A Message from the Director

On behalf of Little Rock Parks & Recreation and the City of Little Rock, it is my privilege to welcome all athletes, friends, and families to our city for the 22nd running of the Little Rock Marathon. I am excited to join you at the starting line of a race that serves as one of the premier events held in Little Rock annually – and one of the many reasons why the City of Little Rock is such a fun place to visit and live.

As always, we applaud the character, courage, and ability that each athlete brings to the race from start to finish over our scenic 26.2 mile course that sets a standard for competitive athletes everywhere. Our citizens, race day spectators, sponsors, and hundreds of volunteers welcome you with open arms.

Funds raised from this race will continue to support Little Rock Parks & Recreation, which consists of more than sixty parks, seven community centers, the Jim Dailey Fitness and Aquatic Center, the Rebsamen Tennis Center, municipal golf courses, and miles of trails.

In addition, Little Rock Parks & Recreation offers a wide range of youth and adult recreational and sports leagues, after-school and summer playground programs for children ages 6-15, outdoor recreation, therapeutic recreation, and programs for senior adults.

Thank you for participating in the Little Rock Marathon and helping to support Little Rock Parks & Recreation with your efforts. Keep training hard, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

RACE DAY ROAD CLOSURE INFORMATION

● The clear plastic bag given to you at Packet Pick Up will be the only bag accepted at Gear Check. No other bags will be accepted.

● All bags are subject to random bag checks by security personnel. We recommend arriving early on Race Day to account for the additional time it will take to pass through security.

● Be what experts call a "force multiplier" and watch for suspicious people or packages – and not just on Race Day. For example, if you're on the Little Rock Marathon’s social media sites and someone makes a threat, report it to the police or race officials by calling 501-537-2602.

● Skip the headphones; they dampen awareness of your surroundings. Wear a medical ID bracelet or fill out the medical info on the back of your bib. If you're injured, the information can greatly assist firstresponders in your treatment.

Closures will begin at 4:30 am both Saturday and Sunday along the entire course prior to the race start. Races begin on Saturday at 7:00 am. Races begin on Sunday at 5:00 am. Streets will reopen on a rolling basis and at the discretion of LRPD. Approximate closure times are shown below. For the safety of the many pedestrians in the area on Race mornings, Markham Street in front of the Statehouse Convention Center and the Marriott Hotel will close at 3:00 am on Saturday and Sunday and will not open until 1:00 pm to vehicular traffic. All drivers are encouraged to adjust travel time and plan alternate routes within and around the racecourse.

THERE IS NO GEAR CHECK ON SATURDAY!

Before you go to your assigned start corral, you may want to drop off a bag at Gear Check located inside the Statehouse Convention Center Hall I & II ( same location you picked up your Race Packet). Each participant will receive a clear plastic bag when they pick up their Race Packet. This bag will also serve as the gear bag for items you might want immediately following the race. Only the clear bags given at Packet Pick Up will be accepted. No other bags will be accepted. Please write your race number legibly on the outside of the bag with a durable marker. You can reclaim your bag after the race.

● Gear Check hours 4:00 am – 1:30 pm

● The Little Rock Marathon is NOT responsible for any lost or stolen items.

A lost and found area will be located at the Volunteer Check In/Info Booth, which is in the Osage Room in the Statehouse Convention Center (see Runner Services Map ). Any items found in the Start and Finish areas will be sent to this location. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity.

PACKET PICK-UP PLUS

If you purchased PPP, please go to this area of Packet Pick Up to get your items. You do not have to stand in the specific race pick up line. We have your packet waiting for you. Less time in line, more time to shop, visit Little Rock, or get that last shake out run in.

TIMING

All 2025 Little Rock Marathon races will be timed using a disposable timing chip, which is attached to each participant’s race number. The disposable chip requires no battery, is lighter than a feather and has a built-in microprocessor customized to ensure maximum reads even during the most challenging of conditions.

● Unofficial times will be sent to the email address and phone number given at registration.

● Unofficial times will also be posted on the website.

● No chip/race number. No time. No exceptions.

START CORRALS

ARRIVE EARLY! Head to the start line at least 45 minutes before the official start time. Once in your assigned corral, seed yourself with the pace sign of your expected pace per mile.

The intent of the corral start is to ensure a positive race experience and provide all participants the same opportunity for a quick, smooth and safe start with sufficient room to run/walk along the racecourse. A participant’s official time does not begin until he or she crosses the start line. The timing system provides each participant with an accurate time from the start line to finish line.

RACE DAY CANCELLATION, COURSE ALTERATION AND WEATHER POLICY

It is the primary goal of the Little Rock Marathon to provide and ensure a safe event for participants, volunteers and community attendees alike. We will be diligent in not exposing the participants, volunteers or the community-at-large to any undue risk in the production and or execution of the event. We understand the commitment the participants have made in entering the race; however, the decisions regarding race cancellations and/or alterations will be based on the larger community safety as well as the participants. Moreover, if community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress.

Regarding weather specifically, the Little Rock Marathon has adopted the WBGT ( Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature ) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for participation in endurance events, could result in cancellation of the event. WBGT is considered “the most practical heat stress index characterizing the effect of a heat stress environment on the individual.”

When weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants, the Little Rock Marathon maintains the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause alteration of the race and/or the racecourse or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions fall under an “Act of God” and will not result in refunding of any race entry fee or future race credits. The Little Rock Marathon officials, along with officials from the City of Little Rock, will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race. In the case of a course evacuation, Little Rock Marathon officials and local law enforcement officials will communicate throughout the racecourse to direct participants to safe shelters to await transportation back to the start and/or finish area.

The Little Rock Marathon will use an on-course emergency alert sign system. The flag colors will change with a change in the heat/cold stress level. The staff at the aid stations will know the meaning of each color.

Extreme conditions that are high risk already place a burden on community health care systems, including emergency medical transportation, as well as hospital room capacity. Little Rock Marathon officials will not knowingly place the community in any such position that will place a burden on overall community safety.

Each participant assumes responsibility when entering an event with the potential risks that a marathon presents. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the marathon. Furthermore, all participants are strongly advised to cooperate with directives given by Little Rock Marathon officials and to assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, especially when conditions are less than ideal.

EVENT ALERT SYSTEM

A color-coded alert system will communicate the status of course conditions to participants leading up to and on Race Day. Color coded signs will be placed at each aid station on the course. The levels range from low to extreme based on several factors, including weather conditions.

All participants are advised to familiarize themselves with the event alert system prior to Race Day. Please remain alert for directions from race officials/course volunteers and take precautions to properly prepare for a variety of weather conditions on race day.

Unsportsmanlike conduct is unacceptable and will not be permitted during any Little Rock Marathon event. “Unsportsmanlike conduct” shall include, but is not limited to, failure to heed the instructions of race officials; intentional disregard of the rules, or abusive language and/or actions toward any race official, volunteer, participant, or spectator. Individuals behaving unsportsmanlike may be disqualified ( at the discretion of race officials), have their registration terminated, and be prohibited from participating in future Little Rock Marathon events.

RULES & REGULATIONS

The Little Rock Marathon and Half Marathon courses are certified by the United States of America Track & Field (USATF) Association. Only registered participants are eligible to participate in the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5k. Unregistered individuals will be removed from the course. Unauthorized bicycles are not allowed on the course. To prevent a physical or psychological advantage to any registered participant, unregistered individuals and cyclists will be considered illegal pacers and are strictly prohibited. Little Rock course marshals will serve as race officials. Sections of miles 19-23 of the course are out-and-back. On those sections of the course, athletes must remain on their side of the course, which will be separated by traffic medians and cones. Participants may be penalized or disqualified for:

● Leaving the course

● Joining the race after the start

● Receiving pacing assistance from an unregistered individual or cyclist

● Not completing the event in which you registered

● Unsportsmanlike conduct

● Not following the race rules

FIRST TIMERS - RACE ETIQUETTE

Almost 30% of our participants say the Little Rock Marathon and Half Marathon are their “first” race. If our race is your first race, thank you in advance for selecting the Little Rock Marathon. Here are a few “tips” that may help you enjoy your journey.

● Wear your race bib on the front of your shirt. This is not a rodeo, and you are going to want your photos.

● Please pay attention to pre-race instructions – both print and verbal. What you read and hear will not only help guide you through the course but will keep you safe.

● Each participant has been assigned to a start corral. This will ensure that you are with people who have a similar pace. Your corral assignment is in the top corner of your official race number.

● Please be aware of others around you. It’s tempting, but please do not run/walk more than two abreast.

● Please stay to the right side of the road, as well as any cones or barricades. Sections of the course are out and back ( i.e. mile 2-7, and miles 19-23).

● You may have to deal with bodily functions. Need to spit, clear your nose or vomit? Please move to the side of the road.

● If you need to tie your shoe or stop for any reason, please move to the side of the road. People coming up behind you are still moving and if you stop in front of them, the scene is set for a collision.

● If you want to start with a friend and they are in a different corral, the faster of the two can move back to the slower corral. The slower participant may not move up to the faster corral.

● When stopping at an aid station, move all the way over to the table, grab water or Gatorade, and move away from the table so others may get water or Gatorade too. If you want to stop and drink, move to the side of the road, out of the way

of other athletes. If there’s a trash receptacle, use it. If not, don’t go too far with your cup. Volunteers will be collecting the cups and will appreciate not having to go on an extended “litter patrol.”

● Move to the side if you hear “Excuse me,” “Coming through,” “On your left,” or “On your right.” You are about to be passed and the person behind you is giving you a heads up. Proper race etiquette says let that person through. They are having a good day.

● Feel free to shout words of encouragement to other runners. You will hear words of encouragement in return.

● When you are approaching the Finish Line, you may see loved ones cheering you on. Please do not encourage anyone to join you in the finish line stretch. Your support team is very important, but please communicate that the racecourse and finish area is for registered participants and staff only.

● After you cross the Finish Line, it is important that you continue moving forward –at least at a slow walk– so that the finish area does not become bottlenecked with exhausted runners standing around and trying to catch their breath. This situation can become dangerous as other athletes approach the Finish Line at high speeds like bowling balls taking aim at so many vulnerable bowling pins!

● Enjoy the post-race refreshments but remember that others will want to enjoy the goodies too. Please be courteous to those finishing behind you and take only one of each item. You earned it.

● Celebrate! Thank your volunteers and have a great race!

What To Do If You Experience an Injury During the Little Rock Marathon

It's race day. You've been training for months and preparing for everything within your control. An injury during your marathon is the last thing you want.

If you experience pain or get hurt during a marathon, the most important thing is to stop running and assess the severity of your injury. For minor injuries, you can try to manage the pain with walking, stretching, or icing the area. You may consider withdrawing from the race if necessary. If the pain is significant, seek medical attention from race medics or a nearby medical station.

UAMS Health will be providing the medical services for the Little Rock Marathon. There will be three medical stations positioned throughout the course, with a hospital set-up in the runner services area at the finish line. There will be a number of mobile units moving throughout the course on bikes, carts and ATVs. These units will be staffed by paramedics, EMTs and marathon staff. There will also be ambulances stationed at the finish line and throughout the course.

So, here are the key steps to take if you are injured during the marathon:

Stop running. This is the most important step. Continuing to run on an injured area can worsen the damage. Assess the pain to determine the severity of your injury and where the pain is located.

Seek medical attention if needed. If the pain is severe, you experience significant swelling, or you suspect a serious injury like a fracture, find a race medic or medical station immediately.

For minor aches, pains, or cramping, don’t be afraid to slow down or stop and stretch to ease the discomfort and see if you can continue at a reduced pace. Apply ice to any injured areas to reduce inflammation.

Consider withdrawing from the race if the pain is too much to manage and could potentially worsen. It’s often best to drop out of the marathon and prioritize your health.

Experiencing persistent pain or injury?

Call the orthopaedics and sports medicine experts at UAMS Health so you can get back to doing the things you love.
