Man y people d idn t th ink the Olympics shou ld have been held there due to poor human rights , their stance toward Tibet and other reasons. Even with these problems , the Olympics ran smoothly . Here are some highlights! This year, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh defended their title by winning the beach volleyball gold medal.
Michael Phelps swam to history by winnng more gold medals then anyone else in Olympic history.
The Chinese gymnastics team also sparked controversy due to some saying they were not old enough to compete in the Olympics.
These were the Olympic mascots for the Beijing Olym.pics. They were used periodically in the games.
As for women's gymnastics, USA got first and second with Nastia Liukin in first and Shawn Johnson in second. China's Yang Yilin placed third.
LeBron James dunks the basketball to score in the game against China. The USA men's basketball team w ent on to win the tourna ment.
