Dear Friends of Lee Pesky Learning Center,
Thank you for a great year! LPLC launched several new initiatives, served a record number of students through Literacy Pods, and had an exciting leadership transition — all of which will move us into greater positive impact.
The Lee Pesky Literacy Pods continues to transform education for English learners. Literacy Pods are an evidence-based literacy and language program designed to meet the needs of Multilingual Learners developing foundational reading skills in English. We served 125 first through third grade students, our largest group to date. To continue this transformative summer work, the program is now delivered year-round. Over 90% of the students benefiting from this foundational reading program are English learners whose families have recently moved to the United States. This research-based program is also relationship-based with core partners including the Blaine County School District, Vallivue School District, Treasure Valley YMCA, Far and Wise nonprofit, and the College of Idaho.
World- renowned researcher and consummate connector, Dr. Bob Ballard, keynoted a LPLC event, sharing his deep-sea research and discoveries including the wreck of the Titanic. Dr. Ballard also shared how he navigated parenting a child with learning differences by working with educational researchers and educators. Like LPLC, Dr. Ballard exemplifies how lives are changed forever through the power of research and partnerships.
Maureen O’Toole stepped into the Executive Director (ED) role in early August, bringing extensive experience in community partnerships, education, and nonprofit leadership. Dr. Lindy Crawford has completed a successful tenure as Executive Director and will remain on the team, transitioning into a research and fundraising role for LPLC.
In other big leadership news, we launched the Wendy Pesky Endowed Chair in Clinical Psychology at our spring event, naming 25-year LPLC veteran, Dr. Anne Clohessy, as inaugural Chair. We are deeply grateful to those who helped honor the legacy of Wendy Pesky through the creation of this prestigious position.
Thank you for partnering with LPLC to create a pathway of learning for everyone.
Warm Wishes,

Maureen O’Toole Executive Director

Greg Pesky Board Chair
Lee Pesky had learning disabilities at a time when there was little understanding of common issues like dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD. His family struggled to find the support Lee needed in overcoming his obstacles to learning. They did the best they could with the few resources available at the time, and Lee was able to complete college and become a business owner. After their son passed away in 1995 from brain cancer at the age of 30, Alan and Wendy Pesky founded Lee Pesky Learning Center to honor Lee’s legacy by helping children with learning differences in a holistic, learner-centric way.
“I will always recommend Lee Pesky. They have forever earned my trust.” —LPLC Alumni

LPLC’s service delivery model embraces a three-tiered approach:
1. Evidence-based training for teachers
2. Literacy instruction for English learners
3. 1:1 evaluation, academic intervention, academic coaching, and counseling
With the generous support of our community, we have helped over 100,000 students and an average of 1,000 educators annually with Professional Development training. Our reach includes 11 states.

Lee Pesky Learning Center’s services are delivered through a three-tiered model aligned with our Self-Regulated Learner (SRL) framework, which is grounded in scientific evidence highlighting the importance of self-regulation for school success and lifelong learning. We define self-regulated learners as those who are connected, self-aware, self-determined, strategic, and resilient, recognizing that students may excel in some areas while needing support in others.
Self-aware: students understand their strengths and needs as learners, they understand how their actions affect themselves and those around them.
Connected: learners feel safe and as if they belong.

Self-determined: learners are self-directed and have authentic and personal agency over their learning.
Strategic: learners have a large repertoire of learning strategies and can select and effectively use the appropriate strategy to reach their learning goal.
Resilient: learners can use strategies to recover from difficulty or disappointment and are able to adapt to stress or adversity.

As lead Education Specialist at Lee Pesky Learning Center, Ashley Rowe is passionate about helping students discover their inner mathematician by making math playful and relevant to everyday life. As LPLC’s lead mathematics interventionist, she also coauthored a research-based book chapter, A Framework for Assessing Students’ Written Explanations of Numerical Reasoning, highlighting her commitment to advancing math education. The chapter emphasizes the importance of providing opportunities for students to communicate their thinking and encouragement for teachers to evaluate the conceptual understanding being developed in their classrooms.
We are excited to announce Anne Clohessy as the inaugural Wendy Pesky Endowed Chair of Clinical Psychology at Lee Pesky Learning Center. Established in December 2023, this position honors co-founder Wendy Pesky’s deep commitment to enriching the lives of every individual student who walks through our doors.
With over 25 years at LPLC, Anne is passionate about helping students overcome learning challenges. Her compassionate, individualized approach reflects her deep dedication to understanding each student’s unique needs. Anne finds joy in seeing her clients grow over the years, from early evaluations in elementary school to helping them navigate transitions into higher education, making a lasting impact on their educational journeys.

Following Lee Pesky Learning Center’s founding in 1997, Alan and Wendy Pesky made the decision to direct the remainder of Lee’s estate to create a separate endowment fund to support LPLC’s work. This initial investment continues to grow to provide a foundation for LPLC’s future. LPLC’s endowment provides long-term support for services, research, and training.

In the past year, Lee Pesky Learning Center’s Tier 1 Team trained over 1,195 early childhood and K-12 educators across Idaho and distributed more than 5,000 learning mats to promote kindergarten readiness. By offering professional development in early literacy, early numeracy, best practices in the science of reading instruction, self-regulation, and supporting students with dyslexia, LPLC equips educators and families with tools and strategies to ensure student success. Additionally, the Tier 1 team provides training opportunities in both English and Spanish to early childhood educators throughout Idaho.

The image below illustrates the impact of our work with regions served.

Since its start in summer 2020 with just 8 students, Lee Pesky Learning Center’s Literacy Pods Program has grown to support 187 students as of August 2024. By providing personalized, one-on-one or small group instruction, the program helps close the educational gap and significantly improves students’ literacy skills and academic success.

Oral reading fluency, the ability to read aloud with accuracy, speed, and expression, is a critical skill for strong reading comprehension. Improving fluency helps students better understand and engage with text, paving the way for overall academic success. Participants all showed growth in oral reading fluency as part of Tier 2 Support.
Utilizing the science of reading and evidencebased practices, these interventions have led to significant improvements in students’ phonemic awareness, word reading, and passage reading. In partnership with local school districts and community programs, we offer both summer and year-round reading support.

97%
of students receiving academic intervention in reading made progress, an INCREASE OF 2% over the reported growth last year.
Lee Pesky Learning Center’s Tier 3 services offer comprehensive, personalized support for students with learning and attention challenges. Our multidisciplinary approach includes in-depth evaluations, academic interventions, and academic coaching to develop essential academic and self-regulation skills. We also provide counseling to help students and families manage the emotional and social aspects of learning difficulties, fostering resilience and self-regulation for lasting success in school and life.
100%
of current counseling clients report reaching social-emotional targets, A 10% INCREASE over last year.
It has been another year of transforming lives together. Donors, grantors, community partners, and sponsors are part of the LPLC team. Learning disabilities cause academic and social-emotional struggles, but together we create a positive pathway through learner-centric support. The learner who received academic and/or emotional support, the educator who created a more inclusive classroom for learning differences, the parent who felt relief and joy as a child grew in academics and self-confidence — you touched all these lives.
To all the individuals and organizations listed on the subsequent pages, Thank You. Your financial support From July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, helped create a pathway to learning.
From the bottom of our hearts, Thank You.
