A smile is quite a funny thipg It wrinkles up your face. And when it's gone you never find It's secret hiding place. But far more wonderful it is, To see what smiles can do. You smile at one, he smiles at you, And so one smile makes two. Now since a smile can do great good By cheering hearts.
Lets smile and smile and not forget, That smiles go everywhere!

I borrow thoughts from yesterday To keep my memory bright. The trials, the tears, succe s and joy, Are thoughts which I invite. I would not care to lose the past For riches there are stored, In wealth of knowledge gained through years In spheres which I explored.

The line between failure and success is so fine that we scarcely know when we pass it.
So fine that we are often on the line and we don't know it.

The ninth grade football teams did very well this season. Ninth graders go out for football at the high •school they will be attending. Football players are divided into lightweights (under 135 pounds) and heavyweights (over 135 pounds).
"Once again the Culler Ninth Grade Volleyball Team had a great season! Both reserve and varsity teams ended up with a winning record of 5-3. The reserve team ended up in 2nd place and the varsity team ended up in 3rd place out of nine total teams in the city.
Congratulations on a super year!"
Coach Biegert

"Culler's 9th grade Cross Country teams finished a successful season by taking second in the all city meet at Pioneer Park.
They were narrowly defeated by East with the rest of the junior high teams far behind them.
The running Cougars were led by two late arrivals, Jim Mahoney and Todd Noble. They were ably supported by three of last year's eighth grade city championship team, Mark Lyon, Evan Scheele, and Mike Crosgrove.
Others which contributed a great deal to the team were Matt Langemeier, Dave Jordan, Mike Reilley and the best 9th grade girl cross country runner in Culler history, Julie Hansen."
Coach Rutz
' Culler's ninth grade wrestling season was highlighted by Garland Gaskins' city championship victory, which was also a self-made birthday present. Dave Rall and Greg Myers finished fourth in the city meet. Many others contributed a great deal to the team including Craig Titsworth, Mike Masek, Richard Beenblossom, Todd Tafoya, Dan Mares, Steve VanWinkle, Dennis Wylie, Doug Unruh, Todd Yost, and Jeff Bennett."

"This year's ninth grade team was one of the most pleasant groups we have been associated with. We played our most difficult games within the first three weeks of the season. The girls did not get down on themselves but fought back to win 5 straight and finish third in the city. This was a rewarding year to us as coaches and we hope the girls have the same feeling."

"The Culler Varsity Basketball team had a successful season in 19 0, in winning 5 games while losing 3. This year's team was one of the shortest in the school' history but made up for their lack of size with a great deal of hustle and effort. A good attitude and steady improvement by the players helped make this year's team a very enjoyable one to work with."
Coach Richardson
"The Culler boys' reserve basketball team finished the 1980 season with a 3-4 record, which was good for 5th place in the city standings. Although the final record was somewhat disappointing, I was very pleased with the great improvement that several players showed over the course of the season. Steve Van Winkle led the reserves in scoring this year, while Bob Dean finished second. Dan Mares proved to be the most improved player by the end of the season."
Coach Waters
Reserve Basketball
A fourth place finish in the city meet helped to provide a successful gymnastics season. Having a reasonably small team, it was the hard work of each individual that helped to maintain our competitiveness throughout the year."
Coach Geis
"The 1981 Culler ninth grade gymnastics team capped off a frustrating season with a sixth place finish in the city. Their regular season dual meet record was a respectable 2-2, but the Cougar guys were unable to put it together for the city meet. Performing well for the Cougars were Rick Sargent and Tony Wells, while first year gymnasts Mark Lyon and Dan Mares showed steady improvement during the season."
Coach Waters
Track season at Culler lasts from April 6th until May 23rd. Track team members work hard on all events. The Culler boys' track team and girls' track team are both working up to their expectations for the year.

' Culler Junior High boys' intramural program offers the students an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities. The year starts off with flag football games and soccer, and then is followed in order by basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, volleyball, and track. Year long activities include the 100 mile club for runners and the weight program for body builders. Culler offers a program to suit the interest of almost every student. All you need to do is participate!"
Coach Richardson
"Fun, vigorous exercise, and meeting of friends are a few of the things you will experience in the girls' intramural program. The gymnasium is open to any seventh or eighth grade girl every day from 7:45 to 8:30 in the morning and again in the afternoon from 2:30 to 3:30 plus every Saturday morning from 9:00 to 11:30. Depending ·on the season, a variety of activities is planned. The yearly program includes: cross country, running, volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, badminton, ping pong, track, and softball. In addition, the weight room is available every afternoon.
Competition against other schools is offered on special Saturday mornings. This competition allows a girl to sharpen her skills and meet girls from other schools. The sports included in this program are: volleyball , gymnastics, basketball, and track and field."

On March 3, 1981, Joseph F. Beckton died at the age of 14. Joe was born on August 10, 1966, in Bay City, Michigan. He had three brothers and three sisters.
Joe played the trumpet in the ninth grade band and stagehand. Some of his favorite pastimes were skating, playing the trumpet, and all kinds of sports.
Everyone who know Joe was his friend. We will remember him as we always saw him - joking, laughing, and wearing his hat.
Hand it over, Bucko! ! !

Give what you can and then give more Of the love you've held back in store. Loving share all you possess, Your reward will be labeled happiness. For the love that you give comes back to you twofold And what you receive is more precious than gold.
by Margorie (Burd) McGown
Most students look forward to Culler dances. A denim dance was held on October 10th and a winter dance was on December 12th. Sound Unlimited provided the music. A spring dance will be held in April and the ninth graders will have a promotion dance on May 29th.
Top right: Is this a new kind of dance? ?

Lower left: Get up and Boogie!
Lower right: Doesn't anyone dance at the dances??
Top left: Fact: There are 37 teeth in this picture!

Vocal music is open to anyone at Culler. Five major classes meet during the day, including two sections of eighth-ninth grade girls and one section each of seventh grade boys, seventh grade girls, and eighth-ninth grade boys.
Three small groups rehearse outside of school time. The members are chosen by tryouts in the fall of the school year. These groups are the Culler Carousels, the eighth grade mixed chorus and the ninth grade mixed chorus. The ninth grade mixed chorus performed at various functions throughout the community.
Culler has many instrumental groups. Seventh, eighth, and ninth grade bands are for all wind players. Many times these groups are combined for concerts. Stage Band meets two times each week for 2½ hours credit each semester. The members are chosen by tryouts in the fall of the school year. Orchestra is made up of seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. All string players automatically register for Orchestra but strong wind players are needed in the group, so they are • selected by Mrs. Adams. All small groups and ensembles are chosen from the outstanding players in any grade. These groups perform away from school, and at elementary schools. A beginning guitar class is offered each year to all students that own a guitar and want to participate in an early morning class at 7:30. This class meets once a week.
Adams directing.
Members of the stage band get ready to practice.
Culler's Student Council works on many different things. For example, the Student Council decorates, sells tickets and pop, and cleans up for the dances. The Student Council buys things for the school such as digital thermometers for the nurse, plants, flowers, and a wheel chair for the gyms. Also the Student Council distributes I.D. cards and organizes the teachers' breakfast and the honor students' breakfast. The officers are: President - Lisa Thompson, Vice-President - Carla Hansen, and Secretary - Marcia Miller.
Red Cross members are involved in many activities. The Red Cross sponsored the Thanksgiving canned food drive. Cans were collected and given to needy families. The class collecting the most cans received free ice cream. The Red Cross also donated money to KFOR Operation Santa Claus and decorated and took cookies to the Veterans' Hospital. Members of Red Cross attend monthly meetings with members from other junior highs. Some members attend a summer camp to learn leadership skills. Heather Johnson is Red Cross president and Mrs. Becker is the sponsor.
Drama classes work on improving skills that will enhance their ability for working in groups, improvisations, creativity and performing in front of audiences. Drama II classes have the opportunity to perform for various audiences such as elementary schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and nursery schools.
We are proud of the many talented students at Culler. These are not the only talented students at Culler, but just a sample of the wid1 variety of student talent.
Evan Scheele (above) is a talented artist. He is a cartoonist, and works mainly with water colors. He has painted the windows at Burger King and the checkout counter in Phidippidies.
Steve Strauss (below) is a very exceptional musician. He is a drummer in the 7th grade band. Steve is a person to watch for in the future.

Joel Grenemeier is one of many outstanding art students at Culler. One of his special areas in art is pottery. He has also won national titles in walk racing. He is 1st in state, and is 4th in the country.
Ju lie Kirk has been diving for eight years. In that time she has won 3 trophies, 11 medals, and about 22 ribbon s. She has qualified for many meets, like the Region 7 ch ampionship in Iowa during 1979 and the Region 5 champ ionships in Minnesota during 1980. Julie thinks tha t diving is a challenge but also real fun.
Brian Salak received 3 awards from the Lincoln Star newspaper. He won the Inland Press Award for good grades, good behavior, and a good record with the company.
He won the Senior Carrier A ward for being a great paperboy.
He also won a $100 scholarship for the college of his choice. This was for being the best Lincoln Star carrier in the city. They judged on his record, grades, compliments, and complaints.
Year book was a class this year for the first time. It was held during sixth period, first semester only. Besides doing layouts and writing copy, the staff did the photography work. All photography, processing, and printing, with the exception of processing on the class pages, was done by staff members. Several members of the staff also helped with the typing. The sections for which people were responsible are listed on the next page, although everyone helped each other on their pages. Mrs. Kuhl assisted the yearbook staff.
Rhonda Stewart doesn't want her picture taken.
Miche lle Martinez, shown with editor, Rene Bomberger, was on the yearbo ok staff for part of first semester.

They are always liard at work
Well, almost always!
The 1980-1981 Charles Culler Junior High Yearbook~ is dedicated to Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Ochsner, and Mrs. Lowe. They have played a very important role in the yearbook staffs and other activities of the school.
They have typed, sent correspondence, and handled money and receipts. They are important in public relations, and have advised us with appropriate school procedures and human services.
We haven't stopped to say "Thank you" as much as we should have , so this is our way of saying, "You are the best office personnel any school could ever have. Thanks for everything."
