By Tosh Wilson 'I bought my first BMX in 1998, super cheap Universal Hammerhead. From the day I picked it up I was hooked. Although I may not get to ride it every day, I can easily say over the years BMX has kept me fit and had a positive impact on my mental health.'

So why are there benefits to people’s health when BMXing?

Research has shown us that mental health conditions such as depression, stress and anxiety can be reduced by regular bike riding. This is due to the effects of the exercise itself and because of the enjoyment BMXing can bring.

What are the benefits to regular BMXing? · Increased cardiovascular fitness · Increased muscle strength and flexibility · Improved joint mobility · improved posture and coordination · Strengthened bones · Decreased body fat · Prevention or management of disease · Reduced anxiety and depression.

Although BMXing has these great benefits to your health and wellbeing, BMXing is not just about riding on your own its a huge community. You can travel the world, head to a skatepark and instantly have a connection with someone there.

Let's have an overview of what BMX can do?

Increase in physical health, increase in mental health, helps to you to make friends, helps to travel the world, have fun, and most of all….. its awesome.

It’s crazy to think that just over a year ago the first few cases of COVID were being confirmed. It feels like we’ve been living in lockdown for years, and it’s weird to think that masks and metres apart have become the new normal.

On the plus side, wheeled sports are back on the rise! Skateboarding in particular has had a huge increase in popularity since lockdowns began, with both new skaters and those who have had a break from skating getting back on it and hitting car parks and curbs across the country.

With all these new riders, skateparks will get pretty busy.

So, what can you do at your local to make sure you’re keeping everyone safe?

SkateboardGB released an official poster with guidelines included to keep everyone safe (not just skateboarders!) when using outdoor skateparks.

Scooter Trick Tips with Josh Carter How to tailwhip!

1. First of all make sure your feet and hands are in the correct position, then take your feet off and lift your scooter in front of you slightly then moving your hands/ wrists up and down start to spin the deck around; this will build your muscle memory

2. Now you have the first motion down, get back into your stance and put your front foot on the floor in front of your body, now lift the scooter up and flick your back foot backwards, making the deck spin around your front foot then get back on your scooter. You can then start to do this while rolling around and gradually practice with more speed.

3. Step three gets a bit harder! instead of putting your front foot in front of your body, take it off the deck onto the floor as you would to push, but instead use it to push off the floor and jump in the air. as before, kick the deck backwards with your back foot making the deck spin around. Remember to get the correct height and watch out for your front foot, also make sure your flicking the deck around as you push off the floor with your front foot. (This is called a fast plant whip- you can practice with more speed each time!)

4. Finally, put all three motions together! Do a Bunny hop but as you take off, flick the deck backwards (like you would kick your bum!) and this will creat the full whip motion. Remember your stance and to get height when doing this!

Some steps may take more time than others, but with practice and dedication anyone can land their first whip!

SKate Stories!

"My name is Natalie Nicholson and I am sixteen years old. When the first lockdown started in 2020, I purchased my own skateboard so I could start to skate. I started by skating around the streets near my house, but didn’t do much more."

"My passion for skateboarding really began to grow during the second lockdown when I started skating at LS-TEN. When I first started skating in the skate park here I could ride a board but didn’t have the confidence or knowledge to perform any tricks."

"This changed within the first week of skating as my confidence started growing, I found myself doing things I never thought I could such as skating in the bowl and doing kick turns up the ramps.

Skating is a huge challenge but with the confidence to get on a board and give it a go, you receive a sense of enjoyment that is indescribable."

Four wheels, One deck Four wheels, One deck, Bolts and trucks, Covid had me stuck.

Didn’t know when, I could go outside, LS-TEN, They let me inside.

Confidence build, Training everyday, I became skilled, Skating is my escape away.

Converse shoes, Helmet on my head, Wind blowing on my face, I make sure challenges are made.

There’s a sense of freedom, When I skate, This skatepark is our kingdom, My world to create.

Skateboarding in the Olympics!

We're sure you've all heard that Skateboarding, along with 5 other new sports as part of a “Youth focus urban cluster”, will be included in the next Olympic Games!

Crazy to think that you can now become a world class athlete representing your country on the world's biggest stage, all through Skateboarding!

So, which disciplines will actually be included in Olympic Skateboarding?

Park The park event will feature bowls and transitions, with competitors scored for difficulty and originality of tricks. Think Vans Park Series, and that's pretty much Park!

Skateboarding in the Olympics!

Street The street format will probably be familiar to you already! It's all about stairs, handrails, ledges and other skatepark obstacles which you probably see at your local.

It looks like the Street scoring might be a bit different, with points awarded for difficulty of the tricks, height, speed, originality, execution, and composition.

There'll be Mens and Womens divisions in both categories, featuring names such as Nyjah Huston, Leticia Bufoni and Sky Brown we're guessing everyon'es familiar with Sky Brown, but there's a group of incredible skaters on board to represent the UK in the Olympics.

Skateboarding in the Olympics!

Great Britain has 5 skateboarders who are part of the Aspiration Funded team which is made up of Jordan Thackary, Sky Brown, Sam Beckett, Alex DeCunha and Alex Hallford.

We'll have to wait until June 2021 for the official team announcement and to hear about who will be competing!
