Oil & gas refinery Background • Client relief system documentation was not always updated to reflect changes to operating streams and conditions. • As a result, requirement for the relief systems needed to be revalidated, to ensure they would be able to handle any potential catastrophic overpressure events. • Relief valves are the last lines of defence, in any facility’s safety system, against overpressure events.
LR Solution • Design philosophy outlining relief study methodologies, robust work procedures, gap identification and risk assessment. • Implemented continuous improvement reviews to achieve consistency of relief studies across all process units and rigorous 100% internal QA/QC procedures.
Result • Saved the client from significant cost and profitability implications, avoiding the alternative of taking the platform off station to dry dock for repairs.
Result • Our specialist process engineers improved the safety of the facility, ensuring compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) audits, through revalidation of 2,500 relief valves, spread across 30 process and utility units. • Minimal disruption to normal plant operations.

Floating production installation
Result • RBI Inspection plan created that resulted in cost savings while assuring integrity − RBI Plan: Inspection locations: 1,500 Covering internal, damage mechanisms and Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) − Traditional Plan: TML’s: 16,000 Covering internal corrosion only • Initial cost savings: over $500,000. • Ongoing cost savings (15 years): over $500,000.
Background • Structural defect inside the hull cross brace of their floating production installation, which had propagated over 70% through wall of a horizontal brace section that sits subsea between ballast columns. • Due to the severity and location of the defect, external repair work was required as soon as possible. • Failure of the brace could have been catastrophic for structural integrity – may have resulted in loss of the facility and potentially significant loss of life.
