be in full bloom. This means it’s time to keep an eye out for aphid and black spot attacks! As soon as you see a sign of these blighters it’s prudent to treat the plant immediately. If you are using insecticide do not spray on to the flower blooms as you can risk killing pollinators such as Bees and Butterflies.

Black spot is a fungal disease and needs to be treated with fungicide, but an old treatment is to mix bicarbonate of soda and water and spray on to roses, or you can also try a mixture of milk and

water and spray weekly (as we mentioned in last months issue).

After the first flush of flowers apply rose fertiliser.

You can also encourage fresh rosebuds to grow by ‘deadheading’ any faded flowers Remember to weed as often as you can to prevent weeds from taking the moisture out of the soil around your roses.

For those growing veg it’s just as important to keep those weeds at bay so hoe regularly or they will take over! It’s also a good time to pinch out side shoots on Tomatoes, harvest Lettuce, Radish and other salads and early Potatoes.

Tall plants will need supporting now as they start to grow vigorously, plants like Delphiniums, Lupins and Hollyhocks will benefit from being tied to a garden cane or a wall or fence.

If you have climbing plants you can tie in any side shoots to train them along trellis or wire supports, keep the ties loose enough to allow them to sway in the wind.

You can also now position your hanging baskets and containers outside and plant out summer bedding, but don’t forget the lawn, mow at least once a week and water in hot weather.

The longest day is June 21st, so don’t work all the time in your garden, when the jobs are done sit down and enjoy all the beauty of your garden and hard work, after all, you will have to do it all again next year !

AN UPDATE ON ‘FORCE’

One of the most iconic buldings in Rothwell is to this day still stood unused but certainly not unloved. Since it’s closure three years ago, a campaign group known as FORCE (Friends Of Rothwell Civic Enterprise) have been working behind the scenes to try and bring the old civic buildings back into use and run as a civic enterprise.

We contacted councillor Camel Harrison and asked her a few questions about the campaign and how it is progressing.

At what stage are we with the campaign?

The deadline is ticking towards a submission in June. Although there are no alternative plans put forward for the building we have to get our business case ready for then. This means potential uses, financial projections, timetable of works. We also have to demonstrate community use and the existing links we have forged with community groups. In the final stages evidence is critical to our case.

If a business plan to secure its future is achieved, could the group secure the building as an ‘Asset of Community Value’ (ACV)?

The devil is in the detail. We are at the stage of having a proper survey of the building carried out. This will highlight structural and remedial works needed. For example what would need to be done to comply with Health & Safety, essential Mechanical & Electrical works, broadband installations, making the building accessible for all users to all levels etc. We are also asking for costs to bring the building to a standard for use as an enterprise, arts and community centre so the surveyors could highlight internal layout work that could or should be done. Depending on the costs and our ability to attract support funding then we could create a Rothwell Enterprise, Art and Cultural Hub for everyone in the town and

surrounding villages to use. In short, if we can satisfy and demonstrate that we could meet the criteria it would be a Community Asset Transfer effectively owned by Rothwell people.

There has been lots of ideas about how the building could be used, could the building be used for a multitude of purposes or are there restrictions to its use?

There are no restrictions that we are aware of relating to use. Any restrictions could be due to structural confines, or possibly dependant on grants that we access. All of those and many other ideas such as an event space for weddings, christenings or corporate hire, arts, use for small gigs or film clubs.

How does the group think the building should be used?

There is a healthy appetite in Rothwell from all the surveys we have conducted suggesting a mixed use space that would have appeal for the whole community.

Business space i.e. affordable offices for small or start-up businesses is non- existent in Rothwell.

There is a shortage of small meeting rooms for community groups and there is also potential for a performance space for the varied theatre, music and arts groups in the area.

We would like to provide fully serviced office space for existing small businesses to generate

employment and boost the existing town centre economy. At the same time, I am passionate about encouraging young entrepreneurs so we are hoping to provide incubation space for start ups and collaboration space. The building lends itself to so many uses and we want to keep it as fluid as possible.

Does FORCE have an idea of the amount of revenue that would be required to renovate the building and where would the funds come from?

All of this will be in the final business plan. Until the survey is issued we won’t know costs, although we have some ideas. We are currently looking at grants and community loan options.

Depending on costs, when we get the green light and funding, work could start on renovating the building fairly quickly.

For anyone who wants to help FORCE, what can they do?

FORCE needs more people to volunteer to collate information for the business plan and help with research and proof reading. When finished this could be a real enterprise, arts, culture and community hub for everyone, so anyone who may want to rent space should get in touch to share their ideas.

METHLEY’S SCARECROW FESTIVAL

This years Methley Scarecrow festival will be held over the weekend of 6th and 7th July with the scarecrows on view from 10am to 4pm. This year’s theme is Heroes and Villains, although there will be all sorts of characters out and about!

We had chat with Andrea Arnold who is part of Team Scarecrow who told us more about the event: “Methley Scarecrow Festival has been running since 2006, and was initially set up by the good folks of Methley and Mickletown in Bloom

(MMIB). A small team of scarecrow fans have taken over from the MMIB team in the last few years and have now taken it into the world of social media - the scarecrows have even created their own twitter page for the 2019 festival!

There are usually around 100 scarecrows spread all around the village that people from far and wide come to visit over the weekend!

The event is all about community spirit and fun so nobody has to pay to make a scarecrow or visit.

We sell maps and raffle tickets, plus we have stalls around the village which will be raising funds for Methley and Mickletown in Bloom and other local community groups.

The maps will be on sale in local shops for the week running up to the event, and will be available on the weekend itself on the various stalls and at the Scarecrow H.Q at St Margaret’s Hall in the middle of the village.

If you live outside of the village but would like to take part, there are plenty of houses happy to display a scarecrow for the weekend - get in touch if you’ve always fancied making one and we’ll find a garden for it!

THE LEEDS & ROTHWELL LADIES CIRCLE

The Leeds and Rothwell Ladies Circle have been in touch to let you know all about their future plans plus what they have got up-to in the last year. The ladies love getting together for fun, fundraising and of course supporting our local community.

Here’s what they have to say: Our current chair,Helen Douglas, is coming to the end of her year in charge, so we thought we’d let you know what we’ve been up to. Helen’s chosen charity of the year was Candlelighters a local charity based in Leeds providing much needed 22

support to children with cancer along with their families. It is an amazing charity and we are so pleased to announce that over the course of the year we raised just over £2,000.

2018 was the year we turned 50 and we held our birthday party at Salute here in Rothwell back in October. We were delighted to welcome our national president Jo to the event, along with many past members some of whom were in the original founding circle. There was a display of memorabilia along with some DVDs which showed what the ladies got up to when we were set up. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all and we raised money at the event towards our charity of the year.

In November it was our great honour, as always, to attend the Remembrance Day service at Rothwell’s Cenotaph laying our circle’s wreath in hour of all those who gave their lives for our future. It’s a very moving event and it was lovely to see so many of the community show their respect especially as the weather was less than perfect.

We also organised and ran our Free Family event Santa in the Park again in 2018 and it was amazing. Prior to the event the ladies got together to make the all important reindeer food which is distributed to all the attending children as they meet or wait to meet the main man himself Mr Claus. Thankfully the weather was kind to us so attendance was up on the year before, the rain was not our friend in 2017. We changed things

up in 2018 having Santa arrive by fire engine along with the local police coming to support us. The children really enjoyed the addition of a fire engine to go on, a police car to explore and a Hook a Duck game to play. As always we held our ladies circle tombola and were once again please to have our hot food and sweetie stalls in attendance. Thanks to the kind donations of all those attending the event, for the first time in a few years we were able to run the event for free and make a donation to our charity of the year.

This along with seeing all the happy childrens’ faces make it so worth while.

We also supported our local round table in Wakefield and the Rothwell Lions with their Santa Sleigh activities. Helping to collect money for their charities as Santa did his rounds in the local area . Who doesn’t love a Christmas jumper and we met up for pre Christmas drinks wearing ours at Tobias here in Rothwell in December.

Our group do like to go out and this past year has been no exception.

• We went to Junkyard Golf in Leeds city centre which was a great afternoon. If you’ve not been it is worth a look if you like crazy golf, loud music, flashing lights, retro drinks (think Hooch) and retro pick n mix. Its unlike any crazy golf we’ve ever seen – strictly over 18s only too.

• The more adventurous members went to try their luck at Tick Tock Unlock in Leeds and I am pleased to say that the ladies escaped having a great time in the process.

• We also tried our luck at the local pub quiz at the Hare and Hounds earlier this year and I won’t say we won, because we didn’t, in fact we weren’t very good at all but we had a laugh and that is what it was all about.

• The last opportunity to raise further funds for our charity was a trip to The Style Attic which is now in Swillington an evening of nibbles and shopping was truly lovely and somewhere we would definitely recommend to those ladies wanting some new clothes.

• Most recently some of the ladies got together in Leeds for a few drinks and nibbles - another good night with friends.

To achieve our fabulous sum of money for Candlelighters not only did we raise funds at the events mentioned, but a couple of ladies were supported by their work places to add additional funds. JLT undertook the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge, a bucket collection was held at a Lloyds

Banking Group location and Lloyd’s also provided matched funding for our hard work. All of this meant we were able to make the large donation which we know will make a difference.

There are many different things we do, some of which are detailed above and in the past we have made Christmas Wreathes, Gone to a Roller Disco, Undertaken some local park runs, organised a Body Shop Party and ran a Fashion Show amongst many other things.

Our Facebook page is the best way to keep an eye on what we are up to and we are always looking for more members. So if you are aged between 18 and 45 and fancy giving a local ladies group a try then check us out. ROTHWELL FOODBANK?

A sign of recent times and austerity is the growth of and need for foodbanks. In the last five years, foodbank use in the United Kingdom has increased by 73%. The need for Foodbanks is growing and although they are a sign of harsh economic times, they are invaluable to those who need them.

Roy Naylor of the Leeds South and East Foodbank told us a bit more about our own foodbank and how you can get help if you need it: “Leeds South and East foodbank was formed in 2013 and we run twelve sites in Leeds, these include Gildersome, Drighlington, Hunslet, Belle Isle, Gipton, Seacroft and of course Rothwell.

We are looking to open more sites to make it easier for those in need, to access a local foodbank.

We are a member of the Trussel Trust which is the largest foodbank organisation in England, and collates data from its sites to feed information on foodbank use to the government The Rothwell food bank is based at the Rothwell Fire station and was opened in 2014. The Fire service have been very supportive of the foodbank as they are with the local community as a whole.

We are very grateful for their help and support.

The number of food parcels given out in the Leeds area has increased by 30 percent over the same period last year, which underlines the need for foodbanks. Rothwell foodbank has helped 214 adults and 93 children since the start of this year The main reasons for using a foodbank can be low income, benefit delay or benefit changes although there are many other reasons for needing a foodbank” What if I need the help of a Foodbank?

“To access a food bank you need to obtain a voucher from a referral agent such as the Rothwell Community Hub, a doctors or school outreach organisation etc. This voucher is then exchanged for food.

There is a limit on foodbank use - a foodbank can only issue 3 food parcels per client in any 6 month period. This is because most reasons for foodbank use are resolved in a short period of time

Anyone who uses a foodbank is greeted with a drink and our volunteers will discuss their requirements / problems in confidence, and we will try and refer them on to other agencies who may be able to help resolve there issues.

Food parcels are designed to last for three days and vary in size dependant on whether the parcel is for a single person or a family. The food parcels consist of cereal, beans, vegetables, potatoes, meat, fish, juice, tea, milk. All food is tinned for storge purposes.”

Where can I donate?

“Our food banks rely entirely on donations from the public. We have collection bins in some supermarkets including Morrisons Rothwell. We also receive many regular donations from local churches.. The firemen at Rothwell fire station will accept donations during the week, We also have a wharehouse at 7 Lenton Drive Leeds LS11 5JW where donations can be left”.

How can I volunteer my help?

“Our food banks are run by volunteers and we are always looking for help which can be by volunteering at a foodbank for 2 hours a week, working in our wharehouse, or drivers to replenish stocks at our various sites. Karate is Japanese meaning “empty-hand” and is a martial art that primarily stresses the use of the hands and feet to strike, but also includes throws, locks and other effective fighting techniques.

fighting arts of China and at the start of the 20th century spread to Japan, where in the latter half of the same century it spread across the globe.

Karate’s traditional and original purpose has always been a way of using the hands and feet to avoid injury when fending off an unwanted physical attack. In accordance with Karate’s original purpose, at the club we impart suitable skills that, if needed, will support you in avoiding violence and assist you escaping from it.

Karate is also a renowned sport, akin to kick boxing that for the first time shall feature in the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. At the club we teach the sporting qualities of Karate, reaping the many benefits of effective sports training, and for those that chose to do so, we partake in local competitions.

What are the benefits of Karate?

Karate is based in the principles of respect, hard work and tenacity. Karate seeks to instil these qualities in people by allowing them to realise the importance of respect, as well as demonstrating that hard work and tenacity leads to great success.

Training in Karate develops and exercises the whole body and has many physical benefits – amongst others it improves balance, coordination, posture and flexibility, with regular training leading to a sustained healthy physical condition.

Many people who practice Karate are known to

have lived well into old age in relatively good health, often contributing this to their Karate training and therefore continue to train despite their aging years!

Karate, if practiced regularly is documented to have many mental health benefits such as an increased sense of confidence and self-esteem; this stems from regular practice where goal orientated training leads to recognised success such as the next belt or a competition trophy, which in turn promotes a positive mental attitude. Amongst other benefits Karate also allows for improved focus, concentration and leads to strengthened resolve when met with any challenging encounter, whether that be physical or otherwise.

Rothwell Karate Club is an amateur, non-profit club that has been practicing Karate for over 40 years at Rothwell Sports Centre. RODILLIANS END SEASON ON A HIGH!

Despite the odd down pour of rain the clubs recent charity rugby game held on Saturday 11th May in honour and memory of Jack Simpson (19932014) & Todd Stawecki (1961-2016) was a great success with a very good attendance. Funds raised were donated to the Wakefield Hospice.

Stanley Rodillians RUFC Juniors SectionThe Junior section ended their playing season away at Goole with the usual free flowing Rods rugby style on show by all age groups.

The club has expressed a big thank you to their three main sponsors of the season: Amirah Spice Indian & Bangladeshi Takeaway, Stepping Stones Day Nursery & Out of Hours Club Pontefract and Illuminate Letters. Thanks also go to Mick Stanley for his Hoodie sponsorship.

More thanks also go to the volunteers at the club who are an absolute essential ingredient of the clubs success, their commitment and effort has been amazing, from selling raffle tickets to helping in the kitchen and nothing could be achieved if it was not for their efforts.

The final act of the Rods Junior Section was the Presentation Evening with awards being presented to the Junior players for a fantastic season’s work. The event took the form of a curry night and was well attended by kids, parents and coaches.

Next Season the club is looking at running age groups for Under 7’s to u11’s....

Stanley Rodillians Senior Section Stanley Rodillians 29 Castleford 2nds 0 Having completed their domestic league season, Stanley Rodillians accepted an offer to play the Castleford 2nd team and took the opportunity to give a game to several new recruits.

Rods had the upper hand from the start with Jonny Carr making inroads at centre with some strong running. Brandon Marsh proved to be a handful for Castleford with his very elusive running which was also complimented by hard tackling in defence. A great half with the Rodillians leading 19-0 at half time.

The second half saw Castleford continue to press for a score but a determined Rods side kept them at bay. Luke Pell at full back had a great game, dealing well with any kicks and proving to be another elusive runner in attack. Rods mixture of seasoned players and the introduction of the younger players eventually led to a couple of more tries taking the final score to 29 – 0.

Tries came from Ryan Taylor (2) showing good pace for both his tries, Tom Goodwill (2) great determination on both occasions and 1 from Brandon Marsh who crossed untouched after a mazy run. Adam Scrafton added a couple of conversions to cap a strong game.

An enjoyable game which was played in the right spirit by both clubs.

BOWLS CLUB FUNDRAISER RAISES OVER £1500!

As we reported last month, Rothwell Bowls Club early season focus has been more towards helping club member Ian Brine following his diagnosis with MND.

Ian’s findraiser held at the club on May 3rd was a huge success, everyone enjoyed the raffle and the homemade food and Brines Beer went down a treat! (many thanks to Elland Brewery).

On the green, the over 25’s team just got over the line beating the under 25’s by 20 points on aggregate with 7 winners to 5.

In the Member & Guest knockout, 16 pairs took part and although it was very relaxed there were some very competitive games.

The final was a close contest with Jon Edmondson and Darryl Harrop finishing runners up to Harry Seerah and Simon Walder (pictured left).

The club would like to express a huge thanks to everyone who donated raffle prizes, we had over 40 donated for the event, so unfortunately it’s hard to thank everyone individually.

The club aimed to raise around £750 but were delighted to absolutely smash their target with a final total raised being a fantastic £1560!

Meanwhile in competitive games, Saturdays Barkston Ash ‘A’ team are currently top of the table, while also going well in the County (Hutchinson) Cup. Likewise, the midweek afternoon teams are also going well and leading the way in their respective league. The evening teams are mid table but it’s still early in the year, so lots could change in the coming weeks and months as the games stack up.

RESPECTABLE FINISH FOR ROBIN HOOD

Robin Hood Athletic finished their season with two wins and two defeats from their final four fixtures of the domestic league season.

After defeat in the cup to Leeds City, Robin Hood found themselves with little to play for except finishing as high as possible in the league table.

The middle section of the league table was very tight with just a handful of points separating 11th position from 6th.

On May 4th Robin Hood hosted Saltaire based club Salts FC. Unfortuantely Hood finished the 28

game on the wrong side of a 7 goal thriller with Salts running out 4-3 winners. Goalscorers being Ryan Ferguson and the consistent James Finlayson who netted twice.

Hood only had to wait 4 days to get back on the pitch with another home fixture, with a visit from Huddersfield Amateurs. Hood netted three goals but this time the story was a better one with just a single goal conceded and a fine 3-1 victory. Two more goals coming from James Finlayson who has has an outstanding season. The other goal coming courtesy of Muyideen Akinwale.

Next up for Hood was an away fixture to strugglers Headingley FC. In a tight game with the hosts desperate for points to avoid a bottom three finish, Robin Hood edged it with a 2-1 win. Goals courtesy of Ryan Finlayson and Lee Bennett.

Hoods final game of the season came just two days later against local rivals and champions Carlton Athletic. With Hood missing some key players and Carlton coming into the game on the back of a 9-0 victory against Wyke Wanderers the signs were not good.

Unfortunately the signs pointed to a defeat with the champions handing out a 4-1 drubbing.

All in all Robin Hood have had a respectable season finishing eleventh but only 4 points from seventh. The preparations for the 2019-20 season begin straight away with ambitions for silverware still high on the agenda.

OULTON ATH NEEDS YOU For the 2019-20 season Oulton Athletic who are based at the Oulton and Woodlesford Sports Club, will have a second Sunday eleven a-side team which will play in the 3rd Division of the Leeds Combination League with home games taking place on Sundays at 11am.

Team manager Ethan Bragginton told us a bit more about their plans: “We are looking to recruit new players over the summer and have a squad complete by the end of August in order to compete in the new season by the beginning of September. We have a core of around 8-10 players but anyone interested in playing is welcome”.

We will be holding some trials throughout the summer and we welcome anyone who would like to play or get involved. If anyone is interested please get in touch with us on 07852 930245”.

GOLF DAY FOR MACMILLAN CHARITY

One of the longest serving members of staff at the Black Bull in Rothwell is raising funds for Macmillian Cancer Support along with her brother and his friends.

Jade Hayward, who has worked at the Black Bull since being aged just 18 was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma before Christmas. Jade was due to leave for South Africa in January to

take up a job as a Marine Biologist on a shark reserve but due to her ongoing chemotherapy had to delay her trip.

The great news is that following her treatment, Jade is now cancer free and with the support of her brother and father will be raising funds for Macmillan in appreciation of how the charity has supported Jade, her family and others going through the same experience.

Jade’s brother Simon (pictured left with Jade and their father David), had previously showed his support for his sister by shaving his head when Jade started her chemotherapy and suffered hair loss, has now organised for himself and some friends to take part in Macmillan’s ‘Longest day golf challenge’ which is a 14 hour day of golf, consisting of 72 holes, 4 rounds and over 20 miles of walking!

David’s team, known for the event as ‘Dude Where’s My Par’ will take the challenge in June and hope to raise as many funds as possible for the charity. (At the time of going to press the exact date, time and venue is unconfirmed, but details will be released on the LS26 Local website and via our facebook page).
