Year after year, at the beginning of fall, girls dressed in disastrous clothing could be seen. The varsity volleyball team's most publicized tradition was kidnapping.

"At 6: 15 in the morning, my teammate came in my room, threw a bag at me, and told me to put [the clothes inside] on in five minutes. It wasn't a spirit day so rooming to school] wa~ really embarrassing, but [the volleyball team J should keep doing it because [the kidnapping] was fun and it brought the team together ," said freshman Alexandra Lempke.

"It's good to show others that there are good students in the classroom, and hopefully they will want to follow in [the shining stars'] footsteps," said sophomore Jordan Stoehr.

Freshmen shining bright in the classroom have been recognized as stars for several years now. This tradition has given various freshman recognition for being a leader.

"Alligator" was one of the o a.est cheers heard at as t High School, and it was definitely a crowd pleaser. This cheer brought energy and enthusiasm to the crowd by allowing the student section to join the cheer squad.

"[The Alligator Cheer J gets the student section hyped, and it's an awesome cheer. It's really energetic and it's the onl cheer I can remember" said senior Grace Barr

do Gajardo fi factory girls' ckness.

Theatre consisted of a lot of work , time spent on a stage out an audience and hours and hours of working together as a professional community. Through this hard work, the theatre community brought the historical Radium Girls script to life. This play was more than just some memorized lines: Radium Girls was something else.

Radium Girls is a story sh~wing the struggle of many characters, and even tragic death, during a few women's journeys. In an era when the ideology of safety in the workplace was almost nonexistent, women got sick and died through their work in a dial painting factory, as they ingested radium by licking the tips of brushes they used. By licking the tip of the brush it would allow them to paint the watches with a lot more precision, allowing them to perform a detailed work.

Every play has a hero--a character that saves the day through his or her actions. The theatre family's heroic figure in Radium Girls did not appear on stage in the play, but instead inspired the group through her DOSitivitv and strength to go through life with a smile on her face. Radium Girls was dedicated by the whole theater family to Mrs. Andrea Kabourek

"One of our directors was really "'close to her, and so she had the opportunity to read the play and by that she insDired us to keep going. Finding out about the sad news the whole theater family wanted to dedicate this play to her," said Nebraska Grayson. Kabourek had a strong imDact not only on the theatre, but also on the whole school.

d Sadie Fisher get justice.

"Its important for people to know what happened back then, because this is not just a story, this was something real," said freshman Kylie Miller. "It's a lot more serious and complex [ than East's previous plays]." Radium Girls changes erspectives thr9ugh awareness about what others didn't have in the past.

"Making a whole show out of a paper with words on it is the most incredible thing to see happen," said junior Maren Miller. Putting together a musical production o~en requires a heroic effort, and the musical, My Fair Lady, wouldn't have come alive if not for the hard work of the crew.

Junior Jacob Schoening agreed.

"The show wouldn't have been possible without the help from the crew," said Schoening.

"[There were J stressful times and very long nights ," said tech crew member, sophomore Belle Kendle. "But, in the process, I ended up making many memories and gaining another familv. "

Senior Kyle Harbor, who hopes to continue theatre in the future, was considered the crew head for the musical. He was in charge of organizing the backstage , and he had to make sure lighting and microphones were ready to go.

Also an essential part of My Fair Lady's success were accompanist Shelly Self and director Brett Epperson. Self also found costumes and helped with the little details that gave the musical its flair.

"[The musical was] a lot of work, but it was worth it in the end," said Self.

The stressful moments made the musical much better, as the crew saw their hard work pay off directly on stage. As My Fair Lady came to a close, the cast and crew became sentimental , including crew member sophomore Jaxsen Valenta.

"It was stressful making sure everything was ready to go on stage, but I was sad when [the musical J was over," said Valenta.

Seventy applicants, twelve speakers, and one speech on juvenile justice ncompassed Sarah Staples-Farmer's surreal experience of standing on the red tage at TED-X.

Her talk entitled, "A Matter of Grace ," touched on how the community hould show grace and forgiveness towards youth coming out of the juvenile ·ustice system. Many of these young people have difficult lives, and school tends o be a negative experience for them.

"I wanted people to consider how they could help these young people as hey try to transition from the juvenile justice system back into our ommunities in schools. They need help, forgiveness, support , and grace ," taples-Farmer said.

Staples-Farmer was first introduced to the possibility of sharing her ideas t TED-X after speaking with a group of university students. A student pproached her afterwards with the idea, so Staples-Farmer decided to •give it a ry.

Staples-Farmer submitted her application with 70 others. She was among he chosen final twelve.

It was a life changing experience for Staples-Farmer. She had the pportunity to talk with other speakers , listen to their presentations and nteract with them socially.

"We were cheering each other on," said Staples-Farmer. "I would do it all ver again in a heartbeat."

As nervous as she was, Staples-Farmer was proud to be able to share the mportant message, which she spent five years studying, with many others. She oped that through her message, others would be inspired to broaden their derstandin and activate chan ______ _, .......----#

During senior year, every student pondered their next chapter after high school. Many seniors frantically completed college visits , stressed over admission applications, searched for scholarships , and tried to find their place. Our special education students were no exception, as many of them opted to secure a spot in the LPS VOICE Program. VOICE stands for Vocational Opportunities In the Community Experience.

"My biggest goal is to make sure every one of my students is ready for the VOICE program by their senior year," said special education teacher, Mrs.Bright.

"This program provides special education students an opportunity to learn to thrive in real world situations," said special education administrator, Tara Troy.

Unia11e to Lincoln Public Schools , the VOICE Program provided vocational training for students who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Through this program, students learned to follow a dress code, take health tests , complete forms, report on time, and, most importantly, productively interact with others on the job and in life.

"Each student admitted to the VOICE program can select from a variety of community sites " said Brian Foley,

head director of the VOICE program. These sites included BryanLGH Warehouse, Embassy Suites, Food Bank of Lincoln, Hy-Vee, Lincoln Public Schools Duplex, Southeast Community College, LPS Career Academy or UNL Housing.

Helping each student achieve their • full potential and find their purpose in life is a noble goal. The LPS VOICE program made a significant and life altering difference in the lives of these students .

The Career Academy was a big hit. This newly founded program was all about getting prepared for action in the future and getting ahead in the career force.

The Academy had many different pathways to starting a career, including construction, K-12 education, programming, entrepreneurship, engineering, culinary arts , welding, and health sciences. In these pathways, students obtained career superpowers in a positive learning environment. 3

"The people are really nice, and I like the learning environment," said Career Academy

senior Kassi Broman, who was involved in the K-12 pathways. Health sciences student junior Carolyn Hopkins said, "Everyone's nice. It is like friendly competition."

Everyone was trying to reach their full potential while still empowering everyone else to do their best. The best part? The credits received from Southeast Community College counted a both college and high school credit. And by taking college classes for a lower rate at SOC, students could simultaneously explore career fields and save money along the way.

With an astonishing 200 plus members, the Spartan marching band was a league of superheroes. From July to October, their dedication and impeccably practiced routines were seen and heard. However, a lot more went on in marching band beyond just the halftime performances, competitions, and early morning practices.

"The best part of marching band is the community feel," said senior Isaac Whitman, a tuba player. "You're friends with pretty much everybody, although you may not know everybody."

.Another perk of being in marching band was the DOsitive values learned while being a part of a team.

"A lot of people learn leadershiD skills , because you have different levels of leadership. I learned how to repair instruments and little

things like that," said Whitman. Marching band took more heroic traits than just the ability to play music. Even with all the practicing, rehearsals, and performances , there was time to just have fun, but of course , no team would be complete without their share of challenges.

Freshman .drumline member, Adam Arslan, mentioned the most difficult part of marching band revolved around the multitasking aspects.

"You have to memorize all your music, and then you have to memorize your sets , and then that's all in step," Arslan said Overall, marching band was a close knit team that worked well, both during practice, and not.

"Like drumline, they're my closest friends ," said Arslan.

Imagine Ariel without Flounder, Tina without Amy, or Batman without Robin. These pairs are inseparable, and couldn't function without each other.

The same was true for FCS teachers, Anne Daly and Brittany Staack.

Sitting next to each other in the main office, waiting for their job interviews was where they first met.

"It was friendship at first sight," said Daly.

From that point on, they were best friends. Staack loved the ecstatic energy- that Daly gave off in a room.

"It would be seven o'clock,

singing and dancing!" said Staack.

Daly loved how passionate Staack was about teaching. Staack had the power to engage students in the lassroom, while Daly's positive energy- enveloped a room and fought bad moods. Together, these women brought spice into the classroom by teaching students life skills.

"We are helping students become successful young adults," said Staack. "{In addition} , Expectations and rules in the classroom also prepare students."

They directed students into "something they interact with and are going to be around their whole life, like kids," according to Staack.

While not all students will need to use the Pythagorean Theorem in their everyday lives , they will need to know how to interact with other people.

Together Daly and Staack give guidance for students' future by giving them a distinct learning experience.

roman ear y age, stu ents are taug t to steer clear of peer pressure. Yet, if not for the convincing encouragement from close friends , senior Emily Breit wouldn't have discovered her true passion for choral music.

"A collection of my friends were like, 'Hey, you should try out for choir,' so I did before my junior year," recalled Breit.

In just a year, Breit transitioned from singing in the car with her brother to becoming a devoted member of East Singers and Express , •oining an octet, assistant teaching for Elegance, and snagging a role in the musical, My Fair Lady. Though Breit's involvement in choral groups sprung quickly, her passion for music was undeniable.

"I've .always enjoyed music, and I really like to sing." Aside from pure enjoyment, Duhs uses his choral classes as a mental escape.

" [ Choir is J a break from all of my core classes ," Duhs said. "It's nice to have a break from constantly being taught things."

Because of their strong passions, and despite the hours of hard work, Duhs and Breit both agree that choir has impacted their lives for the better.

"I've met some really good friends in choir, and the environment is really fun," said Duhs.

Choir has particularly made a powerful , lasting impression on Breit.

When someone said the word "clogging," a first thought might have been of wooden shoes or a southern lifestyle. However, what some people may not know is we had a group of six dedicated cloggers here who are a part of the competition team: Sole Patrol.

"[Clogging] is kind of like tap, but it's so much faster with more arm movements and ·hip-hop," described sophomore Peyton Potratz, who has been clogging for ten years.

"It's fun, energetic , and unique," said fellow clogger, sophomore Karissa Karg.

When asked about the team atmosphere , both Potratz and Karg agreed that everyone on the team were close friends. It was not surprising everyone in Sole Patrol grew such close bonds considering the amount of time they saw each other every week. Practice is Sundays for two hours, but for upcoming competitions, the team increased to three to four times per week. Most of their competitions took place in southern states; the team usually competes in Tennessee and Kentucky, but they have also been to Georgia, South Carolina, and Nevada, among others.

With their experience in the group, Potratz and Karg gave advice to aspiring cloggers.

"Give it time, and you need to have fun with it," said Potratz. "Once you get it, you will love it!"

"Just give it your best," said Karg. "You're not going to be great when you start, but eventually you'll get

Tiaras, ball gowns and glass slippers are usually what ccompany the thought of Drincesses . Yet senior Taya Wright's oyalty status was awarded after a competition filled with drums, egalia and ethnic dancing.

Wright was crowned princess of the Northern Ponca Tribe ocated here in Nebraska.

After 16 years of actively participating with the Ponca tribe, right was clearly more than qualified for the position. In 8th grade, she was invited to Washington D.C. to dance for Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor.

"I didn't believe it at first," said Wright of her victorv that ook place August of 2015 , just before her senior year.

Competing with and against her cousin, Wright had more han enough to be nervous about. The two were neck and neck in he competition's dance off. Wright was fearless.

"It was very close between my cousin and I," said Wright. "We dance so much alike." The dances featured in the competition ere not choreographed, so all of the contestants danced on the spot. Most would shy away at the thought of an improvised dance, ut not Wright.

"I dance with the beat of the drum," Wright said with onfidence. "I stop thinking and just do it." After achieving great success, Wright what she has gained new insight and has learned rom this valuable experience.

School counselors and psychologist did the exact same thing ... Psych! They had totally different jobs and served different roles within our school. School counselors were individuals who helped with schedules, offered a listening ear, and worked to make school a positive environment. Counselors work in three main areas: personal/social, academic, and career planning.

"We have about a fifty- fifty split between academic/career and personal/social concerns," said counselor Kristin Murphy.

The school counselors and school psychologist worked together.

"We work closely, especially when it comes to specific students and their needs. Even today I just worked with the counselors to change a student's schedule," said school psychologist Julie Ramel.

Another time the counselors work with the psychologist is "when a student has a concussion," Karen Dress said. This type of collaboration is a great example of how mental, academic , and extracurricular

Mrs. Murphy getting work done participation all her office(photo by Sydni came together as Aie.teiiiriiis.eniiii)i.i·--.--------~ part of the high sc oo experience.

The main job of a school psychologist was to assess a student and help develop an individualize plan to help them be successful. School psychologists' expertise is in mental health, learning, and behavior.

The counselors' jobs are more focused on making sure that students graduate and maintain the skills they need to be successful citizens along the way. They get a masters degree in School Counseling, while school psychologists get degrees in school psychology.

Murphy, Dress, and Ramel all originally starte as teachers and enjoyed the in depth student interaction so much that it inspired them to transfer into the careers they have today; they get to learn the ins and outs of every single one of us.

Don't think parents were the only ones watching.

A whopping 68 freshman were listed on the 2015 Freshman Football roster. On the field, they found strength , speed , talent , and leadership . With so many guys on a team, leaders must emerge, and the quarterback position is where leaders are bound to be found.

"The quarterback is the guy that has to get everyone fired up, be encouraging , and get them ready to play," said Freshman Devin Beckner, whose leadership and talent could be found on and off the Reserve field.

Aside from talent, these boys' motivation ultimately led to the success of our young Spartan teams. All these boys play for something, whether it is to win, to get better, or to impress someone.

"My father could not play football in high school, and I want to make him proud with my high school football career," said Beckner. Beckner was motivated by the desire to

make his father proud, like many of his teammates. Playing time for freshman was extremely limited due to the massive number of players , but in the end, the benefits outweighed the costs.

"One positive of a large team is that there will always be someone to back you up if you get hurt," said freshman Hunter Mutz.

In the face of injury, there was always another player willing to rise up to the challenge and step in. •

"You do everything for your team and not for yourself," said Freshman Connor Riekenberg, who has been playing football since fourth grade.

This mighty freshman team was the largest of which any of the boys, some who have been playing for ten years, have been a part.

Leaving everything on the field meant much more than it did a short year ago.

Most thought that building a successful team atmosphere with sophomores and juniors new to playing on a varsity team would be challenging. But according to the girls on the varsity softball team, creating a bond quickly was no problem.

"The girls on the team are more than teammates; they're like sisters," said sophomore Mekenna Frederick.

The aspect of family is carried through all three teams. "Softball made making friends easier," said freshlnan Natalie Alexander. "It's always cool to walk around [East J and see all of the girls."

These girls constantly want to help win for their team, but being injured can make that hard. Sophomore Chloe Jones injured her shoulder near the end of the season, yet she still supported her team on the sidelines.

11 I miss playing, but I support [the girls on the team J fully because they are like a - family, and they would do the same for me" said Jones.

Many of the girls on the team devote all of their time to softball. Essentially, softball is their life. "I don't know what I would without [ softball J , or especially the girls on the team," said sophomore, Morgan Barmore, whose mom played softball in high school and father played slow pitch.

Junior, Payton Swanson also carries on a family tradition, as she plays alongside her sister, Chace, on the Varsity Softball Team. Both girls believe that the family tradition and family feel is integral throughout out the sport.

Softball isn't a team: it's a family that .....----------------------works as one. Some superheroes worked

"It didn't hit me until later that I actually won state, but it feels really good," said Junior Mason Williams.

Even though Williams played alone on the court, his success wouldn't have been possible without the support of his coach,JeffHoham.

"My coach kept telling me I am good enough to win and that I can do it," said Williams.

Lots of practice went into the makings of winning state and it finally paid off. Now that he reached his dream, Williams will continue work his hardest at becoming the best athlete he can be.

To many people, cheerleading was bows, porn porns, and girls jumping around trying to exhilarate a crowd . Well, stereotypes were broken. The Freshman Cheer team had an unexpected addition to their squad : male cheerleader, Kobe Brown.

Freshman Kobe Brown already impacted East as an eighth grader. brown made his first introduction in the spring of 2015 , as he danced on stage with his clogging team during the Snatraps Talent Show.

No clogging was in sigh,. but he was seen cheering his way through the halls.

11 This is my first year of cheering and it's easier in a way [than clogging],

because you don't have to focus on your feet placement , 11 Brown said.

11 ! don't really think about it too much, 11 said Brown, regarding his position as the only male cheerleader , 11 I know other people think it's weird and all but I don't really care and I haven't had any problems.

11

Ko be was like your normal freshman, with just a ·kick of excitement. Since he started cheer leading, he always had someone to talk to and has been in a better mood. He loved performing in fr ont of people and everyone on the squad was cordial.

"If you want to do something, do it , don't be shy. Join clubs and get involved ," said Brown.

There was no off-season for the boys varsity basketball team. Months before practice started; these boys were found together , playing games , lifting, running, and shooting. Once basketball season officially began, they amped up their previous conditioning by running more during practice, and continuing to lift weights in the mornings.

And at the final buzzer in the RAC championship, their hard work paid off as they were crowned champions , beating Fremont 71-58.

"It was a close game going into the second half, and then we pulled away in the third quarter," senior Clay Reimers said.

"We had to keep our foot on the gas to get the win," said sophomore Jordan Jans sen. The physical grit , however, wasn't the only thing that contributed to the team's exciting success.

Focus and team values made up the core of the season.

"[My teammates] are all positive ," said Reimers. "If anything goes 1,'\Trong, they're constantly positive."

As an underclassmen, Janssen appreciated the atmosphere the more experienced players set up for him.

"Before games, I get kind of nervous," he said. "Some of the younger ones [go through similar nerves J , but some of the older ones are used to it, so they don't get as nervous. They try to keep us calm."

Above all, the team's power was credited to their shared value of supporting each other in every situation. These boys rehearsed both physical drills in practice and team camaraderie on the sidelines.

"We work as one," Reimers said. "Everyone contributes."

The varsity girls basketball team has had its fair share of athletes over the years , but finally, they ound their perfect niche. All 15 players, whether hey were on the court or on the sideline, worked ard and supported one another.

"This team has great potential , and I am ecstatic o see what we can accomplish," said senior Grace arry.

Every player on the team was a superhero in heir own way, and with Coach Dennis Prichard, they ere sure to find success .

"Prichard is very excited and knowledgeable , so e can lead the team well," said Barry.

Sophomore Allison Roh agreed.

"Coach Prichard is a fun coach and knows how to tilize his players," she said.

Yet the victories did not come easy; the practices ere long and exhausting. Practices consisted of skill ark, ball handling and creating chemistry. But hankfully, the family atmosphere helped the team come together and step up against their opponents.

"Every practice felt less and less like a team and ore like a family," said Roh.

Building the familv bond was the key to success or this team. Together they showcased their uperpowers on the court and beat Millard West, the umber one ranked team in the state.

Movies and television shows often portray high schoolers as walking roller coasters of emotion who spontaneously erupt into song and dance numbers. In eality, the daily existence of a high school student is uch more mundane. While an occasional perfectly choreographed dance number would spice things up a bit, ·gh school is about education and defining yourself as a · erson. Campus Spiritual Impact (CSI) worked to help students define themselves on the roller coaster of high school.

"The goal of CSI is to help students live for Christ and • corporate faith into all aspects of life," said club leader Linda Roh.

The club worked to promote students' knowledge an derstanding of the Bible and also helped students apply hat knowledge to their daily lives.

"CSI is about focusing on Jesus and making Him a art of your life in high school," said junior Josh Roh.

The club had humble beginnings a few short years go when a group of students sought fellowship and support.

The club had many members, but the base remains olid and focused on Christ. While CSI may not be erforming dance numbers, they are helped students feel ore welcome to share their faith in high school.

Just as any good superhero needs support, the Spartans need student council. As s tr ong leaders of our school, student council wor k e d hard to keep our students excited and up to date on events and organized memo rable experiences for everyone. Student Council President and fourth year memb e r Julia Messineo thought it would be a go od way to get involved and meet new peop l e.

"The friendships I have mad e from being a part [ of StuCo J and getting to know people I never would've otherwise are amazing things," she said.

Everyone agreed that in add ition to making East the best place it can be, th ey all really enjoy "SNOF"- StuCo Night o f F un, an event where all the members get tog ether and have a blast just enjoying eachother 's company.

Freshman Will Hind has e njoyed these fun nights and loved participating in [StuCo-

r elated J activities.

"I really enjoy volunteering, and wanted t o be apart of something special. I wanted to improve my leadership skills," he said.

As leaders of our student body, StuCo m embers have had fun planning out different oc casions , pep rallies and academic events.

Junior Logan Kelley relished these op portunities for fun.

"It' s really fun to be involved, ' cause you have .th e events, the academics, and when it all co mes together you're like 'YES!"' he said.

R e a gan Ostrander has been involved with StuCo for two years now and planned on returning for the years to come. As a sophom ore , she looked forward to more res ponsibility for the upcoming years and had advice for incoming members.

"Mak e sure you participate," she said. "The m ore y au put in, the more you get out."
