English was one of the most important classes for every student to participate in at North Star. English was a truly unique class because it provided a personal aspect that many of the other classes did not offer. "English is the best class for students to open up about their personal life. English class is freeing. You cannot open up about things going on at home in a math or science class, but an English class allows you to do just that. You can express yourself through writing," said Johnny Hower. Hower's favorite topic to teach in English 9D was Romeo and Juliet. "I enjoy teaching Romeo and Juliet because I get to wear my Juliet costume I pull off a dress better than most men," said Hower.

In every English class students wrote essays to help improve their writing. One of the most challenging things for students was getting started with their essay while looking at their blank piece of paper . "When I am getting started I think of the prompt and what stance I have on that prompt. Then I attempt to put my thoughts into words," said senior Nate Pierce. "I tell my students to start with what they are familiar with and to use their emotions. I suggest they use past experiences that have impacted them emotionally to help promote ideas of where they can start their writing," said Johnny Hower. Many students found that writing about important events in their life helped them get started towards generating other ideas for their essays.

Students at North Star were really excited about their English classes. Great teachers, interesting books, and creative writings prompts he lped contribute to the popularity of English classes. "I really enjoyed having Mrs. Maddux as my teacher Secondly, I liked the fact that you get to use your own creativity in writing," said junior Julia Fomenko. Many students used English to talk about their future plans in life. "I like writing about my goals and what I want to do with my life," said sophomore Brandon Mai. English truly was a place for students to open up about their personal lives.

A wide array of English classes were offered to students at North Star ranging from Reading Ideas and Writing Essentials to Literature Through Film. Many of these classes were taught specifically to improve reading and writing skills including classes like English 10D, ~mposition, and Reading Elements.

Every English class at North Star helped students improve as writers and readers and also helped them become more prepared for college. "I've taken rigorous English courses in my four years which has drastically improved my writing, especially my grammar. I mainly give thanks to the teachers and the writing techniques they taught me. Because of these rigorous English classes, I can clearly differentiate between excellent writing and poor writing using the tips and tricks I learned from North Star teachers," said senior Ibrahim Alnajem.

When first beginning an essay, students often stared "at the blank page before 11 them attempting to think of what to write. In "Unwritten, 11 Bedingfield states that 11 no one else, can speak the words on your lips. 11 In English class, no one else could have written a student's story. It was told from his/her perspective and no one else's.

In the song, Bedingfield continues, singing 11 drench yourself in words unspoken." Students excelled with their essays when they allowed themselves to think creatively. Students were able to write about their experiences in English. The student's stories were then able to be share them with peers and teachers.

However, many of the student's other stories remained "Unwritten. 11

In .the English Language Leamer (ELL) classes, the students worked hard to develop their English writing/ reading skills to be as skilled in English as their native language. With many countries represented in ELL, there were languages from all around the world spoken in the ELL classrooms. Some students were talented enough to have had the opportunity to have had similar educational • experiences before coming to the United States. Freshman Mumtaz Blaseeni was becoming fluent in his fourth language. Originally from Iraq, Blaseeni moved to Turkey around the age of 11 and was in a progr~ similar to ELL. Blaseeni could communicate in four clifferent language: Kurdish, Turkish, Arabic, and English.

Many students like Blaseeni had quite the journey. Junior Aseel Al,Tameemi came to the United State from Iraq, and found many new hobbies. Her favorite new activity was recreational soccer. She said "I just really enjoy playing it today." Al ,Tameemi even jokingly said, "Oh yeah, one day I'll be playing pro."

Blaseeni also really enjoyed soccer, but his favorite new thing was the school system. "The schools. They are the nicest and really big," Blaseeni aid," Some schools I have went to in Turkey and Iraq didn't even have lunch" .

While the students had many more opportunities in their new school system, they also faced many new challenges and obstacles. Al,Tameemi thought the biggest challenge was that "I don't always know how to speak English, when I need to."

Once the students were able to overcome initial challenges, they were able to be successful in high school and go onto higher education. Al,Tameemi said that once she graduates from ELL and high school she wanted to go to college and then medical school so she could achieve her lifelong dream of being a doctor. She said "Without these classes, my dream of being a doctor wouldn't

"We Are The World"

Year: 2010

Just like the song "We Are the World", the English Language Learners classes embodied many different cultures and acknowledged that were are all a part of a great big family. The classes were full of students who each had different stories, much like the various artists who worked together to and made this one-of-a-kind song possible.

Measuring, cutting, and building were three of the main concepts high school students learned during their Industrial Technology classes. Building their way through the year while practicing using their power tools and tape measures, l,Tech classes at North Star offered students lessons they not only used in the classroom but could also use later in life. "I've always known how to deal with wood, but until this class I never really understood all the techniques of wood," said senior Jack Zigler. "Satisfaction after completing a project by myself is something I never thought I'd experience. l,Tech is definitely something everyone should experience to better their future," said Brody Foote(12). Students practiced all different kinds of concepts throughout the semester ,long classes. Some of the different choices of classes included, Introduction to Woods, Introduction to O)nstruction, Introduction to Engineering Design, Cad Architect, and Custom Woods.

Industrial Technology allowed students to show their creativity and have a unique outcome with each individual piece that was created. The skills were hands on skills that anybody could do, but they gradually become more complex over time. The classes themselves were ways they could express themselves and share ideas with one another. Jon Opfer (12) said, "Out of my four years at North Star, Intro to Woods' was one of the most interesting classes I've had."

It was hard to find something you could truly feel passionate about. However, in the Vocal Music program at North Star you could see many students shine a light on theµ- passion by joining one of the variety of choirs the school offered. During the 2015,2016 school year, North Star offered Men's and Women's Choir, OJncert Choir, . and Choreographed Choir.

Student in each choir found their voices and were able to put on a great show. Senior Maricarmen Figueroa said the reason she joined Choreographed and OJncert Choirs was because she'd always had a passion for singing since she was little and "I wanted to share my talent with others."

Although having to audition for OJncert and Choreographed Choirs could be rough, when students made the ensembles they found the process rewarding. "My favorite moments in choir, and in life in general," senior Ryane Needles said, "Are when I close my eyes and listen to a song that has finally come together, then opening my eyes and seeing my best friends next to me. Music is really powerful, especially when you get to create it with the people you love."

"I'm not good at singing but I love to do it, I look forward to Women's Choir everyday," Odaliz Sanchez said. Each student in vocal music put in a lot of hard work and effort this year, making their music perfection.

Science at North Star wasn't like any other subject that the students went through. It wasn't that class you went to and just sat, listened to lectures, and did bookwork. Science at North Star was what the school liked to think of as active. The teachers came up with many labs where the students got to learn the lessons through experiments. "Lab days" were the days each and every student looked forward to, almost as if they were the "Fridays" of the unit. These days consisted of getting out your chair, getting to work with new people, and enjoying your learning at a new level.

Suzanne Wilson agreed that Chemistry was an engaging class. "Chemistry is a blast because of all of the fun experiments the students get to be apart of. The kids get to do real science," said Suzanne. Chemistry was just one of the many choices of science at North Star. Throughout this course, a student would learn about many topics from the periodic table to the chemical reactions of specific liquids. It could be a challenging class, but for the better of the students' education.

"The most challenging moment of science for me was probably the elements unit of chemistry. I got through it though because I was forced to use

creativity to remember what I needed to know," said Nate Pierce.

Another course students nray have taken is Biology. Many found this class an interesting topic and often something they didn't come into school with much background on. Matt Wrenholt said, "My favorite topic to teach is genetics in Biology because some of the most interesting science right now is happening in that field." This can be seen through the fascinating chapters of this class such as organisms, genetics, and cell division.

During the usual day of Physics, Floyd Doughty never failed to make the students laugh with his fun facts and unique stories that he always had to share. "It's the little things that we are often amused by. For example, when he talks about what makes a good pencil sharpener for ten minutes, " said Derek Mikus. Physics was more than just understanding laws and motion through notes. There usually wasn't a week that the students didn't get to see something very interesting happen. The labs were nothing but fun, and Mr. Doughty designed them in a way that they would understand the concept in the modem world.

Floyd Doughty laughs at his joke he gave to the Physics class. He was showing the students how to use their journals.

The amount of helpful, creative work the Special Education students did was under ,appreciated by most people at North Star. Every day the special education students would split up and collect all recycling bins in all teacher plan centers, classrooms, and other rooms. They also helped wipe down the lunch room and kept the the school neat and tidy.

However, cleaning and helping out were not all that the special education students did; learning was the core of what went on with them. Doing jobs in the community around Lincoln it helped them learn the "life skills needed to be productive citizens" said Paula

Ryan, a Special Education teacher.

Special Education students also felt school pride. "I like to 1::x a Gator ,"said senior Miranda Wise. Many of the students enjoyed going to football games and even participated in them, includir Natalie Powers who was on the varsity cheer squad. Powers hel i cheer on the football team and chanted along with the rest of 1:- ~ r team. "I love to cheer at the football games," said Powers. The administration of North Star High School was filled with several new faces for the 2015, 2016 year. Changes included the addition of the new activities director, Kevin Simmerman, and the new assistant activities director, David Pauli. Both Simmerman and Pauli were very excited to become a part of North Star's community and its journey towards success. Although these changes affected North Star, they also had a positive impact on the new administrators' lives.

Simmerman came to North Star from Seward High School. He based his move off of the potential he saw in North Star students. Simmerman said, "Many people talked to me about the opportunity at North Star and they said that I would be a fool not to take it." Filling the spot came with big plans. Simmerman said, "I came here to be a part of the challenges in the school and to work towards improving them. I want to help the students be successful in everything they do, whether it be playing football, tennis, or taking part in the fall play. I really just want to make it about the students."

The job wasn't one that was the same every day. Each day was something new, and most were pretty long. "On a 'normal day' I am very busy, but it is always extremely rewarding. I enjoy getting to see all of the different sports and activities. Although it can be crazy at times, I get to go and watch students participate in games and activities for my job."

Switching jobs can be a struggle for some, but for Simmerman it was pretty smooth. He exclaimed, "It's been great. I absolutely

love it here! I just focus on athletics and activities instead of other tasks that I had to focus on at my previous school. The only negative that comes with more students in a school is that it is harder for me to personally get to know all of the students " Overall, the job was all good for Simmerman "I thoroughly enjoy what I do here."

Similarly, Pauli came to North Star from his previous job at Scottsbluff. His move was based on several things. "The location was convenient and I had heard a lot of good things about this school. I knew there were going to be many opportunities and of course Mr. Simmerman. "Upon his arrival to North Star, he planned to do a couple of things. Pauli said, "I want to help build a great culture here at North Star by working with Simmerman to give opportunities for students to achieve success. The only thing that has changed is everything new that I've learned like the software we use." The position Pauli filled wasn't too foreign to him. "It is very similar to my previous jobs," said Pauli.

Just like the majority of administrators at North Star, Pauli didn't have a concrete structured day. His spot in the administration team at North Star came with many individual tasks. "I am in charge of transportation, activity workers, academic support, and the evaluations of PE teachers." The job for him so far has been very satisfying. He said, "I have seen kids have chances to succeed, and I enjoy getting to know all of the kids and coaches."

Principal Vann Price leads the Gatorwalk for State Cross Country. Her excitement helped motivate athletes to do well at the big competition.
Karla Tinius gets bit by an alligator. Tinius prided herself on showing great school spirit while also having some fun at school.

They were there when you did not notice. They helped in every way that they could. The support staff in North Star made many improvements in students and in the school. The people who work as the staff in the school keep it running and support the students that are learning there. Support staff members worked in a wide array of tasks throughout the day. They played an important role in ensuring a supportive place to be. "I wanted to help students with any of their needs," said counselor Lori Ludwig. The staff built relationships and bonds with everyone around them. They connected with the students throughout the day, every day. Support staff at North Star had a lot of responsibilities around the school.

Campus Supervisors helped by looking out for students as well protecting the school. "Any time kids have a problem, they know that they can come to me for help," said Campus Supervisor Matt Lickliter. Nurses provided care when students needed it most. Janitors made the school's environment a safe and better place to be. (})unselors made every student feel wanted by encouraging them and trying to give all of the students a great opportunity in their lives. "I help by being a positive role model and having a positive attitude," said Eric Williams. They worked their whole lives to make a clifference for each student in the school.

Lori Ludwig loves working with a variety of students and their backgrounds. Ludwig helped with social, personal, and academic problem solving.
Holh Erickson , campus supervisor, loves to interact and help kids on a daily basis. Sht helped them problem solve and be safe in North Star.

"Space Jam"

Artist: Quad City DJ's Year: 1996

This year 's boys basketball team prided itself on its quick transitioning and high scoring offense, lead by senior point guard Triston Simpson. They scored more than 60 points in 13 of their 25 games, while reaching the 70 point mark in 4 different games.

In Quad City DJ's "Space Jam · the "shoot, baby shoof was repeated over and over again. The North Star team members prided themselves on being great shooters with a 44% shooting percentage. Even tall posts Hayden Carlson, Dillon Brandt, and Brock Johnson hit mid ' to long-range shoots showing off the team 's offensive versatility and shooting excellence.

Senior and captain T riston Simpson drives hard to the basket and finishes with two points and the foul. Simpson was a four year varsity let t er winner for the Gators and was a great leader on the team.

The 2015 , 2016 ooys basketball team was quite young but had several players with experience. The team was made up of six sophomores, four juniors, and three seniors. Seniors Triston Simpson and Logan Cale lead the starting five, along with junior Chase Townsend and sophomores Dillon Brandt and Brock Johnson. Each of the starting five had had previous experience playing at the varsity level. Simpson lead the team with his playmaking abilities and his experience of being a four year varsity player.

"This season has been different from my first three seasons because it is my senior year. This has been the first year where the team has had a lot of height and so that enables me to distribute the ball to the posts which changes the entire style of play," Simpson said.

Simpson was also one of the three captains along with the two other seniors Logan Cale and Hayden Carlson. Orrlson said, "Beating Southeast to get our first win of the season

helped u s gain confidence for the rest of the season. That fir st win really got things going for our team."

The boys team always played hard, and it seemed that each game nearly came down to the wire. Although they didn't have the season they hoped for, they did upset several teams including a 72-05 win over Westside on the - road.

The Gators came close to punching the ticket to state in a tough district final against Papillion , La Vista High School, but came up short. They finished the season 13,12 overall while also creating memories that will last forever. Caleb Osmond said, "I was really hype when we beat Norfolk on their home court because they were a really good team and it marked a turning point for our season."

North Star was very proud of each and every player and coach of the ooys team. They truly gave it their all and it showed in all their successes.

Logan Otle, Hayden Carlson, and T riston Simpson line up to meet with the officials before a game. These three were the only three seniors rn the team and served as team captains.
Jooah Housh plays stout defense against Lincoln Northeast. Housh was a starter on the junior varsity team and suited up for varsity games playing center.

"Get Your Head In The Game"

"Coach said to fake right and break left watch out for the pick and and keep an eye on defense

Gotta run the give and go and take the ball to the hole Like an old school pro"

This song relates to the girls basketball team this year f • many reasons. One reason was the girls were never afraid to make a new play to keep themselves in the game. They also liked to keep the ball moving by keeping the other teams constantly on the run.

The Lady Gators kept an eye on the defense to keep themselves in the game and were always ready to get the ball back.

With the return of many players and coaches, the Lady Gators were ready to make this season even better than the last. For the past three years the Lady Gators had been under head coach Al Simpson and Jeremy Wood who lead the Gators to improvement each and every year.

Sophomore Brooke Homer said that going into this year she wanted "to keep up the tempo from last year and keep winning games." With a senior--dominated team, the girls basketball team was ready to get the ball rolling fast. Junior Bailey Brown also said that this year she wanted "improve her skills to help her team reach its full potential." Junior T rystyn (})x said she "Wants to help the team as much as possible this year."

Even with this year being focused on improving over last season, many of the girls talked about the fun times they had during practices and bus rides. Brown had mentioned that her favorite memory on this years team was when, " Al wore two different shoes to practice." She also enjoyed all of the time she was able to spend with close friends.

It was safe to say this year's Lady Gators "Got Their Head In The Game" through having fun and constantly improving their skills to help their team become suceessfu~

Aoove Junior Jenna Tederman focu es on making her shot. Tederman started many games for the gators this year.
Senior Elaina Mayer prepares to make a basket. Mayer played a very important role on this years varsity team.
Sophomore Nathan Schmit swims the 100 meter freestyle. This one of the many swimming events they competed in at meets.

"My address is Hollywood 1-1-1-1 wouldn 't change it if I could

My address is Hollywood

My address is Holly w ood "

The song "My Address is Hollywood "was the perfect fit for Homecoming 2015 because the entirety of the song is about living where you do and '., i loving it We all came bac k to North Star High School year after year • because we e~joyed attending the school, and most of us wouldn 't have it , any other way The song also fits the theme of this year 's Homecoming which was "Hollywood Nights. "

Suits on, makeup and hair done, and pre, homecoming photo were posted to social media. As students arrived at North Star they get their Hollywood treatment, the Hollywood night had begun. Students filed into the bayou which has been transformed into a red carpet premiere, made possible by Student Council, the fun began.

Kicking off a night of sick music and dancing, students were detennined to bring the house down. Several hits including "Watch Me" (Whip, Nae ae) by Silento and "Hotline Bling" by Drake and some of the classics like the "Cha--Cha Slide" by DJ Caspergot the crowds moving on the dance floor. This year's fall show was a production of the "33rd Annual Putnam Omnty Easter Egg Hunt," which included a wide range of characters from the town alcoholic Judge Buford Pulander, portrayed by Chaney Bernt, to the overly protective mother Lambie Momoe, played by Taylor Yaussi.

This show was considered a huge success by many members of the cast. Bernt said "With a fall show this successful, I'm excited to see how we do for our One Act."

The performers took the audience through a journey in Putnam CDunty. The show followed the journey of Will Ferebee as he quested to find the golden egg while competing against the entire town. If that weren't enough, he had to continue to try to impress the love of his life, Perry Momoe, played by Dayonna Tucker. Sophomore Ruth Njuguna said "It was my first main role and I loved my script. It was a really funny show which was fun."

If the audience looked past the bright set or the colorful costumes, they saw a group of high schoolers held to a higher standard. The motto for the North Star Theatre is "Honor your theatre. Honor yourself." The show marked the beginning of the end for the seniors who had put so much time and effort of their high school careers into their theatre productions. The theatre director, Brenda Broeker said, "It makes me sad to think that this great group of leaders are graduating. I love them, I truly do."

Judge Pulander (Chaney Bernt) is passed out drunk while Mr. Waxley (Isaiah Peters) and Tomane Waxley (Noah Alby) are held hostage. This was the three seniors final fall show.

The African,American Student Caucus was a large group consisting of African American students from all interest groups at school, ranging from athletes to E,wingers to kids in the National Honor Society. The club met bi , weekly to discuss current events both on the national stage and at the school level. The club also focused on really engaging students in participating in and learning more about African American culture.

The club also did fundraising for a number of things, including a trip to Kansas City where they visit the Negro Baseball League Hall of Fame and the American Jazz Museum. On that same tri , they visited local colleges when they weren't eating some of the best barbecue in the country. Other money they raised went to a new t,shirt for members of the club. This year members went to the Blad Leadership Symposium hosted by the University of Nebraska,Lincoln.

Anime club was a great opportunity to learn about Japanese and Chinese cultures. The members met people who had the same tastes as their own. Autumn Dunn, the sponsor for this club, wanted to provide students with an opportunity to develop a greater interest in anime.

"I like anime and cartoons; I am a huge fan of Japanese culture," said Jace Angel. The members created animated films and cartoons with clifferent types of characters. They discussed Japanese and Chinese characters, making sure they created authentic characters following the proper anime form. Each member contributed in these animations using their best skills.

Choreographed choir was a class only available to Sophomores through Seniors. To be able to join you had to audition by learning a song and a dance and perform it under the direction of Joni Osbourne, the choral director. Only twelve people were able to be a part of this exclusive ensemble.

"Choreographed choir was a fun fast, paced class that keeps you on your toes, literally" said junior Breanna Pfanstiel. People who would love this class would not only be those who liked to obviously dance and sing, but also those who had a passion for performing and love the spotlight!

(})ncert Choir was a class available for 10th, 12th graders and was by audition only. It was an exciting year for the choir with director Joni Osborne winning the award for Nebraska Music Educator of the year. Osborne also was a part of the Metropolitan Opera where she traveled to New York City and met up with other outstanding choral directors and attended many workshops.

The students had many opportunities to learn about the arts, attending musical performances like the Tony Award winning musical A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Murder and listening to world renowned male acapella group Cantus. The choir not only got opportunities to see performances, some members even got to be in them. Eight North Star concert choir members participated in the lJNL Opera Amahl and the Night Visitors. "It was such a great experience and we learned so much from the lJNL Opera professors, we're very thankful for this opportunity" said Reagan Duranski.

Many students have felt like they had grown as people from

being in a tight knit group like (})ncert Choir. Senior Zach Miller said "I've learned to have a better understanding of music and have learned a lot through trusting my director." Miller and various music teachers nominated Osborne for the Music Educator of the Year award. "Mr. Salistean came to me and asked if I could write a letter of recommendation for her and I of course did! Mrs. Osborne has shown me in many ways that she deserves this award and I'm very thankful to have her as a director," said Miller.

Although working hard was a year ,long task for this group, having fun was a priority as well. In fact many friendships were made because of the amount of time the students spent together. Not only did the class have practice everyday together, they also spent time at choral concerts, performing for the community, and at competitions. Getting to know each other was a major key to their success. "The more time we spend together the better we sound, especially our vowels and understanding how we speak and sing ," said Breanna Pfanstiel.

If you went to any North Star varsity football or basketball games, then you would recognize the Dazzlers. The Dazzlers worked very hard this year, practicing five days a week from 6:15 to 7:30. All of their hard work paid off during their performances as they impressed many audiences throughout the year.

The Dazzlers were a spirit team and they performed at pep rallies, football games, and boys and girls basketball games. The majority of the group liked performing at football games the best because 'There are a lot more people watching the game, so that gives us a lot more energy," said Sophomore Leyten Morley.

This season the Dazzlers had twelve returning members and two new members. The girls were able to perfect their dances faster since so many members had already been on the team for a year.

There are many styles of dance, but the Dazzlers narrow their style selection to jazz, hip hop, and porn. The most popular style of dance of the Dazzlers members was "Jazz because it's fun and we are all 'unified' when we perform," said junior Maddie Spale.

• Throughout the Dazzler season, the girls accomplished many goals. At the end of June 2015, the girls and their coach, Dorann Avey, attended UDA camp at Creighton University in Omaha. At the camp the group was awarded a spirit stick and got a bid to nationals in Orlando, Florida.

Other than performing during halftime, the girls stood on the sidelines and cheered along with the cheerleaders, encouraging all of the players. Freshman Patia Wolfe's favorite part about her first year on Dazzlers was "Performing at the games and cheering on all of the players."

The band represented North Star at different places in school and around the community. North Star's Jazz Band members played an assortment of instruments such as the saxophone, trumpet, drums, trombone, bass, piano, and others.
