Executive Summary

In 2023-24, faculty and staff in SCRD completed an assessment and evaluation of their educational offerings as well as the operational aspects of the school through a 6-year academic program review. The report focused on providing exceptional learning opportunities for students and reflecting on where the school is in comparison to peer institutions and within ASU through an academic program review. This report highlights our major accomplishments and strategic goals for the upcoming year.

Introduction

SCRD is dedicated to providing exceptional learning experiences and research that positively impact students and communities. This annual report outlines our strategic initiatives, performance metrics, and future plans to ensure continued growth and success.

7 community building events were held, including three undergrad pizza parties, a team at Sparky’s Challenge, one grad student end of year lunch and two happy hours with alumni

Center for Sustainable Tourism Quality Content Offerings to Community

Hosted guest speaker Robert Manning, Professor Emeritus University of Vermont, for Earth Week on the topic Lessons from the Literature: Principles of Parks, Outdoor Recreation and Tourism. Visitor study for Navajo Nation completed.

Launch of the trails study for Bryce Canyon National Park, ongoing through summer 2025.

Launch of the visitor study for Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, data collection to occur summer 2024.

GSTC sustainable tourism assessment for Montana and LA County completed. Planned GSTC sustainable tourism assessment for Palm Beach County.

Developing a research agreement with Qinghai Normal University for national park research. Center for Sustainable Tourism partnership with American Indian Alaskan Native Tourism Association on Sustainable Tourism certificate; ongoing.

Training in community

Lodestar offers professional development courses for nonprofit leaders. Key achievements this year include:

Strategic volunteer engagement with nonprofit executives via a webinar with partners: Independent Sector, National Council of Nonprofits and Volunteermatch.

Board governance with the United American Indian Involvement, Inc.

Best Skills Best Churches delivered to 42 people in Fall 2023 and 24 people in Spring 2024.

“Relevance and Purpose in your third act: a journey of discovery” delivered to 43 OLLI members in Fall 2023

Executive Leadership Certificate completed by 16 nonprofit executives in Spring 2024.

Service Enterprise Initiative assisted two more nonprofit agencies to earn accreditation in Spring 2024.

Hosted events

Lodestar-affiliated faculty and students participate in a variety of learning events throughout the year.

2023-24 saw students, faculty and staff apply their skills to host two high-level nonprofit sector events at the Downtown campus.

Community engagement in the nonprofit sector is the core of Lodestar’s work.

Noteworthy program updates this year include:

Cogenerational Service Academy awarded $20,000 in the CoGen Challenge to Advance Economic Opportunity for their work in addressing economic challenges.

The College Program for Incarcerated Women awarded a $50,000 grant from ASU Women & Philanthropy.

The Public Allies program trained and placed 19 allies in Arizona nonprofit organizations.

AmeriCorps Seniors offered 20 volunteer tutors through a partnership with Future for Kids and 40 transportation for seniors service volunteers through Northwest Valley Connect.

Launch of the updated Scope of the Nonprofit Sector interactive data platform on the Lodestar website.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)

In addition to the extensive course catalog available to lifelong learners aged 50 plus, OLLI is engaging with community in the following ways:

Development of a Longitudinal Cohort Study of Arizona State University Osher Lifelong Learning Participants.

Institute for Social Science Research, $7,315 (Seed Grant Funding)

Obtained $5,000 for the Rick Knopf Scholarship from Rio Verde Foundation and HOA

OLLI collaboration event with Alzheimer's Association - DSW Chapter (I sit on the board as well)

Strategic volunteer engagement with AARP Foundation Experience Corps

Participated in Grandmother Collective first annual summit and in collaboration with collaborative research

SCRD is the lead unit on 15 active research projects, with involvement in 7 additional projects in which SCRD faculty are involved but the PI sits outside of the school.

5 projects are connected to the Center for Sustainable Tourism and 6 are connected to the Lodestar Center.

21 proposals submitted July 2023-June 2024 by Tenure-track faculty. 6 awarded, 13 pending sponsor acceptance, 1 agreement under review as of June 2024.

4.6% of undergraduate SCRD students participated in research supervised by SCRD faculty. 7 faculty supervised student research.

HAITC partnership sees addition of Masters in Tourism Management alongside undergraduate degree offerings.

Articulating the value proposition of humans in an increasingly AI dominated world, specifically focusing on the humanistic skills our students need to have and develop to be competitive in the industry/world.

Organize 1-2 continued education workshopts for SCRD alumni and/or industry partners on a relevant interdisciplinary topic.

Organize an internal/external and interdisciplinary research symposium that celebrates our efforts and research legacy with industry partners.

2023-24 was a year of reflection with APR, allowing all faculty and staff to identify the school’s strengths and areas of potential future growth. As we look to the future, we remain committed to our mission to promote community wellbeing, both within our school and the wider community. We are confident that our strategic initiatives for 2024 will push the school’s reputation forward and further strengthen our position in community development.
