Editor’s Note One can say that in order to keep moving forward, he must learn to let go of everything that’s holding him back and accept the changes around him. It is because CHANGE, as we all know, is the most inevitable thing in life. This year, the world has faced major events, particularly in our country when a strong-willed man was elected to the highest position in land. His unusual ways of running the country is a coin with two sides, placing the Philippines on a rollercoaster ride. Our university has also been through many transformations to cope up with today’s generation. These changes keep our boats sailing along the harsh and speedy pace of this world. As another academic year comes to an end, change becomes a constant reminder that one will always have the chance to move past the obstacles. Likewise, the LPU Independent Sentinel releases the OMEGA – a year-end magazine to compile every Lycean’s stories and sentiments of happiness, success, and also failures. In this issue, we bring you different accounts of changes in life. Our university is undergoing innovation and taking excellence to the next level; so do we in our own different journey. Like the astronauts and scientists, we exert strenuous efforts to look for something that would benefit us in the future. As everything alters in a blink of an eye, we must learn how to embrace the change in order to grow and become a strong person. The pages of this magazine can serve as a reminder for you, and for everyone, of the challenges you conquered and the failures you overcame. Your story can be someone else’s inspiration. Always remember that you are not alone.

ROAD TO EXCELLENCE: LPU’s Three Star Rating

WORDS Phoebe Cates B. Eguico

“Slowly, we are already achieving our dream of becoming [an] internationally accredited university. ” – Dr. Conrado Iñigo Jr.

L

iving its new vision of becoming an internationally accredited university, Lyceum of the Philippines University – Manila received Three Stars from the Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS™) world university excellence rating in 2016. The stars is awarded to universities depending on its performance on the field of research, employability, internationalization, facilities, quality teaching, innovation, culture, accreditation and social responsibility such as community extension programs. As stated on their website, the QS™ Stars system evaluates universities against a range of important performance indicators based on a ratings method. It awards stars to an institution according to the range of criteria and can include universities not traditionally well-placed in rankings. It is an opportunity for these uni-

5 | OMEGA

versities to highlight their strengths via awarded recognition. The rating is based on the evaluation of institution’s performance individually and measured it against the pre-set criteria. IT IS NOT CERTAIN TO WIN BUT TO TRY “It is the principle of it is not certain that we shall win but it [is] certain that we shall try,” LPU Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Conrado Iñigo Jr. said in an interview. “Lesson yan na better try and learn from experience to achieve it,” Dr. Iñigo added. According to the roadmap set by LPU, the primary goal was only to receive a One Star rating by 2019. However, just like a student striving hard for a higher grade, Three Stars was achieved three years earlier than

expected. “Mas mahirap ito [QS™ Stars recognition] because we submitted documents and they investigated on our practices based on a certain criterion. Hindi ito perception. Eventually, we are introducing LPU to the world,” Dr. Iñigo shared. Universities with QS™ Three Stars rating are nationally well-recognized and are beginning to attract international recognition. The rating system also provides deeper insights of individual institution which will help the students and parents in choosing a university. In the Philippines, there are only two universities rated by the system – Lyceum of the Philippines University and University of Santo Thomas.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION The attainment of Three Stars, which was a result of the collective effort from the administration and the stakeholders, somehow assures the achievement of LPU’s 2023 vision – “to be an internationally accredited university dedicated to innovation and excellence in service to God and country.” Dr. Iñigo is positive that LPU will be on QS World University Ranking during the university’s 70th founding year in 2023. “In that case, we can be the best,” he said.

With the accomplishments we have now, he confidently added that “before 2023 [roadmap], we can really reach our journey.” Sooner or later, we would see ourselves competing with the top universities, not just within the country but worldwide. The Quacquarelli Symonds or QS™ is a British company specialized in higher education and career information and solutions. It releases an annual QS World University Ranking list of top 600 universities worldwide ranked through close consultation with an international board

of leading academics and the perspective of the students, university professionals and the government around the world. The university’s achievements will eventually become beneficial to the student body. The LPU administration has been aiding in giving a better future to all stakeholders by providing quality education and worldwide recognition. Now, it is within students’ actions and determination to make the university’s vision come true.

THE SELECTIVE RETENTION POLICY:

For Excellence or pressure? WORDS Carla Shane N. Atim ILLUSTRATION Hygeian R. Español

S

tarting first semester of academic year 2017-2018, LPU will implement the Selective Retention Policy to promote positive study habits in order to drive students towards excellent academic performances. In line with the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework, the new policy aims to hone the students to become more efficient and capable graduates in the future by monitoring the academic performance. OBE AND FORMER POLICIES Yet, retention policy is not new to LPU. The university has already passed several policies that would require students’ positive study habits years back. Aside from the new grading system, the university administered a new strategy which sets the students to work harder last academic year 2014-2015. The students who fail to maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 will be on probationary status on the first offense, 3-6

7|OMEGA

units’ deduction in the prescribed curriculum on the second and third offenses, and dismissal on the final. This went hand-in-hand with the OBE framework, an educational system centered on results – in the observable and measurable things a student should produce after acquiring skills. It was implemented in academic year 2011-2012. “You’re studying because you want to work, and if you want to work, master the requirements of the employers and that’s outcomesbased,” explained Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Conrado E. Iñigo Jr. in the LPU Independent Sentinel newsletter September 2014 to January 2015 issue. OVERALL IMPLEMENTATION Aside from the different retention policies on the other degree programs, the colleges also started to apply that strategy. Last year, the College of Arts and Sciences adapted the said plan.

However, the retention policy will not be college or program-based now as LPU will implement an overall selective retention strategy that would leave no Lycean as an exception. According to Dr. Iñigo, the university will impose a strict compliance to all students to prevent getting failing grades (5.00) on all of their subjects with no GPA specification. This will be done through the strict monitoring of the students’ academic performances by their professors. Moreover, the policy will implement an offense-to-consequence basis. Like the former policy, every time the students fail to pass the cut, they will receive consequences. The 1st offense will be a verbal or written warning and for the 2nd and 3rd offenses, 3-6 units will be deducted from the total academic unit loads. For the 4th and final offense, the student will no longer be able to stay at the university and will have to transfer to another school.

1

POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE? With the imposition of the retention, the students would be pushed to do their best in every thing and get what they really deserve. Yet, like the former policies, this new plan might be considered as another problem for the Lyceans as more pressure is being given to them. Professors were also taking sides on the new policy. When asked if the retention policy leads to pressuring the students, Ms. Renalyn Valdez said that it can make them improve and develop themselves. “Don’t you think pressure is a good thing? So long as pressure leads you to improvement or to developing yourselves, that’s a good thing. It becomes negative when pressure leads to a destructive behavior. The school will address that through counselling and other relevant student services. But pressure is not a bad thing, we all have to deal

2

with pressure and that’s the training you will get in college – to deal with pressure – because in real life, there is pressure everyday. If you have difficulty dealing with it, what are we here for?” said Ms. Valdez as she’s in favor for the retention policy. However, Mr. Jimmy Oblena says otherwise. According to him, grades should not be a basis on how educated a person is but rather skill, and the selective retention policy will only hinder the students to learn more. “Mape-pressure yun, matinding pressure para sa bata kasi magkakaroon ng fear, at pag meron ng ganun hindi na relax ang bata. Kasi sa klase, dapat binibigyan mo ng relaxation ang bata para mas makapagconcentrate (…) kahit anong bagay naman gagawin mo pag na-pressure and wala ka sa mood e’, hindi [nga lang] talaga magiging successful,” he further explained.

3

Yet, said that Dr. Iñigo, the policy is not made to pressure the students but to motivate them to study hard and it sets its goal on changing the attitude of the students from having a negative study habits into positive one. “I believe that all the students are intelligent so there’s no such thing called [stupid]. [Stupid] for students who don’t know how to study, that’s why they get a grade of 5; not because they are not good, the reason is that they don’t have a positive study habit”, Dr. Inigo explained. It is the way of the institution to engage the students in a good study environment, to have a positive outlook for their future and to prepare them to become a more competent individuals – a graduates that will be a globally competitive professionals in the years to come.

THE ‘NO PERMIT, NO EXAM’ POLICY AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN WORDS Phoebe Cates B. Eguico and Tresha R. Finianos ILLUSTRATION Hygeian R. Español

I

n the Philippines, the ‘no permit, no exam’ scheme is a widespread policy which requires students to pay their fees before they’re allowed to take their exams. But is really a need for universities and colleges to do that? Doesn’t that hinder the student’s ability to receive quality education? CHED MEMORANDUM Back in 2010, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) released a memorandum no. 2 which appeals to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for flexibility in the implementation of the ‘No Permit, No Exam’ policy or any such that prohibits students to take examinations due to unpaid tuition fee. Under the order, it is stated that “higher education institutions shall allow students with delinquent accounts to take school examinations,” provided that there would be a promissory note stat-

9 | OMEGA

ing that their financial obligation be settled. That being said, the university is allowed to withhold student documents if they fail to pay their balance on the date written. In an article by GMA News online on January 26, 2010, CHED Director IV Julito Vitriolo told Cesar Apolinario in an interview that it would be a waste if a student drops out because he flunked the semester due to tuition payment issues. This memo will be a big aid for the families of students with financial constraints as it assures the accessibility and cost-effective quality of the institutions. However, the memorandum earned a thumbs down from the Federation of Associations of Private Schools and Administrators (FAPSA), saying a school cannot be operated by promissory notes. In 2013, the CHED issued a new policy requiring HEIs to

provide students the access to financial aids, especially those who belong to the marginalized sectors of the country. By then, the ‘No Permit, No Exam’ policy was scrapped. 1,800 universities were asked to offer students scholarship and financial assistance including food services, health care and student housing. On the contrary, Senator Cynthia Villar passed Senate Bill No. 722 or the “Anti-No Permit, No Exam Act of 2016” in July 2016 which aims to prohibit educational institutions from halting their unpaid students in taking their examination and its states that it will be unlawful if the students will be compelled to pay down payment or for the first installment more than 30% of their tuition fee. The bill proposes that those educators found guilty will pay a fine, ranging from P100,000 to P200,000.

LPU ON ‘NO PERMIT, NO EXAM’ POLICY LPU stopped issuing permits during the first semester of academic year 2015-2016 to try a new technique that could ease the student’s burden. There were no permits issued to the students because it will automatically appear in the fixed online system. The professors will be able to access a LIST OF STUDENTS WITH ACCOUNT BALANCE from the Academic Information Management System (AIMS). The Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) Dr. Conrado Iñigo explained that they discontinued printing permits but that

doesn’t mean that the ‘no permit, no exam’ policy stopped in the university. It was by the end of the second semester of the academic year 2015-2016 that they returned the issuance of permit due to the difficulties of the new technique. The students were advised to claim their permits on their respective colleges before their scheduled examinations. The re-issuance of permits had caused shock and confusion to the student body. Noticeably, more professors had become strict in giving examinations to students who are not able to present their permits after it was re-imposed.

They were given time to settle their balance or show promissory notes. Else, the grades of the students will not be recorded. Most critics suggest that the policy hinders the right to education and the potential of the students to excel in their fields. Albeit, universities should focus on improving the quality of education and catering to the needs of its stakeholders. Will the said policy hinder the students’ academic performance or is it needed to ensure the proper functioning of the university?

STATE OF THE ART:

LPU’s newest building to rise by 2019

WORDS John Poliquit

T

here are times when you come inside the school and walk within its crowded corridors or come across the library that sometimes runs out of chairs for you to have a good study time. But what if, in years’ time, your school opens its doors for a wider space for Lyceans to enjoy? With two-floor library, an atrium, roof deck and a multi-purpose hall, these new features are the new facilities adding up to the planned construction of the State of the Art building, which is set to be completed by January 2019. “We really want to create an environment for them to learn, to enjoy learning,” Building and Grounds Department head Dr. Samuel Chua, “We want to continue [becoming] a leading university so we will show [not] only curriculum wise and faculty wise. We’re going to show facility wise. It’s going to really improve.” he added. WHAT’S INSIDE? The structure is planned to be a four-story building, next to the school gymnasium. The first floor is designed as a multi-purpose hall to accommodate more activities for students and orga-

11 | O M E G A

nizations. Beside it, there will also be a coffee shop for people to unwind during their free time. “If you want to have an event... you can [have it] in the ground floor,” Dr. Chua said. The second and third floors would become the future library and academic resource center of the campus. It is complete with an atrium, an open-roofed entrance hall, modern tables and chairs and private quarters for meetings. In the concept design, the maximized open spaces dwarf the current size of the library in the third floor. By the looks of it, the library can be a breath of fresh air for students to sit down, study and even relax. The fourth floor would give additional classrooms and lounges for graduate students, while a roof deck is allotted for activities by the athletics department. Moreover, Dr. Chua plans to eliminate the woes of parking by building a basement below the structure. “Obviously parking is a big problem in LPU.” he said. “That’s why we decided to construct a basement so that we can increase the capacity of parking.”

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES According to Dr. Chua, “It is not that easy to build a promising campus environment in a place like Intramuros”. With looming congestion and lack of available lots, it is hard for the campus to expand with these obstacles along the way. “Number one, space is [cramped] here in Intramuros because there’s no more property available.” he said. “If there is available, there’s a height limit.” Hopefully, the plan is set to be constructed on an available campus area beside the gymnasium, which is currently a parking lot and a former building for the College of Engineering. Despite this, the architecture surrounding the facilities in the new building is designed to open up more space – something desperately needed in an Intramurosbased campus. “They can’t just sit around without space for learning.” Dr. Chua said. “That’s the ad-

dition of the whole building.” COMING SOON Most of us may graduate before the building is ready for students by 2019, but hopefully being a former Lycean with perks like an alumni ID can let you enter and discover the new addition of LPU that’s soon to rise. The facade of the building is still under deliberation, but Dr. Chua wishes to embrace the Spanish historical vibe as well as keeping up with modernized advancement. “It does retrofit the same modern [style]. It will align to the new technology,” he said. The new state of the art building that will soon rise in Intramuros shows just how much effort a school must do to accommodate a satisfying campus experience, despite the university standing in a tight space. Still, the building solidifies its purpose to give better space for Lyceans, with facilities that everyone will be able to enjoy.

THE LYCEAN BUCKET LIST:

THINGS TO DO BEFORE LEAVING LPU

WORDS Carla Shane N. Atim ILLUSTRATIONS Hygeian R. Español There are lots of things you would regret not trying out if you’ll remain a typical home-school-home student in your whole college days. You’ll be missing out a lot. Here are some things you might want to do before you grab your diploma and leave LPU. Here’s the different college experiences a Lycean shouldn’t miss – straight from old timer Pirates.

1. HAVE AN INSPIRATION, FALL IN LOVE Every now and then, we need to look for things that could motivate us. For most of us, the easiest way is to get an inspiration: have a crush on someone or just simply fall in love. “It was my second semester in LPU since I transferred. Being an irregular student scared me on the previous sem. I didn’t have that much idea on how I would survive college independently. But then I told my pessimistic self that if I do not live with it, I might be the female counterpart of Juan Tamad – who expects nothing but a “bayabas” to fall from the tree. I did things successfully on my own and I’m very proud of it. Sorry for getting a little boastful here, who wouldn’t? With this, I met someone who was also running on the same track with me. When we got to know more of each other from the class meetings, I never really thought we’d go far beyond our friendship. For me, saying that I could stand on the ground with my own feet is already an achievement. I’m also happy that I met my Superman who made me feel loved and thought me some of the best life lessons.” - Andrea M. Ragot, Irregular, AB Journalism

13 | O M E G A

2. FOOD TRIPPIN’ There are all kinds of food waiting once you go outside your ‘foodie’ comfort zone. It’s palatable and surely a must-try!

“Have you always bring packed lunch every time you go to school? Why don’t you try eating from the vendors outside the vicinity, it’s both tasty and affordable! There are variety of foods outside including the all-time Kikiam, Fishball, Chickenball (KFC) near LPU Gate 2 and the Cantonan baside Gate 1. Aside from those two, there’s also the new P25 Burger-fries combo at the back of the campus. If you just want to fill your stomach with a simple snack, there’s candy corner where you can satisfy your sweet tooth. There’s also taho, Indian mangoes, Inihaw (with the famous betamax), and calamares – all fit our tiny budget. You can also try eating along the karinderya’s in the walls. Take note, don’t miss the stress-relieving spicy chicken! And better wait for the shawarma convention every foundation day.” - Jillian Dancel, 3rd year, AB Journalism

“ ”

3. GHOST HUNTING Who hasn’t heard about the infamous Uyayi of the fifth floor or the creepy ‘katok’ on the third? How about the White lady of the LPU Tower? Better be careful when the sun goes down.

“One Pirate Lycean should never, ever miss is staying up all night at the 4th floor of the university where ghosts and other spirits supposedly haunt the halls during the wee hours of the evening. They should stay until dark and do tests of courage with friends especially when some of the lights upstairs flicker every now and then and some just don’t work at all. They should feel a chill down their spine after their late-night rehearsals, last-minute cramming, and other (mis)adventures every Lycean would have to go through. Another is, if they get the chance, to sneak up LPU Tower. Best chance they could [have] is if officers an organizations and get to stash up equipment on the upper floors right above the JPL Hall of Freedom. My mom who graduated in ‘89 told me that a White Lady lurks around the corner who was once a student who either fell down the tower or hanged herself. Lore isn’t consistent but accounts of horror are.” - Moses Isaiah B. Palces, Alumni, AB Foreign Service major in Diplomacy

4. PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Our university offers time for students to relax and unwind or showcase your talent.

“You could tell me a 100 better experiences you’ve had in your time in LPU, but let me tell you mine. I was a sophomore then when we had to participate with the annual cultural dance festival during our college week. It was unforgettable for me as during the highs of rehearsal I was stricken with dengue. I thought I couldn’t recover in time to participate, but miraculously I pulled through and event better, we actually won 2nd place. Since tourism students are required to participate here, I would 100% recommend it to other students from different colleges to watch. Not only it is entertaining but you could also learn a lot from it.” - Chelsea Pasay, 4th year, BS International Tourism and Travel Management

O M E G A | 14

5. UPLIFTING THE LYCEAN SPIRIT Have you been in an NCAA game? If you haven’t then go now! Your cheers and screams helps our fellow Pirates to strive harder and go climb the ladder. Who knows maybe one day we’ll bring home the bacon? “Whether it is required by your PE teacher, to cheer your friend, or simply to see your campus crush in the court, one can’t call himself a true Lycean if he hasn’t attended a Pirates game in the NCAA in his entire campus life. Usually, Pirates get excited to watch basketball games, and the cheer dance competition, but if you’re not a fan of those competitions, then you can watch their other sporting teams such as Badminton, Chess, Volleyball, Football, Tennis, Table Tennis, Swimming, Track and Field, and Taekwondo. All of which have brought excellence in their own way. The best part of attending NCAA games is that, even though you don’t know the players well, and you are not that familiar with the rules, you still get that feeling in your heart that you have to scream and cheer for your team once they score a point (Or boo if the opponent gets a point), and that my fellow Lycean is what we call “School Spirit” and no Lycean should miss that.” - Francis Felix Falgui, 3rd year, AB Journalism

6. FOREIGN CULTURE INTERACTION Seeing foreign students in LPU is not a new thing for us Lyceans, but being able to help and tutor them during their stay in the country is quite fulfilling. “Being a professional student-teacher in the International Affairs Office is one of the best things I encountered in my college life. More than the joy of receiving honorarium, I enjoyed the company of my fellow tutors as well as my foreign students. This experience made me find balance in my studies and share my passion for teaching. When we got stranded in Puerto Galera (crosscultural activity) for six days due to bad weather, we had so much fun during the amazing race, team games, pageant, unli-Korean food, movie marathons, confession game – but most of all we got to know each other in a deeper level and got to build stronger relations with each other. Apart from all these things, the best part of being a tutor is teaching students and seeing them learn because of my help. I could say that it’s satisfying and very fulfilling in my quest of sharing my knowledge. It has also made me experience their culture as well as learn their language. In my case, I was able to handle Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, and Japanese, in my one-year stay in the IAO. If given the chance, I would love to teach again. -Chester Jan Singian, 3rd year, ABMC major in Broadcasting

“ ”

7. BE A PART OF AN ORGANIZATION Always remember that learnings are not just boxed in the four corners of the classroom. Go out and try new things and engage yourself with your fellow Lyceans.

“My most unforgettable experience in LPU was being part of an organization that helped me enhance my skills, develop my strengths and conquer my weaknesses. It started when I was in my sophomore year; I was recruited to be part of LPU Management Society as part of a committee. The following school year, I was offered the Presidency of the organization, a responsibility which I accepted. It was the “game-changer” of my college life. From being a typical “school-bahay” student, I became involved in a lot of extra-curricular activities that opened many doors for opportunities like being LPU’s representative to a national competition (Agora Youth Awards- Marketing Student of the Year), being part of national organizations (ENACTUS Philippines, Young Entrepreneurs Society Philippines, Philippine Junior Marketing Association), and spearhead many projects that made an impact not only on my co-students but also on certain communities through outreach programs.” - Christine Joy Lavarez, Alumni, BSBA major in Marketing Management

8. MAKE LPU PROUD And at times, trying out new things lead to new doors that offer great opportunities.

“For me, being in an organization takes “two to tango”, meaning we must take part in the vision, mission and objective of an organization for both parties to develop. It’s not just about gaining certificates or having new circle of friends. It’s all about what we can do for our chosen affiliation. As a Lycean, I urge my fellow Lyceans to take part and explore extra-curricular activities. Because we may not know what we are missing if we wouldn’t try [it]. I myself was a product of an organization and I am proud to say that I was able to step out of my comfort zone – represent LPU in a national competition, lead our organization to the top for two consecutive years and take part in bringing home the first every Sinag ng Maynila Award for the most outstanding youth organization in Manila. Lyceans, don’t miss the chance to be part of an organization, it’s one step investment and I am sure everything will be worth it.” – Marc Christian G. Chua Sy, Alumni, BS IHM major in CAKO

These are some of the things that’ll make your stay in LPU worthwhile. It’s tiring to just study, you know. Sometimes, you need distraction to find your focus again so better try it yourself. O M E G A | 16

SATISFYING THE GLIMPSE OF THE INDUSTRY: Tips for a successful internship WORDS Jessica Jane I. Sy ILLUSTRATION Jonan B. Paule

A

s one step-away from our goals, college life is not only boxed in a classroom. We’ll come to a point wherein we’ll take our on-the-job training (OJT) in the industry and try to apply all the skills we learned in school and acquire all the things which would make us better professionals. To make most of your OJT experience enjoyable and fulfilling, here are some tips you need to remember before, during, and after your internship:

MAKE YOURSELF KNOWLEDGEABLE ON LPU CENTER FOR CAREER SERVICES AND INDUSTRY RELATIONS (CCSIR). It is the assigned department in LPU for the OJT of all the students. CCSIR holds Practicum Orientation every semester wherein they explain all the process and requirements for the internship. Make sure you attend the orientation because they give certificates as attendance and it is one of the requirements needed after you finish your training.

ACE THE INTERVIEW. First of all, arrive at least ten minutes before the scheduled time of your interview day. Also, wear the proper attire. These are just plus points for the interview but it reflects your work characteristics. On the interview itself, don’t think of impressing the employer, just be honest and present yourself in the best way you can. Be optimistic and have a positive attitude. Light up the room as you walk in because you want them to acknowledge you.

SECURE YOUR GOLD SLIP. Gold slip is the starting requirement in practicum. You can acquire it after the Practicum Orientation. Pass your resume at the CCSIR office to have a walked-in interview with CCSIR Director Mr. Roberto Zozobrado. They conduct the interview every Wednesday to Friday at 8 o’clock AM. Be in your formal attire on that day and prepare as if you’re really applying for a job.

MAXIMIZE EVERYTHING. During your internship, apply the skills you have and try to learn new things as much as possible.

CHOOSE WISELY. There’s a list of companies provided by the CCSIR which you can choose from to apply for your OJT. Always take in consideration on how the company would help you improve your skills. You don’t want to spend your practicum on making coffee and photocopying papers, do you? 17 | O M E G A

MAKE FRIENDS. Your OJT is not only intended for you to hone your skills but also to develop your interpersonal skills. Always remember that you can learn not only from the bosses or professionals but also from your colleagues. Like love, it is a two-way relationship. BE PERSISTENT. Not only being persistent in your contact with the people at your internship but also with your attitude. As the days, weeks or months progress keep your energy high. Be tough enough yet joyful and finish it by being strong and delighted.

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD. Don’t belittle yourself. If you have some suggestions or ideas to share, don’t hesitate to voice it out because, like what was mentioned above, they can also learn from you. It’s just a matter of give and take relationship. THE FINAL WORK. After completing the required hours, it is now time for paperworks. Upon enrolling in Practicum, the colleges provide workbooks in which you need to complete the forms included in it. Then, you’re good to go! Just pass all the requirements in the CCSIR office before the 1st semester ends and wait for your grade to appear in the online portal. The internship program is intended for the college students to be prepared upon entering the big world. It serves as a laboratory to enhance students’ skills and knowledge and to give them a hint of what is waiting for them outside the four corners of the classroom. So for the students, appreciate the importance of the on-the-job training and make the most out of it. You never know, it could be your biggest shot in your career. May the odds be ever in your favor, Pirate. Good luck!

Inside Story:

SUCCESS IN OJT

Hired three days after graduation – a successful intern turned employee story of AB Journalism graduate Nicole Manano in Manila Broadcasting Company is an example of how would on-the-job training can contribute in your future. Manano worked as an intern in DZRH last summer 2015. According to her, she was tasked to help the production assistant, answer calls, and write news articles from press releases. Manano was also given an opportunity to give insights about timely issues on air. But the most challenging work for her during her internship was when she did a field work during the Aliwan Fiesta – one of the biggest annual events of MBC.

“Our job for three days is to find an interviewee and ask questions while on air. I got one interviewee per day, the first one was a dance coach, and the second one was a vendor. It was not an easy task for me because I’m under a student publication, and I never reported live on air,” Manano shared. Then two months before graduation, Manano received a message from her practicum supervisor saying that MBC is looking for news writers. Manano immediately passed her resume and three days after graduation, she started working as a news writer in DZRH. Manano recognizes her college years in LPU as it honed her skills and the internship program of

LPU contributed a lot in her future. “Though the language medium is not the same [since I’m using Filipino in my work], the concept of journalism has not changed. I have applied all the lessons that I learned in LPU and has helped me during my internship and in my field. I am already working with DZRH for almost a year now, and I still continue to apply the knowledge I acquired when I was a college student. The key is to always keep in mind the basics, understand the situation at hand, apply journalism ideas, assess your beat and stay focused,” Manano said. At present, Manano is a news anchor in her program, Sunday Vibes which airs in DZRH.

TAKING THE NEXT STEP

The new journey for senior high WORDS Marielle Justine N. Escabarte

A

s a preparation for the future, the K+12 curriculum equips the students to be globally competent graduates by strengthening their abilities. With this, LPU is one of the universities that took a step in providing quality education for the Senior High School. We asked questions for some of the SHS students on their insights in choosing LPU and how their new journey can enhance their skills.

“This school helps me to boost my self-confidence. [It’s] because it allows me to express my thoughts and ideas in every aspect.” - Monica Sinead Naga, HUMSS “Masaya naman actually. Parang the whole experience is an adventure kasi nasa university kami. Nakakapag-interact kami sa college. Feeling ko parang college na rin ako. Which is, [hinahanda] na rin kami sa college life namin.” -Erica Cortero, HUMSS

“Ayon, maraming school works pero nagagawa naman kasi yung mga facilities nakakatulong talaga katulad ng sa library, which is mas napapadali yung mga assignments… Sobrang helpful po.” - Andrei Bayumbon, ABM

Some chose LPU because of the influence of their friends or family. As for most of the students, they wanted to study in the university because it is the best way to improve their skills and abilities – from the facilities to the quality of education.

19 | O M E G A

“Because of its advanced technology and faculties that can help improve my knowledge and skills. [But] it’s [still] up to me, because learning is a choice and I [chose] to learn well here.” - Jeane Nebrida, ABM

“Because this is the only university that has cheaper tuition, foreign service and an ecofriendly community and also, I can have a good preparation for the course I want.” - Mirabelle M. Agudo, HUMSS

“Mahirap mag-adjust noong umpisa pero noong tumagal na naging okay naman na. Tapos advanced pa, kasi nga parang nandito na rin lahat sa LPU from computers, libraries and facilities.” - Andrea Villas, ABM “(…) High standard [yung] pagtuturo ng mga teachers namin [at] nakakatulong din na mas mag-aral [kaming] mabuti. (…) Highly recommended talaga ‘tong LPU.” - Jordan Marticio, ABM It also helps them to be ready in their chosen careers in the future as the school provide good academic teachings and values to their students. As for Malcolm X, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” These students believe that studying in LPU is a good decision and that it can help them to enhance their potentials. By providing, professional teachers, good facilities and encouraging them to show their best, LPU is ready to mold students’ future.

SAVE MORE BY SPENDING LESS WORDS Kristine Faye V. Anajao ILLUSTRATIONS Jonan B. Paule

Are you always asking for money from your parents to buy what you want and what you need in school? We’re on the same boat, then. Saving money is never easy, and for us college students, it’s the most common struggle. We often miss the opportunity to save up because we have unlimited desires. We tend to overlook the price tags for the flashy designs or ‘kaching!’ just because it’s ‘Instagram worthy’. But don’t worry! You can avoid being a big-spender. With these ultimate money saving tips, you’ll learn to save your money effectively as a student. Start taking advantage of these odds before it’s too late.

RECORD YOUR MONTHLY EXPENSES

ALWAYS CHOOSE WHERE YOU CAN SAVE

Remember that every penny counts. To track how much you spend a day, keep all the receipts you get from every purchase and write it on a notebook. Even the two pesos you spent for the photocopy of your ID or an activity is not excluded. This method helps you to manage your allowance and avoid over-spending. This trains you psychologically as you unconsciously save money just because you want to lessen your expense last month.

Always think on the things you can save money. In your transportation, have an early walk to school if you live near the university. To those who live far from school, think on riding the one which offers the cheapest fare – a bus, PUJ or PUV. With this, you are not just saving your money; you can also exercise your body! For your lunch break, bring some home-made meals instead of buying food which costs P30 pesos or higher. It can really keep your daily expense low and you can also make your Mom pleased. Tummy happy, Mommy happy! *burp*

HAVE A MONEYBOX

KNOW YOUR WANTS FROM YOUR NEEDS

Either an old can of fruit cocktail, a soft drinks bottle, or the old-school piggy bank will do. You can start from coins then paper bills. Do it slowly but surely. In this way, you won’t be able to take out the money you drop — else, guilt will eat you if you open it before it even gets filled up. Note: You should only open it if you’re in a lifeand-death situation.

It’s very easy to differentiate your wants from your needs; however, what we want sometimes become so overwhelming that we think it’s a part of our needs. When shopping, ask yourself first whether an item is a necessity before purchasing it. Learn to say NO to the temptation and don’t make impulsive expenses. Else, you’ll surprise yourself on how much money you’ve spent and regret buying the things you don’t really need.

CUT OUT VICES

If there’s a time you would live as frugal as possible, it is now. Saving money is a big help for your parents and for you, too. Once you finish school, you’ll carry the habit with you. So take the opportunity while you’re at it. That way, you’ll learn how to value money by spending less in order to save more!

For some, vices really take up majority of the allowance. Stop spending big for those cigarettes, alcohol, and computer games. Or maybe, if you really can’t help it, budget your money wisely.

re you the type of person who loves vintage-y stuff? Or maybe a fan of rare locally made items? How about an art enthusiast? If you are, then you should go and visit The HUB: Make Lab, an artwork store located on the ground floor of the First United Building in Escolta – the dethroned ‘Queen of Streets’ in downtown Manila. Open from 11am-8pm every Tuesdays to Sundays, the HUB: Make Lab is a bazaar, thrift store of interesting artworks, pre-loved items, clothes, accessories and hand-made pieces organized by 98B COLLABoratory in partnership with the First United Building and Escolta Commercial Association. 98B COLLABoratory is a group of creatives who aim to help independent artists to showcase their own created products to the public; to promote locally made handicrafts; and also to give opportunities to anyone who’s thinking of doing start-ups. Aside from their vision, the main goal of the 98B is to revive Manila’s Queen of Streets through this kind of bazaar. 25 | O M E G A

(Regina Building located along Kalye Escolta -- Photo by: Google Images)

HISTORY BEHIND Calle Escolta is one of the famous streets in downtown Manila. Little did we know that it was once hailed as the prime business and shopping central district during the Spanish colonial days and even briefly after the war. Sadly, the Queen’s reign ended in 1945 when the Battle of Manila began. The art deco styled buildings designed by well-known Filipino architects were destroyed, different establishments were bombed causing the fall of Escolta. Hence, 98B COLLABoratory came up with a plan to help Escolta regain its former significance. In 2013, the group

started organizing a monthly weekend bazaar called ‘Saturday X Future Market @ Escolta,’ a market where different individual artists, designers, and craft makers are united to sell unique, one-ofa-kind items. Gabriel Villegas, one of the founders of 98B, said in his blog that this project is their way of bringing back the life in the street. Until last year, 98B decided to make a new phase – the evolution of the Saturday Market as they opened the HUB: Make Lab. From a once-a-month bazaar, it became a store that is open almost every day.

UNIQUELY CHEAP FINDS There are really a lot of items to choose at The Hub which you’ll surely be amazed if you’re an aesthete – recycled hand-made accessories, stickers, postcards, mugs, handy journals, bookmarks, pre-loved items, and cultured plants. If you’re into fashion, you’ll absolutely find a piece that will suit your vintage-like #OOTD. Match it with hand-made pieces accessories you can purchase there. Statement bags and shirts are also available there where you can print those famous “hugot lines”. For vintage collectors out there,

this place is perfect for you because they also sell old items like old posters, old cassette tapes, old coins and even old newspapers to name a few. How cool is that? The aforementioned are just some of those classy and artsy items you could find at The Hub. Buying from the retailers will not just give them financial aid but also help them promote their craft. The efforts being done by these groups will not just rehabilitate Escolta but, most significantly, help it form its new identity. Sooner or later, the dethroned ‘Queen of the streets’ will once again rise and claim admiration she deserves.

KABAYAN, BENGUET:

HOME OF THE FIRE MUMMIES WORDS Apple Mae V. Panado PHOTOS John Christian R. Alvariño

A

THE SECRET OF A BEAUTY Kabayan, Benguet is located at the southernmost part of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). It attracts tourists around the world because of the fascinating Mt. Pulag. Its surrounding sceneries also fascinates everyone – from its rocky mountains to its famous four lakes and mystical caves. But aside from the beauty it shows, Kabayan holds secrets only history can explain – another thing in which the place is known for.

27 | O M E G A

Here lies the Opdas Burial Cave which brings creeps to everyone who enters. It is for the very reason that thunder skulls, thousand bones- earning the title “cave of skulls” -- and several coffins will welcome you as you go in. These were the Kabayan mummies made by Benguet’s Ibaloi tribe. This cave dates 500 to 1000 years and considered as the biggest mass burial cave in the municipality. Also, the Timbac and Tinongshol caves are some places in Benguet where the Kabayan mummies are kept.

(Native kid wearing a jacket happily embraces change despite the preservation of history and culture in Benguet.)

dmit it or not, we usually visualize mummies as bodies covered with toilet papers, enclosed in a human-like coffin, and buried in the pyramids of Egypt. For all we know, mummies exist mainly in Egypt because they are known to mummify royalties. Their pyramids serve as tombs to store and protect the body of deceased Pharaohs and Queens. But, did you know that there are also mummies in the Philippines?

(Snapshot of Benguet’s mummified Apo Anno.)

UNRESPECTED CULTURE Yet, it was listed by the World Monuments Fund (WMF) in 1998 as one of the 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World due to some unfortunate events. Some of the burial caves were already closed to the public due to vandalism on the coffins by tourists writing “I was here!”. Moreover, some of the body parts were taken by collectors and natives to use as souvenirs or talismans. One great example of this is the incident where the mummified

THE PHILIPPINE MUMMY Kabayan Mummies were called Fire Mummies because of its mummification process that uses heat. The process is somehow similar to Egyptian practices. Though, Egyptians embalm their remains while the Kabayan mummies are preserved as it is. According to an unpublished doctoral thesis by Dr. Ursula Cariño Perez, “the process of mummification starts by feeding the corpse with salt water to prevent the early decomposition of the internal organs and for the body to dehydrate. It is then placed in a sitting position and tied on what they call the “death chair” to keep the hands and legs in its desired position. Once it dehydrates, the family members of the deceased peels off the outer skin all over the body, this process is called Duduan. Followed by Begisan or

remain of Apo Anno, Benguet’s most cherished cultural treasure, was stolen in 1906. He was assumed to be a tribe leader and a hunter based on his tattoo details. Apo Anno’s remain is heavily tattooed from neck to foot which is believed to be visible until now. His body was returned after a local collector donated it to the National Museum. The museum decided to bring Apo Anno home in Benguet where he was reburied with traditional rites.

deworming, to remove the worms infested in the corpse skin. Controlled heat from a fire built under the death chair smokes the dead. The corpse is alternately dried under the sun during the day and smoked at night. The juice of patani and guava leaves is applied until the body is hardened, intact and smoothly dried.” This process lasts for as long as two months to one year. Once the mummification is complete, the body will be taken to its final resting place inside the cave of its ancestors or in another cave. Mummification is said to be intended for leaders, individuals with high social ranks in the tribe, and for those who have the capacity to shoulder the process. Ibalois have already ended this practice during the Spanish era. However, this culture can still be seen by visiting the caves of Kabayan, Benguet.

Our country is rich in culture and traditions and as Filipinos, we must preserve these so it can still be seen in generations to come. We can never know this part of our history that once lived is we don’t protect it. As Marcus Garvey said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without its roots” – without it, we can never exist.

ARE YOU THE MILLENNIAL PINOY? WORDS Tammy Cattleya B. Delos Reyes ILLUSTRATIONS Hygeian R. Español From posting selfies and statuses on social media to traveling, trying out coffee shops, food parks, and discovering hidden chill-out places, millennials are just about everything. Can you follow with this generation’s trend? We’ll see about that.

INTERNET AND WI-FI Millennials are hooked on anything instant. That’s why internet connection and Wi-Fi is the best definition of craving and instant. For example, Google and Wikipedia are this generation’s best friend because it knows the answer to the assignments due tomorrow. Rest assured nothing will be started days before the deadline. Many blame PLDT, Globe, and Smart telecommunication lines for slow internet speed if they’re not able to pass their paper, I guess.

SELFIES Basically means self-portrait taken by a digital camera using a front cam or with a selfie stick to better capture the view. Millennials nowadays post a series of photos composed of mainly just one side of their face or the “kunwari stolen shot” look, making weird faces resembling Donald Duck or worse, someone who’s going to punch somebody anytime soon. Pinoys are pro at this, making the Philippines the “Selfie Capital of the World”. Are you, too?

29 | O M E G A

POSTING ONLINE Be it Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter, millennials cannot wait to post what they ate, who they are with, what they did, and where the hell they were. It is normal to post what they feel and broadcast it to the world but too much is not okay, right?

INTERNATIONAL BRANDS A lot can be said about someone by what he/she wears or how one present themselves. Expensive brands are millennials’ favorite as long as it’s ‘Instagram-worthy.’ Sadly, many are rooting for things made outside the country than our own.

HUGOT By the age of 16, nearly everyone got their hearts broken by either failed dreams or failed relationships. Broken hearted millennials practically created this term. It means the action of pouring your heart out through words or phrases. The things clearly left unsaid just slurs out and can sometimes be delivered in a sarcastic tone. “It is okay to cry. Crying is a natural response to pain.”- Baymax

PROCRASTINATION AND CRAMMING Ideas burst especially when deadlines are near – a cycle to all millennial out there. This can be considered as the most inevitable habit of this generation. Procrastination is the act of postponing what needs to be done and cramming comes after. Cramming is the best part; who knew two projects and three essays could be done in less than three hours.

ENGLISH Millennials are more familiar with the use of English language than our mother tongue, making it the meter of intelligence. The use of “tag-lish”, tagalog mixed with English words, is common; those who use it are sometimes called “conyo”. Try answering this: what does “dalita” means? Read this: “Nakakapagpabagabag” Want something harder? “Pitongpu’t pitong puting pato”

INSTANT GRATIFICATION One downside of technology created is what we call instant gratification mentality (IGM) among millennials. Information or any data, whether proven or not, is within reach. Everything’s literally a click away. Some just posts things to receive sympathy, others just want to brag. This mentality leads to lapse of judgement and irrational decisions.

ADVENTURE

Youngsters find time to discover new things. Being curious leads to discover of new secret places, somewhere with good food, music, company, and privacy.

I CAN RELATE TO:

0-3 4-6

Taking selfies is not your thing and you probably know what ‘dalita’ means in your sleep. Safe zone. You are neither a typical Filipino millennial but you have some traits, though.

7-8 9

Are you guilty for relying on Google so much? You probably know how to converse in our mother tongue but that’s about it. Face it! You are definitely a Filipino millennial. To answer question number seven, the meaning of ‘dalita’ means indigent.

Can you relate to all that’s stated above? Then you’re really one from this generation. Otherwise, I welcome you to the age of technology, of everything in fast pace – the era of millennials. O M E G A | 30

OPM IS NOT DEAD Words Danica G. del Valle ILLUSTRATION Hygeian R. Español

S

ome people claim that OPM is boring and now lost in history but many things can be said to debunk this belief – OPM is far more than that. Whenever you go to live gigs of OPM artists, you’ll see a lot of people jumping and screaming their hearts out to the songs. It’s not the sound of emptiness but the burning passion of the crowd. OPM or Original Pinoy Music is produced by Filipino musicians and artists. It is a mix of different genres and language mainly Tagalog and English. But over the years, there’s an ongoing debate whether OPM is dead or not. OPM is not defined by what’s on the television, by what’s selling in record stores, or by what’s playing on the radio. It’s not based on ‘What’s Hot’ on the music charts but the mere fact that it could influence and touch people’s hearts, the way people could connect to it through its meaning and sounds, and how people could cry their hearts out or do an infectious dancing because they’ve enjoyed the music. OPM is seen by many as a dying industry in the Philippines when in fact, there are still lots of people supporting it. There are musicians and artists who still try their best to produce and deliver the finest music for the Filipino people. It isn’t dying but believe it or not, expanding and still

31 | O M E G A

growing over the years. Nowadays, artists and musicians treat their music as an art and not just a mere commodity. We may not see a long line of people outside the Astroplus stores waiting for local bands to release an album unlike before but there are many ways to support our music industry. In today’s age, people could listen to our local artists through various platforms such as Spotify, Soundcloud and Youtube. If you have lots of free time then, show your support by going to their gigs (which is even free sometimes! HOW AWESOME IS THAT?) or buy their merchandise. They don’t demand too much; your presence is mere enough. Even if, they are struggling to be heard, the local bands are doing the best they can to produce quality music despite the international competition. So, don’t be mad if your favorite artists’ gets into the mainstream. Be happy for them because they already made it!

We don’t want them to be kept in the dark and in secret, don’t we? There is a different feeling whenever you go to a bar or small cafes to listen to them on their live gigs. And when you see the sea of people jamming and dancing, it is such an overwhelming feeling. You won’t even think for a second that OPM is dead. Look not into their faces but listen to what their songs are telling you. OPM is alive! OPM is always there and it’s not going anywhere. As long as there are passionate musicians and artists that, despite the circumstances, still wants to play. Then, OPM is still alive and kicking.

BENNY BUNNY BAND Into the Kuneho Hole WORDS Danica G. del Valle PHOTO Benny Bunny Band Official Facebook Page

W

hat comes into your mind whenever you hear the word ‘bunny’? Chubby bunny challenge? That cute fluffy animal who eats carrots? Well for me, it’s the awesome band called Benny Bunny Band! Benny Bunny Band (BBB) is a three-piece band composed of friends Benny Giron, Jhenico “Pogi” Dela Cruz and Ess Bodilla. BBB has been existing for many years. It’s just that their distinct and fresh tunes were never heard out loud. BBB’s genre showcases energy and will make you excited once you hear it. As Giron said, “Magaslaw at talon ng talon.” True enough, if you’ve ever been to their gigs you’ll see them jumping and always giving their best to satisfy the audience. Their music is described as

33 | O M E G A

“Kuneho Rock”. It is a combination of vintage pop and rock music. Giron described it as “energizer and happy lang kahit malungkot ang lyrics. Originally, BBB is composed of Benny and his brother only. Back then they’re called ‘Pakingge Ire’ which means “Pakinggan Mo Ito”. Since they got busy with their own lives, they decided to not pursue BBB but later on, Benny decided to push through with it. With his new ukulele skills and his friend Bodilla as his bassist, they started to perform again after three years of hiatus. In 2013, their band became complete and official when they had auditions and got Dela Cruz as their drummer. BBB’s main goal is to affect and touch people’s heart with their

music. Their songs (even though you don’t know them) could speak about your personal problems and helps you get through with it. Almost all of the songs may sound way too exciting but the lyrics could rip your hearts out and are still relatable. BBB, like other OPM bands, is actually a breather from the international music that’s been taking the country’s music scene. As for the current state of the local music industry, Giron answered: “Napupuno yung music scene ng aesthetic lang, hindi porket pogi o maganda nagiging recording artist na.” Listen to what they have to offer. I suggest you to be an Alice and look into these bunnies. See where the rabbit hole leads you.

GOODBYE MAINSTREAM, HELLO INDIE! WORDS Timothy Gerard P. Gucilatar PHOTOS Google Images

N

owadays, Independent films are making its way to the top of the must-watch list alongside local and international movies. However, independent film makers are fighting against many odds in order to save themselves. Independent film producers were challenged by the strength of mainstream marketing and unfazed viewership. Majority of the films are made with tight budget compared to the mainstream. Due to small funds, indie films have limited release and screening period was badly affected, though they remained persistent in producing novelty work. Hence, many were surprised when the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival was bombarded by seven independent films, like the award-winning movie Seklusyon by Eric Matti and the film Vince and Kath and Jame. Despite being tagged as the only mainstream film among last year’s roster, the latter pretty much garnered positive reviews from hardcore critics. Now to set your mind towards an indieoriented preference, here are some must-see indie films aside from those included in the MMFF 2016:

Sakaling Hindi Makarating (2016) Starring Alessandra de Rossi as “Cielo,” the film tells the story of a heartbroken woman who receives a series of postcards with images of scenes and places around the Philippines and love poems that go around with it. She decides to travel to these places in hopes of finding the anonymous “M” who sent her the letters. Film critic Oggs Cruz of Rappler writes, “Given that the film teases about the identity of a certain person who would have completed Cielo’s thirst for the perfect romance, its ending, which keeps things within the universe of uncertainty, is delightfully bittersweet.”

2 COOL 2 BE 4GOTTEN (2016)

This Petersen Vargas film explains that all people are even in life – rich or poor. The story revolved around a decade after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in Pampanga. High school student Felix, portrayed by Khalil Ramos, is dealing with his poor living conditions and is having a hard time in his English class. His life changed when he befriended two half-American transferees. Since then, he found out that glamorous life isn’t always cool.

Sleepless (2015) With Glaiza de Castro as its lead actress along with Dominic Roco, “Sleepless” delves into the lives of two call center agents. Director Prime Cruz and writer Jen Chuaunsu replaced senseless romance with deep friendship. “The conversations, aimless and random, sound like real conversations, and I for one am thankful that they don’t talk about their failed relationships all the time,” Jessica Zafra of Interaksyon said.

O M E G A | 34

Star na si Van Damme Stallone (2016) Named by his mother after two action stars, this film tells us the story of a kid named Van Damme Stallone who struggles with Down Syndrome. His mother is portrayed by famous comedienne Candy Pangilinan. “He chose to keep the film as intimate as possible, far removed from the common expectations of society when it comes to subjects that require special attention,” Oggs Cruz wrote.

Mercury is Mine (2016)

Another masterpiece that features Pokwang and is a direct hit as to how Filipinos treat foreigners, “Mercury is Mine” tells the story of a blonde American boy named Mercury as he works at Carmen’s (Pokwang) karinderia in exchange for food and shelter. Her eatery, situated at the base of Mt. Arayat, attracts tourists because of the mysterious white teenager. “There are certain spots in the film where the narrative unfolds in a manner that is either far too convenient or too obvious. Yet, the story’s seductively bizarre grooves are there only to enunciate a convincing agenda about how the Philippines’ history and ongoing bout with colonialism have rendered its citizens infatuated with anybody with a foreign accent and whose skin color is paler than theirs.” Oggs Cruz wrote.

Apocalypse Child (2015)

Mario Cornejo’s “Apocalypse Child” depicts the reality of the society as it revolves around love and acceptance. Portrayed by Sid Lucero, Ford is a surfing instructor from Philippines. He was the lovechild of US director Francis Coppola. He wasted his youth waiting as his mother petition Coppola to acknowledge him as his son. He seems happy and contented with his beach lifestyle, until his childhood best friend Rich returns and forces him to face realities.

35 | O M E G A

Ang Huling Cha Cha ni Anita (2013)

Ang Nawawala (2012) Dominic Roco plays the role of Gibson Bonifacio, a guy who stopped speaking after a traumatic past concerning his twin brother. The film tells us the story of a dysfunctional family who has to celebrate the death anniversary of Gibson’s dead twin on holidays. “Not every scene works: the film’s paper-thin antagonist oversimplifies the romantic conflict, and some of the quirkier bits of dialogue fall flat. But for the most part, the movie capably keeps it together,” Film critic Philbert Dy said about the film.

This coming-of-age film tells us the story of twelve-year old Anita (Teri Malvar) who innocently fell in love with Pilar (Angel Aquino), thus spurting the realization of her sexual awakening. “The film has the temerity to trudge through some really uncomfortable material, laying out hard truths through a breathless story about women and the things that happen to women.” Philbert Dy wrote.

Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa (2011)

Paulo Avelino and Rocco Nacino engaged in a not so much of an LGBT film as they breathe life out of Marlon and Dennis. Marlon (Avelino) feels something for dance teacher Karen (played by Jean Garcia). In an effort to catch the attention of Karen, who is also his literature professor, he asks Dennis (Nacino) to teach him the dances that Karen teaches. This film is rich in dance and poem, with Carlos Palanca Memorial awardee Alvin Yapan as its director. He is also the director of Oro, an MMFF 2016 film.

Muli (2010)

Another Carlos Palanca Memorial awardee for Dulang Pampelikula in screenplay on 2009, Jerry Gracio’s “Muli” is set during the Marcos presidency. The film tells the frustrating love story of ex-seminarian and activist Jun (portrayed by Sid Lucero) and lawyer Errol (played by Cogie Domingo). When asked about the film, Gracio commented that when a gay is “being written on the page and projected on screen. But I believe that there should be a multi-faceted projection of that image.”

Considering that many indie films are timeless and relevant works of art, it has contributed to the audiences’ keen sense of artistry and creative intuition. With a daring approach, these independent films have taken infantile steps to show how far Filipino filmmakers can stretch the value of their storylines. Their effort proves that beyond star-studded movies, it is rich in terms of screenplay and cinematography that they can offer to the Filipino people. O M E G A | 36

REVIEWER’S CORNER BUCKET-LIST OF BOOKS WORDS Ericka May B. Mendoza PHOTOS Google Images ILLUSTRATION Kristine Faye V. Anajao

You don’t have to be out and about to go places – adventures can just be a page away. Surround yourself this vacation with these books that will surely take you on an emotional roller coaster ride, in places a gazillion words away from your own.

MY HEART AND OTHER BLACK HOLES by Jasmine Warga

What is it about: In the aftermath of her father’s crime, Aysel was shunned by everyone else, even by her own family. Now an outcast, she spends more of her time browsing suicide websites where she meets Roman, a teen stricken by a family tragedy and is need of a suicide partner. They agreed to kill themselves on a specific day. But as they spend the remaining days together, Aysel begins to question her decision when she realizes Roman has given her something she could hold on to – hope. Why you need to read the book: Only a few people realize how serious depression can be and can eventually lead to suicide when left untreated. This book gives an insight on depression, and reminds us that there is always hope during dark times. Favorite Quote: “I will be stronger than my sadness.”

THE TIME KEEPER by Mitch Albom

What is it about: Father Time was doomed to spend his life in a cave, listening to the voices of people who beg for more time. This was after he measured God’s greatest gift and introduced the first clock to human kind. Seeing him nearly broken, He gave him chance to redeem himself. He was sent to the present world with a magic hourglass in hand and a mission to carry out: to teach two earthly people the true essence of time. Why you need to read the book: This book will teach you to appreciate the time that was given to you, to cherish every moment and those who are part of it, and be grateful for it whether it turns out good or bad. Favorite Quote: “Time is not something you give back. The very next moment may be an answer to your prayer. To deny that is to deny the most important part of the future.”

WHAT’S A GIRL GOTTA DO? By Holly Bourne

What is it about: After being harassed by two men on her way to college, Lottie trumps up a way to fight sexism. She comes up with the project VAGILANTE, wherein she calls out EVERY act of inequality she witnesses. Things get out of hand when Lottie begins to take the project way too seriously, risking her relationships and her own future in the process. Why you need to read the book: Aside from the totally feminist theme of the story, it tells us that we should speak out and fight for what we believe in, no matter how hard the battle gets. Favorite Quote: “When you fight for what you believe in, you come across a lot of obstacles… But I was beginning to realize, the biggest hurdle to overcome was the hurdle of yourself.”

NORWEGIAN WOOD by Haruki Murakami

What is it about: After the loss of a loved one, Toru and Naoko finds comfort in each other’s company. But Naoko was sent away to heal after the incident on her 20th birthday, leaving Toru on his own. He finds himself reaching out for companionship in the midst of his isolation and drawn to a very liberated woman named Midori. Why you need to read the book: This book explores the human mind but mostly focuses on morality and sadness. Each of us deals with it differently, either you let it trap and consume you or you free yourself from it and embrace what life has to offer. Favorite Quote: “Death is not the opposite of life but an innate part of life.”

THE MEMORY BOOK by Lara Avery

What is it about: Sammie is a girl with plans. She’s got her whole life figured out, until she discovers she has dementia, a rare genetic disorder that will take her most prized possession away – her memory. Thus, the Memory Book is born – a document where she records every thought and moment after the discovery of her illness. Why you need to read the book: This book will show you that even when some things don’t go according to what you wanted it to be, you will soon find the joy in the new path you’re taking, even more than you ought to be. Favorite Quote: “Life is not just a series of triumphs.”

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS by M.R. Carey

What is it about: Every morning, Melanie is taken out from her cellin, a strapped wheelchair by a group of armed men and escort her to the classroom. This is fine with Melanie as long as Miss Justineau, her favorite teacher, is there waiting for her. But everything changes when the real world came crashing over her, and she comes face-to-face with the monster that dwells in it – just like the one inside her. Why you need to read the book: This book is not your usual post-apocalyptic story. Moreover, it teaches us the true meaning of humanity, and that being one is more than being born of the flesh. Favorite Quote: “You can’t save people from the world. There’s nowhere else to take them.”

LEMONADE MOUTH by Mark Peter Hughes

What is it about: Five teenagers ended up in detention one day for different reasons – breaking the rules, skipping class, swearing, throwing spitball, having a PDA. It was awkward and silent in the room until the tune from the radio came and everyone just jammed to the beat. Since then, no one thought they would create an unbreakable bond and become the voice of their generation. Why you need to read the book: This book shows how one person can influence the many, how one group can empower the youth, and how one song can represent the cries of the people. Each character dealt with their own ghost and, with each other, overcame their adversities. It also demonstrates how important friendship is. Favorite Quote: “There will always be those who don’t appreciate the work of true visionaries. It doesn’t matter. To an artist, beauty and honesty are everything.”

SARTORIALISM WORDS Jerico P. Fania PHOTOS Leander Keithric P. Gaffud

WHAT IS SARTORIALISM? It refers to an interest in matters of or relating to the tailoring of clothing. .

39 | O M E G A

Admit it, your wardrobe’s in need of a major overhaul. Now that a new year has dawned upon us, it’s high time you up your style. Here’s how:

COLOR ME EARTHY Taking a cue from Pantone’s Color of the Year (Greenery, 15-0343),

It is one big fashion trend this 2017 will be earthy tones or hues that look like they’re straight out of a zoo, a nature park, or a wildlife reserve. I kid you not, earth tones will be HUGE in the months to come.

DENIM DIVA Okay, I must admit: I honestly did not expect the denim skirt’s resurgence. At first, this 70s fad’s ultra-casualness repulses me. But I’ve come to love it – and you should, too! The trick? Always tuck your top in your denim mini-skirt. And because of its aforementioned ultra-casualness, you can opt to dress it up or dress it down. For example, pair it with a leather jacket, white button-down, and sneakers-or heels, if you like it--and you’re good to go. Go rock that denim skirt like you’re some DemnaGvasalia muse, girl!

41 | O M E G A

PARKA PANDEMONIUM

The parka (or anorak) made waves during last year’s fall/winter season. Yet, this trend sure is here to stay. The parka is not only fit for Manila’s unpredictable weather but it’s also perfect for the fashion fiends who are going for that lumberjack, devil-may-care aesthetic. An obscurely large Parka is the sure-fire way bringing a Vetements lookbook to life – even when you’re just wearing H&M or Bershka.

O M E G A | 42

CRAZY FOR CULOTTES

Ah, the culottes – the skirt and pants’ obscure offspring. However, donning culottes can be a little tricky. Because of its boxy silhouette, it can make you look 5 inches smaller. To avoid this, you either have to (1) wear culottes with heels or (2) pair it with a relatively smaller or slightly revealing top.

BEAUTY GAMING

LEVEL UP! WORDS Ma. Concepcion G. Capistrano and Diana Theresa I. Encarnacion PHOTOS John Christian R. Alvariño

Nowadays, what matters most to people is your appearance. A lot of us are defined by how we look on the outside rather than who we really are inside. Hence, we use different treatments that could enhance our facial features such as cosmetics. Therefore, we bring our beauty game to the next level. Different make-up techniques are already created and applied. Like the trend today, majority of the women population today use the two most popular make-up styles – the Korean and Western look – many of which became popular because of Pia Wurtzbach, Kendall Jenner, and of course, Korean drama actresses. To help you achieve these trendy looks, we have listed a step-by- step procedure you can try to level up your beauty game.

WESTERN LOOK The Western look is more edgy and precise. As seen on models Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, this style is famous for emphasizing the curves of your face, particularly the cheekbones and nose.

FACE. Apply moisturizer and primer to hydrate your face. Next, apply foundation all over your face and blend it onto your neck. Don’t forget to conceal the unwanted things. Put a finishing powder then contour to sharpen some parts of your face.

EYEBROWS. Using your angled brush, put a bottom line on your eyebrows then draw top line in 3/4 way. After that, fill-in and blend it with brow shadow. To finish it, put some concealer on the edges to remove the excess colors around the eyebrows.

EYES. First, put an eyeshadow base on your lid. Second, on the outer area of your eyes, put a darker color and blend onto the crease area. After that, use an eyeliner for your upper lash line. Lastly, put a mascara in your eyelashes and place that fascinating eyelash extension.

O M E G A | 44

KOREAN STYLE

As Korean dramas continuously gain its fame, so does the Korean look. This style aims to attain a much more natural look. It promotes the “no make-up” appearance and highlights Asian beauty.

FACE. Apply a BB cream to your face. Remember to put just an ample amount to achieve the dewy and flawless look. You may also contour your jawline to make your face smaller.

EYEBROWS. The Korean look has the straight eyebrow shape but for those who have a different shape of eyebrows, it’s okay. First, draw an outline at the lower part of your eyebrow then smudge it carefully. Fill it with an eyebrow pencil if necessary.

EYES. Droopy eyeliner is the best style to use for the said look. For the end point of your eyeliner, end the line at the corner of your eye. Slightly draw the end of your line a bit downwards, giving your eyes a droopy look. Next, apply a simple shimmery eyeshadow. To complete the eye of your Korean look, create an aegyosal or the “eyebag” effect in Korea. Use an eyeshadow or a highlighter and apply it lightly to your lower eyelid to give you the “eye smile” effect. In case you are wondering, you don’t have to apply blush to your face since the Korean look emphasizes the pale complexion of your face. Now, you can use this look as your “everyday” make-up without investing much time and effort but still look naturally beautiful.

Now girls, we’ve given you a step-by step makeup session in Western and Korean Style. Keep glam and beautiful!

SWIM FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE WORDS Francis Felix C. Falgui ILLUSTRATION Kristine Faye V. Anajao

ports is not only known to promote a healthier lifestyle but it gives more benefits. Aside from it expands your horizon, it can be a instrument to overcome lifelong ailments. One such case is the story of Maureen Mallares, an athlete who overcame asthma through swimming. Mallares is a swimmer from the LPU Pirates who helped her team earn the 5th spot in the recent NCAA Season 92 swimming tournament. She is a third year student, taking Bachelor of Science in International and Hospitality Management major in Cruise Line Operations in Culinary Arts. She suffered asthma since childhood, something that affected her family. She took up swimming to get rid of this illness. Asthma is a respiratory condition which makes the airways of the lungs narrow, resulting to breathing difficulty. “Sa ngayon hindi na, siguro ubo nalang, pero nawawala din. Matagal na kasi siyang [asthma] wala eh. Then ngayon inaatake nalang ako ng ubo kapag siyempre pagod, may sakit, ganun pero hindi na tulad ng asthma,” Mallares said as she shared her current state.

The Pirate swimmer is the middle child of three children. When Maureen was in third grade, she learned how to swim because of her uncle who is a swimming coach. Since then, she used swimming as a way to improve her health. Experts say that sports help your reduce many health risks and are suggesting that swimming is a great way to overcome asthma. According to Natasha Freutel, an occupational therapist in California on Livestrong.com, “Swimming is a healthy form of aerobic exercise for people with asthma, especially for those whose symptoms are triggered by outdoor allergies or cold temperatures”. The advantages of water-based exercise for people with asthma include breathing warm, humid air that often lacks or contains reduced levels of allergy-triggering substances found outdoors. Some research suggests that swimming regularly may improve lung function in people with asthma.” In order to maintain her good condition, Mallares and her teammates swim for three hours for five-six times a week as part of their training. Other than swimming, she and her

colleagues also lift weights for two hours for three times a week. Moreover, she implements a no sweets-junk foods-soft drinks diet to help her stay in shape. With this, Mallares encourages other people to engage in swimming for it opens new doors for you and at the same time may help you in your studies. “Well, ine-encourage ko sila mag-join ng swimming, kasi unanguna, maganda nga siya sa health, nagiging sobrang healthy ang katawan mo. ‘Pag nagswi-swimming ka, siyempre may chance ka [ring] makakuha ng scholarship para [makatulong] na rin sa pag-aaral,” Mallares explained. Other than opportunities and to improve one’s health, Mallares also said that swimming can also be a medium to hone your interpersonal skills. “Siguro benefits sa sarili ko, nag-eenjoy ako kapag nagswi-swim ako, and nakakasama ako sa team ko, na naging family ko na rin.” Aside from swimming, there are lots of sports that have equal benefits and can suit the needs of your body, and your interests. You can try all of it but it is up to you to find the right one for you.

The uniqueness they offer is a true innovation in the food business: serving orders via a “bullet train”. However, it is not an actual bullet train, but rather an elongated dish or tray that carries the dishes of ordered food that stops right by your table. It’s experiencing Japanese cuisine – millennial style.

WHERE TO FIND THIS SUSHI HAVEN Genki Sushi has some branches conveniently placed within the metro, including a newlyopened one in Diliman, Quezon City. However, their main branch is located in what is considered as one of the “high-end” places in the country – Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Undeniably, BGC is also considered as one of the most popular go to places, especially for the millennials who can never leave without their smartphones. Its busy yet posh environment of skyscrapers is almost the epitome of picture perfect—click a shot for your social media account.

REASONS TO LOVE GENKI There is a wide (and wild!) range of competition in the food business. To serve good food is not enough, because it is not just the stomach’s hunger that needs satisfaction, the eyes must also enjoy the sight of the food and the environment. With BGC offering a variety of choices when it comes to restaurants, Genki Sushi is definitely a must-try. It is perfect for the tech-savvy millennials due to the innovation it offers: order your food via a touch screen tablet, confirm your orders, and within minutes, voíla! Your food arrives via train.

51 | O M E G A

It is inspired by the shinkansen conveyor belt trend in Japan, wherein plates of sushi are placed in a conveyor belt that conveniently goes around a table from customers may simply pick out from. For a special type of order, a touch screen tablet is also conveniently placed for the customers to use, and once the food arrives or passes by your place, a beep will be heard to indicate the arrival of your order. What made Genki Sushi different? It fused the two trends in their restaurant. To ensure the freshness of their customers’ food, every order is to be made via the tablet.

THE BEST PART? What Genki Sushi offers is Japanese food crafted for the Filipino palate. This makes their best sellers weirdly meals served over a bowl of steamed white rice – the Black Pepper Chicken Don and Chicken Teriyaki. They also offer a variety of sushi, hence the name. Among them are Seared Salmon with Black Pepper—slices of seared salmon lathered with Japanese mayonnaise and sprinkled

with black pepper over small logs of rice; California roll— or, let’s say the infamous California Maki; Kanikama roll—which is composed of imitation crab meat, cucumber strips, and rice in temaki form. Other items on the menu include lobster salad roll, spicy tuna roll, salmon sashimi, fried tofu skin, egg pollock roe, cheese croquette nigiri, tuna balls (croquette) with teriyaki sauce,

cheese croquette, and many more. For those who have a sweet tooth or constantly crave for desserts, they offer traditional tiramisu. For matcha lovers, they have matcha double fromage, and matcha ice cream. It is also worth noting that each table has its own canister of matcha powder, faucet-like dispenser that dispenses hot water, should one want to drink tea.

O M E G A | 52

THE WOW FACTOR As the dining experience comes to an end, the trusted tablet once again comes handy—because the bill can be seen then. You can even view it any time you wish to because every confirmed order gets added immediately. It provides more convenience as compared to the traditional way of billing out. Goodbye to long lines at the counter!

Innovation has truly come a long way, and it is no different for Genki Sushi which caters to the Filipino audience with their Japanese style. What makes it a good innovation is the fact that they made use of the continuous advancement or growth in technology to up their game. It’s a new concept—for a lot of Filipinos, at least—and one that people will absolutely look forward to experiencing.

LOOKING THROUGH THE EYES OF A WANDERER

W

hether it’s about having fun, indulging your metime, or wanting to experience the different cultures, traveling is still one of the most rewarding things to do in life. Some may say that it is solely for those who can afford to book for deluxe trips, stay in an expensive hotel, or dine in fancy restaurants. Little did they know that traveling is not about these but three very important things – fun, excitement, and experience. For those who are consumed by wanderlust, traveling is about experiencing new things while having fun and pampering yourself in the freedom from all your problems. Other people find this escapade really amusing

and self-indulging. While for some, this is how they find peace, move on from their heartbreaks, fallbacks, or simply connect to the person they once were. As to Lycean alumna Angela Grace Matulac, traveling is best done to spice up her life and something that she always wanted to do. This 21-year old Journalism graduate has already seen wonders from the three main islands of the Philippines within just one year. She’s already ticked her ‘wander-list’ and seen the beauty of LuzViMin through the islands of Davao, Samal, Surigao, Compostela Valley, Agusan, Cebu, Bohol, Bolinao, and La-Union. Now, she is looking forward for some international trips.

WHAT SHE DISCOVERED Her desire to travel and explore the country was ignited by two of her favorite Journalism professors, Dr. Ronald Henson and Mr. Jimmy Oblena. Undoubtedly, these professors guided her on knowing the thing that she really loves the most – traveling. Just like anybody else, she travels for experience and peace of mind; but, she always prefer the road less taken and always makes sure that every adventure she takes has a different story – something that would be reminiscent in the future. “Number one [reason why I travel is] experience. Kasi ang saya umalis ng ikaw lang ang magde-decide kung anong gusto mong gawin... parang napaka-free mo, napaka-liberated

59 | O M E G A

mo,” Matulac emphasized. When asked about what she discovered about herself upon visiting various destinations, she simply described the changes she had observed with herself upon traveling. “So number one, di [pala] ako gan’ong ka-anti-social. Pangalawa, matapang [pala] ako… di ko talaga in-expect na matapang ako. Last one, naging marunong akong mag-budget ng pera”, she further explained. Admittedly, some of her adventures are being planned just few days before her actual departure date. As a backpacker, she always makes sure that she’s prepared of her nitty-gritties and is fully equipped with the things she needed the most for her adventures.

Moreover, she shared that there are times when she becomes clueless of what to do and where to go in a certain place. Being wise, she tends to communicate with someone or seek help from the locals to show her the right path. Meanwhile, she highlighted the importance of this trait that all travelers must have – bravery. Being brave will help you outcome your fears and let you do more awesome things during your adventures. Her canyoneering experience which got her jumping on a cliff 30-ft. high and swimming through depths she doesn’t even know made her adrenaline rush with excitement and fulfillment; thus, giving her more reasons to enjoy her adventures.

people you meet, [you’ll] get to learn something,” Matulac further advised. Moreover, she also suggested that being “wais” or budget-wise might become really handy when traveling. Her tip? Postpone the expensive ones and visit the places that suits your budget. Debunking the ideology of other people, she believes that traveling is not just for rich people. Managing your budget is a BIG thing when traveling. It’s what you need the most in order to survive a trip. A sun block, power bank, notebook, and pen are just some of the must-haves that she thinks you need to include in your backpack aside from your clothes. Bet you wouldn’t want to forget bringing your smartphones or your DSLR with you so you can grab some nice photos of your trip for your physical

and online albums. On the other hand, all travelers must also keep in mind the importance of respecting the places they are visiting. Guess you don’t want to bring home angry elementals or completely destroy Mother Earth. Cliché as it seems but, like the sign in the Baltimore Grotto goes, “Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time.” Nonetheless, it will always be up to you as if you will take the leap of fate towards enjoyment and discovering more of yourself. If so, then traveling is really the food for your soul, thus, Matulac leaves some sort of advice. “Basta hangga’t wala kang naha-hassle, do what you want. Kasi masaya siya, sobra.” Matulac ended.

TRAVELING REMINDERS FOR WANNABEES For millennials, traveling is considered as one of the trends today. Being one of the millenials, Matulac points out some things for traveler wannabees to keep in mind in order to enjoy their escapade. Traveling is not compulsory. It is more of your burning passion towards trying something out of your comfort zone and filling yourself with new memories that you will treasure the most. It is about challenging yourself to do things you don’t usually do, mingling with some people you do not really know while living a simple life in an environment that is very unfamiliar to you. “I suggest mag-travel sila [millennials] kase sobrang dami nilang madi-discover about sa sarili nila (…) Marami ka ring mami-meet. ravel is not something only the rich and privilege people can afford to experience. There are lots of things you can do to prove that notion wrong. However, you must know how to do it – from looking for destination to planning your itineraries. As it is one of today’s trend, traveling is within reach. The cost will never be a problem as you can have an adventure with only a tight budget. But apparently, our busy lives prevent us to have a vacation. Worry no more! There are many places near Metro Manila that could take your breath away, places you can still visit to chill, unwind and get away from stress and reality. Here are some:

Mt. Balagbag, Bulacan If you’re someone who loves heights and climbing, this place is for you. Located near San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan, Mount Balagbag is a nice place to go for hikes. Aside from its nearness, the place is also preferable because of its easy and wide trail with approximately 1-2 hour hiking time. Some of the hikers prefer dim trekking, which is hiking at early morning or late afternoon, to avoid getting sunburned. Aside from these, breath-taking city lights and views coming from Ortigas and some parts of Metro Manila can be seen at night. Its best sceneries can be found at

the top of the mountain while the cool breeze of air hugs you, a perfect stress-reliever. With Php55, you can get there through a 2-hour bus trip from Cubao that’ll bring you Tungko. From there, you need to pay Php27 to ride a jeepney for 1-hour to Licao-licao. From Licao-licao, you will pay a barangay fee of Php10 and a Php30 environmental fee before you can go up to the mountain. With just a total of P194 and a 3-hour ride, you can now get this awe-inspiring climb and your typical day will surely be a wonderful one.

In the Southern part of Manila lies the white sand beach and blue-colored waters of Laiya that will surely get you mesmerized. The rocks that are being hugged continuously by the waters, the tall coconut trees serve as the sheds against the scorching heat of the sun, and the fresh air to breathe in are the perfect rewards for tons of deadlines, projects, examinations and other endless school works that fills up your busy schedule. Located at San Juan, Batangas, this tropical paradise is reachable after a

2-hour journey and will only cost you less than Php1000 to get there. From Pasay, take a bus going to San Juan, Batangas which costs around Php220. After taking the bus, a Php50 jeepney fare will get you to Barangay Laiya. A variation of resorts can be found in the area so food and accommodation will not be much of a problem. An estimated expense of Php540 will take you to an oasis that you have long been waiting for even without traveling that far.

Malibiklibik Falls, Cavite Just about 2 hours away in the city is the province of Bailen, Cavite where you will find one of its hidden treasures, the Malibiklibik Falls. A 15 to 20-minute hike leads you to an enchanted falls where you can relax and be with nature. To get to the beautiful Malibiklibik Falls, ride a Saulog Bus or any bus from Lawton to Naic, Cavite. The trip will consume a 2 hours’ travel, the ordinary fare will cost Php78 and Php62 if you have your student ID with you. Upon arrival, ride

a tricycle with a Php10 fare to Jeep Terminal. Upon arrival, find the jeepney whose destination is to Bailen. Pay Php26 then tell the driver to drop you off at Barangay Lumipa. Once you get there, go to the Barangay Hall and log in so they can provide you with a tour guide that will escort you to the Malibiklibik Falls. The tour guide’s fee is Php250 for a maximum of 8-10 persons.

NOW THAT YOU KNOW SOME PLACES TO HAVE AT LEAST A SHORT BREAK, HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

• Wear comfortable clothes that is suitable for a hike and/or a swim.

• Taking “Instagram-worthy” pictures is fun but appreciating the scenery is a lot more gratifying.

• Bringing your own food could save you money. Rice meals and snacks should never run out while on the trail.

• Enjoy as much as you want but always remember places like these are a treasure that you have to protect.

• Never leave traces. Try to bring a plastic or keep a space in your backpack for litters. Don’t make the Earth a one big dump.

NOW IN THE METRO:

Playgrounds for the Kids at Heart

WORDS Shiella Mae J. Clado PHOTOS Google Images Have you had that one moment wherein you reflected your childhood and said, “buti pa noong bata ako, walang stress”? We commonly asked ourselves this once we the age where reality slaps us with a lot of responsibilities, bills, and hours of work. In the complicated and chaotic life of an adult, we always think and find ways on how to let loose. Some travel and find inner peace or take time and reconnect with the family. Others want to experience their long-lost kiddie self. The feeling of adrenaline rush when we’re playing hide and seek while looking for a place to hide and even that moment when we’re up in the air while playing Chinese garter. Unfortunately, we can’t bring back those good old times and be a kid again. However, we can relive and feel the younger us again while checking out one of these adult playground places in Manila that you might want to try. Why not add it in your bucket list with your playmates, I mean, friends?

Ball Pit Manila

Break Out Philippines

Remember those fun slides with thousands of balls at the bottom? One of the newest craze in town is the Ball Pit Manila, which has 20 square meters pop-up installations that was originally inspired by similar set-up in London and New York. Since most children playgrounds won’t allow adults in the inside (we wouldn’t fit anyway), the Ball Pit Manila is created exclusively for adults from ages 16 and above. Imagine if a kid gets lost underneath the pool of thousand of balls, it’ll be so exhausting to find them, right? Also, it has a café where you can order some coffee or tea while sitting on the ball pit’s edge. It

feels a bit nostalgic and it will surely bring back those sweet memories of yours as a child. However, they don’t allow walk-ins so be sure to book ahead if you plan on jumping in this amusing place. They have an entrance fee of P349 for one hour of jumping, taking pictures and even just laying down in the pit, which also comes with two rounds of regular coffee and ice tea. Keep in mind that monthly birthday celebrants’ entrance is free.

If you are one of those game players who want to experience real life simulation game or someone who just loves the thrill of playing detective and solving problems, the Break Out Philippines is definitely for you! This is the first real-life escape room game in Manila. It is just like those typical detective games you play in your phone or computer but in reality. You get to exercise and test your wits on action. You have to plan, solve and escape on your own but googling for hints is not allowed. The main goal is to escape in a room for only 45 minutes. So just imagine, you’re one of those characters in your favorite suspense movie; minus the one’s going to chop your head off, don’t worry.

The game’s concept originated in Japan and made its way to different countries before finally landing on the Philippines. It is best to be played with the whole barkada as they promote teamwork on planning and solving the different puzzles in their rooms. They also offer a variety of discounts from lifetime membership on to group markdowns. The bigger the group, the higher the discount. So, always remember that more heads are better than one!

Trampoline Park Zero Gravity Zone Are you a “varsity” in playing the Chinese garter when you were a kid? Or just stressed and wants to find a way to stretch and work out in a fun way? Then you must check out Trampoline Park, one of the first trampoline grounds in the Philippines. Originally a warehouse, the park offers different kinds of activities such as the main court where you can practice your dunking skills in basketball, an extreme game of dodgeball, and even volleyball – while jumping

on trampolines. If you’re not that much into sports then the huge foam pit suits you. They offer different pricing depending on the day and time, which ranges from P180P200. Located at: The Portal, Mayflower Street, Greenfield District, Mandaluyong, 1550 Metro Manila Operating hours: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm

Ninja Academy

If you’re one of those ninja wannabes like yours truly, then head to the Ninja Academy, a haven for people who wants to secretly wear a black suit and creep through the night while saving people’s lives or just a fan of Naruto and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This awesome facility is mostly for people who wants to learn parkour. However, they offer a wide variety of training programs and obstacle courses that can hone your skills on being the true ninja.

The rate of the academy is P290 for students pass and P350 for walk-ins. This includes all-access of facilities for 3 hours and a free gauntlet class. Located at: #155 Dr.Sixto Antonio Avenue, Pasig City, PH / Warehouse 2 BNM7210 Group Corporation, Manila Doctors Village Road, Las Pinas, PH Operating hours: Mon-Fri: 1:00 pm – 9:00pm, Sat: 10:00 am – 9:00 pm, Sun: 10am-5pm

That’s just four of the many adult playgrounds and stress-relievers that you can find in Manila. With this in mind, there are a lot more things to do in bringing up that sweet nostalgic memories and just relive the good old year like playing video games or enjoying the rain from time to time, perhaps? Don’t worry, we’ve all been the “Sana bata na lang ako ulit” stage. But for more adventures, why not follow this trail to Neverland and stay a kid… at heart.

LYCEAN’S TRAVEL PLAYLIST WORDS Dorothea M. Pagayunan ILLUSTRATION Jaenelle M. Ilagan

There’s always that certain song that helps us escape from reality for once and keeps us going as we step towards new adventures in our life. You may be that one person who pretends to be in a music video while looking out sadly in the car’s window or the other one who throws her hand up high while shouting the lyrics of the song in the air, thus, there goes your travel playlist. These songs might not just be helpful on soothing your soul as you travel but also adds more beat to your monotonous life. We give you this travel playlist from the contributions of the Lyceans to accompany you on your next journey.

“WHOLE LOTTA YOU” By A Rocket to the Moon

Reasons: With its catchy beat and chill vibe, this song, for me, is the perfect travel playlist staple. Not only does it have the capability to make one dance all of his/her worries away, but it also exceptionally captures the feeling of being young: brave and invincible in dreaming, feeling and exploring new things. This song is great for road trips with your barkada, or even if you’ve had a gloomy day and you just want a picker-upper on your way home. Rest assured, you will find yourself singing along with a big, radiant smile on your face. -Tricia Ann Coleen M. Bautista, 3rd year, BSFS-Diplomacy

“SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW” by Keane

Reasons: As a teenager, inspiration is inevitable. People will come into your life to make you feel good; some, however, will leave. But if you find people you can be with in every step of the way, let them stay and let them come with you to your journey. This song is always in my travel playlist because it reminds me to be at peace in a place where I can be myself, with people that I love most in the world; and that is some place I am with them, wherever we may be. -Patricia Samin, 2nd year, AB Journalism

SPRING DAY By Bangtan Boys (BTS)

“SIMPLE”

By Woozi (Seventeen)

Reasons: Being on the road isn’t as fun and meaningful unless you’re traveling to see someone special. And having a long-distance friendship and relationship makes this song extra special.

Reasons: Yes, for some of you already know him and the song, this might be a k-pop song but I assure you that this is very relaxing and you’ll be emotional while listening to it to the point that you will feel like you are shooting a music video. Then later, you’ll realize that you are already at your destination. I’ll share part of the song lyrics to ya’ll:

“How long must I wait How many more nights must I stay up So that I’ll be able to see you, able to see you So that I’ll be able to meet you, able to meet you If you wait for just a little If you just stay up a few more nights I’ll come to meet you I’ll come pick you up”

“WAITING ON THE WORLD TO CHANGE” By John Mayer

Reasons: I honestly listen to all kinds of genres so long as the song catches my attention and depending on my mood when I travel. When I feel like dancing, I would listen to hip hop or raps by Eminem. When I feel gloomy, I would listen to mellow music. But no matter what my mood is, this particular song would always play for several times, especially when I travel with my dad. Mainly because we both like John Mayer but also because of the message of the song. For me, I think the song is not to lecture us, particularly the youth, to do something that could impact humankind but its more of a reminder that if we just sit and do nothing, the world will never get better. I guess the song is trying to say that in time, we would get the chance to try and change the world for the better. -Marithe Francois T. Tabo, Irregular, AB Journalism

“CASTLE ON THE HILL” By Ed Sheeran

Reasons: “Made friends and lost them through the years and I’ve not seen the roaring fields in so long I know I’ve grown And I can’t wait to go home” Yes, you guessed it right. These are [some] lines [from] the song Castle on the hill by Ed Sheeran. When this song came out, every time I hear it, I imagine what I [would] feel when the day comes that I need to be independent. For sure I will miss all of the people who are close to my heart. [Even if it’s new,] this song makes me feel home and it will always be in my travel playlist. -Jamaella Sofia Calo, SHS - Grade 11, ABM

“GOOD TIME”

By Owl City ft. Carly Rae Jepsen

Reasons: I only travel for two reasons, one is because for a class trip, and for vacation. I only expect one thing, a good time. Fun fact, the lyrics about just throwing whatever clothes and just knowing it will be a good time, is the best part. But let’s be honest, even if you just travel to the mall or to school, you’d expect good time. This song is not to “boom box” upbeat, but you can dance and chill to it. -Lara Shane Gaspar, 4th year AB Journalism

“Jeepney Love Story” by Yeng Constantino

Reasons: Ayoko ng pumara kahit saan pa lumiko, Ayoko ng pumara sana di na huminto, Ayoko ng pumara, Ayoko na kung ikaw ang kasama. I know it’s a bit too old and outdated but it’s fine. I played this song as we traveled to Benguet because the lyrics made me feel that I [still] don’t want to go, I don’t want this to end. I want more because Benguet is such a beauty that everyday, you will wake up and appreciate the wind, the sun, the mountains and everything that your eyes can see. You will [admire] how amazing God is for [making this masterpiece]. But this song is not about my lover [but] my friends whom I [spent time] with [in] Benguet. We walk for long 3 hours to [visit] Tinongshol cave, asked for water [from a] stranger to [quench] our thirst [and] used [only] one tumbler. [What’s the fun thing in it?] When [we’re together], of course! We laughed, talked, had fun together, wait for each other, and appreciated the view together… These moments [were the things] I wish [would] never end, ‘cause when I’m with them, “ayoko ng pumara kahit saan pa lumiko.” -Jonamel Baquiran 4th year, AB Journalism

“With a Smile” by Eraserheads

Reasons: I do love travelling and music because it is my way of relaxing and running away from stress. Whenever I go to a trip I always bring my mobile and earphones with me and play some music along the journey. If there is one certain song that’s always on my travel playlist it would be the song titled with a smile by Eraserheads, also called Eheads. This song is about a guy who tries to lift the mood or spirit of a sad girl. I like the song because of its soothing melody and message. Every time that I hear this song, I can’t help but sing along and wave my hands up in the sky. This song reminds me that there is always a way to surpass or overcome every challenge in our life, moreover, it is a song of hope and encouragement that says “keep holding on whenever life becomes tough.” In my own perspective, the song of this local band is awesome, it is plain and simple but the message that it conveys will always strike in our heart and make us listen to it all over again. - Shania Ruby E. ADVANCEMENT OF GENETIC ENGINEERING THROUGH GENE-DRIVE:

When should we set boundaries for scientific research? WORDS Chloie Angela Marie M. Isler ILLUSTRATION Kristine Faye V. Anajao

S

cientists are reaching the pinnacle of scientific development and this time, by experimenting on genes and the biology of living beings. According to Live Science, genetic engineering is the process of using technology to change the genetic makeup of an organism – be it a plant, an animal or bacterium. This process can be achieved through manually adding new DNA to an organism to add one or more traits that is not yet present in it. Since the first development of DNA recombinant technology in the early part of 1970s and the founding of the first genetic engineering company, “Genentech” in 1976, genetic engineering has continuously progressed throughout the following years. The advancement of genetic engineering has led to the development of vaccines, environment-friendly lithiumion batteries, and infection-resistant crops or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In 1982, after the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Genentech has produced the first “human” insulin. This resulted in the creation of the first genetically engineered human vaccine grown in a laboratory for hepatitis B in 1987. On the other hand, the revolutionary discovery of the CRISPR sequence in a bacterium genome allowed scientists to edit genes with precision. Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR) is a genome-editing tool that makes changes in the DNA. The emergence of this advanced gene-editing technology marked the birth of the controversial genetic engineering technique called “gene drive”, which makes sure that it is possible to pass down a modified trait from the present generation to its progeny, and so on. This breakthrough in science has the capacity to invent and intervene in ecosystems by fostering rapid extinction of any organism. So how does gene drive work? Kevin Esvelt, a biologist and assis-

tant professor in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), deduced that it is possible to permanently alter the genes of species by attaching a gene drive to a DNA sequence with CRISPR. This method allows the modified chromosome to copy itself in the successive generations of a particular organism. In order to drive species to extinction, they would just have to engineer a gene drive that makes all the offspring of that species be males. Through this technique, it would be possible to block a mosquito which carries malaria to pass down the infection in their offspring. Also, this could possibly be the solution to the spread of malaria. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), half of the earth’s population is at risk of malaria. In 2015, there were 212 million cases of malaria around the world with an estimated 429 000 deaths. Hence, scientists believe that if gene drive is effective to prevent the outbreak of malaria, it would also be feasible for other diseases transmitted through mosquitoes such as yellow fever, dengue and the Zika virus. Moreover, by releasing modified mosquitoes which cannot transmit avian malaria it can save endangered species of birds on Hawaiian Islands.

Advocates of the gene drive technology proposed that it can be an effective alternative to annihilate invasive species and reduce the demand for polluting pesticides. The use of gene drive, albeit propitious, still needs further research to avoid irreversible ecological consequences. “As a scientist who worked on it, I am particularly concerned because we scientists are ultimately morally responsible for all the consequences of our work. It should be a requirement that no one gets to build a gene drive or any technology designed to alter the shared environment in a laboratory without making their proposals public first,” Esvelt said at a panel discussion at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Gene drive’s capacity to reshape the relationship between humanity and the natural world is alarmingly favorable to human beings despite its possible detrimental consequences. Its environmental and ethical implications drive skeptics to think that this technology can also be used for powerful government’s malicious intents such as creating biological weapons that can easily exterminate even the human race.

JOURNEY TO THE RED PLANET: A lift off or no go? WORDS John Poliquit

W

e may be light years away from other Earth-like planets, but it won’t stop us from at least traveling to our neighbor’s pad. Mars is the fourth planet of the solar system, just past Earth. It is famously known as the Red Planet because of the presence of rusty iron in its soil, making it red. Its atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and argon. Like Earth, Mars has seasons, polar ice caps, volcanoes, canyons, and weather. Hence, over the last fifty years, scientists have studied this planet for a possibility of life. In 2015, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) presented evidences to support this possibility. NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington John Grunsfeld said in the US News that “our quest on Mars has been to ‘follow the water,’ in our search for life in the universe, and now we have convincing science that validates what we’ve long suspected.” Moreover, he added that “this is a significant development, as it appears to confirm that water -- albeit briny -- is flowing today on the surface of Mars.” Still, skepticism shrouds the humans’ attempt to travel further into the corners of space. Mars One, a non-profit organization spearheaded by Dutch businessman Bas Lansdorp, ambitions the red

73 | O M E G A

planet as humanity’s next home planet. By the year 2032, a planned one-way expedition to Mars will be launched to start a permanent colony on the red planet. The trip would start with four astronauts on board the proposed Falcon 9 rocket. It will take at least 3 years to reach its destination across the vast distance of space. If successful, this trip would be known by space-enthusiasts as another giant leap for humanity to step into the beyond. More than 100 members have been short-listed to take part in groups of four people (two men and two women), among them are two Filipinos, Minerva Rañeses and Jaymee del Rosario. However, the steps to accomplish this are far from easy. Various missions are being put into place to ensure the mission’s success. In 2018, a lander would arrive to Mars to test equipment and tools that will be used in the program. This would also be accompanied by rovers that will be sent by 2020. Life support assets such as oxygen, water and food supplies are planned for launch before the first humans arrive on the planet. Mars One currently focuses on its funding and research to support the mission. As of December 2016, 6 million euros (€) worth of investments from worldwide stocks and bonds are declared for the purpose of the mission. Despite the promise of achiev-

ing a new planetary home, various scientists have criticized on the feasibility and negative consequences of Mars One lifting off. According to an October 2014 study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the current timetable is considered too early to accomplish such a task of establishing a colony in space. The current conditions of the red planet would make the astronauts there to live for only 68 days, dying possibly from starvation, suffocation, poisoning or incineration. Moreover, MIT also pointed out that the limited capacity of sending and storing oxygen and water, as well as the incapacity to reproduce food can all result to an early death sentence for the first humans to live there. On the other hand, the NASA is also on a journey of sending people to Mars by 2030s after years of rigorous study of the Red Planet through the use of orbiters, landers and rovers. Despite the woes lurking within the Mars One program, the potential of mankind’s technological advancement for space exploration and colonization is a tall but worth taking for the people who dare to go further. As the little red planet in the galaxy can be within our reach, one can say that it may seem so close, yet still so far.

Modernizing Competitive Gaming through eSports WORDS Francis Felix C. Falgui ILLUSTRATION Jonan B. Paule

nline gaming is the ideal past time for many Filipinos, especially among the youth who go to computer shops with their friends and play different computer games. In this age however, online gamers have the opportunity to make a livelihood out of their hobby by competing in eSports. Electronic Sports (eSports) is the professional league for competitive video gaming. The Conversation, an independent media outlet from Australia, says that online games have become mainstream as eSports has over 113 million hardcore fans worldwide and about 147 million viewership thanks to Twitch, a video streaming website. Global revenues reached to US $252M and a combined prize pool of $71 million for all tournaments and competitions. According to the Belfast Telegraph, a daily newspaper in Northern Ireland, the accessibility of eSports made it popular. Anyone with a PC, console, or other

gaming platforms can join different eSport competitions. The newsletter also said that eSports has a competitive market. It gives players many games to choose from unlike other sports where players are limited by a set of rules, physical requirements, and equipment. Video game developers made games more accessible and affordable by creating free online games to attract new players – utilizing a gameplay that is easy to understand, making it enjoyable and easy to pick up for beginners. However, the strategic component of games is hard to master. This level of depth is interesting enough for gamers to stay and keep on playing. Belfast Telegraph pointed out that playing online games gives you a wide range of opponents that varies in age, nationality, and abilities. It is another experience that people cannot have in other sports. Front-runners of the industry grew by their prize money,

the number of players they have, and the number of tournaments they hold. These top five games for example: Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA2) has a $92,263,848.21 prize pool. Around 1,718 people play the game and they can participate in 668 tournaments. This is followed by League of Legends (LoL) with over $36,938,615.23 worth of prize money. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive also made a mark in the competitive scene with $26,862,371.81 as its prize pool. Starcraft II ranked 4th with $21,313,640.78 and Counter Strike with a $10,765,812.78 prize pool. Lastly, Counter Strike has a $10,765,812.78, prize pool, 2587 players, and 572 tournaments. There are a lot of games that followed the aforementioned. They may have not stood out, but they are doing well on their own.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR GAMERS? eSports does not only give gamers out there to make a living out of their hobby, but it also improves their health. “Gamers can keep track of objects and its location better than most people,” says Foundry 10, an education focused research firm that recently studied gamers. “We observed a significant relation between gaming experience and response time on the location memory task. Furthermore, our results extend previous gaming research that suggests that individual differences in gaming experience

are correlated with the speed of recalling spatial information from long term memory,” said Tom Swanson, one of the study’s authors. Moreover, the American Psychological Association (APA) explained that video games enhance spatial navigation, memory, reasoning, and it serves as a coping mechanism which helps people to recover from failure due to its trial-and-error nature despite the violent theme of most games. “Gaming may be among the most efficient and effective means by which children and youth generate positive feelings,” APA said.

THE NEXT STEP OF ESPORTS So, what is the future of the multi-million industry? The competitive gaming industry may be prosperous now, but it’s not done yet from reaching its pinnacle since it is tied to the ever-growing technology. However, the way eSports will grow is still unknown. According to Michal Blicharz, the current czar of the Electronic Sports League, “We don’t know because we don’t know where the medium is going to go.” It is due to the fact that Blicharz claimed that eSports depend upon the most popular games of today, which is subjected to change in the future. Video games can only

75 | O M E G A

be popular in a couple of years before it is replaced by a better game, and the same goes for the genre of video games. That is what makes eSports unpredictable. George Woo, the event marketing manager who heads the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship, said that, “I can’t tell you which game is going to be the game in the next five years,” Another aspect that determines the future of eSports is the technology that will operate the industry. Similar to video games, devices like controllers and computers are subject to change through the time along witha the preference of players. Virtual reality (VR) is

gaining fame lately, and with enough innovative development and progress, it is possible for VR to be used in eSports competitions in the future. Woo also claimed that touchscreen gaming is among those that are undergoing change. “We are still trying to crack the nut on mobile gaming [in order to make it more competitive like PC, and console gaming],” he said. Within a short period of time, online gaming has evolved from a typical hobby to one of the newest and hottest sport today. The only direction this sport will go into is forward, though it is uncertain if it will stay in the trend or go tasteless after some time.

INTERNET as an avenue of Propaganda WORDS Timothy Gerard P. Gucilatar ILLUSTRATION Jonan B. Paule

P

ropaganda strategies have advanced to exploit the public utilization of social media. Threats such as the spread of fake news and a financed network of dummy accounts have swayed public opinion in critical sociopolitical issues globally. On September last year, Senator Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV filed Senate Resolution 173 for the “proper education and development of responsible social media use in schools.” The resolution recognizes that social media is different since the content circulated online can be produced by anyone. Thus, no authority or expert can confirm the truthfulness, accuracy, and quality of the stories posted online. It adds, “In the Philippines, this unfortunate phenomenon was observed widely during and following the recent national elections.” Unlike news agencies where journalists operate, the freedom to access information and freedom of speech that the 1987 constitution guarantees is not regulated online. Netizens can express themselves and say what they want without the requirement for a certain level of education and literacy, nor are they mandated to be accurate and research thoroughly. “(...) everyone can produce or find information consistent with their own belief system. An environment full of unchecked information maximizes the tendency to select content by con-

firmation bias,” Walter Quattrociocchi wrote on World Economic Forum. Quattrociocchi’s study on the phenomenon of online misinformation was used for the latest Global Risks Report. He said that the rising problems in Facebook are conspiracy theories and trolling. Trolls are individuals who use parodies to engage in public discussions. “Trolls’ activities range from controversial and satirical content to the fabrication of purely fictitious statements, heavily unrealistic and sarcastic.” “What makes their activity so interesting is that, quite often, these jokes go viral and end up used as evidence in online debates from political activists,” he added. It was only until December 2016 when the fake news reporting option was noticed by Facebook users. The feature was added since January 2015. The recent 2016 US presidential elections was one of those affected by fake news. According to Buzzfeed.com, the stories about ‘Clinton sold weapons to ISIS’ and a hoax about ‘Pope endorsed Trump’ was two of those that trended in Facebook. The social media platform had been receiving criticisms on its hoaxladen newsfeed. However, the management retorted, “Of all the content on Facebook, more than 99% of what people see is authentic. Only a very

small amount is fake news and hoaxes. The hoaxes that do exist are not limited to one partisan view, or even to politics.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post. He thought of ways to combat the increasing problem of fake news in Facebook by teaming up with fact-checkers. Groups like ABC News, FactCheck.org, the Associated Press, Snopes, and Politifact will administrate and verify the legitimacy of each content in social media. These fact-checkers will attach a ‘disputed’ label on reported false news stories. “Disputed” posts will not disappear from a user’s newsfeed and can still be shared by other users. However, they will receive a warning that the post is a “disputed” story. Disputed stories will appear below the newsfeed and will not be turned into ads and promoted. Spoof pages that pretend to be real news organizations will be targeted as well. In the Philippines, Rappler CEO Maria Ressa went in-depth on President Rodrigo Duterte’s digital campaign. In a series of analyses on the misinformation phenomenon, Ressa dug deep on the campaign operated by bots and people using a fake online identity. The online news agency’s credibility has been the focal point of offensives against the media.

O M E G A | 76

Moreover, the Philippine media is virulently accused of being “dilawan,” a word attributed to supporters of the Liberal Party and those who have dissenting opinions against the Duterte administration. Take for example the Philippine Daily Inquirer who manages the “Kill List,” a online chart containing statistics and identities of people killed in the administration’s War on Drugs. Nic Gabunada, social media manager of Duterte during his campaign, revealed that since they do not have enough money, they had to be creative. Volunteers hyped the campaign and influenced people on social media by exploiting the trends on the internet. These trends span from the issues that Duterte had faced or the results of surveys. “When we want certain things to trend on Twitter, we have our Twitter warriors who post like anything or keep the same post just to have a quick trend.” Gabunada said. In a Rappler interview, he said he built the network in social media with P10 million and up to 500

77 | O M E G A

volunteers, who tapped their own networks. Each volunteer gathered their own number of followers to work for the campaign until it eventually grew larger. Keyboard warriors have the freedom to create their own content as long as they stick to the prescribed message. This massive misinformation campaign still continues to counterattack the dissenters. It has resulted in hate mongering amongst Filipinos and has deeply polarized public discourse. Duterte supporters have become condescending and refused to question the activities of the administration. The dissenting side on the other hand struggle against threats and the gullibility of people. But how can we solve this problem? The media should consistently be a legitimate source of information to maintain its credibility. Doing this will eventually make people realize the importance of verified and accurate news. Both the media and the citizens should not fear inquiry and communicate moral grievances to the

government. But if the citizenry is firm in absorbing the thoughts that the likes of known bloggers wish to provoke, then all efforts against misinformation is futile. The freedom of speech and expression is inviolable, but it takes social awareness and political consciousness to practice it without succumbing to conspiracy theories and baseless claims.

“People interested in a conspiracy theory are likely to become more involved in the conversation when exposed to “debunking”. In other words, the more the exposure to contrasting information a person is given, the more it reinforces their consumption pattern.” Walter Quattrociocchi wrote.

Disease Outbreaks 2016 Worldwide WORDS Maverick Matibag ILLUSTRATIONS Jonan B. Paule and Kristine Faye V. Anajao

Rural areas are particularly vulnerable to spread of epidemic diseases due to lack of awareness. These diseases can affect through several ways such as person-to-person contact or interaction with animals. The World Health Organization (WHO) recorded outbreaks that occurred from different countries last year. Here are some of them:

CHIKUNGUNYA Chikungunya is a disease transmitted by a mosquito called as the Asian tiger mosquito or Aedes albopictus. This illness is much like dengue. Last year, Chikungunya hit Argentina, USA, Kenya, and the Philippines. The outbreak was controlled through public health response, eradication of mosquitoes in the affected areas, epidemiological surveillance, and

raising the public’s awareness in the particular disease. Symptoms included fever, muscle or joint pain, and skin rashes. There were 400 cases recorded with Chikungunya which affected Indang, Cavite along with other parts of CALABARZON.

DENGUE FEVER

Caused by a yellow fever mosquito or Aedes aegypti, dengue is transmitted to people by mosquitoes found in hot countries. This disease includes high fever, skin rashes, dehydration, and muscle and joint pains. The virus contains four types of Dengue fever. The first outbreak of Dengue fever in history was first recorded in the Philippines and Thailand in 1950’s. But today, disease-carrying mosquitoes are affecting some

parts of the US and South America. Last year, the illness attacked the country of Uruguay and Burkina Faso City in Ouagadougou. Ensuring vector control was implemented to control the rising numbers of epidemic cases in Uruguay. On January 2016, The Philippines reported 52, 177 dengue fever cases. Luzon was gravely under attack of the disease with 372 deaths. Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitos can spread both Chikungunya and dengue.

This is a zoonotic viral disease transferrable by bites and fluids from an ape. According to the World Health Organizations (WHO), Central African Republic was inflicted, resulting in 26 cases on the last two quarters of 2016. The disease can

RIFT VALLEY FEVER (RVF)

Another viral disease carried by mosquitoes, RVF is a fevercausing disease that originated from native animals. The virus can be acquired through human-to-human interaction. An outbreak occurred in the region of Tahoua and other zones in Niger, Africa where there were severe cases of RVF documented last year . In the spiking number of RVF cases last August 2016, the Minis-

tries of Health and World Health Organizations (WHO) worked together with other groups to aid the country of Niger and its provinces where the widespread disease was worst. According to WHO, there were a total of 64 cases and 23 deaths of RVF reported in Tchintabaraden health district in Tahoua region. They were mostly 62.5% of male individuals who is involved in the profession of farming and animal breeding.

spread from person-toperson interaction. It can be treated by basic medications when the first sign of symptom show like fever, cough, or body pains. A smallpox vaccination can help fight the virus but, if it becomes severe, you are required to take immunoglobulins or antiviral medicines.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus (MERS-CoV)

MERS-CoV is a viral respiratory illness caused by a novel human coronavirus – a special type of virus that can avoid the immune system of the host. In 2016, the virus spread throughout Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar. From August to September of the same year, Thailand, Austria, and Australia also struggled against the virus. MERS-CoV cannot be transmitted through human-to-human contact, but

there were records a few years back that the disease came from camels around the desert states. Up until now, there are still no vaccines or medications to mitigate the threat of MERS-CoV. The only prevention is to make sure to hygiene after interacting with camels and other domestic animals. Hospitals in the said countries isolated the patients to prevent the spread and lessen the rising cases of the disease. Moreover, domestic airports in the states of Middle East strengthen their security using a technology that could detect those carriers. The infected people were to sent to the quarantine and was not allowed to migrate to other countries.

ZIKA VIRUS INFECTION

Perhaps the disease that garnered international attention last year, the Zika virus is another mosquitotransmitted disease that can infect pregnant mothers and cause microcephaly. Microcephaly shrinks a baby’s head which will cause the brain to be underdeveloped. Another rare condition this virus can cause is the Guillain-Barré syndrome that can cause temporary paralysis. Zika virus surfaced last year in South America, France, Netherlands, Maldives, and Papua New Guin-

ea. 500,000 cases were reported in Brazil at the height of the Rio Olympics. In an article written by The Guardian, there were an estimated of 466,815 cases of Zika Virus around 2015-2016 that mostly occurred in South America. No cure was released yet but the health sectors and hospitals recommend Zika patients to drink plenty of fluids, get enough rest, and medical consultation in their designated health centers. The public were encouraged too to clean their surroundings to prevent mosquitoes on settling in their area.

verybody knows that nothing is permanent except for change so, of course, everybody is a subject to it. Nowadays, Filipinos have been around enough to absorb different cultures, be it from the Westerns or our neighboring countries in Asia. Typically, Filipinas are known as a bunch of Maria Clara – modest, demure, and graceful; however, out with old and in with the new. Our Filipinas are now acclimating to the new and innovative age. Good bye to Maria Clara and hello to Marie Claire. Over the years, Filipinas have gained a lot of rights that were not enjoyed by their ancestors. They can now vote and even run for a position or work in the government. Filipinas today are also capable of inheriting and running a family property. Women in the 21st century have acquired equal power to men. No more weak and puny ladies; Filipinas today are known to be strongwilled and stubborn (in a good way, of course). In this age, it is common to see women working on jobs that are usually meant for men like wield-

ing and engineering. You may doubt their capabilities, but once you see these hardworking Filipinas, you will be in awe. Their tenderness and grace tend to affect the output of their work. Better expect a high quality product. Maria Clara? More like, Marie Claire. Filipinas’ style and fashion are also subjects to westernization. Gone are the days of long sayas and kimono; these days, we have crop tops, denim shorts, and bull caps. Lipstick on point! Kilay on fleek! Make up is now a huge trend among Filipinas – it helps boost their confidence. Others might say that they dress up nicely or put on pretty make ups to impress men, but no! Filipinas spend hours on their eyebrows so they could look amazing for themselves. When it comes to dating, Filipinas still like to be wooed and pursued by their suitors. This is not the age of haranas and sibak kahoy, but honestly, who doesn’t love to hear romantic songs and receive handwritten letters and poetries? Some even do it millennial style. Usually, it is taboo for a girl to court a guy. Yet it is no longer an issue when women initiate the first move.

As what most people have said: all it takes is a little bit of courage. Classic Filipinas were known to have a passionate heart for their family. They still retain their caring and nurturing character, though Marie Claire cries “Chores Me Not!” it is sad that most of the women today don’t even know how to cook or do household chores. Before marrying, instead of learning how to do chores, they tend to spend more time focusing on their jobs and earning. Well, it is also for the future of their families. Filipinas indeed evolved over time. No more the shy, awkward and oppressed Maria Clara because modern Filipinas are now fearless, confident and free. They are now shifting from a voiceless house displays to someone who is not afraid to speak of their minds and refute negative expectations of them. We may be far from the traditional Maria Clara, but we still possess her good values. We still prefer to maintain the values passed on by their great grandmother – we just need a little change.

WHY #ADULTING SCARES US?

WORDS Ma Danna R. Tansiongco ILLUSTRATIONS Hygeian R. Español and Leander Keithric P. Gaffud

ave you ever played bahaybahayan with your friends outH doors and pretend cooking, wash-

ing the dishes or doing the laundry? How about mimicking your dad drinking liquor or smoking or wondering why you should sleep during the afternoon? These kinds of moments may be in some distant past. But nowadays, the tables have turned. We would rather see ourselves dive into a sea of balls or ride on a seesaw in the playground. But since we love to go back as kids, it’s a hard truth that we must go back and face the real world of adulthood. Truthfully, reaching the age of adulthood scares us the most – and we have our own reasons why. For people trying to figure out their lives and dreaming about ‘getting old’ or ‘being an adult’, it must be stressful. They get caught up with what they should be doing with their life, even though it is not necessarily the right time. But as an adult, it’s the complete opposite. For us, trying to understand what is the right thing to do can be a monumental task. People will always remind us to be responsible, and responsibilities always bring fear to anyone. Thoughts like, “What exactly is responsibility? Can I do it?

83 | O M E G A

Do I really need to do it?” will cloud your mind and you will tend to forget that the opposite of fear is freedom. The future is scary. It is hard to tell what will happen the day after tomorrow. Things never usually go as planned or how you imagined it. There’s so much to think about. After college, we are all going to be in #Adulting level. All of us will enter the real world, wherein we would be expected to buy a house and lot, get married and have children. In the long run, we would be exhausted in the endless cycles of our lives: going to our jobs every morning and staying late every night to get a big project done at work while everybody else has already left before 5:00pm, investing our time in the gym, paying our own loans and taxes, processing our own documents, scheduling our own vacation, purchasing groceries and cooking for ourselves. Adulthood or adult-ing is all about growing up, but never about losing in touch with your silly, happy child side. Pay your bills, but build a fort. Be accountable, but make snow angels. Say you’re sorry, but believe in magic. Create the moments to let go, play, giggle, joke, dance like you’re a pre-school student. Make believe, pretend,

dream big, and laugh until you almost pee in your pants. Balance is where it’s at. If you choose to be like those who are miserable, then it’s no fun being an adult. You won’t want to have anything to do with adulting. It’s easy to get distracted and be off track, but it’s important to keep in line with your vision. If what you’re doing is stressing you over or pulling you away from your goals, then you need to stop for a while, take a deep breath, and refocus. Set some goals, get excited, and then beat the hell out of them! You better start figuring out what you’re going to do with yourself, with your time, and how you are going to create your magical life. Nothing cosmic will be sprinkled on you, where you will wake up and find that all of your hopes and dreams have come true. You can’t be lazy and take passive approach in rocking days and build yourself the most epic life possible. It all boils down to this: you’re either in love with your life or you are tolerating it. Everyone on earth lives for a purpose. Each purpose should be worked on with passion and grace. Whatever the process is, run your life and it will run for you, too.

What Would the Greeks Say to the Millennials? WORDS Tammy Cattleya B. Delos Reyes ILLUSTRATIONS Leander Keithric P. Gaffud

reek philosophers have contributed in the world by replacing mythical explanations with logical ones. It’s because they have played a big part in different fields such as Mathematics, Biology, Astronomy, or anything under the sun and beyond – all of which are still useful in the present. Millennials live in a fast paced world wherein deeper understanding of oneself is only second to the list of priorities. Whether it is the ancient Greek philosophers or millennials, finding happiness is a life-pursuit. But, have you ever wondered what the Greeks would say to the millennials on how to achieve ‘eudemonia’, Greek word that is literally translated as ‘happiness’?

than their needs. Hence, Epicurus tells us to be contented on the things we have. It is human nature to want more, however happiness can never be found with a greedy heart. Contentment brings happiness. Accept that some desires cannot be fulfilled easily; it needs hard work and patience. Be contented without slacking off. Epicurus was a known philosopher during the Hellenistic period. He believed that in order to attain happiness, courage and moderation is necessary.

not let it depend on the happiness of others. Aristotle is famous for rejecting Plato’s theory of forms, despite him being his very own teacher.

“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”- Aristotle

In today’s generation, many people seem to depend on others than themselves. The mood our friends or family have can be contagious. However, being happy is still your decision. Do not give others the power to control that aspect in your life. The choices you make and its respective consequences are solely yours. Tell yourself: “I decided to be happy”. You don’t always need a reason to be happy. Decide and choose it every day, be happy and do

The millennials have this attitude of making things complicated even if it isn’t. For example, we put color unto things leads to overthinking which results to sleepless nights, precipitating your never ending 2 AM thoughts. One’s interpretation of things is based on his perception. But sometimes, you don’t need to complicate things. You see it as it is; so, get some sleep. Anaxagoras is known for his theory that everything contains a portion of everything else in the physical world.

This generation is negatively categorized as the group of lazy narcissistic teens because of technology. However, you must dream big but work harder to reach it and achieving dreams and aspirations in life demands time and effort. No one wakes up with a diploma in hand; it is the payoff for hard work and late night studying. The natural order of things is to aim and do. The desire to achieve the goal must be

greater than procrastination. If you just slack off, then you can’t reach your target. Little is known of Heraclitus, but he is believed to be selftaught. He was called the “weeping philosopher”.

‘’Avoid doing what you would blame others for doing.’’ - Thales

It is similar to the golden rule, right? The ethic of reciprocity aims to teach on treating others how you want to be treated. It came with a twist though – blame. The blaming game tends to look for external factors why

bad things happen. The millennials are known for this – refusing to admit mistakes, hard to accept what happened, and many more. That’s why, more problems tend to rise than those solved. Thales is regarded as the first scientist in history. He changed people’s belief from superstitions to science. It seems that we still can learn from the Greek philosophers that lived thousands of years ago. Their life lessons are still relevant today. During the old days and the present times, achieving happiness has been a life pursuit. Remember that happiness can only be found within you.

– this is a catch phrase that almost every millennial has heard and from that, it is nearly inevitable not to associate the word ‘technology’ with the term ‘millennial’. Typically, the term ‘millennial’ refers to the ‘Generation Y’ – those people who were born in the early eighties, mid-nineties, and early 2000s. On the other hand, the millennials’ parents — or probably grandparents — belong to the Generation X, whose birth years typically range from the early-to-mid sixties

to the late seventies or early eighties. Gen Y is the biggest age group since the time of the Baby Boomers. They are also known as the ‘Echo Boomers’ for the very reason that they are the genetic offspring of their parents, a baby boomer. On the negative side, they are considered as lazy, narcissistic, materialistic, and/or anti-socials who can’t function definitely without a smartphone or those who still can’t accept adult responsibilities. Yet in real life situations, Gen Y are passionate, ethical, and trustworthy in doing business or building and organization.

Moreover, the millennials are also called the ‘Generation Me’ because of their creativity, flexibility, open-mindedness, strong sense of social responsibility and concern for the environment. Going back, ‘kaka-computer at kaka-cellphone mo’ typically meant that you have completed something that should be done — and failed miserably. It could either be due to the fact that you have no idea how to do it, or you simply got distracted by other factors, which is mainly your gadget and the Internet. It’s no secret that most Gen X do not think highly of the Millennials, because apparently, the latter cannot do much, especially without the help of modern technology. Compared to their generation where people are apparently more driven, more competitive and are actual social beings, the Gen Y are the opposite. With the accompaniment of the modern innovations, everything’s just one click away. On the other hand, millennials would argue that as time progresses, so does the technology and the people. After all, it was the Gen X that thrived hard to adapt the ide-

as of innovation and the millennials are benefitting from it as they should, so will the next generations to come. The problem of today’s youth is that they forgot to work harder and fulfill their task on time because of modern technology. Most teens nowadays rely more on internet sites like Google and Wikipedia as their reference instead of reading books. Maybe because it is easier for them to access and it’s more sustainable. But, is it really true that these millennials are too lazy or are they just misunderstood by others, especially the older ones? Well, a second year Journalism student Patricia Samin believes that the millennials are just misunderstood by many. “Millennials were dubbed lazy kasi in one click nagagawa na nila lahat. Like book a taxi, order something online, etc. But to be honest, millennials are not lazy. Siguro kasi they adapted automatic living na kaya ayun sanay sa instantaneous results,” Samin said. While Isabelle Dominguez, a fourth year Multimedia Arts student, agreed that the millennials

are really lazy. “I think some millennials are lazy talaga because of technology kasi parang ang nangyayari yung paggamit ng technology parang reward system na sa kanila,” she said. “Kumbaga the more na nakikita nila na may nagla-like ng post nila or may nakikita silang post na maganda o nakakatawa, nasa-satisfy sila,” Dominguez emphasized. Hence, the discourse between the Gen X and Gen Y will never end because they would still blame each other when it comes to the modern technology as a result of laziness. Perhaps, we can’t rewind the history of our old generation, but it is not too late to bring it up for once, right? It is like appreciating those memorabilia you’ve kept for a long time. The only way is to accept our past, embrace our present and prepare ourselves for what the future holds.

JUAN TAMAD’S GUIDE TO GOOD STUDY HABITS WORDS Jaenelle M. Ilagan ILLUSTRATION Hygeian R. Español and Leander Keith P. Gaffud

ave some papers due the next day but slacking off instead? Then you’re stuck with a bad habit! Laziness is the most common bad trait that students can’t overcome. School works, projects and assignments are always left undone until the last day, resulting to late output or nothing to pass at all. This is one of the reasons why students have bad performance in class. Here’s a few tips on how to overcome your laziness: 1. Know your priorities. List all your school works, assignments, projects, and quizzes within the week. Sort it from the most important to the least. 2. Eat, Sleep and Relax. Manage your time wisely, even your sleeping and eating periods are included. Remember to take a proper nap, listen to calming music, and eat comfort food for your health. With these, you can focus on studying and reviewing. 3. Be optimistic. Good vision really matters when it comes to developing good study habits. Exhale all the bad vibes and inhale all the good vibes. Always think of the brighter future ahead of you. 4. Talk to yourself. Communicate with yourself; always say ‘just do whatever it takes,’ ‘fighting,’ ‘review for a cause,’ ‘do not procrastinate,’ and ‘passing grades are gold.’ It’s okay to look crazy rather than to be called lazy. Everyone can motivate you but remember that everything is still up to you. Push! 5. Be a good listener. Jot down the important notes your professor says. A friendly reminder: just take note of the key words in

order to remember it easily. If you can’t write it down fast, then better listen carefully. Remember the lectures of your professor and always be attentive. 6. Don’t panic. Stay calm and breathe. Do your papers one at a time. Yes, cramming works, but not all the time. You might gain more stress if you try to do everything at the same time, and most likely, you’ll leave everything unfinished. Relax! 7. Plan ahead. To reduce cramming, make sure you plan your every day routine. For example, if your professor gave you a reflection paper due next meeting, do it ahead of time. You never know if tomorrow another task will be given.

8. Inspire. You can easily find your inspiration, but you must also learn how you can motivate others. Read books, do advance readings and be responsible all the time. Aside from this, you must never lose hope and always believe in yourself. Be a role model, an inspiration to other people. Being a responsible college student is harder than you think. Some would say that grades measure your intelligence but skills and abilities will show how capable you are. Moreover, decision making, accepting failures, fighting difficulties, and disappointments are always part of college life. Walk on the right path; don’t wait until the guava falls but continue reaching success for your brighter future.

#WALANGFOREVER: ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END WORDS Marielle Justine M. Escabarte PHOTOS Google Images

I

n this life, everything will come to an end – a sweet relationship, though we may want to keep it, will need to break; even your favorite TV series, however good it is, has its final episode. The truth is everything in this world is temporary. As Totó once said, “the only permanent thing in this world is change”. Yet, these changes happen for a reason — a good reason to look up for. Let’s take this from those trending endings happened from 2015 to 2016.

2NE1 has come to an end

Farewell, Kamikazee

Filipino rock band Kamikazee reached the end for new beginnings. After 15 years in the music industry, Kamikazee announced their breakup through a video posted on their Facebook page before their farewell concert “Huling Sayaw”. They bid goodbye last January 25, 2015. The band has decided to split because they want to focus on something more important for them – FAMILY. In addition, they also want to try different things like focusing on business ventures and individual crafts. Kamikazee was formed in 2000 with members Bords Burdeos, Led Tuyay, Jomal Linao, Puto Asete and Jay Contreras. They were the people behind the hits “Narda”, “Chiksilog”, and “Martyr Nyebera”.

A heartbreaking news for KPOP Fanatics: after seven years of worldwide popularity, the iconic k-pop girl group 2NE1 is officially disbanded. Composed by CL, Sandara Park, Park Bom and Minzy, they were behind the trending hits such as “I Am the Best”, “Fire”, and “I Don’t Care”. In April 2, 2016, 2NE1’s youngest member Minzy officially exited the group. This was followed by YG Entertainment’s announcement last November 25, 2016 that they decided to disband 2NE1 since their exclusive contract already expired last May 2016. On January 21, the group released their final song entitled “Goodbye”. It was written by CL as a letter for Minzy. However, it turned out that it was their last medium to properly bid goodbye to their fans after the abrupt disbandment. From their successful concerts and phenomenal hits, the legendary girl group is now just a memory in the K-pop industry – another memory and music to be remembered forever.

One Direction’s alleged breakup

March 2016 marked the first year anniversary of 1D without Zayn Malik. With Malik’s departure from 1D in 2015, remaining members Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Harry Styles also decided to walk separate directions. One Direction have been together for five years and they were behind the hits “What Makes You Beautiful”, “Best Song Ever” and “Steal My Girl”. Their fans were devastated when they found out that the British boy band postponed their tours for their fifth album and chose to focus more on their solo careers. There was no official announcement but there are speculations that the ‘extended hiatus’ of the group will lead to disbandment.

Up Dharma Down no more?

The OPM world was shaken as an article from One Music PH trended online saying that “Armi Millare bids ‘goodbye’ to Up Dharma Down”. Many fans were saddened about the news. The truth is, neither vocalist Millare nor the members of the alternative rock band are going anywhere. They just announced that they were saying goodbye with the name that made ‘Tadhana,’ ‘Oo,’ and ‘Indak’ famous. As they welcome the year 2017, they will no longer be performing under the name Up Dharma Down but will officially be UDD, the initials of the original name. It may seem be a goodbye but it is actually another beginning to the band’s new adventure.

BRANGELINA’s shocking split!

Aside from the loved bands, Hollywood’s powerful and hottest couple also ended their love story. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s split shocked the world, and went viral with memes, GIFs and tweets. Even celebrities shared their reactions on it. It was really a #WalangForever for Brad and Angelina. Many had thought that Brangelina will last forever. The couple was admired by many because they were a match made in heaven. Last September 15, Jolie filed a divorce from Pitt citing irreconcilable differences as the ground. The former couple has been together for twelve years, two years as husband and wife.

MY OWN RECIPE FOR DEALING WITH HEARTBREAK WORDS Chloie Angela Marie M. Isler ILLUSTRATION Hygeian R. Español and Jonan B. Paule

A

t some point in our lives, we are bound to experience heartbreak. It may be from a failed relationship wherein you invest too much of yourself but it’s still not enough for things to work out. It may also come from an unrequited love, giving all your heart and attention to a person who does not see your value. Or maybe, it’s falling in love with the right person at the wrong time and, no matter what you do, there will always be hindrances to prevent you from being with him like different priorities and current relationships. Remember, your life won’t hamper just because you’re in pain. The reason behind your heartbreak does not really matter because the most important thing is how you deal with it. Here are some of the things I did to deal with my own heartbreak.

WARNING: This will not help you move on because only you have the power to do that, but let my pain be your inspiration to move forward.

1. It is okay to cry if you miss him/her.

Crying is alright once in a while, but never make it a habit. Missing the person included in your dreams for the future is normal. Drunk calls confessing what your sober self cannot. Stalking his/her social media accounts and breaking down because he/she is moving forward, while you’re still stuck. Don’t you think that’s enough justification to move on?

3. Go out with your friends and family.

When I stopped hoping for something that may never happen, I saw how much I missed out on my friends and families. While I was breaking my heart loving him, I forgot the people who genuinely loves and cares for me. Don’t be like me, never take for granted those people that you know will stick to you through thick and thin.

2. Learn to forgive.

Forgiving is always the hardest part because it comes along with acceptance. It’s a torturous process. How can you forgive someone who shattered your heart and destroyed your innocence? It was when I forgive him for treating me like a replaceable object that I accepted the fact that we are not meant to be. Forgiveness will set you free from all the bitterness and hatred.

4. Focus on yourself.

Start investing in yourself. Do the things you were not able to do just because you want to please him. Slowly build yourself from the scratch. I know how hard this is because, while you’re with that person, your priority is never yourself, but what would make the person happy.

5. Keep yourself preoccupied

There are three things that kept me preoccupied: First, put your academics at the top of your priorities. This is one of the hardest thing to do when nursing a scarred heart. There was a time that while I was reading the Rise and Fall of Superpowers, I was crying my eyes out because his favourite song played on my playlist. But, I wiped my tears and engrossed myself in all my reading materials. And it’s worth it because I am able to maintain my position in the Dean’s List and my scholarship. Second, join various organizations and be active. In addition with my initial organization, I joined three more. Being in active organizations brought a lot of pressure to me that I don’t even have the time to cry because deadlines and responsibilities are lingering around. And third, start new hobbies because doing something new will stop you from relating every single thing in your life to him/her.

6. Turn your pain into art.

There’s always an inner artist in each and every one of us. It may be in the form of writing or visual arts. Make the pain your inspiration for your greatest masterpiece. I wrote countless of poems and proses about him and for him, until the pain in my heart became lighter. Trust me, there is healing in art.

7. Develop your spiritual strength.

Out of all the things I have mentioned, this is the most important ingredient — go to Church every Sunday, read the Bible, and help your spiritual relationship with the Lord grow. In my case, I started going to Feast Manila every Friday. I started to heal when I surrendered all the pain in my heart to God and, since then, I have learned the perfect definition of love. Only God can give us the unconditional love we need, for He is the perfect definition of love.

If your heart ached while reading this, then we’re on the same page. For a long time, I was stuck in a rut. I keep going in circles – moving on and going back to him. Until one day, I realized that this game is tiring and I am on the losing side. I fathomed that this is the right moment to let go of him because I cannot keep on stalling my life for something uncertain. Truth be told, I still love him but I no longer have it in me to fight for us because I know that I deserve better than to be an option. If you know the feeling is not mutual, then stop before it’s too late. Stop before you are already drowning from the hopes you have. Let go; stop putting that person on the pedestal and start to love yourself.

THE ABCs OF LGBT

WORDS Jerico P. Fania ILLUSTRATIONS Hygeian R. Español and Bea Patricia M. Pelayo

T

he clamor for LGBT rights has significantly doubled since the dawn of the digital age. Scholars and non-academic people alike are engaging in discourses about gender and sexuality both online and offline. But really now, what is LGBT? What does it have to do with gender and sexuality? Why are people arguing about these acronyms?

LGBT?

Are you ready to review your alphabet?

The letters in the acronyms stand for (L)esbian, (G)ay, (B) isexual, and (T)ransgender respectively. A more politically-correct and pedagogical variation of the acronyms actually has “QIA” in it but let’s save that for a later discussion. Now here’s where it gets tricky: “lesbian”, “gay”, and “bisexual” all denote sexual orientation while “transgender” refers to gender identity. The noun “lesbian” and “gay” refers to men and women who are sexually and romantically attracted to the same sex – lesbians to women while gays to men. However, “bisexual” denotes people who are attracted to both men and women; hence, they’re tagged as the jackof-all-trades. Kidding aside, bisexuality is one of the three main classifications of sexual orientation, together with homosexuality (same-sex attraction) and heterosexuality (attraction to the opposite sex). The term “transgender” is an adjective used to refer to people whose gender identities diverge from their assigned biological sex.

QUEER ME NOW

In an attempt to recognize the spectral nature of sexuality, people have tweaked the LGBT acronyms, enter the *drum roll* “QIA”. The “Q” stands for “queer”, a generic term used to refer to LGBT people or those who refuse to conform to gender binaries. “I” is for “intersex” or the general term for people born with an ambiguous sexual anatomy that does not conform to the typical definitions of male and female. Intersex is preferred, and more politicallycorrect, over the dated term hermaphrodite. The last letter “A” is shorthand for “asexual”, which refers to people who have zero sexual desires. Sounds a bit odd, but yeah, asexual people do exist. With all the letters identified, now you guys are knowing the difference.
