Three centuries later, The Cleveland Orchestra celebrates the enduring power of J.S. Bach’s sacred music
ON GOOD FRIDAY , March 30, 1725, the congregation of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig was dismissed from services with the final plaintive chords of the St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach still ringing in their ears. Jesus had been laid in his tomb and was to suffer no more. In contrast, two days later on the morning of Easter Sunday, the

During this time, music for the church dominated his compositional output; indeed, most of the sacred music in Bach’s catalog was composed during these years, building a legacy of his faith that has endured three centuries.

church rang with the opening celebratory notes of Bach’s newest work, a cantata that would eventually become the Easter Oratorio, marking the miraculous resurrection.
Three hundred years after its premiere, The Cleveland Orchestra gives the Easter Oratorio a resurrection of its own in a program highlighting Bach’s sacred music. All three works this evening came out of the period between 1723 and 1733, the first decade of Bach’s tenure as Director musices, or director of musical activities, in Leipzig’s churches
To be clear, Bach did not originally write the music of the Easter Oratorio for Easter. In fact, until a revision dated 1738, it was not called an “oratorio” at all. The first iteration of the work was a secular cantata from February 1725, whose music and text were reworked during March of that year into an Easter Sunday cantata titled Kommt, gehet und eilet (Come, go and hurry). Some of the music for these cantatas may have even been retrofitted from a concerto grosso composed during

Bach’s time in Köthen (before his arrival in Leipzig). On one hand, this was not atypical of Bach’s music, nor of Baroque-
era composers generally; Bach would frequently rework his existing compositions and transplant segments — even entire movements — into new works. However, the winding path of the Easter Oratorio’s inception did contribute to
a few key distinctions that set it apart from other oratorios.
One such difference is that the text of the Easter Oratorio eschews literal scripture — instead, Bach opted for newly written German text, atypical for an oratorio, likely by the poet Picander (the pen name of Christian Friedrich Henrici). In addition, Bach omitted the role of an Evangelist who would normally narrate the events of the story by quoting directly from the Gospel. Rather, in the Easter Oratorio, the four

There is no shortage of emotionally evocative words within the text — laughter, sorrow, love, victory — that, when delivered directly by the characters’ German dialogue, align with the traditional sensibilities of Lutheranism itself: that worshippers could hear and understand the story in their own language, the result being a stronger affective impact.

characters — Peter, John, Mary Magdalene, and Mary of Cleophas (the mother of James), portrayed by soloists — deliver the story in the form of poetic dialogue.
After the prefatory Sinfonia, an open-ended Adagio leads into the first chorus, a rollicking movement that introduces the text: “Come, hasten and run, you fleet of foot, reach the cave that conceals Jesus!” Although the text is not scriptural in origin, the use of the word “hasten” does indicate a relationship to the original Gospel narrative (and therefore a nod to traditional oratorio convention) as the characters
shimmering brass, contrasts sharply with the tension of the Adagio movement and its aching woodwind solo gliding over pulsating strings. Then, the dancelike opening chorus’s buoyant and imitative lines lift us from sorrow, until the fourth movement brings the merriment to a halt with a recitative for all four soloists, followed by a soprano aria that conveys both sorrow and hope: “Soul, your spices will no longer be myrrh. For only adorning yourself with laurels offers you a worthy refreshment.” When Peter, John, and Mary Magdalene arrive at Jesus’s tomb and find it empty, the mood
begins to shift, the following movements imbued with increasing levity, until the final chorus brings the oratorio to a spirited, exuberant conclusion: “Shout joyously, you redeemed tongues, that they may be heard in heaven.”
With a fluidity one might expect from Bach, the music and text complement each other while the oratorio seamlessly navigates between the pits of sorrow and the heights of joy. Especially considering that the Easter Oratorio was originally something of a patchwork job, the musical features and text suggest that Bach’s priorities with this work favored rhetorical immediacy and emotional impact over strict adherence to convention.
While much of the cantata is rather typical of the style, with alternating recitatives and arias bookended by choral movements, Cantata No. 29 instead opens with an orchestral Sinfonia. Possibly due to the high-profile municipal context of the Ratswechsel, Bach made a deliberate choice to begin this cantata with non-texted music, drawing attention solely to his compositional talents. Most of Bach’s Ratswechsel cantatas have been lost, but another one of the few surviving examples, Cantata No. 120, also deviates from the usual cantata structure by opening with a movement for solo alto. Although Bach was not always one to buck tradition, the Easter Oratorio is not the only work on this evening’s program to deviate from formal expectations. On August 27, 1731, the citizens of Leipzig gathered in the St. Nicholas Church for the inauguration of the new town council. Although not a liturgical holiday, the changing of the council (or Ratswechsel) was a yearly event accompanied by a church service, complete with a sacred cantata. The 1731 Ratswechsel saw the premiere of Bach’s Cantata No. 29, Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir (We thank you, God, we thank you).

Closing this evening’s program is one of Bach’s best-known sacred works, the Magnificat. Originally composed for the Feast of the Visitation of Mary (July 2) in 1723, the Magnificat was a striking opening statement from Leipzig’s new music director. In 1733, he reworked the piece, changing the overall key from E-flat to D major and altering some of the instrumental parts, but the bones of the original remained intact. The D-major Magnificat eventually became the standard version for performance.
The Magnificat sets the song of the Virgin Mary from the Gospel of Luke. Specifically, the text comes from a dialogue between Mary and Elizabeth during the Visitation, in which Mary proclaims, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” Despite the Lutheran inclination for German texts in most cases, the liturgical significance of the Visitation warranted a Latin setting.
The overall structure of the Magnificat’s 12 movements can be broken down in several ways. One possibility is to view them as symmetrical, based on the alternation of musical keys for each verse before and after the central seventh movement; another view divides the 12 movements based on their orchestration, into groups of arias that lead to a punctuating chorus. However one chooses to hear the work, it is clear that Bach crafted his Magnificat carefully and with the same special attention to its architecture as the builders of Baroque churches.
Bach also gave attention to the ways the music of his Magnificat supported the text. The opening phrase (“My soul magnifies the Lord”) is set to a powerful choral-orchestral texture adorned with imitative passages and soaring trumpets. The following words (“And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior”), more personal in scale compared to the bolder preceding line, employ a gentler approach, with only solo voice and light strings underneath. In a compelling instance, the sensitivity of one passage (“For behold, from henceforth, I shall
be called blessed …”) gives way to explosive force as the sentence concludes (“… by all generations”). Throughout every movement, Bach’s musical setting complements the text in all its rhetorical and affective subtleties. In the final moments, we hear material from the opening movement repeated, supporting the work’s musical symmetry as well as its literal and theological magnitude — a fitting conclusion to a program devoted to the monumental legacy of Bach’s sacred music.

BERNARD LABADIE HAS ESTABLISHED himself worldwide as one of the preeminent conductors of the Baroque and Classical repertoire, a reputation closely tied to his work with Les Violons du Roy (for which he served as music director from its inception until 2014) and La Chapelle de Québec. With these two ensembles, he has regularly toured Canada, the US, and Europe and appeared at major venues and festivals such as Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Barbican, Concertgebouw, and Salzburg Festival, among others. He is also the principal conductor of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in New York.
Recent guest conducting highlights include The Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Handel and Haydn Society, National Arts Center Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Orchestre Philharmonique de MonteCarlo, Orchestre National de Lyon, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, and NDR Radiophilharmonie. Labadie’s extensive discography includes many critically acclaimed recordings on the Dorian, ATMA, and Virgin Classics labels, including Handel’s Apollo e Dafne and a collaborative recording of Mozart’s Requiem with Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec, both of which received Canada’s Juno Award. Other recordings include C.P.E. Bach’s complete cello concertos with Truls Mørk and Les Violons du Roy; J.S. Bach’s complete piano concertos with Alexandre Tharaud, both on Virgin Classics; and Haydn’s piano concertos with Marc-André Hamelin as soloist, released by Hyperion. He has received Paris’s Samuel de Champlain Award and the Canadian government’s Officer of the Order of Canada. In addition, his home province named him “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Québec.”
AMERICAN SOPRANO Joélle Harvey has built a reputation as one of the finest singers of her generation, performing major roles on stages such as the Metropolitan Opera, Glyndebourne, Royal Opera House, Zurich Opera, Teatro La Fenice, and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.
Harvey’s 2024 – 2025 season includes Haydn’s The Creation with Jane Glover and Music of the Baroque, a concert of Ravel and Poulenc with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, her house debut at the Opéra Royal de Versailles in Handel’s Acis and Galatea, and Anna Truelove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at Des Moines Metro Opera. In concert, Harvey performs Handel’s Messiah with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Houston Symphony Orchestra. She also returns to the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin for Mahler’s Second Symphony, performs J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, appears with the Handel and Haydn Society in a program of Handel, and sings Haydn with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Harvey’s recent highlights include appearances with a host of internationally acclaimed organizations, including The Cleveland Orchestra with Franz Welser-Möst, Los Angeles Philharmonic with Gustavo Dudamel, The English Concert with Harry Bicket, and
Arcangelo with Jonathan Cohen, in addition to performances with the San Francisco Symphony, New York Philharmonic, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, and Philharmonia Orchestra. On the opera stage, Harvey has performed on the greatest stages worldwide, including performing Pamina in The Magic Flute at the Metropolitan Opera and the title role in Handel’s Semele at Glyndebourne.
A native of Bolivar, New York, Harvey received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in vocal performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). She began her career training at Glimmerglass and the Merola Opera Program.
Mezzo-soprano
ADÈLE CHARVET HAS SWIFTLY RISEN to become one of the most exciting French mezzos of her generation. This season, Charvet makes her role debut as the title role in Ariodante for the Opéra national du Rhin, performs the title role in Carmen at the Opéra Royal de Versailles, and debuts at the Glyndebourne Festival as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro. Other season highlights include a celebratory concert with Le Concert de La Loge, Carmen and Djamileh excerpts with Les Musiciens du Louvre, Dido and Aeneas with Le Poème Harmonique, and an all-Bach concert with The Cleveland Orchestra.
Charvet made her operatic stage debut and as Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, followed by the Polovtsian maiden in Prince Igor for Dutch National Opera. There followed a series of house debuts at the Verbier Festival, Royal Opera, Opéra national de Bordeaux, and the Opéra Comique Javotte. Charvet’s artistry has captivated audiences across the world, with versatility spanning early to contemporary repertoire, encompassing vocal recitals, opera productions, and orchestral concerts with renowned ensembles and conductors including Marc Minkowski, Raphaël Pichon, and Julien Chauvin. Charvet recorded her debut album, Long Time Ago, with pianist Susan Manoff for Alpha Classics in 2019. She is now an exclusive recording artist, with her eclectic discography exploring a rich repertoire
spanning all forms and periods, from chamber music to opera. Her latest recording, Teatro Sant’Angelo, presents world premiere recordings of arias by Vivaldi, Chelleri, and Ristori, recorded with the French ensemble Le Consort. This album was awarded the Diamant d’Opéra Magazine Award and five stars from BBC Music Magazine.
Charvet studied at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Her accolades include the Yves Paternot Prize for the most outstanding musician of the Verbier Academy, the Melodie Prize at the Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Competition (alongside duo partner Florian Caroubi), and the Grand Prize and four special prizes at the IVC Competition in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
ANDREW HAJI IS ONE of the most sought-after lyric tenors, whose effortlessly transcendent voice is celebrated on concert and operatic stages worldwide.
In the 2024 – 25 season, the Canadian tenor makes his debuts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, and the NDR Radiophilharmonie. He returns to Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion, Les Violons du Roy and the Houston Symphony Orchestra in Handel’s Messiah, and Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society in Haydn’s The Seasons and Beethoven’s Mass in C major. Other notable performances include Mozart’s Requiem with the Kansas City Symphony, the title role in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito at Pacific Opera Victoria, and François Dompierre’s Requiem with the Festival Classica.
Recent orchestral highlights include performances with the Seattle Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Center Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, The English Concert, and at the Elora and Salzburg festivals.
Notable opera successes include Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Canadian Opera Company, Jonathan in Handel’s Saul at the Edinburgh International Festival,
Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the National Arts Centre, Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata with Vancouver Opera, and Alfredo in Johann Strauss, Jr.’s Die Fledermaus with Saskatoon Opera.
Haji is an alum of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio. He received awards from the Marilyn Horne Song Competition and Canadian Opera Company Ensemble, alongside the Grand Prix at the 50th International Vocal Competition in the Netherlands and the Oratorio Prize at the Montreal International Music Competition.
Haji received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. He was invited to participate in young artist programs at the Salzburg Festival Young Singers Project, the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy, the Music Academy of the West, and Accademia Europea dell’Opera.
A NATIVE OF CANADA , Gordon Bintner built his broad operatic repertoire first as a young artist at the Canadian Opera Company, and subsequently in the ensemble of Oper Frankfurt. Now a rising star on the operatic landscape, he has made a series of impressive debuts in recent seasons and is praised as much for his warmth of tone as for his compelling stage presence.
Bintner’s 2024 – 25 season includes a return to the Royal Opera in the title role of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Golaud in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande at the Opéra national de Paris, and two company debuts as Conte Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, at Lyric Opera of Chicago and Opera Australia. In concert, Bintner joins The Cleveland Orchestra for music of J.S. Bach and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
In recent seasons, Bintner has made notable debuts at San Francisco Opera, Opéra national de Lyon, and Teatro Regio di Torino. Further European highlights include Oronte in Charpentier’s Médée, with William Christie, and Albert in Massenet’s Werther, conducted by Antonio Pappano.
A regular guest at the Canadian Opera Company, Bintner has appeared before his home audience in L’elisir d’amore, The Magic Flute, and Don Giovanni, among others. Elsewhere in North America, he has performed as Lescaut in
Massenet’s Manon at Opéra de Montréal, Papageno in The Magic Flute at Michigan Opera Theatre, and in a Da Ponte trilogy with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra under Edo de Waart
Bintner recently joined the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal as Joseph in Berlioz’s L’enfance du Christ under Hervé Niquet. As an avid recitalist, he made his debut at London’s historic Wigmore Hall with acclaimed pianist Kirill Gerstein in a program of Busoni, Beethoven, and Weill, and at Montréal’s Salle Bourgie with accompanist Michael McMahon in works by Brahms, Finzi, Schubert, and Robert Schumann.
Bintner’s discography includes Junior in Bernstein’s A Quiet Place, recorded with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Kent Nagano (Decca Classics, 2018), and the Count in Schreker’s Der ferne Klang (OehmsClassics, 2021).

LISA WONG WAS APPOINTED director of choruses for The Cleveland Orchestra in May 2018, after serving as acting director throughout the 2017–18 season. She joined the choral staff of The Cleveland Orchestra as assistant director of choruses at the start of the 2010–11 season, helping to prepare The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and Blossom Festival Chorus for performances each year. In 2012, she took on added responsibilities as director of The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus.
In addition to her duties at Severance, Wong is a faculty member at The College of Wooster, where she conducts the awardwinning Wooster Chorus and teaches courses in conducting and music education. Choirs under her direction have performed at the Central Division conference of the American Choral Directors Association and the state conference of the Ohio Music Education Association. Wong has served as the Repertoire and Resource Chair for World Music and Cultures for the Ohio Choral Directors Association, as well as on the editorial board regarding culturally responsive pedagogy for the Ohio Music Education Association.
Active as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator, Wong serves regularly as a music panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and Chorus America. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from West Chester University, as well as Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.
Now in its 73rd season, The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus is celebrated for its versatility and refined musicianship, appearing regularly with The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance and Blossom Music Center. As one of the few all-volunteer, professionally trained choruses affiliated with a major American orchestra, it received the 2019 – 20 Distinguished Service Award, recognizing extraordinary service to the Orchestra.

NOW FIRMLY IN ITS SECOND CENTURY , The Cleveland Orchestra, under the leadership of Franz Welser-Möst since 2002, is one of the most sought-after performing ensembles in the world. Year after year, the ensemble exemplifies extraordinary artistic excellence, creative programming, and community engagement. In recent years, The New York Times has called Cleveland “the best in America” for its virtuosity, elegance of sound, variety of color, and chamber-like musical cohesion.
Founded by Adella Prentiss Hughes, the Orchestra performed its inaugural concert in December 1918. By the middle of the century, decades of growth and sustained support had turned the ensemble into one of the most admired around the world.
The past decade has seen an increasing number of young people attending concerts, bringing fresh attention to The Cleveland Orchestra’s legendary sound and committed programming. More recently, the Orchestra launched several bold digital projects, including the streaming platform Adella.live and its own recording label. Together, they have captured the Orchestra’s unique artistry and the musical achievements of the Welser-Möst and Cleveland Orchestra partnership.
The 2024 – 25 season marks Franz Welser-Möst’s 23rd year as Music Director, a period in which The Cleveland
Orchestra has earned unprecedented acclaim around the world, including a series of residencies at the Musikverein in Vienna, the first of its kind by an American orchestra, and a number of celebrated opera presentations.
Since 1918, seven music directors — Nikolai Sokoloff, Artur Rodziński, Erich Leinsdorf, George Szell, Lorin Maazel, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Franz Welser-Möst — have guided and shaped the ensemble’s growth and sound. Through concerts at home and on tour, broadcasts, and a catalog of acclaimed recordings, The Cleveland Orchestra is heard today by a growing group of fans around the world.

The Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow reflects on three years with The Cleveland Orchestra and the premiere of her brand-new piece in May.
ALLISON LOGGINS-HULL WASN’T THERE for the afternoon that would change her life. It was October 3, 2021 — unseasonably humid, remembers Cleveland Orchestra Principal Flutist Joshua Smith. He and other Orchestra members were putting on a “Porchestra” concert on the stoop of the Cozad-Bates House, a pre–Civil War home believed to have acted as a safe house along the Underground Railroad.
He’d decided to play Homeland, a solo piece Loggins-Hull wrote in 2018. Smith had been besotted with the work since a friend introduced him to it some months before. “She knows how to exploit an in-betweenness with [instruments], like the delicate bends that you can get between notes,” Smith says of Loggins-Hull’s writing.

that he requested more scores from Loggins-Hull. A few months after sending some samples, Loggins-Hull learned she had been selected as the Orchestra’s next Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow. She’d had no idea she was even being considered. “They asked me if I wanted to do it, and I was like, ‘Come again?’” she says, laughing in disbelief at the memory. “I didn’t believe it; I didn’t see it coming.”
Loggins-Hull has written across solo, chamber, and orchestral configurations. Much of her work strikingly incorporates electronics — samples, delay, looping. Others, like Homeland and Can You See? — her 2023 commission for the Orchestra — mimic electronic effects but are purely acoustic.
Loggins-Hull viewed her time in Cleveland as an invitation to play in a purely orchestral sandbox. And what better sandbox exists than The Cleveland Orchestra? “I’ve never heard an orchestra sound that great. That’s the truth,” she says. “I’ve sat in on rehearsals; I’ve listened to so many concerts and
recordings. The opportunity to work with this orchestra has informed my concept of orchestration and color in a priceless way.”
Arguably, Loggins-Hull’s tenure has been just as transformative for the Orchestra as it has for her. Previous Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellows held the fellowship for two years. LogginsHull asked that hers be extended to three so she could forge deeper connections with the city.
Those connections later inspired Legacy, a string sextet commissioned by the Orchestra last season. The piece references concerts held onsite with
three community partners: the Fatima Family Center in Hough; Karamu House, the city’s historical Black theater; and the Hryhory Kytasty Cleveland School of Bandura, a Ukrainian music school. Performers from all three organizations convened at Severance Music Center last May to play at a concert featuring Legacy’s premiere.
Welser-Möst, reflecting on Loggins-Hull’s tenure, praised her as “an extraordinary person and a wonderful
composer.” He continued, “The way she has reached out to the Cleveland community during her fellowship — she’s become a star. People have fallen in love with her in such a great way.”
Still ahead is Loggins-Hull’s third and final commission for the Orchestra, premiering May 8–10. Titled Grit. Grace. Glory., she says the 20-minute piece is her most ambitious work to date and is
the slower, more meditative Shoreline Shadows. That movement incorporates improvisations by Cleveland School of the Arts students in response to Loggins-Hull’s prompt: “What does Cleveland mean to you?”

“informed by everything,” from the people she met in Cleveland to her own personal reflections following her father’s death last April.
“I really wanted it to be a piece for The Cleveland Orchestra — this specific orchestra and this specific place, [with] its own energy and rhythm,” LogginsHull says. “I was able to include other people’s voices, stories, and histories but still do it in my voice, without overshadowing their narratives.”
The driving first movement, Steel, nods to literal and metaphorical railways through Cleveland. In a full-circle moment, she was thinking about the Cozad-Bates House as she wrote it, pivotal not just to survivors of slavery but to Loggins-Hull’s own path to The Cleveland Orchestra. It’s followed by
intricately placed offbeats. “It’s a musical ‘humblebrag,’” she explains. “The material itself is not complicated, but it’s written in such a way that the Orchestra can show off.”
The finale movement, Ode, opens with chorales referencing material from earlier in the piece. But it ends in a very different place altogether, on a hard-rocking tutti in the spirit of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir.” “I mean, how can I ignore rock n’ roll? That would be a huge oversight,” Loggins-Hull says with a giggle. “I even told them in the score: ‘Rock out.’”

AMONG ITS RANKS , The Cleveland Orchestra boasts six members who are alums of The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO).
Two of these players — second violinist Jeffrey Zehngut and his brother, violist Gareth Zehngut — recently sat down with two current musicians in COYO: violinist Cyprus Foster and oboist Eliana Fittante. Their conversation ran the gamut, from what brought them to COYO to their advice for young musicians to what they like to do outside of music.
ELIANA FITTANTE
How did you end up in COYO? Was it a teacher recommendation or did you do independent research?
JEFFREY ZEHNGUT
I went to Interlochen Arts Camp and met a violist from Cleveland who was in COYO. I was deciding between youth orchestras that year in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Cleveland, which are all about four hours from our hometown in Pennsylvania. Since I already had a friend in COYO and the group’s schedule was ideal, I ended up choosing that one. We’d leave around 8:30 in the morning, my parents would do some work in the library during rehearsal, and then we’d drive back and be home by 10.

For me, I had a brother’s recommendation to join COYO!
ELIANA
Did you overlap with one another?
GARETH
Yes, Jeff started the year before me. (We’re three years apart.) And then our younger sister, who’s a violinist, joined after us.
CYPRUS FOSTER
What was the most influential part of being in COYO for you?
GARETH
Being on a stage with a bunch of kids like me who were taking music seriously and at a level you don’t find in most other youth orchestras. Also, getting the chance to receive coaching from Cleveland Orchestra players — my coach was Stan Konopka, who still plays in the Orchestra and coaches for COYO. Being in COYO is honestly where I learned how to play in an orchestra and what the role of a violist is.

ELIANA
Do either of you have a favorite piece that you love to perform?
JEFFREY
There are a lot of amazing pieces, but I always go back to Mahler; I think that’s some of the repertoire we do best here. Sibelius’s Second Symphony was one that confirmed my decision to go into music and join COYO. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony was another one of those too.
GARETH
Along the same lines, if going into music means just one thing, that can be dangerous. You can push yourself and might be fortunate enough to get to do what we’re doing. I can confidently say we both feel incredibly lucky to be where we are. But at the same time, not everybody gets to the NFL. You might not end up with the career that you dreamed of, but that doesn’t mean you won’t end up with the career that you love.

If there were one thing that you could tell yourself at our age, or someone who is considering going into music, what would that be?
JEFFREY
Music is a wonderful thing. If you need music, if it speaks to you, then give it everything. If you’re interested in other things and can see yourself doing something else, that’s OK too! But do something you love.
JEFFREY
Exactly. Success in music can mean a lot of different things.
CYPRUS
That makes sense. What do you do to maintain your level of playing and further it?
GARETH
I spend a lot of time working on exercises that my former teachers gave me, and they’re still incredibly helpful. As far as improvement, being around people who inspire you and getting to play with them is a great way to continue to hear things in ways that you hadn’t thought about before.
JEFFREY
It’s also inspiring to talk to younger musicians, like yourselves, who are playing with this same level of commitment. It helps us to remember where we once were and how we felt back then.
ELIANA
What do you like to do other than music?
GARETH
We like to travel a lot — anywhere and whenever we can — and to play soccer. My wife and I also got into vegetable gardening some years ago, which has been nice. When you see streaks of dirt on my tux, that’s the excuse!
CYPRUS
Speaking of, do you exclusively listen to classical music?
GARETH
I love a variety of music. Plus, hearing other high-level performers and their different approaches to music can still translate to our work in a way.
JEFFREY
And every genre has its own traditions and history that’s passed down. I saw the Bob Dylan movie not too long ago and the music that he created is just amazing.
ELIANA
What about Wicked? Have you seen that?
JEFFREY
Not yet, but I’m sure you’ve heard that Cynthia Erivo is coming to Blossom this summer [July 27], which will be incredible.
CYPRUS
Yes! You should see it before then.
JEFFREY
We are both musical fans, so we definitely will!

AT THE 67TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS on February 2, audio producer Elaine Martone was awarded the title Producer of the Year, Classical. This win marks her third victory in the category and her sixth Grammy overall.
Martone’s relationship with The Cleveland Orchestra has been central to her career. Over the years, she has worked with the Orchestra on numerous recordings, developing a strong professional and personal connection. Her latest Grammy win was driven by her work on four recent projects from The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Möst — Bartók: String Quartet No. 3 & Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin, Bruckner: Symphony No. 4, Prokofiev: Symphony No. 6, and Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4. These recordings showcased both Martone’s exceptional production skills and the Orchestra’s world-class musicianship.

stand up for myself,” Martone said in her heartfelt acceptance speech. She also thanked her recording engineer and partner-in-production Gintas Norvila, who works on many Cleveland Orchestra projects, and her husband and fellow classical producer Robert Woods, who has 13 Grammy wins of his own.
Martone’s deep respect for the musicians and the institution has been a hallmark of her extensive body of work.

Clara Taplin Rankin passed away on February 26 at age 107. Her commitment to the institution spanned more than eight decades.
Clara’s connection with the Orchestra began as a teenager, attending concerts with her mother, and grew into a deep and enduring bond. Her formal involvement with the Orchestra began in the late 1950s, when she began volunteering.
She was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1997 and became an Honorary Trustee for Life in 2021, contributing to major projects such as the Severance Renovation and the 75th Anniversary Challenge Fund. As a member of the
Orchestra’s Education Committee, she was a passionate advocate for the value of music as a lifelong pursuit for people of all ages.
Clara’s legacy is also intertwined with her family’s relationship with the Orchestra. Her late husband, Alfred M. Rankin, served as president and chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1968 to 1983. Together, the Rankins made a lasting impact on the Orchestra, including their

endowment gifts to establish the Edith S. Taplin Principal Oboe Chair in 1975 and the Alfred M. and Clara T. Rankin Principal Second Violin Chair in 1980. Today, her son, Alfred Rankin, Jr., and granddaughter, Helen Rankin Butler, remain active and important members of the Board of Trustees.
For her steadfast support, Clara was honored with The Cleveland Orchestra’s Distinguished Service Award in 2011. She once expressed that the Orchestra was profoundly important to her because of her admiration for its high standards of excellence and beauty of sound.
Clara’s impact on The Cleveland Orchestra is immeasurable, and her presence will be deeply missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Rankin family, and we join them in celebrating an extraordinary life.
EVERY SPRING , The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO), comprising young musicians from across Northeast Ohio and beyond, holds auditions for new members. However, there are rarely enough candidates who audition on bassoon, since the starting age for bassoonists is often much later due to its difficulty and size. Access to adequate instruments can also create an additional barrier for both students and schools.
Thankfully, Cleveland music lover Joan Y. Horvitz stepped in and made the decision to leave The Cleveland Orchestra in her will, with the wish that it would create new opportunities for young musicians from diverse backgrounds. “Joan was passionate about the Orchestra and wanted to cultivate this musical art form so that it would continue to be vibrant for future generations,” said Richard Horvitz and Erica Hartman-Horvitz, Joan’s stepson and stepdaughter-in-law.
Because of Horvitz’s estate gift, The Cleveland Orchestra was able to launch its Bassoon Farm (below) in fall 2022,
creating a path for underrepresented students to audition for COYO. Students from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District between grades 5 and 8 have the opportunity to develop skills on the instrument with instruction from Mark DeMio, a bassoon professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music. This year, there are nine students in the program who receive one private lesson and one group lesson per week.
Participants have also received visits from many young musicians, like COYO alum and Shaker Heights High School graduate Joshua Elmore, who was recently appointed principal bassoon of the San Francisco Symphony.
It is thanks to one loving donor, who thought about what she would like the future of classical music in Cleveland to look like, that we are able to offer this important learning program for young musicians in our community.
