Schoo Middle School

Have you ever walked into class and wondered who sat in that seat before you got there? Maybe it was smudged with dirt. Maybe it smelled like good-smelling body spray. Is it your crush? Is it your best friend who writes notes and tapes them under the table for you? Is it someone you've never met before? Whatever the case, we decided to look at a pair of seats in Mr. Schwaninger's art room. Out of over 800 students, one thing that connects these 10 is the fact that they sit in the same spot at different points of the day.

UNdefined
From 2013-2016, the eighth graders have been in middle school at Schoo. When asking teachers about us, it was hard to define the class as a whole. There are so many unique personalities that makes 8th grade who we are. Soon we ' ll move on into high school, but still remember the memories. It's the end of the school year, but it's just the beginning. Be undefined!

RUNning the Course

This year s boys · and girls· cross country teams went through a lot of firsts this year. For example, this was the first year that there were meets at Seacreast Field by Lincoln East. There were some learning curves to conquer as rain and flooded out bridges made navigating the course difficult the first time. Also, this was the first time that the middle schools ran with the high schools at the LPS Championships at Pioneers Park.
·t think this year we had some leaders, both in boys a girls, 11 said Mrs. Wehner. 11 We had kids ho would run well at the meets and also push each other during practice.·
At the middle school city meet, the girls ran to a fourt place finish, while the boys ook home third place honors.

Mr. Thatcher felt that "our team showed a lot of improvement throughout the year. It was awesome to see kids who haven 't played soccer before become more confident as the season went on."

First year coach Mr. Heiser has been really happy with the season. "Our 7th and 8th graders all seemed to have some experience , which helped. And getting the 6th graders up to the gym means we'll be that much better next year."
At the deadline, Schoo only had competed in one meet with their wrestlers going 13-3 in matches forecasting a great year for Schoo wrestling.

Q&A with Miss Gilbert
How has the music program changed over the years since you've been at Schoo? More and more children are interested in the program and it's been growing ever since the start.
Why do you like teaching music?
I fell in love with music in middle school. My family outside my family (friends) also loved mus1c. My friends and my husband all did musicals and marching band with me. We did pop music, old music, and Broadway. Also, Mr. Harmon went to the same school as me and we were both in show choir.
department experienced a lot of new

nchanges. Learn in g how to say "Simodynes 11 and "Zumwalt 11 was challenging enough as it is. Mr. Harmon came down from the 7th grade pod to teach a section of music to 6th graders. Also, because of the rising interest in drama class, Schoo decided to create two drama sections. This allowed two different groups of students to put on two plays, one in the fall semester and one in the spring. All this contributed to a lot of excitement this year in the corner past the lunchroom.

Drama
This year, Schoo did not one, but two musical productions! With drama becoming more and more popular, there was a need to have a second production with the number of students interested. This fall, Schoo 8th graders put on a production of "Cinderella." Throughout the preparation, Miss Gilbert says once th.ey pick a ~lay and their roles, she has a lot of trust in her students, knowing they'll make it 'more terrific.' She loves the family that forms each semester as they all try to work harder to help each other perform at their best. For each performance, she still gets "super nervous when it comes time to play." But a few deep breaths later and she knows the play will be fantastic!
Orche str a
W ith M r.Jungck leaving, orchestra was taken over by two new teachers, Mr. Simodynes and Miss Zumwalt. Both are sa id to be having a great first year here at Schoo. Mr. Simodynes said that he thought the orchestra students "pe rformed beautifully" during the fall concerts. He's already looking forward to n ext year. He enjoys being able to pick songs (about 10-1~ to start with) that he thinks will blend well with the stude nts he has. Then, Mr. Sim odynes narrows it down to five that he has the students play.

Songs of Orchestra

-Band
Before Mr. Simodynes came to Schoo, he taught band in elementary schools around Lincoln. He says that he likes middle school band because they're actual classes where he gets to meet with the groups as a whole on a regular basis. He likes that middle schoolers are more established when they walk into the room. For his first year, Mr. Simodynes thinks this year has gone pretty smoothly and that the transition to middle school has been an enjoyable one.

Ofuoi·
Schoo are very different. We all have l likes, disl ik es, and crazy obsessions. Whether you are 13 or 73 , obsessions are a regular thing in life. Some can
be seen as normal. Some maybe not so much. But we own up to it and make it a part of who we are. Each obsession is true to yourself and here are some strange ones for your enjoyment.
What ' s your favorite animal? For Justin, he's infatuated with the "epicness" of turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you may ask? Nope, just turtles.
One th in g teachers try to prevent students from doing is playing online games. If you pay attention, you might see Kay playing "Five Nights at Freddy's."

Like many of our extracurr icular activities, Newspaper Club had two new sponsors th is year, Mrs. Tobey and Mr. Van Bibber. There are millions of problems throughout the world and practically everywhere you go you are guaranteed to find one. That is why we have Project Peace. Project Peace all ows students the opportunity to help make our · school, our community, and our world a better place. Sometimes the students in Project Peace can help the hungry or raise money to donate to raise awareness for a cause or to help find a cure for a d i sease. They cou l d even help out the places that are left damaged due to natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes. By doing these th in gs our students at Schoo make it their mission to make a change in the world for the better.

Student Counc il's goa l at Schoo is to teach students to become more aware of the problems in the community and have them think of ways that they could help fix these problems and do it in a fun way. Ka l en Levich, a partic i pant in Student Co uncil says , "I like the int eractive things we do in Student Counc il lik e when we walked around the Fallbrook neighborhood to collect cans for the food drive." Our students at Schoo thrive to learn about leaders hip and the environment around them by participating in Student Council.

Technology and computers are now a part of our every day lives. But instead of just playing an online game, why not make one? That's one of the draws to Computer Club. Sponsored by Mrs. Steiner, Computer Club has done activites like Scratch or Block coding to create different programs or activities. They also use some robots to practice coding and gain basic programming experience. If interested, most of the activities are on code.org.
According to 7th grader, Kilik S., "I think it's fun because I get to learn how to use robots and code with friends. Computer Club has made me more interested to learn about computers in the future."

whole new level, litera Schoo competed in Louder han a Born statewide competition made up of mostly school teams. In fact, Schoo is the on ly middle school that competed in 2016. They are coached by two great poets, Samuel Lee and Ke lsey Re ifert.
Most meetings consist of writing time, sharing poems and critiquing each other's work. Other times they will bring in random poetry for the fun of it and share it or just have their friends read it! For these students , poetry has been a great outlet for them to express themselves and become betterwritersatthe
same time.

Art Club is a club that has sought to inspire and has major objectives at times. But it's mainly a open studio for anyone to come in and work freely on their art. Artists meet up and socialize, or just work. Art Club is an opportunity for
those who are unable to get their hands on the right materials or for the kids who just want to create something new with their friends. Mr. Schwaninger is consistently impressed with their growth as artists. Those students who put in the time making their next masterpieces always seem to keep improving. New _ or old, the warm buzz of conversation and the judge-free zone makes Art Club a great environment for anyone to get better : no matter the skill level.

Ok, first off, we know it' s • "Irr ep lac eab le. " But if you think about it, a lot of us spend more time with our teachers than w ith our family at home. All the little quirks that you can pick up on. Like when Mr. Sw ift looks at his watch when we talk in his class. Or Mr. Orton 's "Oh My lant a! " saying. Or when Mrs. Adams asks, "Do you agree?" when you may or may not have been paying attent ion. Or Mr. Hix's "l AAl" rule. Or M i ss Anderson slapp in g her hands down on the table when she laughs. Or Mr. Schwaninger 's use of the word 'd ope. ' Or Coach Kavan say in g "Good morning, 11 even if it's 2:30 in the afternoon. Or Miss Yost's "Yost w ith the most!" say in g when she answers the phone. We know .--------.--~----. these things because they've become such a big part of our lives. Supporting us, challenging us, even if we don't understand it at first.
These are just some of the reasons our teachers are so "un"r ep lacable.

Let's talk about something that plays a part in our everyday lives. Motivation, drive, whatever you want to call it, its presence is there in our lives. It keep you going in a sports event or your ideas flowing when your writing. It gets you up in the morning and keeps you awake during class.
What do you do when motivation runs dry? It's a problem many face when they grow bored or uninterested in something they once took joy in doing. It can happen in class, at home, or any place really. But when you notice this lack of drive, you know it's gone.
This isn't something good for the person affected, if anything they become unproductive, bored, and wanting to get out of the mood. ere are many ways to feel your motivation e back, but it is different for each person.
