the The art of aging

Lananh La | Mansfield Lake Ridge High School | Division 39 South

In a world where young adulthood and youth in general are worshiped, it’s difficult to appreciate the process of aging and the elderly when it is not glorified by society. Through Key Club, I have been able to uplift the elderly with our Elevating the Elderly event by painting and creating art with the residents at a nursing home. As a high school student, my peers that I communicate with are mostly my age. Therefore, I do not get to communicate with elders and acquire the valuable wisdom and insight that they hold. Volunteering at the Elevating the Elderly event for Key Club has given me the opportunity to hold meaningful conversations with knowledgeable and friendly residents. When I first walked into the Walnut Creek Nursing Home, I was filled with a feeling of tranquility. The environment was quite peaceful and serene, especially compared to my regular environment of a busy public high school. It was interesting to see so many different residents with different and unique backgrounds. One of the residents I painted with was a man named Stanley, a bright and lively resident who was from the UK. As he painted a scenic portrait of a train station, and I a painting of the moon, we conversed about his days in Liverpool. With his humorous nature, Stanley hilariously spoke about the experience of streets in England before the toilet was brought into UK homes; Stanley created an uproar of laughter as he described how human excretion would be casually dumped onto the streets. His wonderful spirit was very uplifting and created such a memorable moment for me, and I hope that I was also able to make his day a little brighter. But in addition to his humor, he also spoke about his time as a young boy in the midst of World War II. He elaborated about the underground bunkers that citizens would use to protect themselves from the bombings. His story gave me abundant insight and broadened my horizons in many ways. It is incredible to see just how much life the elderly have lived, and truly makes you appreciate the beauty in aging. Not only did I have the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Stanley, but also other residents such as a wonderful lady who used to live in Paris.

Every single resident that I spoke with has not only encouraged me to connect with the elderly more often, but has also encouraged me to live my life to its fullest. Through Lake Ridge Key Club, the unforgettable Elevating the Elderly has been an experience to remember.

UPLIFT THROUGH EDUCATION Learn t-oday & Build the Leaders of t-omorrow

THE PROJECT: Education is the key element we see in our daily lives; it stems from a variety of topics towards the betterment of one another, and in long term growth, to the actions of individuals. Education is important in the success and continuity of the foundations of Key Club and how we grow as one: through knowledge, sharing our passion, and encouraging others. It provides unity, and it ultimately symbolizes the development for our future. The Governor's Project, Uplift through Education, strives to build the servant leaders of our District to give back to individuals in underprivileged communities through a multitude of community-driven events that focus on the empowerment and importance of education, research, and financial literacy. In addition, this project is intended to highlight that our district, as one, is unified as a team to help people from around the world who do not have access to similar resources and lesson plans to utilize in schools, universities, and beyond. As we rise together, we can uplift the many students, peers, and adults around us. It starts with education - through increasing the culture, teachings, and knowledge - from one person to another. WHY? According to a report studied by the United Nations, over 35% of children and adolescents around the world do not have access to educational resources. Compounding these inequities has created a digital divide which continues to grow, and individuals can face considerable barriers in the future without equal access - over two thirds of the percentage studied faces inaccessible technology usage within their home as well. The importance of uplifting others through education is to provide them with the opportunity to gain experiences and carry on the knowledge they obtain for their future endeavors. Many individuals around the world do not have access to di erent school-based resources because of di ering circumstances. SERVICE IDEAS: Educational workshop program (In-person and Zoom) New topics will be provided monthly ranging from mathematics to literature Write and deliver words of kindness and encouragement to students, teachers, and advisors Tutoring sessions with students
